Patagonia Bucket Hat

Patagonia Bucket Hat

Rating for this product: 5 1 day ago

I picked one of these up in the new Spring 2012 version, and I must say that I am quite impressed. The brim is now a full inch wider, making it a legit hiking hat for me here in sunny So Cal, and the fit and sizing has changed as well.

In last year's (last season's, I guess) model, the large fit me too loosely (it was moving around and would fall off if I leaned over), and the medium too tightly (uncomfortably so), but the Spring 2012 model fits perfectly in a large, with just the right amount of wiggle room. The crown depth on this hat is also just a touch less than on most comparable sun and bucket hats, which I like. It means the hat doesn't creep down too low on my forehead while hiking, which I usually have to accomodate for by cinching a hat's adjustment down, which sometimes affects comfort.

I am loving this lightweight, breathable, comfy offering from Patagonia!

cut significantly slimmer than the previous iteration

Patagonia GI III Short - Men's

Patagonia GI III Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 1 day ago

Many folks dread the newest "refresh" or redesign of a favorite piece of gear or clothing, and I am no exception, so I shuddered a bit at seeing that my favorite hiking shorts were changing. We have all seen nearly perfect pieces of gear and clothing go horribly awry, as with the classic REI Sahara shorts (need I say more?)

The first thing I noticed in the description of the GI III shorts vs the previous models, the GI II, was that the inseam had gone from 11 inches to 10. Mind you, I am no fan of the "basketball shorts" look, but I don't want to look like Magnum, PI, either.

Looking closer, I saw that the fabric was changing to Taslan, a new color was available (Alpha Green), and the belt was not quite as "captive" as before.

I took a chance and ordered a pair...

The new fabric is nice and soft, and not at all crunchy. The new zipper pulls are a nice touch, and the difference in the belt is barely noticeable. I like the new Alpha Green.

Now the serious business. The one-inch difference in inseam length is noticeable, but not a big deal. Be aware, however, that these shorts are cut significantly slimmer than the previous iteration. Significantly. Mrs. B-P likes them a lot, and says they flatter my physique more so than the "baggy" GI IIs, but I'll have to say, I was initially a bit worried that they might be too sleek. I am now used to them and wear them more than my old ones, but just know what you are getting into.

All said, for me, these are an improvement over the GI II shorts, and I am relieved. I even bought another pair in Forge Grey.

I picked one of these up recently, but my little dude is not yet old enough to roll in it. The construction, features, and fit are all top-notch, and he enjoys sitting in it. The storage, hydration bladder compatability, and foot support were key features for me, as I want to be able to roll solo with him and not need another bag. I will post an update after it has been field tested.

Patagonia Nano Puff Vest - Men's

February 3, 2012

I see you posted that you wear the medium in the Nano Puff Pullover, and you are about 6ft and 190lb, so I would say stay with that, as I think the large would be too baggy. I'm guessing you are quite slim, since the medium Nano Puff Pullover fits you. The medium in both pieces are probably a bit snug through the chest and back, but if that's the fit you want, go for it.

Patagonia Nano Puff Vest - Men's

February 1, 2012

I'm 5'11.5" and 187 lbs., and the medium is snug through the chest and back. The large is more "comfortable" on me, and the length is adequate for someone taller than me, so you should be good in a large. I wanted mine to be able to fit over a T-shirt and be a bit more formfitting, so medium was the way to go for that. Good luck.

Patagonia Micro D Hoodie - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 20, 2012

My favorite fleece, hands down. Super soft, great cut and fit. Warm enough for the cooler So Cal mornings and evenings, but not so hot or bulky that I can't leave it on when I get where I'm going. As another reviewer mentioned, it's definitely not windproof, or really even wind-resistant, it cuts right through this. Pair it with a shell or a down vest if you need to.

