I ordered this coat for my daughter, who goes to college in freezing Madison, WI. We ordered and returned this coat (and 2 other down coats from L.L.Bean and Lands End). Although this coat seemed like a quality garment, with great technical features (waterproof, 650-fill down), it just looked kind of funny on her--rather shapeless and stiff. She ended up getting a slighly shorter down jacket from Eddie Bauer that went on sale after Christmas and was about a third of the price. It's not waterproof and probably not as warm as the Marmot (although it's also 650-fill), but it's more stylish and flattering.

I bought this sweater for my 13-year-old son, who hates the static of fleece and who was having trouble fitting his bulky cotton sweatshirts under his parka. This is actually the second color I got for him. He loved the first one so much (in a kind of orangy brick color) that I waited until I found the sweater on sale in black. It's very attractive and soft, and it washes well in the machine (though I dry it flat).

My 13-year-old son hates (what he considers) bulky winter gloves, so he usually wears those cheap thin acrylic gloves that you get at the drugstore. He wanted something that would be warmer but would still be flexible (for zipping, getting things out of his backpack, and so on). These gloves fit the bill perfectly. I lot of other options I looked at were really expensive because they were highly technical windstopping gloves (I guess), but that's not what my son needed. And since he'll lose them by the end of the winter, I wasn't going to spend a lot of money.
