SmartWool Microweight Crew Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's
September 8, 2009
I have not had a problem with shrinkage in any of my merino gear (Icebreaker, Smartwool, and Backcountry brands). I wash my merino in cold water and lay flat to dry. I also use Sport Wash, but I am sure that anything that rinses clean would work also.

Horny Toad Mali Dress - Women's

Only as much as woven cotton fabric has. There is no Lycra or anything like that in the dress--it is 100% cotton.

Backcountry.com Stoic 2.0 Shell - Men's
July 21, 2009
I agree with wan2787354. I think that it works wonderfully as a shell for 4-seasons use. It is completely waterproof for use as a rain jacket, and if one wears insulating layers underneath it works during colder pursuits as well.
That said, it is still a jacket. You will be a bit warm if you are really pushing yourself during an 85 degree summer rain.

The North Face Apex Bionic Hooded Softshell Jacket
July 2, 2009
No, there is no drawstring on the hood.
The trim is slightly bunched and the material has some stretch--that is about it as far as how it stays on your head. You can kind of see it in the picture.

Mountain Hardwear Enterprise Backpack - 1900cu in
June 30, 2009
Yes, it is water resistant like a nylon-based backpack would be. There are also flaps that go over the zippers that help to resist water leaks, too. I have had no problems with water getting in the bag after being in the rain for a short time.
It would be good enough to walk from the parking lot into work, but you may want to do a water-proofing treatment or a packcover if you are looking to bike 5 miles into work in the pouring rain.

Yes, two of them. It is made with the inside of the side pockets and the front of the jacket. They are the perfect size for googles or gloves.

Backcountry.com Stoic 2.0 Shell - Men's
June 5, 2009
While I am not similiar to your size, I believe that going with what the last two sentences' recommendation is the way to go. Since you are looking to use a midlayer, I would go one size up from your usual. I have a 46" chest, and I went with the XXL so I could use my Siphon Wool as a midlayer.
The Bombshell compares to Gore-Tex Pro, so it will not breathe as much as your present eVent jacket. But, as you were thinking, it will also stand up to more abuse.

Millet Belay Device Jacket - Men's
June 2, 2009
Yes, a US men's size small is equal to a European men's medium.
Using the drop-down box, you would select your US size, but when you get the item the tag will state one size larger.

I don't know what is going on up there in the specs area, but James is correct it is 20.1 inches which is 51 centimeters. I guess they did not get either of the numbers right...

Backcountry.com Stoic 2.0 Shell - Men's
May 28, 2009
I will answer my own question as it may help others thinking about a purchase...
My old rain jacket, a fifty dollar Columbia variety, packed up to the size of a Chunky Soup can (it is a size XXL). The Stoic 2.0 packs up to the size of a family-size can of SpaghettiOs (also size XXL), and when rolled-up fits nicely in its hood. Sorry about the canned food references, but that was the first thing that I thought of when trying to explain the relative sizes.
I just recently received my Stoic 2.0, so I have not had a chance to put it to the test in the field. However, my first impression is that this jacket is much, much better than my previous shell. I am actually glad that purchased this jacket versus some of the other brands of shells that I was looking at that cost more than double. The Bombshell fabric is no joke, and I am looking forward to wearing this up against Nature's worst!

Icebreaker SuperFine150 Anaconda V Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's
May 28, 2009
This does not fit like a regular t-shirt. This Icebreaker will fit like an athletic cut or workout shirt.
Pay attention to the size chart in regards to the chest. In most tops, 46 inch is an XL, but in this shirt it is an XXL.
If you are looking for more of a normal fit t-shirt, take a look at the Hopper. That still has an athletic cut, but it is a bit more relaxed. The Backcountry merino t-shirt is nice, too, but I think that is more of a 120 weight.

Backcountry.com Siphon Wool Hooded Jacket - Men's
May 18, 2009
I am about the same height as you, and the XXL fits me perfectly. The bottom goes to my waist and the arms are plenty long. The Siphon is a great jacket, but it will not resist the elements as well as the more technical Fugitive due to the difference in materials.

Backcountry.com Siphon Wool Hooded Jacket - Men's
May 18, 2009
It may make it more water resistant, but it is never going to work that great no matter what you use. The problem is the fabric--the fuzziness of the outside will trap water and prevent it from rolling right off. No spay-on or wash-in product is going to prevent you from getting wet if caught in severe for extended times in this jacket. However, it was never meant to be that type of jacket, so you will have to take a look at what your needs are.

Arc'teryx Venta AR Softshell Jacket - Men's
May 18, 2009
Arcteryx jackets have an athletic fit, so take that into consideration when choosing your size. For instance, I have a 46 inch chest. If I want to wear anything more than a baselayer under the soft shell, I need to go with a XXL because the XL is tight.

Patagonia Wool 2 Zip Neck Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's
May 17, 2009
Since this is a 'slim fit' top, the xxl would already be tight. Unfortunately, the xl is not going to work for you.
If you are looking for a different merino top, Backcountry sells some through their house brand, Ibex, Smartwool, and Icebreaker that you could look into.

Petzl TacTikka XP Adapt Headlamp
May 8, 2009
If you take a look at the bottom of the unit (not the back where the batteries are, but he part of the light that would be the closest to your forehead if you had it on), you will see a small indention for pulling up the frame. Just pry that up, remove the frame, and change out the diffuser.

Arc'teryx Rampart Pant - Men's
May 6, 2009
I have gone hiking with these pants in up to about 75 degrees and have been comfortable--the nylon is light and breathes well. I bought this pants with the same intention of using them for hiking/backpacking in the summertime, and so far so good.

Arc'teryx Agent Comp Pant - Men's
May 4, 2009
They are made of a thick nylon type of material, and seem more built for durability and wear resistance than lightness or small pack size. It will be more comfortable in the summer than jeans, but obviously not as breezy as shorts. If lighter pants are what you are looking for, I would recommend the Arc'teryx Rampart Pants over these.
