Perfect for touring... ok at resorts

Black Diamond Fritschi Diamir Freeride Plus Binding

Black Diamond Fritschi Diamir Freeride Plus Binding

Rating for this product: 5 December 8, 2008

Ideal binding for backcountry tours... probably the best. Great mix of lightweight and burly. However, if you are looking for a crossover biding (backcountry and resort), these would work ok, but it may not be your best option. Just realize that the marker bindings are going to be heavier.

Little stove, big results.

Primus Micron Ti Stove

Primus Micron Ti Stove

Rating for this product: 5 December 8, 2008

Basic stove without any of bells and whistles, but I can't imagine using anything smaller or lighter. Besides, with a little improvising, you can rig your own windscreen / heat reflector. I have owned it for 5+ years and have never had any problems lighting it or cooking. Highly recommended.

Black Diamond Covert with Avalung Winter Pack - 1343-1953 cu in

December 5, 2008

No, but if you use a twist-tie, you can fasten the water tube and the avalung together -- and if after the slide has settled and you are buried, you can still move your head 3 degrees to each side -- you will be able to suck both water and air. If not, prepare for a parched wait.Yea....Aspiration is bad...Although you probably could rig them together, it is probably worth noting that one shoulder strap is equipped with the avalang and the other is meant to hold the tubing into your hydration bladder.

Like em... but not sure I think they are trail runners

The North Face Ultra 103 XCR Trail Running Shoe - Men's

The North Face Ultra 103 XCR Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 28, 2008

These are great shoes... can be used for hiking, snoeshowing, or just about any sport. In addition, they are great to wear around town (especially in rain/snow)...the waterproofing works well! These shoes are definitely on the heavy end of a running shoe... I would probably go lighter unless you are traversing sloppy terrain. I think of them as more of a lightweight hiking shoe and a great one at that.

Black Diamond Traverse Ski Poles

Black Diamond Traverse Ski Poles

Rating for this product: 5 August 25, 2008

Owned for one season. Used about 20 times and no damage yet after some good spills (I usually replace poles every 1-2 seasons because of damage... I guess I have a knack for breaking poles). Also works well with snow saw (sold separate). You can't beat the product for the price.

Good lightweight glove

Mountain Hardwear Epic Glove - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Epic Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 25, 2008

I wear these on warm ski days in the backcountry and they work well. They are a good lightweight glove with a a great grip on the inside. Sizing was true. My only complaint is they do soak up a little water on the slushy days... just know that these gloves are water resistant, not repellent (as advertised).

Mountain Hardwear Canyon Pant - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Canyon Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 25, 2008

These are my favorite spring / summer / fall pants. Quick drying, tough material and breathable. Sizing is true. I was expecting less from pants that are so light...

Good pants... functional.

Marmot Randonnee Pant - Men's

Marmot Randonnee Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 25, 2008

Perfect amount on bulk for the backcountry (don't overheat, but keeps you warm on blizzard days. They are very functional and move well. No problems with durability. Suspenders are easy to adjust. The suspenders have a tendency to slip off from time to time... it could be a slippery layer underneath, but it would be nice if the straps had a little more grip. Also, I sometimes confuse the side pocket zipper with the side zips (right next to each other and they feel the same).

Can't beat it.

Black Diamond Covert with Avalung Winter Pack - 1343-1953 cu in

Black Diamond Covert with Avalung Winter Pack - 1343-1953 cu in

Rating for this product: 5 August 25, 2008

If you are getting an avalung, there is no reason not to get it integrated into a backpack. I never used the external avalang, but I can't imagine it would be easy to organize (too many straps for a backpack, avalung and beacon). The integration is brilliant.

The pack is also well designed and perfect for long day trips (32L) with a compartment for your saftegy gear (shovel, beacon, etc) and another compartment with enough room for an extra layer, food and other stuff. The only minor enhancements I can love to see.... 1. An integrated crampon carrier (optional) to secure the outside of the pack and 2. something to better prevent the Camelbak hose from freezing (although that is probably a Camelbak issue.

Great backpack for backcountry skiing. Well designed for avalanche gear and packing skis. Also, it has just enough space to do an overnight (if you pack light).
