Not up to usual TNF standards.

The North Face Varius Guide Pant - Men's

The North Face Varius Guide Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 June 4, 2010

I've used TNF gear for well over 20 years and been more than happy with all of their products until this pair of pants. The pant material and weight are just right. The full leg side zippers and pockets are great. They were durable and waterproof. What I felt were faults are the following: 1.) The suspenders only attach in the front. This design flaw enabled my pack's hipbelt to push the rear waistband of the pants down allowing snow and cold air underneath. 2.) The velcro waist cincher did not fully tighten around my waist(Lg pants / I'm a 36" waist). These two afformentioned problems caused the pants to bellow out at the waist when I wasn't wearing a pack. I paid full price and was disappointed. I've returned them. They may be worth the sale price.

Great Bibs!

Mountain Hardwear Beryllium Bib - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Beryllium Bib - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 4, 2010

These bibs are great! I just used them several days last week on a ski trip on Mt Rainier. They have full leg zippers that help vent your legs, a built in belt at the waist and a high back that prevents my pack hip belt from pushing the rear waistband down. The combination of the front to rear suspenders and the intregral waist belt also solved problems I've had with other ski pants. These are more a pant than bib but they are exactely what I needed for backcountry skiing and alpine ascents.

Best shell I've ever owned.

Mountain Hardwear Carnic Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Carnic Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 4, 2010

I recently purchased this jacket and it exceeded all of my expectations. I've been working and recreating in the Pacific NW for over 35 years and this is the best jacket I have used to date. The jacket breaths well and has armpit zippers for additional ventilation. The jackets ablility to shed water was the best I've seen. I am 6'1" tall and 210lbs. The Large fit was a perfect fit for me = not to bulky but with enough room for some layering underneath.

Lightweight does not mean durable.

The North Face Venture Side Zip Pant - Men's

The North Face Venture Side Zip Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 30, 2007

I have several TNF products and until now have felt that the extra cost was justified. I was looking to go with a lighter set of raingear when I happened upon TNF's Venture, side zip pants. Living in the Pacific NW (the wet side of WA State) I've become a bit of a raingear snob. This said I offer the following:
These truely are "lightweight" and lack the durability that TNF is known for. The pants tore on the first snag I encountered. I would recommend these pants as foul weather running gear but not for much heavier use than that.
The fit in the thigh and groin area was tight for me. I have a medium build (6'1" and 200lbs) and found the lg size pants lacked room for movement.
I think that TNF is on track with the idea of lightweight rainpants with full side zips but this item falls short. In a desert or tropical environment these pants may work but here in the PNW, I found them lacking.
