  • Bio:

I am a gravity nut. If it involves a mountain and some piece of equipment that allows me to go faster, I'm game. My primary love is big mountain skiing. I am active in alpine skiing, telemark, and AT. When the snow isn't falling I trade my skis for bikes. Motor and pedal. I love to downhill and freeride, but a good solid road or XC ride is always enjoyable. I pepper in some climbing, water skiing, wakeboarding, running, Crossfit, hockey, golf, swimming, and whatever else gets me out. But it all comes back to skiing.

I spent many years selling all types of gear, hardgoods and soft. through those years I learned a great deal about the technical construction of equipment and clothing. I have used a wide variety of gear over time and had a wide spectrum of experiences. I am hoping to pass that knowledge to anyone who needs it.

Rossignol S7 Barras Ski

October 29, 2009

I picked up a set of the S7's last year and I love them. I am 5'5" and 150 lbs. I demo'd the skis at Alyeska, Alaska in a 188 and they were great. They ski very short and I found that the 188 was perfect for high speed and stability for me. Where I felt the length was a problem was in the tight trees, at that point they were a little tougher for me to maneuver. In the end I bought the 176 because I ski a lot of trees, but if I was any taller/heavier I would have gone 188. The down side to the 176 is that I have sacrificed the high speed stability.

What you need to decide is what is most important; maneuverability in tight quarters or (very) high speed stability.

I hope that helps.

Broke two of 'em

Swix Edger Compact

Swix Edger Compact

Rating for this product: 2 September 19, 2009

Works great when it works, but I broke two of these under normal use. As others have said, the tension adjuster failed. I have gone back to a simpler tool.

Rossignol S7 Caballero Alpine Ski

March 3, 2009

Skinning up with S7's?I was going to mount up a pair of Baron's on these and use it for slackcountry/light backcountry. With the rockered tail, is this a bad idea? Is anyone skinning on these?

Rossignol S7 Caballero Alpine Ski

March 2, 2009

I called Rossignol today and according to "Nick" you should locate the centerline of your boot 80.4 cm from the tail of the ski on the 176 cm ski. Measure a straight line from the ski tail without letting your tape follow the contour of the ski. He had a different number which I don't remember for the 188cm long ski. He said don't pay attention to the markings on the ski as they may be in error.I skied a set this weekend and they were 188's mounted at +3 cm. I had a blast on them. I heard the pro's are mounting these at +3 cm as well.

Rossignol S7 Caballero Alpine Ski

March 2, 2009

I just demoed a set of these in 6" of fresh snow. first off I am 5'5" and 150 lbs and I am a fairly aggressive skier. I took out the 188 cm S7's. When I picked them up, I thought "holy crap, these are huge" Once I got them on my feet they felt a lot shorter. As I started riding them I was so impressed with the maneuverability and feel, I almost forgot I was on 188's. I skied a variety of terrain on them too. I was at Alyeska Resort in AK, so for the first half of the day I skied the north face, wide open slightly steeper pitch (maybe 35-40 deg??) with 6" of fresh. The S7's did whatever i wanted. If I wanted to open them up and make big turns, they did it. Slashing the tails out, no problem. Tight turns in a bumped out chute? bring it on. Even cruising back to the lift on a crude covered groomer I was leaving trenches. The only place I felt the extra length was when I was in the tight trees. I found throwing them around between trees to be a little more work than I wanted. So all that being said, I ordered a pair of 176 cm S7's. Why? I felt that they will still hold the speed I want but the shorter length will be way more fun in the trees, and I love skiing the trees.

They aren't lying about the loose fit

Oakley Mystic Jacket - Men's

Oakley Mystic Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 March 2, 2009

I bought the Mystic Jacket and pants both in a size small. I received them the other day in the mail. Right out of the box I was impressed with the style, color (shadow), and build quality. What really impressed me, and mainly the reason for buying the suit, was the ability to zip the snow skirt of the jacket to the pants and create a one piece suit. The systems works beautifully. However, I am sending both pieces back today. The main problem for me was the fit. I am 5'6" 150 lbs and I ordered a size small in both pieces. I anticipated a "loose" fit, but this was way to loose for me. I like the way the suit looks, I think its fantastic. However, on someone on the shorter side of life, it made me look like a 12 yr old borrowing his dads outfit. More than that, I found that due to the ill fit my motion was restricted by bunching and movement of the suit. Overall, great style and quality and it looks like it will keep the weather out, it just wasn't the proper fit for me.

