Spectacular Ultralight Backpacking Option

MSR E-Bivy

Rating for this product: 5 July 10, 2009

I just did a 2 day backpack in the Wallowas and used the MSR E-Bivy. I'm really jazzed about it. I recommend it for ultralight backpacking. My pack was so light after replacing my tent with this. For the price you could buy one for a friend. It adds some warmth - I was a little warm in my 40 degree sleeping bag on a 35 degree night. The sky threatened for rain so I kept the head flap over my face all night. I was able to breathe fine but my breath produced a fair amount of condensation on the sack around my face. I should have kept the flap under my head until it actually sleeted. I intend to use this on all my backpacking trips.

How do you breathe? Is there something that keeps the head flap off of your face?

Beautiful Shoes

Inov 8 F-Lite 230 Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Inov 8 F-Lite 230 Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 2, 2008

The blue color is awesome! These are the most comfortable shoes I have ever run in! I tried these after reading a convincing article on barefoot running. Their low profile gives an exceptional feel for the trail. The mesh is very breathable. They don't block water, but they drain fast. The flexible sole doesn't hurt my feet like most other shoes. The toe box gives my wide toe area room while keeping my low volume feet snug. I went up 1/2 a size from normal. I have run about a dozen 8-12 mile runs on packed dirt and moderately rocky trails. These shoes seem quite durable. Pronation control, protection plates, and cushioning are overrated. Get closer to nature with these shoes.

Great For Trail Running In The Snow

Outdoor Research Flex-Tex Gaiter

Outdoor Research Flex-Tex Gaiter

Rating for this product: 5 June 26, 2008

These work great for trail running in the snow. I can tuck my running pants into the top of the gaiter - my non Gore Tex shoes stay mostly dry, no snow gets in my shoes, and my ankles/shins stay warm and dry. I had to cinch the below-the-foot strap real tight to keep the heel part over the shoe, but now it works. These are sized way too big - I went with the S/M for my 10 1/2 shoes.

Warm Bag

Marmot Helium Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

Marmot Helium Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 5 June 26, 2008

I took this on a trip to the Sawtooths in May for some backpacking/ski touring and car camping. I woke up sweaty on a 19 degree morning with my bag unzipped all the way. Wow! I was using a foam pad on dry ground. I was just right on a 15 degree morning on the snow. I'm a somewhat warm sleeper. I'm 6' and the regular seems to fit just right. The shell kept the heavy frost out. The bag packs down fairly small. I love this bag and my Marmot Atom also. The Helium has a stiffer shell and a little more room inside than the Atom.

Great Do Everything Hiking Shoe

Montrail Stratos XCR Hiking Boot - Men's

Montrail Stratos XCR Hiking Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 19, 2008

I'm on my second pair. I have used these for everything from short, fast dayhiking to weeklong backpacking. The best part is the padded ankle that wraps around and keeps your foot in the back of the boot when going down steep terrain. The fit is very comfortable. The traction is decent. The sole seems to last forever. I did put an inch long gash in the upper on sharp rocks. The waterproofing works until you punch through the wet snow for a while.
