DAKINE Drafter Pack - 700cu in

DAKINE Drafter Pack - 700cu in

Rating for this product: 5 January 12, 2012

Great small to midsize hydration back with room for the essentials just like the description says. This pack (like most/all Dakine packs) uses a Hydrapak reservoir with a quick disconnect at the bottom so you do not have to unthread the drinking tube to fill up the reservoir. When filled up to its 100oz capacity, there was still enough room for a shell jacket (Alpha LT in XL), a multitool, cell phone, keys, and some snacks. I haven't tried out the helmet carry, but it looks like it will work as advertised. The shoulder straps are comfortable and the waist belt keeps it from bouncing around too much when it gets rough.

Great Jacket

Stoic Breaker Fleece Hooded Jacket - Men's

Stoic Breaker Fleece Hooded Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 12, 2012

Got mine in Black/Deep and it is typical Stoic quality and fit. I'm 6'3", 200-205lbs and the XL fits great. I usually wear a 36-37" sleeve in dress shirts and the sleeve length is on par with that. The cut is slim and athletic, although it could use 1-2" more in length or at least a drop tail to be perfect. The Wind Pro fabric is a pretty lightweight fleece that breathes well and definitely blocks wind more than a plain fleece layer. Polartec says that it is 4x more wind resistant than normal fleece and I would say that their claim is accurate and its wind resistance falls somewhere between a normal fleece and a highly breathable softshell.

4 stars only because it could be a little longer.

Worth the extra $$$

Stoic Tour Pant Se - Men's

Stoic Tour Pant Se - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 June 23, 2011

Definitely worth the extra money over the regular Tour pants (assuming both are the SAC sale price). The Schoeller fabric breathes infinitely better than the softshell fabric on the regular Tour pants and is much less bulky as well. The fleece backing is much thinner, making these pants much more versatile and able to be used well into the spring.

Fit: Same kind of awkward sizing as the regular Tour pants. I'm a size 32 in every other brand out there, yet I don't fit into the medium in these pants (or the regular Tour), so I am stuck with an ever so slightly too big pant that I am forced to wear a belt with because the waist doesn't match the seat/crotch/thigh areas.

That being said, I am more than happy with these pants and am willing to put up with the odd sizing for the price that I got these pants for.

Exped SynMat Sleeping Pad

Exped SynMat Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 February 14, 2011

This is the latest and probably last pad in a long search to find the right balance between weight and comfort. I've tried thermarest's 3/4 length prolite and z-lite in my more ultralight days, switched to a big agnes air-core and slept great and then got the Exped Synmat and slept even better. For me the extra few ounces over a full-length thermarest are a welcome trade off for a full nights sleep where I'm not waking up because my arms have fallen asleep.

As for the pump, its great and should keep the pad in a lot better shape because you are not introducing moisture everytime you inflate the pad. However, like other people have said, its probably a good idea to take a practice run at home first.

Smith Stance Goggle

I would not get these goggles. I would suggest one of Smith's OTG goggles and wear your glasses or get the Smith Prophecy Goggle and get the ODS-RX adapter.

Not for fans of the OHM I

Electric OHM III Sunglasses

Electric OHM III Sunglasses

Rating for this product: 2 December 2, 2010

Picked these up in Gloss Black/Grey Polarized because I have the original metal frame OHM and they are one of my favorite pairs of sunglasses. Style wise these sunglasses took the large lenses of the OHM, but don't wrap and hug your face as much, so they just look kind of strange. Quality is great as always with Electric, but these just weren't for me.

Mammut Rocks

Mammut Outline Fleece Jacket - Men's

Mammut Outline Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 22, 2010

First Mammut purchase I've made as well, and it won't be the last. The fit is excellent and slimmer than most companies out there. I am 6'3" and a very athletic 205 and the XL is just about perfect. To be 100% perfect, the shoulders could be a little wider, but the stretch of the fabric and the raglan sleeves make this a non-issue. A little more length wouldn't hurt either, but its no where close to too short either. The smooth face of the fabric will bead light moisture and it does cut the wind a little bit as well. The hood makes you look like an olympic speed-skater, haha.

No more thermarest for me!

Big Agnes Air Core Sleeping Pad - Mummy

Big Agnes Air Core Sleeping Pad - Mummy

Rating for this product: 5 June 19, 2010

One of the best purchases I've made. It is great to be able to sleep the whole night without waking up because your arms are numb or your hip is sore. If you are a side sleeper, get this pad. The r-value isn't as high as a thermarest, but I haven't noticed any appreciable difference in warmth.

Sea To Summit Lite Line Clothesline

Sea To Summit Lite Line Clothesline

Rating for this product: 5 May 16, 2010

Its a clothes line that is very small, adjustable, and is permanently attached to its pouch so you can't lose it. Indispensable when living out of hotels/hostels for a month. Small enough that I will probably even bring it on summer backpacking trips now.

A must for any winter backpacking trip. They're warm and have a pretty durable sole on them. A little more expensive than other options, but they should hold up better.

Great pack...If you have a shorter torso

Lowe Alpine Rush 25 Pack - 1500cu in

Lowe Alpine Rush 25 Pack - 1500cu in

Rating for this product: 4 May 15, 2010

Looks like it would be a great pack if you have a shorter torso. It is very well made and is a great size for a day pack. The hip-belt pockets and the mesh pockets on the shoulder straps are great, more packs need to start incorporating this into their designs. However, the entire pack is only 17" from top to bottom, and about 14" from the top to the middle of the waistbelt. I normally wear a medium to large backpack and this puts the hip-belt far above my hips and even above my belly-button, so its going back.

