ProBar Whole Berry Blend - Box of 12

Rating for this product: 5 October 1, 2007

That pretty much sums it up; organic, non-baked, tasty, etc. The one thing missing is "inexpensive" about three buck a pop. If money's no object (not that it isn't with me!!), knock yourself out. Every kind I've tasted, I've liked; these are just as good as any. Buy a box or two and enjoy!

Chaco Z/1 Sandal - Boys'

Chaco Z/1 Sandal - Boys'

Rating for this product: 5 August 10, 2007

Same quality materials, build, comfort; these big-boy Chacos are the real deal - and more! After all, the "men" don't get handy pull straps and glow in the dark logos! My boys love these out and about, from the pool to the river, the yard to the trail. Sure, flip flops and Crocs slip on easier, but these are Chacos - you know, the Cadillac of sandals! One thing: These are really big, so get one size smaller for your kiddie.

Vasque Sundowner GTX Backpacking Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 4, 2007

I used the Sundowner for years in Eastern Europe, slogging through everything from deep mud to wet, rutted city streets. The comfort is remarkable and the Gore-Tex performs as expected. It even looks decent, in a pinch! Classic bulletproof boot.

Icebreaker Merino = Golden Fleece

Icebreaker Superfine190 Tech T - Men's

Icebreaker Superfine190 Tech T - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 3, 2007

Forget the old idea that "fleece" is synthetic! When it comes to basic tech tees, this one is definitely worth its weight in gold. It's comfortable, it breathes, it cools, it warms, stays fresh (i.e. doesn't reek like synthetics), it's biodegradable, it's REMARKABLE. The only catch is that you can't dry it in the dryer (if you want it to retain its size and natural performance properties). Great stuff!!

The (almost) perfect little "dry box"

GSI Outdoor Utility Dry Box

GSI Outdoor Utility Dry Box

Rating for this product: 4 March 29, 2007

Sturdy and sealed to keep water out; simple design performs as expected. The buckles can be a little finicky, but I think it's necessary to keep them tight when the going gets rough. The only recommendation I have is to include a high-density foam to cushion & secure your precious cargo on the inside.

I gave this to my wife for her birthday. She really likes the feminine fit and elegant stitching on the front and back (unfortunately, you can't really see it on the website). It looks great on her, and she adores the baby-soft comfort and cozy warmth of this hoody. Two thumbs up!

Petzl Tikka Plus Headlamp

Petzl Tikka Plus Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 January 10, 2007

... that hasn't already been said? This tidy package is super handy, lightweight, and high quality. The single strap is comfortable and more versatile than the (also beloved) Zipka Plus. User-friendly button, three brightness settings (plus strobe), and tilt feature. At home or in the backcountry, on the trail or up a crag, in the car (or on the side of the road!), this is a great basic-use lamp.

Columbia Free Agent Parka - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 10, 2007

This is an AMAZING package for the price: waterproof (guaranteed), breathable (guaranteed), critical seam taping, powder skirt, removable hood... To find a comparable product in the next brand up, you'd probably pay twice as much. Save your $$$ and go for the Free Agent. (Unfortunately, I had to return the jacket. It was either too short or too wide for my tall-and-skinny frame).

Darn Tough In-Country Boot Sock Full Cushion DO NOT USE

Darn Tough In-Country Boot Sock Full Cushion DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 4 December 1, 2006

Not only are these socks tough but also that they are warm and comfy thanks to the REAL golden fleece: Merino wool. The close fit isn't quite as perfect as Teko socks, but I like the function, feel and durability better than Smartwool's. Ironically, they are soft at friendly while, at the same time, practically indestructible.

The flavor is natural and earthy, void of preservatives or artificial sweeteners. Mmmm... Pro Bar!

SmartWool Microweight Boxer Brief - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 2, 2006

You betcha, when they're made of SmartWool! Nothing compares to the performance and comfort of merino next to your skin - yes, even on hot (~100-degree) summer days. (Okay, so the "trap door" is a departure from the norm, but it works fine!) If you're a merino junkie like me, you won't settle for less (Pata-who?) than these!

Ultimate Direction Fastdraw Gel Bottle Pouch

Ultimate Direction Fastdraw Gel Bottle Pouch

Rating for this product: 4 October 2, 2006

I'm impressed with how well made these feel: The squishy criss-cut bite valve on the water bottle is fantastic; easy to open and close, no leakage without at least two out of the bite-suck-squeeze trio. The gel flask gets by with an old-school hard tip; just make sure it's really shut before you slip it back in its holster! Highly recommended for aquaholics and goo junkies everywhere on shorter (up to 5-mile) runs!

O.K., if you're into that sort of (polyester) thing...

