Stoic Merino Crew Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Stoic Merino Crew Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 11, 2009

I am 6'6" with a 48" chest and I went with an XXL--I am glad that I did. It has a nice athletic fit, without being skin tight which is what I wanted. The body is a great length, and the arms are even long on me (which I like)!

If you are familiar with the Backcountry.com long-sleeve merino crew shirts, you will be happy to know that the thumb-holes are usable, and in the correct spot.

Finally, the weight. I would estimate the weight to be about 120g/m2 (maybe 140g/m2 at the most). It feels about the same weight as the Backcountry.com short-sleeve merino shirts or a SmartWool microweight. The merino soft, and of good quality.

SmartWool Microweight Crew Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

September 8, 2009

I have not had a problem with shrinkage in any of my merino gear (Icebreaker, Smartwool, and Backcountry brands). I wash my merino in cold water and lay flat to dry. I also use Sport Wash, but I am sure that anything that rinses clean would work also.

Outdoor Research Sequence Zip T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 27, 2009

I was a little doubtful at first at what good 12% merino would do for a polyester shirt. It is not a night-and-day difference, but the shirt is super soft and comfortable yet still wicks awesomely.

I liked the shirt so much, I got two of them when they were on sale.

Awesome Sweater!

Arc'teryx Covert Cardigan - Men's

Arc'teryx Covert Cardigan - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 25, 2009

I do not underestand why some of the reviewers are calling this a jacket...

Basically this is an extremely nice zip-up fleece. The Polartec material is fleeced on the inside, yet it is knit and look like a sweater on the outside. This is not a super technical piece, but it should layer well. It has the cut, sizing, and styling of other Arc'teryx pieces.

I do like the sweater, but I do not know who in their right mind would pay the MSRP! Definately buy it on sale.

Rating for this product: 5 August 18, 2009

I have this hat in the 'Blackbird' color and I love it. It is warm and breathes well. It also fits my head well, and does not have any of that extra material bulging-up in weird spots. As other reviewers pointed out, it covers the back of my head behind the ears, too.

I won't lie--the big bird logo definitely shows the love!

Icebreaker SuperFine 200 Tech T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 28, 2009

I am a big fan of this shirt and the Hopper because they have all the benefits of merino wool, but with an athletic t-shirt fit (not too tight, but not baggy t-shirt either).

The quality of the shirt and the merino fabric itself is all top-notch, and the 'devil' color is an awesome orange-red.

If only these shirts were cheaper--then I would not have to own any cotton or poly shirts!

Backcountry.com Stoic 2.0 Shell - Men's

July 21, 2009

I agree with wan2787354. I think that it works wonderfully as a shell for 4-seasons use. It is completely waterproof for use as a rain jacket, and if one wears insulating layers underneath it works during colder pursuits as well.

That said, it is still a jacket. You will be a bit warm if you are really pushing yourself during an 85 degree summer rain.

Decent shirt for a quick workout

Backcountry.com Cocona Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Women's

Backcountry.com Cocona Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 July 21, 2009

This is a decent shirt if you are looking for a quick-wicking polyester shirt at a good price (when on sale). I do not really buy into the 'odor-negating' properies, as it seems to perform like a normal poly shirt. It works if you are going for a run around your neighborhood or a workout at the gym. I would not recommend it for a multi-day backpacking/outdoor trip.

Backcountry.com Merino Crew Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Women's

Backcountry.com Merino Crew Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 July 21, 2009

This shirt looks great (raspberry color), and performs great, too. It is a bit thin as others have stated, but 'see-throughness' was not really a problem with the raspberry color.

Because the material is thin, it works well in warm weather, but is is not the most durable. It is worth it if you like the colors, but make sure that you get it on sale as I would not pay full price.

Mountain Hardwear Enterprise Backpack - 1900cu in

June 30, 2009

Yes, it is water resistant like a nylon-based backpack would be. There are also flaps that go over the zippers that help to resist water leaks, too. I have had no problems with water getting in the bag after being in the rain for a short time.

It would be good enough to walk from the parking lot into work, but you may want to do a water-proofing treatment or a packcover if you are looking to bike 5 miles into work in the pouring rain.

Cute

Backcountry.com Merino Hooded Shirt - Sleeveless - Women's

Backcountry.com Merino Hooded Shirt - Sleeveless - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 June 12, 2009

As the other reviews stated, it is see-through. One can see whatever you are wearing underneath it, and even the tag along the side. However, that has not been a problem since my wife wears it over a long sleeve shirt as a sort of light-weight hooded vest. Used in that fashion, it keeps her warm when there is a slight chill without having to put on a heavier layer.

The lilac color is a pinkish color with a hint of purple.

I would estimate that the weight of the fabric (based on other Backcountry, Smartwool, and Icebreaker merino products that we have) is between 120 and 140.