Outdoor Research Sun Bucket Hat

Outdoor Research Sun Bucket Hat

Rating for this product: 5 January 20, 2012

I picked one of these up in the Sand/Dark Grey scheme and so far I am quite pleased with it. The fit and comfort are great, and I like that the brim size seems to strike the balance between the limited coverage of a ballcap and the ridiculousness of some of the floppy-brimmed sun hats. The fabric is breathable and soft, and I love the size/fit adjustabilty. I never seem to be able to wear the fitted hats; I fall between sizes. I wear a 7 1/2 to 7 5/8 in fitted hats and the XL fits well; I cinch the cord down ever so slightly. All in all, highly recommended.

October 28, 2011

The Marmot Zeus has 3.5 oz of 800 fill down, which puts it right between the Patagonia Down Sweater (3 oz) and the montbell Alpine Light Jacket (4 oz).

Inventory questions like this usually sit idle on the item page forever. I would recommend clicking on the gray "Chat Now" box on the upper right of the page to initiate a chat with a gear expert. They have immediate and real-time access to inventory and order information. Hope that helps.

my first-ever piece of Arc'teryx gear

Arc'teryx Charlie Toque

Arc'teryx Charlie Toque

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2011

Bought one of these for an around-town beanie this winter. It's my first-ever piece of Arc'teryx gear (cuz who can afford this stuff, seriously?), and it's quite nice.

Suunto Vector Altimeter Watch

September 30, 2011

A buddy and I have both have the same Vector, and we used them in the Grand Canyon in July. He attached his to his shoulder strap and I wore mine on my wrist. We compared readings every time we checked the temperature, and each time it was either the same, or within a degree or two of each other. We have done similar experiments in other conditions, including much colder temps, with the same results. In my experience, there is no real need to take the watch off to get a temp reading, unless you are concerned about the possibility of a degree or two of difference.

Patagonia Nano Puff Pullover Insulated Jacket - Men's

September 13, 2011

I would just go with Ryan's suggestion or a Micro Puff. More insulation, heavier shell fabric, and a windflap behind the zipper. At half the cost of two Nano Puffs.

Patagonia Nano Puff Vest - Men's

September 11, 2011

Micro Puff vs Nano Puff Vest...I know the stats...The Micro Puff has a heavier shell fabric, a windflap behind the zipper, and 100g PrimaLoft vs 60g for the Nano. The Nano comes in an ounce and a half lighter. If you compared the two and bought one or the other, why did you choose it?

Patagonia Micro Puff Vest - Men's

September 11, 2011

I'm 5'11.5" and 187 lbs, athletic build. I tried on the Micro Puff Vest today in Medium and it fit snugly over my T-shirt, but not too tightly or uncomfortably so. The Large gave me a little more room for an extra layer underneath and was a bit longer in back. So, as usual, I waer a "medium and a half" in Patagonia stuff. If I get one of these, I'll probably opt for the Large, but I want to try the Nano Puff Vest on first and see what I think. I'm looking for something for casual wear this Fall and Winter, around town over a T-shirt, pairing it up with a beanie when needed.

The North Face Recon Backpack - 2015cu in

September 10, 2011

It's a 420D nylon and 1680D ballistic nylon bag, so it will be tough, but zippers and seams aren't designed for water resistance. I wouldn't count on it in any real rain, as it will wet through.

Big Agnes Peggy SL Sleeping Bag 15 Degree Down - Women's

September 10, 2011

I guess I just don't really get the fascination with EN ratings, but I'll offer this. Big Agnes makes a quality bag that consistently meets their stated temperature ratings. If you want a 15 degree bag, and you like this one, go for it. If it doesn't meet your expectations, send it back. Ratings don't matters if the bag doesn't perform (or if it does, for that matter).

Medium if you plan to layer. The small would be snug (and maybe short) at your size and you would swim in a large.

Patagonia Nano Puff Pullover Insulated Jacket - Men's

September 8, 2011

Incrementally, it's about the same difference in shade as the other colors that changed from Spring to Fall. Clementine to Mango, Gecko Green to Lemon Lime, and Bali Blue to Lagoon, with, as Ty said, the Forge Grey being darker than the Narwhal Grey.
