warm, thick, could droop a bit more

Coal Frena Solid Beanie

Coal Frena Solid Beanie

Rating for this product: 3 January 17, 2012

This beanie keeps my head and ears really warm but when going for that droop look it could be a bit thinner and longer. It seems to stick off the back of my head like a cone instead of slouching a bit more. Regardless of the fashion aspect it is extremely functional out on the slopes or in town.

Great and affordable

Spy Trevor Goggle

Spy Trevor Goggle

Rating for this product: 4 January 17, 2012

Tried these goggles out in Vail a few weeks ago and they were outstanding. The vision was perfect in the sun, they fit my face well, and had no problem attaching to my helmet. This is my first pair of goggles that I've owned and I did a lot of looking around but am extremely happy with my choice.

When the water belt won't cut it

Nathan HPL #020 Race Vest

Nathan HPL #020 Race Vest

Rating for this product: 4 January 17, 2012

This pack is outstanding for a long run when lots of water is needed. The 2L bladder provides plenty of water and the slide top design is very easy to fill and to dry out afterwards. The pack keeps the bladder from bouncing around. Sometimes the pack pulls my shirt up in the back but as soon as I sweat a bit it the shirt stays in place. The pockets on the front are very convenient for some snacks or chapstick with room to spare. The clasp across your chest is easily adjustable but I find it could use two straps - one higher and one lower on my chest to really keep it all in place. It is a minor concern though. I have not had any rubbing at all from the pack and have taken it on several runs of 20+ miles. Overall a great water pack when my water belt just isn't enough.

Great for hiking

Salomon XA Comp 4 GTX Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Salomon XA Comp 4 GTX Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 17, 2012

I bought these shoes with the intention of doing some winter trail running but regardless of which socks I wear I always end up with a blister on the inside of the ball of my foot. I have never had wide feet before but these might be too narrow for my feet for running. For hiking, however, they are outstanding. Pair the goretex with a good pair of light wool socks and you are ready for all conditions. I have even snowshoed in these and my feet were toasty warm. Highly recommended but check your foot width for trail running.

Awful

Oakley Light Winter Gloves

Oakley Light Winter Gloves

Rating for this product: 1 January 17, 2012

These are the worst gloves ever. They are not warm and they will be soaking wet after just a couple ours out in the snow. I always bring these because they are the only pair I have but I always end up borrowing an old pair from a friend before it comes time to hit the slopes because these are so bad. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.

Decent pants but you can do better

The North Face Freedom Pant - Men's

The North Face Freedom Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 January 17, 2012

I got these on clearance a few years ago and while the construction is solid and they do the job they are too long. The bottoms just hang on me while the waist fits great. I am 5'11" 160lb. The pockets are easy to access and there is enough room to store my wallet, phone, an energy bar, chapstick with room to spare. The adjustable waist is helpful depending on how layered I am on that particular day. All in all these pants are decent for the money but there are much better pants out there if you are willing to spend just a bit more.
