Backcountry.com Stoic Inbounds Glove - Men's

November 27, 2009

I'm looking for a glove that I can use to ride my dirt bike throughout the winter. The Kombi gloves that I have are a little bulky to work the clutch smoothly. I won't be riding in the snow directly but I often see temperatures down into the teens, or lower, plus the windchill.

Thanks!

Stoic Welder Hi Softshell Jacket - Men's

Stoic Welder Hi Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 16, 2009

Just picked the jacket up from SAC and so far impressed. The weather has started to cool off and I can hang out on the porch when it is 20 degrees and not worry about getting cold. This jacket appears to be well constructed (haven't truly tested it yet) and is definitely very warm. The pockets are usable and the hood is not obtrusive. The hood doesn't seem big enough to house a helmet, but it is adjustable and comfortable. The velcro closures on the wrists should be enough to keep the majority of snow out. I think that my main parka is going to get lonely this winter... I am also happy that stoic put the pit zips in. The material is breathable, but sometimes those pits just need some air! The put zips are mesh lined so you won't fill your side with snow when you eat it on those warmer days. The jacket seems a little heavy but it does replace 2 layers with 1 for backcountry play so it really isn't too bad.

Bottom line: I'm impressed and I have started recommending Stoic clothing to friends. I have been looking at their other products for something that I like so much I could convince myself I need it.

Stoic Welder Hi Softshell Jacket - Men's

November 16, 2009

This jacket is definitely cut athletically. I'm 6' and 180 lbs and the large suits me well. The sleeves are too tight on me to put many layer underneath, although with as warm as it is a body260 IB should be plenty. I bought the same size (large) as I generally do in jackets. I have a large golite rain shell, large r4 patagucci fleece, large hoodies, large welder hi-loft softshell.... you get the idea. I'd say it fits true to size. A medium should fit him fine.

Great piece of clothing

Horny Toad Mojo Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Horny Toad Mojo Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 9, 2009

I got a great deal on this on SAC but had to return the shirt because I was swimming in it! I'm 6' and 180 lbs and ordered a Large. The Medium would be a better fit for me. I generally wear L in t-shirts and M in colored shirts or western shirts. I should have thought before I click buy now...

If I had another deal like I originally had then I would not hesitate to buy at least 1, if not more. The shirt had great quality and attention to detail. Plus, it looked great.

Great all around pack

DAKINE Pro 2 Backpack - 1600cu in

DAKINE Pro 2 Backpack - 1600cu in

Rating for this product: 4 November 9, 2009

I just picked this pack up from SAC and I am pretty stoked so far. I bought it with the intention that it would be a multi-use pack. I needed something for school, small day hikes and ski season. The diagonal ski carry system is pretty solid. I don't know how it handles while actually in the back country, but I am expecting good results. There is enough room for quite a bit of gear, plus stuff can be strapped on the outside if necessary. The hip belt pocket it a great addition. Holds my point-n-shoot well and it fleece lined so I don't need to worry about damage to it. I used this to day hike humphreys in Northern Arizona and it worked out better than expected.

I'm looking forward to the winter so that I can load the skis up and take the pack for a real spin.

Wierd Shoulder Straps

Osprey Packs Circuit Backpack - 1900 cu in

Osprey Packs Circuit Backpack - 1900 cu in

Rating for this product: 1 October 4, 2009

Not impressed with the shoulder straps on the pack. If the suspension was designed a bit differently then this would be a pretty good pack. It is lacking a good bladder pocket and external water bottle holders. The side pockets will hold a half liter nalgene or travel coffee mug. Not too useful. The rest of the organization is great. The material is strong and the pack is well constructed. I wish it fit better. Then I would keep it. As it is I am sending it back.

Princeton Tec Yukon HL Headlamp

Princeton Tec Yukon HL Headlamp

Rating for this product: 2 August 22, 2009

The light intensity on the long distance function was not as bright as I would have liked. The close range 3-LED function was nice for reading or close proximity use.

What turned me off the most was the huge battery pack and the exceptionally long cord. The light would be impractical, at best, to use as a headlamp with the battery pack attached to the straps. It is better suited to mounting the battery pack in a daypack or somewhere other than your head.

Overall I was less than impressed with this product.

Comfortable, nice

Tecnica Dragon 120 HiPerFit Boot - Men's

Tecnica Dragon 120 HiPerFit Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 22, 2009

Picked these boots up in town towards the end of our ski season to push a set of BD Havoc skis down the moutain. They happened to be the only boot in my small town that fit me. I figured that was a sign. I went shopping expecting to get a 28 or 28.5 and ended up with a 27. I only got to ski two more days this season after getting the boots, but both days were great. The first day on the slopes was Showdown, Montana, after a foot of fresh stuff. I kept great control of my skis and my feet lasted from first chair to last chair with only a 15 minute lunch break. Impressive comfort for a brand new boot with a 120 flex rating. If you can afford 'em, buy 'em! Best piece of advice I ever got when getting into skiing: "Don't set a budget on ski boots. Buy the very best you can afford and you will enjoy your days on the slopes. Buy some cheap ones and you'll be hating life after a short time."

Best shoe

Montrail Continental Divide Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Montrail Continental Divide Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 21, 2009

I've been a fan of these shoes for a few years now. About to start my third pair. I get at least a year of life out of each pair so far. I used to run in a Nike shoes and then strapped these on my feet. Rocky trails became smooth and asphalt and hardpack became soft. They even performed solidly on the 22+ mile day hike up Mt. Whitney. My biggest fear with these shoes is that they will stop production of them.

Warm and Dry

Merrell Task Insulated Jacket - Men's

Merrell Task Insulated Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 23, 2008

Just got this jacket and I love it. I wear an icebreaker bodyfit260 shirt under this jacket and was warm and toasty down to -5° plus a windchill. Keep in mind that I generally run on the warm side. Kept fresh powder out while falling left and right. The sleeves have a good velcro closure that is easy to get gloves on and off with. Powder skirt is a great addition. My only gripe is that without the hood the neck cannot be tightened to keep the elements out. Awesome jacket and highly recommended. Worth every penny.

CRKT Point Guard Knife

CRKT Point Guard Knife

Rating for this product: 5 December 23, 2008

This knife is great for everyday use. The edge stays sharp for quite a while and the size is perfect. I haven't found anything to complain about! Picked it up for supercheap on SAC and haven't looked back.

Backcountry.com Siphon Primaloft Hooded Jacket - Men's

November 13, 2008

How does this jacket perform on the slopes? I need a new ski jacket that can double as a warm winter coat for the town. Is the jacket long enough to keep the snow out or have a powder skirt?

Mediocre at best

Oakley Edge Short-Sleeve Mountain Bike Jersey - Men's

Oakley Edge Short-Sleeve Mountain Bike Jersey - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 November 13, 2008

The jersey works, but it is not great. The fabric is pilling after just a few washings. The full zip billows out and gets in the way. I'd rather have a half zip standard jersey and skip the full zip. The zippered mp3 pocket in the back is good if you don't want to lose your ipod! I can't bring water on my bike unless I have a camelbak so the pocket doesn't do me much good.

The jersey works, but there is better on the market.
