Not bad, but not amazing

Brunton RL6 LED Headlamp

Brunton RL6 LED Headlamp

Rating for this product: 3 April 1, 2009

This is a solid, well built headlamp. The double battery packs on the strap help distribute the weight, but four AA batteries weighs a lot no matter how you look at it. Using lithium AAs (lighter, longer lasting) instead of alkalines or rechargeables makes a big difference. The light is bright and the adjustable settings are useful if you want to save battery power. The red led is not very bright. I would have liked it to be bright enough to see by, but it's really only good enough to see things that are close to your face, like a map or a compass, or that branch at face level that you didn't see until it was too late to avoid headbutting it. The only other negative comment I have about this headlamp is that the mount, though tiltable, does not tilt far enough down, so I have to position the thing way down on my forehead to get the right angle. Maybe it's the shape of my head or just my height (6'1"), but this seems like a make-or-break kind of design decision, and Brunton didn't quite make it. I'm keeping this headlamp for use around the house because it's good enough for that job and it seems to have good battery life, but I won't be taking it on any long night hikes or backpacking trips.

Good solid basic headlamp

Brunton L3 3-Watt LED Headlamp

Brunton L3 3-Watt LED Headlamp

Rating for this product: 4 March 2, 2009

This is a good headlamp. It is solid and the removable battery packs are a nice touch. It is very bright, though it doesn't seem to have the same illuminating power as the xenon bulb headlamps I've used in the past (although batteries last many times longer when running an LED than they do with a xenon bulb). I have not used this lamp enough to comment on the battery life, but the mechanics and ergonomics of it are good, and it is lightweight, comfortable, and sturdy.

Good quality jacket; wrong fit.

Marmot Sharp Point Softshell Jacket - Men's

Marmot Sharp Point Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 2, 2009

This is a good jacket. The material in particular is super-comfortable and the craftsmanship is of good quality for the cost. However, I had to return the one I ordered because the although the fit around the shoulders was a lot more roomy than I needed, the sleeves weren't long enough for my arms. I am 6'1" 165lbs, with longish arms. Marmot makes great jackets but they're designed for thicker folks. I'd say go with a Mountain Hardwear if you have the tall and thin build as the fit is much better.

Great design, questionable fabric choice

Mountain Hardwear Icestone Softshell Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Icestone Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 11, 2008

I looked at about six different jackets and this one was the best by far. For the price I paid (about $140) it was the best deal too. I am tall and somewhat lanky (6'1" / 160lbs) and I have trouble finding jackets with long enough arms that don't fit me like a tent, but this one is perfect. I ordered a M. I wouldn't recommend it for people with broader than average shoulders or shorter than average arms. I love the chest and wrist pockets, and the thumbholes make this otherwise excellent jacket over the top. It is also comfortably stretchy, not stiff at all. My only complaint is that the relatively wide weave of the exterior fabric makes it prone to catching on stuff and absorbing fine debris like dust and dog hair. If you can handle that, this is otherwise a fine mid to cold-weather jacket, though below 30 degrees you'll definitely need to layer to keep comfortable (unless you're working real hard, in which case it would probably be fine down to about 20).
