Stomping Grounds:
OR & WA Cascades, occasionally the Olympics -
Bio:
Grew up boating, fishing, visiting some wild places but never exerting too much physical effort. All that changed when I dropped my better half off at Springer in 07 and drove home to a cubicle at a financial printing company and a 6 month wait for her return, thinking I didn't want to backpack for "that long". Needless to say I was by her side within 2 months and we hiked onward for 5 more taking our sweet time (who wants to come home to mom's basement when you can leisurely hike the NorthEast through the end of September?).
Since then we moved from Michigan out to Oregon and I have gotten into a whole lot more than backpacking, though that is still a first love. But right now climbing and alpinism is what gets me out of bed (or keeps me out for those alpine starts).
cheers

MSR Reactor Stove

here is the Reactor doing its thing at 7400ft/25 degrees on the flanks of North Sister in Oregon. Love this stove! The vapor in the picture is from the water that this little furnace just brought to a raging boil.

bad design--loose threads
Icebreaker SuperFine150 Inca Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's
April 14, 2010
washed once, according to directions. hem has rolled up like a cut tshirt and has a couple of loose threads. why bother with the fake hem? its a dumb design, imho, going for fashion instead of functionality. not everyone who wears icebreaker is a hipster riding a fixed-gear.

This is a great piece for spring-summer-fall, so long as there is no precipitation! It blocks the wind great, transfers body moisture excellently, dries quickly, weighs nothing, and packs/stuffs small!

Stoic Overhang Pant - Men's
November 24, 2010
they won't keep you warm nor dry after 12 hours. You need waterproof and probably a good synthetic insulation. It also depends on how stationary you are. Additionally if it is -1 to -25 out, are you working with water being pumped up or down otherwise it would seem it is all frozen, thus--you may not even need waterproof pants but wear some thermals (light-medium-or heavy weight) under a solid windproof/softshell pant with or without insulation depending on how heavy of a fleece/thermal long underwear you got.
Additionally if you are not just standing around but actually working heavy duty and liable to have your clothes get beat up with tons of dirt, rock, sharp corners of metal, etc., don't even bother forking up $300 for some primo pants--if you are doing that kind of work it will probably tear them up quick, just get some good long underwear and something for ~$100 to last you a few months. you don't want to be worrying about some expensive super pants getting holes and rips when you gotta be working.
cheers

Kahtoola MICROspikes Traction System
April 28, 2010
To correct Evan Stevens, Microspikes are made from rubber for the upper part and stainless steel, NOT aluminum. Thus, they hold up pretty well on rocks--but I wouldn't wear them continually on rock, it will wear them out a lot quicker than wearing them on ice or compacted snow.

Stoic Overhang Pant - Men's
March 30, 2010
Not the same pant
First of all I must say the Backcountry.com Overhang pant is AWESOME. The only downfall has been the micro-fleece lining has pilled off in high friction areas.
Thus after much waiting and hoping that another run of the overhang would come out, stoic released theirs. I grabbed the first pair I could buy, and while I have not tested them outside, I assume they will perform at a similar level as the bc.com overhang. That said, I would like to detail the differences for anyone who may be wondering:
Size Medium:
stoic overhang: Everest Softshell (just an inhouse name of powershield?), no micro-fleece, 94% nylon, 6% spandex, 7 belt loops, zipper pulls are tied cord, 18.8oz. Thicker, Heavier, Less Stretch.
bc.com overhang: polartec powershield with hardface technology, micro-fleece lining, 92% nylon, 8% spandex, 5 belt loops, zipper pulls are sewed loops of webbing, 14.2oz. Thinner, Softer, Stretchier.
Fit is otherwise the same. I'm ~32x32inch sizing in jeans, khakis, dress pants. M fits perfect at waist w/ both buttons snapped. w/ both buttons snapped, S would seem tight.

Backcountry.com Rime Pullover Jacket - Men's
March 8, 2010
I'm 5'8" 145-150lbs, 32in waist 38inch chest, small is a pain in the butt to get on and harder still to get off, but once on it fits perfectly. Only enough room to put a tshirt on under it though -- but I'm not sure what I'd want to put under it if I had a size larger.

Stoic Merino Crew - Short-Sleeve - Men's
March 8, 2010
Used the stoic merino crew short sleeve this weekend and have to say it is nearly the same cut. I held it against a tried and true bc.com merino i have and it seems to be about an inch longer in the back, which I think is a fine variation. I also compared it to the bc.com wall tshirt (http://www.backcountry.com/outdoorgear/Backcountry-Merino-W

Stoic Merino Crew - Short-Sleeve - Men's
March 3, 2010
I'm going to find out..just got one on SAC. You know the bc.com ones and the stoic ones have a lifetime warranty from the manufacturer (BC/stoic)..why not chat them up if you really feel they went fast. They are thin but mine have held up well so far -- did they wear thin where pack-straps are or what?

Stoic Merino Crew - Short-Sleeve - Men's
March 3, 2010
probably not. stoic seems like it's going for 'the stupid-crazy 80's look' in most of their gear but forgot that even when those trends re-appear, they are just that, trends. You could see a little of this bizzaro seep out in Backcountry brand pieces ('carrot, aqua, etc' on pullovers/shift), its like they let those designers have free reign when it came to the stoic line.
I'd agree with you--the bc ones were solid and plain. these with stitching look more like some sugoi bike shirt

January 22, 2010
Dear Matt,
Thank you for supporting Polartec(r) by wishing to purchase products using our fabric!
These pants are made from Polartec(r) Power Shield(r) and the term stretch woven means that they have great stretch for a high range of movement, as you would need while climbing or hiking. We have developed some styles of Power Shield that provide the same great abrasion resistance and weather protection, but allow much more stretch and movement. The stretch woven Power Shield fabric is a little lighter in weight than some other Power Sheild fabrics, however for this reason the fabric is perfect for garment such as these pants.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Best Regards,
John

Backcountry.com Overhang Pant - Men's
December 17, 2009
the knee got some tiny holes from kneeing in mine on some rough ground quite a bit. Also the inside 'fleece' or fur or brushed whatever has almost totally disappeared from mine in wear spots (knees, thigh and back of thigh, part of butt). Each time when I'm finished wearing these I end up with a lot of 'lint' in a place that aint so pleasant.
i still love the pants though. if BC.com had them in stock in my size I'd send these in for a replacement though as I think the inside brushing shouldn't slough off so easily.
I wear them for mountaineering too, just with long underwear underneath.

I have a pair of Mediums and am trying to get them to fit on a size 9 lowa mountain expert and they are only snug when I have the buckle tightened so much that its near the edge of the sole and the hook is going over the very first (near the toe) cross of laces. I think I will be returning them for a size small.