Weird Sizing

Stoic Overhang Pant - Men's

Stoic Overhang Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 April 14, 2010

Ordered a Medium (32.4-35.6") and could barely get the things on, very tight in the waist, seat and upper thigh. I am usually between a 32 and 34 in most brands and my waist/hips measure in at exactly 34". Backcountry/SAC was helpful as always and sent me a Large. The waist was way too big, the seat too baggy, and the crotch too low.

Bottom Line: If you can find a size that fits you, these pants should be awesome, but I had to return both pairs because they were cut so strangely.

Perfect all around

Arc'teryx Alpha LT Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Alpha LT Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 26, 2009

The Alpha LT has quickly become my go-to jacket, getting grabbed before my Pac-lite shell, because it is THAT nice. The face fabric is unbelievably bomber, especially when you consider its weight(or lack thereof). The hood fits great with and without a helmet, which is something that not many companies can pull off. The cut is typical Arc'teryx, nice and slim without being restrictive or tight. At 6'3" and 200lbs, the XL fits me pretty much perfectly. The drop tail keeps the drafts out, even when bending over.

I would also completely agree with the reviewer below that compares this jacket with a luxury European car. Will another cheaper jacket do the job? Yes, absolutely. But if you have the means, this jacket will get it done with more comfort and style, not to mention last for quite a long time.

Great Vest

Marmot Zeus Down Vest - Men's

Marmot Zeus Down Vest - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 26, 2009

Got this vest as a more versatile insulation layer. Fit is excellent, marshmallow syndrome is kept to a minimum and the shell doesn't have the trashbag look/feel that many down pieces have. The 800 fill is extremely warm, lightweight, and compressible. Additionally, it shows no signs of leaking through the fabric or seams.

Bonus: The vest self stores in the left hand pocket.

Backcountry.com Merino Crew Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Backcountry.com Merino Crew Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 18, 2009

Backcountry.com needs to restock these shirts, it is my new favorite t-shirt. The cut is perfect, snug without looking like spandex and has a nice drop in the back. Yeah, the armpits are a little higher than normal, but they are not uncomfortable at all. 6'3", 200lbs and the XL is great. The XXL would probably fit as well.

Nice shirt, pay attention to sizing

Icebreaker BodyFit 150 Atlas Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Icebreaker BodyFit 150 Atlas Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 16, 2009

Quality is second to none as you would expect from Icebreaker. Great all-season weight and softness as well. However, make sure you really pay attention to the sizing chart. I am 6'3", a very athletic 200lbs and generally wear an XL in just about everything, except this... the XL is too tight in the chest a little on the short side as well, and yes I know this is a base layer and should be snug.

My advice is to pay close attention to the sizing chart (duh) and order based primarily on chest size and then height.

Update, the XXL is a perfect fit.

Snug Armpits - Size up

Stoic Merino 150 Crew - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Stoic Merino 150 Crew - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 6, 2009

Great shirt, nice soft wool, appears to be constructed very well and the cut is nice. The sizing chart seems accurate enough, but if your chest is on the upper end of a size, I would recommend going up to the next size. I'm 6'3"and a very athletic 200lbs and I should have sized up to an XL. The large is a little snug under the armpits, not even really annoying, but just not perfect.

Perfect Casual Jacket

Backcountry.com Siphon Wool Hooded Jacket - Men's

Backcountry.com Siphon Wool Hooded Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 23, 2008

I purchased this jacket before it became known as the Siphon and it has quickly become one of my favorite jackets. The cut is extremely athletic (which is something not a lot of companies seem to get). I am 6'3" 195lbs and the Large is perfect. The sleeves are long (another bonus) and have a nice stretchy cuff on the inside of them to keep the cold out. It is very wind resistant, the outer shell is wool so yeah it might shed a little water or snow, but its definitely not the jacket to be wearing when there is a lot of it coming down.

Better than the competition

Nathan HPL #020 Race Vest

Nathan HPL #020 Race Vest

Rating for this product: 5 November 7, 2008

Purchased this for trail runs and races after realizing that I didn't need to have 100oz of water contained in a very heavy and hot camelbak. Go to any Ultra and you will see mostly Nathan packs for a good reason. Rides higher and doesn't bounce at all when snugged up. Doesn't restrict movement or breathing and has plenty of easy accessible storage on the front for gels and salt capsules. The shoulder straps are a very thin material with a comfortable/soft brushed texture towards your skin. They seem fragile to me, but I haven't experienced any problems with them after a lot of miles.

Salomon Trail Comp Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 June 24, 2008

These are some pretty nice trail shorts. Very comfortable, quick drying, but a little noisy at times. The zippered pocket is also nice. The fit is much better than most running shorts since they don't balloon out just below the elastic waistband.

Amazing, Size Up

MontBell Ultralight Down Jacket - Men's

MontBell Ultralight Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 19, 2008

Great jacket, the Paprika(Red) minimizes the trashbag look. It is unbelievably lightweight, packs down to nothing and I still have a hard time believing it keeps you as warm as it does.

However: I am a size Large in TNF, and had to exchange for a XL in this jacket because it was too small around the chest/back/armpits if you did anything but stand up straight.

The North Face TKA 200 Altitude Full Zip Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 18, 2008

Very nice jacket. Size Large in Anchorage Green fits me great (6'3" 185 with a long torso). Very athletic cut which is nice. The little snaps on the cuff are kind of annoying, but not a huge issue and could be easily cut off if necessary. I assume that they are for when you zip it into a shell.
