good looking, tough, and waterproof, but...

Patagonia Rubicon Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Rubicon Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 15, 2007

I get compliments on this jacket - it has an interesting denim look to the fabric. In typical Patagonia fashion, it is well built. The construction is outstanding, most of the features work well, and the waterproofness, windproofness and durability of the material is great.
I would not use this jacket for long backcountry tours. It is a bit heavy and bulky - I have lighter shells I would use for that. But, for a quick lap or bootpack to that peak just out of bounds it would be fine.
Two negatives:
1. Those two zippers across the chest that look like pockets are actually ventilation – pitzips would work better for keeping the weather out. If I wanted to ventilate my chest, I would just zip down the jacket(!) These zips are redundant and unnecessary.
2. The removable hood would be a nice feature if it weren’t so difficult to snap in place in the front collar. You have to take your gloves off to get your fingers in this small fold of fabric. Pain. I just leave my hood always attached.

Ultimate snow camper

Black Diamond Mega Light Shelter

Black Diamond Mega Light Shelter

Rating for this product: 5 February 8, 2006

I bought my Mega Light three years ago and have used it on Shasta, Rainier, and an 8-day ski traverse of the Sierras. It has been a great purchase. The tent shines in the snow, after you set it up you can carve out sleeping platforms, tables, and a deep entryway so you can stand up tall while changing. Other benefits of floorless tents: You can set up your stove inside, you don't have to worry about spilling food, and when nature calls at 2am you just have to unzip your bag a little ways and take care of business lying down! I was at first skeptical of the ski pole coupler but it works perfectly. The tent does surprisingly well in wind, but strong gusts can get sketchy—anchor it well! It packs down incredibly small, sometimes you have to rummage around for it in your pack!

Everything you need, nothing you don't

Osprey Packs Switch 25+5 - 1500cu in

Osprey Packs Switch 25+5 - 1500cu in

Rating for this product: 5 February 8, 2006

I've had this pack a couple seasons now and I love it. It takes a little getting used to, dealing with the removable hydration pack can be tricky and the zipper access to the main compartment can be awkward, but after a couple tours you figure it out. It's just the right size for day trips and everything has its place: skins, shovels, probe, food, sunscreen, keys. When you have to boot pack, it carries skis exceptionally well. It's very comfortable and durable, mine still looks new. My only complaint is that it smells weird, kind of a new car/chemically/skunky smell that I thought would have faded away by now, but it hasn't.

ClipFix tail didn't work with my skis

Black Diamond Ascension Nylon Clipfix Skins

Black Diamond Ascension Nylon Clipfix Skins

Rating for this product: 2 March 29, 2004

I was hesitant to purchase these after hearing of some problems with the ClipFix, but I went for it anyway. I bought the 110mm skins. The tail clips wouldn't even work on my skis (Fischer BigStix 8.6) and the tip loops were way too small. My skis have a slightly curved tail and they are thicker than other skis in the tail. The ClipFix system wouldn't fit right. Also, the tips of my skis are wide (120mm) and squarish so the tip loops didn't fit right either. I ended up buying a tip/tail kit and cut off the ClipFix and put on the regular tail system like those found on the GlideLight skins. Now they work fine.
