I would suggest going for a jacket with Gore-Tex. The Venture is a decent jacket for a little bit of rain, but its not very good for downpours and its pretty darn thin to be a winter/snow jacket. i would suggest getting something a bit heavier that will be a bit warmer for the winter. I would suggest to get the Mountain Hardwear Xenon shell. its still pretty light weight at 19oz, and it will give you the desired weather protection.

Since this material is highly water resistant, not waterproof, the DWR on the cuffs will wear off quickly in this area because of wear and tear. To fix this, i would suggest that you get some Nixwax Spray-On DWR and apply it to the cuff areas of this jacket. By doing this, you will have some extra protection and hopefully it will stop the water from penetrating the jacket.

this jacket will be nice and light for runs but it may not be enough water protection. it only has 5k waterproofing and 5k breathability, so that wont do much to keep you dry and it wont breath that well either. i would get something that has more protection and a higher breathability rating to let the heat escape easier.

When considering these two jacket, i would take into consideration your planned use. This jacket will be better for skiing with is powder skirt, so if you are going to solely use this jacket for skiing, i would get this one. The Theta AR isnt a bad skiing jacket, but powder gets in way easier, even if you tighten the bottom hem. But if you are looking for a solid all around jacket, from skiing to hiking, etc, i would get the Theta AR.

There are products you can use to wash and revive the DWR coating on this jacket. I use Nixwax Tech Wash to clean the jacket and then Nixwax wash-in DWR after. There are also spray-on DWR products. Also, Grangers makes good wash/DWR products as well. Type "Nixwax" into the search bar at the top and you can get a list of those products.

i feel that this jacket may be a bit too much for trail running considering it is cut more for skiing/other outdoor activities, but i suppose if you got a smaller size it would work pretty well. 14oz is pretty light weight for a technical shell so that is a positive. One recommendation would be the Arc'teryx Alpha SL pullover. 11oz, Anorak that can be zipped freely to vent and it packs into its own kangaroo pocket.

The newer model with the Pro Shell has Micro Grid Backer, which supposedly increases the breathability and internal abrasion resistance. I have the last version made with XCR and i think its an amazing jacket. I used it for everything: snowboarding, skiing, hiking, biking, campus use, etc. And for some reason the description above says "Arc'teryx added Underarm zips for ventilation in mellow conditions, so you don't overheat while breaking trail in two feet of new snow", but my older model has Pit Zips that are huge, so i dont know why thats there. Personally, i would save the money and go with the older version, but if you want increase breathability go with the new version.

I would think it would be ok for that temperature range. Here in colorado, my brother wears this jacket and a long sleeve shirt on 20 degree days so it think you would be good espeically if u were riding a bike. the windstopper is great for bike riding. the only thing that worries me is the weight. it might be a bit much.

Right now its not on sale, but it could possibly go on sale by the end of the semi-annual sale. i guess we will just have to wait and see. also, the Arcteryx Spring 2009 line should be officially coming out soon, so when that does, a lot of the Fall 2008 jackets will go to the outlet, so watch out for that.

It depends what you are looking for? Do you want a softshell or a fleece jacket? TNF Pamir is a windstopper fleece while the MH Alchemy is a softshell. Both would be decent for layering under a technical shell, but the Alchemy would be better on its own for skiing and snowboarding.

The Atlas is fairly lightweight for a Gore-Tex Performance Shell jacket but im sure it works just fine for skiing. It doesnt have a powder skirt, which is a downside, but the hood will fit over a helmet. it has pit zips for those hot hikes and such.

The Denali is a thermal jacket so its meant to keep you warm, but the wind rips right through it. The Pamir jacket has Windstopper so no wind will get through, and it will also be a warm jacket. I would recommend the Pamir over the Denali.

Since youre not going to be outside and in the wind a lot, i would suggest saving a bit of money by getting the windwall 2 fleece. It is still wind resistant and it will keep you warm. I think Windstopper is just unnecessary in your case. Also, i think you should just stick with a small, especially since this jacket can be used as a mid layer on really cold days, so getting a small would make layering easier. But since the Pamir is on sale for cheaper than the windwall right now (02/16/09), i would get this, just because it is a nicer product.

This is a fleece jacket (like the WIndwall 2) with some abrasion resistance patches in the high wear areas. The difference between the two is the Windstopper. This jacket has Gore Windstopper, which is completely windproof, while the Windwall 2 has wind resistant technology. Windstopper>Windwall

This jacket basically just replaced the Sigma SV. I own the Sigma SV and have compared it in store to the Venta SV and they are very similar indeed. The Venta is 30 grams lighter, thats it. So if you can get a Sigma SV for a cheaper price, i would recommend getting that. It is a great product.

in this case i think it depends on what type of material and some features you are looking for. The Sidewinder AR obviously has a stowable hood, while the Stingray has a fixed hood. As for material, the Sidewinder AR is a 3-layer Pro Shell hardshell, while the Stingray is made up of Gore-Tex softshell material.

Im not sure about the length compared to the Sidewinder AR but i do know that the Alpha SV is longer in the back. This jacket has the "Drop Back Hem" which obviously dropped further down than the front of the jacket. its a pretty sweet addition in my opinion.

This is high-end. It doesn't get much better. This isn't exactly the "snowboarder" style, but it will function very well. Be careful though, this is a shell, not much for insulation. You will need under layers. Also, no powder skirt.I have an older model of this jacket that i used for all of my days snowboarding last season. Like mike said, its not "snowboarder" steezy style at all, but its great for keeping weather out no matter what. To layer, i wear a soft shell underneath and then some other things, so thats what i would recommend to you. it does have a waist adjustment that you could toy with into a make-shift powder skirt if need be, but ive never had the problem of powder going up this jacket.

Well it depends on what your looking for when it comes to weight and protection levels. The Epsilon SV is on a bonded poly fabric and is only 16 oz. so its a lighter weight jacket. And no Gore-Tex or Windstopper. But it is highly breathable and will shed light rain and is wind resistant, but not proof. The Gamma MX hoody is a Polartec Powershield softshell which is good for many different types of weather conditions, hints the MX (mixed) rating it gets, but it too is lighter than Sigma SV at 20 oz. Now the Sigma SV is 24 oz. and has Windstopper, which is very breathable. I think it has the most durable fabric and has the great, large Drop Hood. So really its all your preference. But i would say go with the Sigma over the Gamma. As for the two letter endings, they go as follows: SV= severe (weather), AR= All Around, LT= Light, SL= Superlight, MX= Mixed, SK= Skiing, Comp= mixture of hard (gore-tex) and soft shell and i think thats most of them.
