Altimitts

Outdoor Research Alti Mitt - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 December 25, 2006

Superb: well made and extremely warm. My only complaint is that there's no fleece or other soft surface on which to wipe my nose.

Arcteryx Theta SL

Arc'teryx Theta SL Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 2, 2005

Functional and beautifully made. If I had had the extra $, I would probably have opted for the Theta AR, which is all Gore-Tex XCR. The PacLite used on the SL does feel a bit more clammy on the inside, and does not seem as durable on the outside. However, the SL model is probably half the weight, which is a definite plus, and it is every bit as waterproof. As far as I can tell so far, it is also very breathable. So in short, all things are trade offs. But for the low weight and relatively low cost, I'd say this shell cannot be beat.

Light but not as warm as I hoped

Marmot Helium Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 4 May 12, 2003

The bag is wondrously light and beautifully made. But it's not as warm as I hoped—I was a bit chilly at night on a late April trip on the AT in Massachusetts (temp in low 20s). Then again I tend to be a cold sleeper. I am going to sell this bag, probably on eBay, and replace it with the Lithium, the 0 degree version of the same design.