I am a size 30. I have the Oakley Brigade pant in a small and it fits perfectly, but I think Oakley labels those as "regular" fit.

Oakley Mystic Pant - Men's

February 27, 2009

Probably a medium would fit you quite well, seeing as it's about a 32inch waist, maybe a little loose. Most people like Oakley to be baggy though. Hope that helps you.- I would have to say small, being 5'5"-5'6" and 150 lbs (30 in waist)and the small was loose on me.

Oakley Mystic Pant - Men's

Depends on your waist size. If you have less than a 32, go for the small. Even then it may be loose (belt required)

The Original

Arc'teryx Gamma SV Hooded Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Gamma SV Hooded Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 15, 2008

I bought a Gamma SV 6 years ago when it was first released. Being the original softshell, it was ground breaking. I have taken the jacket through the forests of Northern British Columbia, Skiing in Colorado, hiking in Alaska, trekking in Thailand, and even a couple seasons of tree planting. I have worked this jacket harder than any other jacket I have ever owned. Finally, after 6 years of beatings, I had to replace the zipper. For the amount of abuse this jacket has taken, I can't give anything less than 5 stars. When I am packing for a trip, this is my go-to item.

Salomon Teneighty Ski

December 12, 2008

Fun. just plain Fun. depending on the length, these are very lively and responsive in the bumps. They have gotten a little wider over the years, which effects it a little bit. If you want a super fun, all mountain ski that turns the hill into a playground, I would recommend.

I kinda like it...a lot

Arc'teryx Scorpion Ski Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Scorpion Ski Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 12, 2008

I will be the first to admit I own a few too many Arcteryx Jackets, but this one is my current fav. Solid construction and great styling bring it all together. This jacket feels bomber. I am not worried when I am bombing through trees that a little branch will reach out and tear it up. The materials are solid and effective. All that being said, I was surprised by the weight. For something as robust as it is, it is not overly heavy. I find it a little long in the torso, but mainly because I am really, really short (5'5"). I would recommend this jacket for mainly resort skiing, if you are looking for something tele/BC/AT related, there are some lighter and more breathable shells out there. Overall, if you are lapping the back bowls and want a jacket that looks good and keeps you climate controlled while doing it, this is for you.

Nice for the right price

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hooded Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hooded Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 12, 2008

The retail price is a little steep, but when it came up on Steep and Cheap, I was on it. Great all around spring/fall jacket that will protect you from the elements. I own the 1st generation Gamma SV (literally bought it 1 month after its release) and 5 years later it is still going. I anticipate this to do the same. But with a hood. Oh, and a snazzy green color.

Minimalist

Arc'teryx Alpha SL Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Alpha SL Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 12, 2008

If you want an ultra light, high tech, top quality minimalist shell, this is it. mine has one pocket, and it is enough to stash your ID and keys, the rest is only what you need. This years has two pockets, a nice add i thought. I have taken it through West coast downpours and skied Colorado Backcountry in it. Gore-Tex Paclite shaves weight and keeps you nice and dry. and the styling is typical Arc'teryx, subtle but kick @$$. I have it in grey, and my bro has the Wasabi, I like his better.

My First Arcteryx

Arc'teryx Sidewinder SV Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Sidewinder SV Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 12, 2008

I bought a Sidewinder SV 6 years ago as my first descent jacket from Arcteryx. It has been fantastic. The durability is second to none. the materials have kept me warm and dry in some pretty awful situations and it keeps on ticking. the styling and materials have only gotten better with time. I would highly recommend it for anyone needing a very stylish, very technical resort skiing/light backcountry jacket. My only gripe, it is a little long in the body, but I think that has more to do with me being short than the jacket.