Backcountry.com Stoic 2.0 Shell - Men's

June 5, 2009

While I am not similiar to your size, I believe that going with what the last two sentences' recommendation is the way to go. Since you are looking to use a midlayer, I would go one size up from your usual. I have a 46" chest, and I went with the XXL so I could use my Siphon Wool as a midlayer.

The Bombshell compares to Gore-Tex Pro, so it will not breathe as much as your present eVent jacket. But, as you were thinking, it will also stand up to more abuse.

Backcountry.com Stoic 2.0 Shell - Men's

May 28, 2009

I will answer my own question as it may help others thinking about a purchase...

My old rain jacket, a fifty dollar Columbia variety, packed up to the size of a Chunky Soup can (it is a size XXL). The Stoic 2.0 packs up to the size of a family-size can of SpaghettiOs (also size XXL), and when rolled-up fits nicely in its hood. Sorry about the canned food references, but that was the first thing that I thought of when trying to explain the relative sizes.

I just recently received my Stoic 2.0, so I have not had a chance to put it to the test in the field. However, my first impression is that this jacket is much, much better than my previous shell. I am actually glad that purchased this jacket versus some of the other brands of shells that I was looking at that cost more than double. The Bombshell fabric is no joke, and I am looking forward to wearing this up against Nature's worst!

Icebreaker SuperFine150 Anaconda V Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

May 28, 2009

This does not fit like a regular t-shirt. This Icebreaker will fit like an athletic cut or workout shirt.

Pay attention to the size chart in regards to the chest. In most tops, 46 inch is an XL, but in this shirt it is an XXL.

If you are looking for more of a normal fit t-shirt, take a look at the Hopper. That still has an athletic cut, but it is a bit more relaxed. The Backcountry merino t-shirt is nice, too, but I think that is more of a 120 weight.

Interesting Shirt

Arc'teryx Envoy Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Arc'teryx Envoy Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 27, 2009

I was looking for a shirt that would be able to function in town (or the office) and in turn could be utilized for light trail duty. The Envoy is up to that task, and it also makes a good travel shirt.

A note on the Invigor fabric... The label says it is 100% polyester, but it feels stretchy like it has lycra in it and it has a nylon-like feel to it. This is not really a con, but I wanted to let others know what the fabric is like since I could not find too many details on it when I was looking at the shirt.

Backcountry.com Siphon Wool Hooded Jacket - Men's

May 18, 2009

It may make it more water resistant, but it is never going to work that great no matter what you use. The problem is the fabric--the fuzziness of the outside will trap water and prevent it from rolling right off. No spay-on or wash-in product is going to prevent you from getting wet if caught in severe for extended times in this jacket. However, it was never meant to be that type of jacket, so you will have to take a look at what your needs are.

Soft shell shorts?

Cloudveil Inertia Peak Short - Men's

Cloudveil Inertia Peak Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 16, 2009

I was curious what the material would be like, and so far I am not disappointed. It is not like the fleeced-back soft shell of, say, a North Face Bionic jacket. The material is like ski pants made out of fabric by Schoeller.

These shorts are perfect for hiking and climbing, and I will probably use them mountain biking, too. They have a rugged build, yet flex well. The zippered front pockets will make sure that nothing hops out of your pockets no matter what you are doing.

Backcountry.com Merino Crew Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 11, 2009

For activities in warm weather, this shirt is going to be hard to beat. The shirt is lightweight (lighter than my Icebreaker 190), and breathes and wicks as one would expect merino clothes to do.

The merino wool is soft, and get softer with each washing. The quality is just as nice as the Icebreaker and Smartwool tops that are in my house.

Overall, great buy if you are looking to get a lightweight shirt.

Rugged Pants

Arc'teryx Agent Comp Pant - Men's

Arc'teryx Agent Comp Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 6, 2009

When the description says they are reenforced in the front, they certainly mean it. There is a whole additional layer of tough nylon across your knees and thighs that makes me think that these pants can stand up to a lot of abuse. The nylon dries pretty quickly, too.

Even though the nylon is thicker than other pants I own (such as the Arcteryx Rampart), the pants are still comfortable and breathable over the miles.

These are the pants to own if you are looking to do some off-trail hiking and/or rock climbing.

Mountain Hardwear Enterprise Backpack - 1900cu in

Mountain Hardwear Enterprise Backpack - 1900cu in

Rating for this product: 5 May 6, 2009

I have the Dark Adobe color and I love it. I was looking for a laptop bag that would be able to handle the daily back and forth to work as well as being a good carry-on bag when I travel. This backpack exceeded my expectations! There are plenty of pockets and places to store things, and padded, strapped laptop pocket fit my 14.1 inch laptop easily.

I wish I would have had this backpack when I was in school, because it would have been perfect for hauling my stuff around campus. So, if you are looking for a laptop backpack for school, I would give this one some consideration.

Also, if needed, this would make a decent hiking daypack if one did not already have one for just that purpose. I would not recommend it solely for that purpose, but if one wanted to get a little dual-use out of the bag, I feel that it would be up to the task.