Salomon Moto Tech-T - Men's

Salomon Moto Tech-T - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 June 29, 2006

The virtues of this shirt are its super light weight, breatheability, and relative wicking ability. In other words, I was glad to have it (over a cotton tee!) on hot trail runs in the high Rockies. If you have been spoiled by merino wool (like Ibex), though, this polypro stuff is going to feel rough, stiff, and woefully inadequate in terms of managing temperature. MY bottom line? Adequate for polypro; but if you can afford it, upgrade to merino - you won't regret it!

Salomon Trail Comp Short - Men's

Salomon Trail Comp Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 June 29, 2006

The Trail Comps' "transparency" - the fact that you hardly notice them on the run - is their beauty. The inner liner seems to work well, and the back zip and regular side pockets are handy. The inseam is a little longer than skimpy running shorts. They're comfortable and perform very well out on the trail, especially when the going gets hot. I like 'em!

Mighty Spork!

Brunton My-Ti Spork

Brunton My-Ti Spork

Rating for this product: 5 January 12, 2006

This thing is THE ultra minimalist flatware! Weighing in at just over half an ounce and versatile from soup to salad, from hardcore backpack to laptop bag (man-purse?), it's just great to have around. It goes without saying that the titanium makes it both strong and lightweight, but the finishing touches of the polished ladle and rough (read "grippy") finished handle make it even better. A must have!

The Best of the Best

Arc'teryx Emissary Raglan - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Arc'teryx Emissary Raglan - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 27, 2005

This is a great combination: 1) Arc'teryx seems to be THE gear manufacturer to beat; 2) Synthetics simply can't stand up to Mother Nature's highly evolved Merino wonder. The result of this happy marriage is an incredible technical base layer that performs like nothing else. Superior wicking, temperature management (you have to try it to believe it), comfort, and naturally antimicrobial properties (it doesn't stink like synthetics) all come together to create, in my humble opinion, the perfect garment. This shirt feels light and seems best suited to insulation duty, as minimal stitching and a raglan cut lend to comfort beneath layers and/or a pack rather than rugged use as outerwear. Arc'teryx and Merino seem to be identical in this regard: Once you try them, there's no going back!

Marmot DriClime Windshirt - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 22, 2005

What more can I say that hasn't already been said? If may sound corny, but this jacket is special. For me, it is the perfect partner to an equally amazing Ibex Merino wool base layer for running hot in cold weather (20s-30s F). The inner "DriClime" lining is soft, amazingly light, and surprisingly warm. Minor quibbles include too-tight elastic wrists and too-short-for-my-long-arms sleeves. Then again, I am 6'5", and I can't help but give the Windshirt five shining stars!

KEEN Targhee Light Hiker - Men's

KEEN Targhee Light Hiker - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 19, 2005

Right out of the box, the Targhees are unbelievably comfortable. The generous toe box, bolstered by the trademark (and ever so practical) toe bumper, tapers through a supportive arch to a well cushioned heel. I have found them to be unusually tenacious in wet or slippery conditions. Did I mention that they are about the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn, taking the likes of Montrail, The North Face, Chaco, Lowa, and La Sportiva into consideration? They offer a great combination of comfort and support; you've really just got to try 'em yourself. Grippy, waterproof, functional, and super comfortable, there's a LOT to love about the Targhee. I'd wear mine every day if I could - oh wait, I can!

Italian Stallions

Julbo Typhoon Polarized Sunglasses

Julbo Typhoon Polarized Sunglasses

Rating for this product: 5 December 1, 2005

'For water addicts only' - "Italian Seahorses" just doesn't have the same ring, does it? While I've enjoyed using these out on the water (in which case the custom removable cord comes in handy), I have also put them to the test running on and off road. They aren’t the ultimate for aerobic (i.e. hot) activities; the close fit isn't meant to breathe heavily, but they are effective and versatile. Well placed nose and arm pads grip adequately without being too sticky. If you like the wraparound look, the Typhoon's smooooth style complements a high-quality “Made in Italy” pedigree. Seriously, these exude a solid, expensive character like few other sunglasses; most feel cheap and plasticky by comparison. I have both Silver and the matte Black (which I love with the brown lenses), and they both look and feel great. I love these glasses! NOTE: Although the Face Size recommendation says Medium to Large, these seem to fit medium and/or narrow faces best; the arms may pinch larger noggins.

Nixon Famous Watch

Nixon Famous Watch

Rating for this product: 5 November 29, 2005

I appreciate a good timepiece, and this watch is by far the best I have ever owned. It expertly combines form and function, offering a variety of features not generally found on similar watches, topped off with a sturdy yet professional look that is unmatched. I like the large face and the stainless steel casing and band. The quality feel and comfort of the watch is excellent. Adjustment controls are a little different than other watches, so it's good to read the instructions the first time. Once you know what to do, it's just as easy. When I pull one of my old Fossils or other watches out they seem flimsy, cheap, and uncomfortable by comparison. I've had mine for almost a year and still appreciate its look and feel each and every time I put it on—no kidding!

