  • Bio:

Just started hiking/camping in 2007 at age 48. Can't believe I've missed so much all these years. Living in northwest Louisiana, I have to travel some to see some pretty country, so Arkansas is a great neighbor. Love the Ozarks (6 hours away), and the Ouachitas will do in a pinch (2.5 hours away). October through March offer the best temperatures for camping in this part of the country, so I go dormant from May through September. I don't have enough money for all the gear I want. Donations accepted and appreciated.

Made For the Long Haul

Arc'teryx Bora 80 Backpack - 4390-5000cu in

Rating for this product: 4 July 31, 2008

I've worn it for several days in Arkansas. It's heavy-duty, and a little heavy - ultralighters need not apply. Very well made. I really like the wet pouch, and the detachable lid is a snap to get on and off. The side pockets will hold water bottles, but be sure to cinch up the little bungees tight. They're really better suited for energy bars and snacks. You can pack a bunch of stuff in this pack, and it's comfortable.

Works For Me

Big Agnes Sunnyside 2-Person 3-Season with Footprint

Rating for this product: 5 June 26, 2008

Bought one in March 2007. I've spent a total of 10 nights in it. My first thunderstorm wasn't a good experience, but Big Agnes replaced the rain fly (good experience with Customer Service). I've been in rain since with no problems. It's well ventilated, roomy for larger folks. I'm 6'3" and the length is fine. I bring my pack in and have plenty of room with my 25"X78" Thermarest. On two occasions I've had a hiking partner inside with no problems. You just need to buy a couple of extra stakes for the ends of the rain fly.

Does What It Should

Polar Pak Bode Hydration Pack - 70 oz

Rating for this product: 5 March 29, 2008

It carries 2 liters, my wallet in the zip pocket, and a flannel shirt and some power bars cinched down under the bungee. On overnighters, I've carried it under the lid of my Bora 80. And of course, I've taken the bladder out of it and used it in the hydration sleeve of my Bora 80. Works good either way. It's served its purpose as far as I'm concerned.

Light, Packs Small, Knocks the Wind Off

The North Face Venture Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 29, 2008

I haven't actually used it in a downpour, but in a misty windy evening it kept the drizzle out, and the wind too. It folds into the left pocket, it's light, and it packs up pretty small.