Great soft shell gloves

The North Face Apex Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 6, 2009

I like these gloves. They are form-fitting to allow great movement, yet they block a surprising amount of cold and wind. I have used them for things such as winter hiking and driving gloves, and am most pleased with their performance.

Of note, the synthetic grippers on the palms are little silicone North Face logos. They do their job and do give you good grip, but they are not going to offer the palm much, if any scuff protection. The soft shell material seems pretty tough, and I have had no issues, but I did think that it was worth mentioning.

Great all around long sleeve shirt

The North Face Impulse 1/4-Zip Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

The North Face Impulse 1/4-Zip Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 5, 2009

I'll admit it--I am not winter runner like most of the other reviewers for this shirt. Although it seems that is the shirt's intended function (being part of the Flight Series and all), it does perform wonderfully as synthetic long sleeve shirt. Most of the time I wear it as light midlayer while hiking. The fit is not too tight as to prevent one from wearing a base under it.

As a tall person (6'5"), I appreciate the long sleeves, and can comfortably use the thumb holes.

Lightweight Fleece that thinks it is a Midweight

Arc'teryx Delta LT Zip Pullover - Men's

Arc'teryx Delta LT Zip Pullover - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 5, 2009

I usually where this as a midlayer. Honestly, when i first got it, I felt a bit ripped-off because it was light and thin. To my surprise, it is much, much warmer than it looks. I guess that is a thumbs-up to Polartec for the great fabric, and a high-five to Arc'teryx for making a midlayer that is technical for outside adventures, yet stylish enough for casual Fridays at work.

Remember that first synthetic shirt you bought?

Icebreaker SuperFine 200 Hopper T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Icebreaker SuperFine 200 Hopper T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 5, 2009

Most people when they first start looking a Icebreaker gear cringe at how expensive it is. When you bought that first synthetic shirt, I am sure that you were wondering then exactly how much better could it be than the cotton shirts you had been wearing. Merino wool is next step up, and Icebreaker is top-of-the-line. Yes, it is worth the price, and once you buy one piece of merino gear you will soon find out that it will not be your last!

This is my favorite t-shirt, period. It is softer than your favorite cotton shirt, yet wicks better than your favorite synthetic. Better still, it will not stink like either of them when you get back to camp.

People that are fans of Icebreaker were probably nodding their heads and smiling while they read this review. Do yourself a favor and find out what we are smiling about. :)

There is a reason that these are rated so highly

The North Face Hedgehog GTX XCR Shoe - Men's

The North Face Hedgehog GTX XCR Shoe - Men's

These, quite honestly, are the best hiking shoes I have ever owned! They perform on the trail, yet do not look 'geared-out' when you wear them to go shopping. Water has never been a problem thanks to the Gore-Tex, and the aggressive Vibram soles grip the trail with ease.

These shoes are definitely worth putting on your short list.

Almost Perfect

Backcountry.com Merino Crew Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Backcountry.com Merino Crew Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 4, 2009

Yes, as other reviews have stated, the thumb holes are lacking. They are too small, and the one on the left arm is not where it should be without twisting the sleeve a bit.

Even though it has these flaws, it is still one of my favorite shirts. The merino wool is of high quality, and performs just like the more expensive names.

The cut is athletic, but it is stylish enough not to totally look like you are wearing a baselayer top when you wear it by itself. It is awesome to wear while lounging in the winter, but it really shines as a baselayer under a softshell or by itself while hiking around 65F.

Arc'teryx Agent Comp Pant - Men's

May 4, 2009

They are made of a thick nylon type of material, and seem more built for durability and wear resistance than lightness or small pack size. It will be more comfortable in the summer than jeans, but obviously not as breezy as shorts. If lighter pants are what you are looking for, I would recommend the Arc'teryx Rampart Pants over these.

Love this hat

Arc'teryx Embroidered Bird Baseball Hat

Arc'teryx Embroidered Bird Baseball Hat

Rating for this product: 5 May 4, 2009

I was looking for a baseball-style hat to wear while hiking, camping, etc. I found exactly what I was looking for with this hat. I like the dark-green Caper color, too.

The FlexFit system works great, and gives a fitted hat look. It has an elastic waistband looking thing that goes all the way around the hat that fits snug, but not too tight as to be uncomfortable.

Awesome Lightweight Pants!

Arc'teryx Rampart Pant - Men's

Arc'teryx Rampart Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 4, 2009

I was so happy to find pants like this with an inseam for tall people!

While they are a bit expensive, Arc'teryx does not disappoint. I found these pants perfect for hiking in warm weather. They breathe well and dry very quickly after they get wet. I liked the numerous non-bulky pockets, too.

The only negative that I could find is that there is a bit of that nylon 'whoosh whoosh' when you walk around. In my opinion, it was not worth deducting a star because it was minor and to be expected as they are made almost entirely of nylon.