Light, fast, and grippy

Vasque Catalyst Approach Shoe - Men's

Vasque Catalyst Approach Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 10, 2005

While those three adjectives almost sum up the Catalyst experience, other words inevitably come to mind: comfortable, high quality, well balanced, and roomy, just to name a few. As an “approach shoe,” these are more of a trail runner with a sticky Stealth rubber sole than a day hiker, meaning they favor flexibility and grip over ankle support and ruggedness. The forefoot offers adequate cushioning without sacrificing feel, and a broad, stable center keep you balanced. The spacious toe box seems almost too generous, although the solid lacing system keeps your foot snugly in place. If you run small in your size (as I do in a 12), you may want to consider buying a half-size smaller. All in all, superb for scrambling and hiking in warmer temps.

Smith Slider Series Empire Sunglasses - Polarized

Smith Slider Series Empire Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 5 November 10, 2005

The Empire is a sweet piece of work from the shade Smiths in Ketchum. In my experience (which includes the likes of Oakley, Ray Ban, Maui Jim, SPY, Electric, and Native) Smith arguably makes the best polarized lens out there - especially handsome in the Sienna Brown. In the Empire, they provide superior clarity and awesome coverage with a great field of vision (note that the Emps are somewhat "taller" than most wraparound designs, enhancing the up-and-down view but changing the appearance to a degree). Security and comfort are enhanced by the grippy nose and arms, and the interchangeable lenses are nicely balanced, solid yet easy to remove. Fit and finish are top notch, further polishing Smith's sterling reputation for quality. I LOVE these shades!

Excel at what?

Ultimate Direction Excel HHS

Ultimate Direction Excel HHS

Rating for this product: 3 November 9, 2005

Initial positive impressions of the trick valve and snug, well-built horizontal holster faded quickly as I tried to put this to use in the real world. First, the valve: Hailed as superior to previous designs, it turns out to be utterly impractical under exertion as you have to deliberately suck the water out. Air is slow to recirculate into the slow-breathing design, and you end up losing your breath and your rhythm on the fly. The old point-and-shoot bottle, however simplistic, is cheaper and more practical. Secondly, unless you are desperate for a place to put your keys or goo (or have an aversion to running with anything in your hands), the holster is just overkill, especially for such a relatively small amount (20 oz.) of water. Last, but not least, insufficient cap threading allows for the top to pop right off if you tug it hard enough when drawing it from its holster and to leak if the bottle is squeezed. Ideal application would be for easy to moderate exercise: The holster keeps the water readily at hand when you need it, the valve prevents leakage and pops back into place with a quick flick, and the quality is sufficient for light duty.

Five words sum it up nicely: This is a beautiful watch. Stylish and charming, its diminutive size and contrasting polished/matte surfaces make The Grace a lovely accessory for many an outfit. The depth and detail of the face lend a rich and luxurious feel invisible in two dimensions. Whether sporty to uptown, the Grace lives up to its name.

Native Eyewear Silencer Interchangeable Sunglasses - Polarized

Native Eyewear Silencer Interchangeable Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 4 October 18, 2005

First of all, in a world of so many gloss black shades, I must say that I LOVE the matte finish of the Asphalt/Brown. Secondly, the lenses are so easy to change out that you may actually find yourself using the other lenses! This practicality is a definite plus, although the drawback is that the lenses will actually pop out if you drop them. In all fairness, they will not be dropping off of your face, thanks to an extra-grippy nosepiece and arms. While you may not think that they carry the cachet of other premium brands, they have replaced Oakley and Smith in my collection thanks to their superb comfort, fit and function.

Excellent mixed-use runner

La Sportiva Cardiff Running Shoe - Men's

La Sportiva Cardiff Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 7, 2005

This seems to be the light-duty SUV of the Sportiva lineup: Ideal for dirt roads and capable on the road yet unafraid of more technical trails. Blocky, "leveled" treads and not-too-hard rubber sticks well and absorb shock on tamer terrain—including asphalt—without sacrificing too much traction on sketchier paths. Lightweight mesh uppers keep them breathing easy at speed. I am a narrow size 12, and these seem very true to size; however, they may not be suited to a wider foot. Aesthetically, they are more orange and silver than the handsome rust and white apparent in the photo, but still exude the trademark Euro Sportiva vibe. If you are looking for a shoe to handle daily mileage on the road and still hold their own in the wild on the weekends, this is a great shoe.

Lowa Tempest II Lo Hiking Boot - Mens

Rating for this product: 5 October 7, 2005

LOWA could probably charge $150 for these; they just feel that good underfoot. Fit and finish are superb, AND I understand that the production of the midsole materials is more environmentally friendly than the otherwise universal EVA. Bonus!! Broad, sturdy soles with serious traction feel right at home on the mountain or trail. This is a day hiker that is worth more than its weight in gold—unreserved five stars.

Lorpen Modal Multisport Shorty Sock

Rating for this product: 5 October 3, 2005

In my mind, this ultra-thin runner stands apart from other socks thanks to its unusually accommodating fit and subsequent functional comfort. The stocking's beauty is in its virtual transparency: It manages moisture and temperature so well that you hardly know you have it on. I think that deserves a five-star gear rating in anybody’s book. These shades are incredible - you've got to wear 'em to believe 'em. The last guys must have missed out on a free gift, 'cause I wasn't expecting a cleaning kit. The Waileas are lighter than light, with high-quality polarized and scratch-resistant lenses, and are practically indestructible (except for those nose piece things). Chaco Jorge Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 July 7, 2005

These upscale sandals are simply SUMPTUOUS! If you're already a Chaco fan, definitely add a pair to your collection: not only do they have the stellar Bio-whatever footbed and nifty, one-strap adjustment, but they are gorgeous and complement a wider range of your wardrobe. If you're going barefoot, drop down a half size; they even seem just a little large with thick-ish socks on - in fact, it seems that they're better suited to the latter, as the heel/ankle strap feels a little rough around the edges. Even so, four plus-PLUS: you'll love 'em.

Rating for this product: 5 June 30, 2005

There's no going back to stinky synthetics after you've worn the real thing, Merino wool. While I had heard plenty of good things about the stuff, I was still amazed by the natural combination of next-to-skin comfort, temperature regulation (dry OR wet), wicking, and "quietness" (shhh!) It's not the softest or the cheapest, but it performs like nothing else. And it's eco-friendly! Care is simple enough: machine wash, lay flat to dry. Five unreserved stars!

This bag is packed (no pun intended) with great features, from the quick-access front pocket (keys, gum, shades) to the handy zip pouch on one side to the Nalgene-worthy net pocket on the other. Add to that burly construction and inside dividers, and you've got a winner. My only gripes are that the shoulder strap doesn't swivel and I've seen cooler, more "grabable" zippers. A high, high four; non-five only because it ain't quite perfect!

Rating for this product: 4 June 28, 2005

There is nothing like having the ability to track your pace in addition to heart rate; this watch is a great package overall. On the plus side, the ergonomic fit is great, complemented by a big, easy-to-read display. Both monitors are relatively comfortable and user friendly. Conversely, this watch doesn't seem to be built to stand up to everyday wear and tear; it's more of a delicate training tool than a day-in-day-out time-teller. Interface is fairly intuitive, although I have seen better setups/button feel. That said, as a training tool, this watch still deserves 4+ of 5. You'll LOVE the ability to pace yourself with your newfound insight on pace (mi/min), distance, and heart rate.

'Bought this watch for my wife, a nurse; she absolutely LOVES it for work: comfortable, readable, user friendly. BUT, it is still made for pretty small wrists, without much give in the band. If it fits, you're set - a pretty, sporty (pretty sporty?) watch that flexes with your wrist.

All right, all right - so they don't breathe quite like your non-GTX kicks. Well, do you want to be able to dunk them mercilessly and slog through mud and snow without a second thought or not?? An external Gore-Tex wrap sheds water well to keep it light, the gaiters are easily and securely fastened and work well, and the sole provides traction on all but the slipperiest surfaces. The very things that might be considered drawbacks (difficult to adjust on the fly, less than ideally breathable) are those things that make these shoes what they are: the best at wet.

Big and Bad

Nixon All Black Roadie Watch

Nixon All Black Roadie Watch

Rating for this product: 4 June 27, 2005

This watch lives up to the reputation setup in the description: The big-fatty band with a big-bad casing translates into big style (a'ight, for those of you wondering "Just how big IS it??" the band is just over 1 1/2 inches wide with a 1 1/4 inch face). Practically speaking, the face is a little busy and the date is practically impossible to see w/o close inspection... but since when was a Nixon leather watch about practicality? Looks sick, super comfy, love it.

Good-looking with a great cut, both functionally and aesthetically. Warm and windproof, super for cool temps and windy weather. Internal mesh and fleece are soft, light, toasty and comfy. BUT:
- When things heat up, fleece gathers moisture, especially against bare arms; layer with a hi-tech base if you'll really be working out (another minor fleece annoyance is how it binds on a base layer when coming off)
- External synthetic retains moisture after a time in rain or snow. Keep a hard shell handy if precipitation is pending
- Could use a drawstring to keep out the cold from below
All in all, a sweet North Face jacket for what it's made, and this at a killer price.
