Volkl Shiro Jr Ski - Kids'

Rating for this product: 5 December 20, 2011

These are real rockered skis and fat at 100mm under foot. My 8 year old really is enjoying these. A lot of kids/youth skis are the same beginner/intermediate platform with a different top-sheet. Volkl with the Gotamas and the Shiros seem to be taking kids more seriously... thank you!

Backcountry Access Float 36 Winter Backpack - 2197cu in

Rating for this product: 4 December 20, 2011

Nice pack, but beware it's far smaller in practice than 36L. I managed shovel, probe, puffy jacket, food, water, first aid kit, emergency tarp, PLB, sunglasses/goggles, spare gloves and either my jacket (during the up) or skins (during the down). There was little space if I needed to add a harness or crampons or other items. That said, for a day tour I found it super comfortable and definitely appreciate the insurance value.

My kid is nearly 7, and is tall for his age. Tried on some other 8 year old jackets and they fitted fine. This one was kinda long / baggy, but once he saw the jacket there was no persuading him to change it. So, summary is looks really cool for young boys (truck suspension in our case).

Seem to ski short

Volkl Gotama Jr. Ski - Kids'

Volkl Gotama Jr. Ski - Kids'

Rating for this product: 5 December 10, 2011

We've had two pairs of these in our family. Last year my 8 year old daughter skied on pair, and ended up over-powering them by the end of the season. They started head-height, but were eye height by end of the season. This year, bought a pair for my 6 year old son which are a few cm above his head. He's flying on them, with no problems carving turns. I guess the rocker means you can go a little longer than you with normal kids sizing. Makes sense, given that's similar guidance for adult rockered skis. Caveat is both kids are advanced skiers.

Assembly a nightmare

Kuat NV 2 Bike Rack

Rating for this product: 3 May 24, 2011

Now I've got this thing together it seems like a solid rack, but assembling it took hours. I combined it with the 2 bike add-on which is where most of the pain arose. The issues were:

1. Putting the first bolts through to attach the add-on were impossible due to poor quality finishing. The holes to push the bolts through were burred and the whole add-on assembly wouldn't slide in as a result. I filed the burrs, and got the add-on to slide in, but then couldn't get the bolts through. More filing and I got three out of four bolts in. The remaining one wouldn't go, and I had to loosen the bolts on the add-on section to get everything to fit, before retightening (not mention of this in the instructions).

2. Mounting the arms for the add-on section were also difficult. One bolt again didn't slide through. I couldn't get in to file this section to resorted to belting the bolt with a hammer while being careful not to damage any of the aluminum arms.

3. I attached the adapter for a 20" wheel and again difficult because the plastic housing was meant to hold the nut in place while you entered a bolt from the other side. Except that it didn't fit. In the process of tightening and trying to make it fit, the bolt sheared. Fortunately I needed only one 20" wheel adapter and I had two, so I had enough bolts.

4. This thing is HEAVY. Getting it out to the car took some sweat.

All that said, the rack is solid once on the car. It took all four bikes (2 adult / 2 kids) and stayed solid without shaking for a 220 mile drive. It's the most solid/secure bike rack I've ever had. I was impressed by how quickly and easily the bikes come on and off. The only criticism in use is that I cannot figure out how to lower the bikes to access the trunk when the bikes are on - think it's a two person job and requires someone else to support the weight while you pull the lever.

Experienced numerous 0F days this year and was delighted to have these in my alpine boots. My wife was concerned that she was wimping out by getting a pair, so I "helped" her out by doing likewise. They worked well, lasted all day, didn't bother me at all being strapped away on my ski boots. The cost on Backcountry.com was significantly lower than any prices I saw in resort.

Bern Carbon Fiber Baker EPS Visor Helmet w/Knit Liner

Rating for this product: 5 May 12, 2011

I find this helmet really comfortable. I worried about the lack of vents, but in reality found it to be fine. In terms of sizing, I originally ordered a L based on the size chart, but returned it and got a XL. I like the lack of vent switches and glued on pieces - it's a one piece helmet with cloth ear coverings - this means I can strap it into a helmet holder on my pack without bits breaking or getting caught.

Great gloves for variable conditions

Outdoor Research ExtraVert Glove - Men's

Outdoor Research ExtraVert Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 5, 2011

Took these for a four day yurt trip. First three days temperatures varied in the 20F - 30F range, and I only used these gloves for both the skinning up and the skiing down. The fourth day temperatures dropped to -1F and I combined these with some shell mittens over the top and they worked great. My hands get cold easily, so I was surprised how well these coped with a range of conditions and the wool inners feel really comfortable.

After a bunch of use all season, I finally found their limit after 2 hours bushwhacking in the rain when my hands got so wet they were cold (and shriveled). Switched for a dry pair of gloves, and am actually impressed it took all season and crappy conditions to get there...

Dynafit Stoke Ski

Dynafit Stoke Ski

Rating for this product: 5 February 5, 2011

First used these skis last weekend on a 4 day North Cascades yurt trip. The Stokes handled everything from crappy crust and variable snow for the first day, through some great powder skiing conditions as 27cm of new snow fell. I've got a pair of Manaslu's and while I like the light weight, they were always a compromise in tricky snow. The Stokes power better through all of this, and are still pretty light. In both cases I appreciate the Dynafit Speedskins - they attach well and are easy to transition to downhill without taking the skis off due to the tip rather than tail attchment. I'm 6' / 200lbs and found the 192cm Stokes a great length.

Stoic Bombshell Insulated Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 28, 2010

Wore this jacket skiing Whistler the last 4 days. Temperatures ranged from 15F to 25F. Jacket was warm with a base & mid layer - might even drop a layer next time. Pit zips were easy to use and all the pockets were useful - liked the inside pocket for my cell phone. I'm 6' and 200lbs - am L or XL in jackets depending on manufacturer - for the Stoic the XL sized really well for me. Look forward to seeing how waterproof it is - thankfully no rain and little to no wind yet.

Only nit pick is the extra $13 for a stuff sack. I used a BD skin bag which fitted the mat well.

This helmet is super light weight. It is also somewhat uncomfortable - padding is very thin and it had a strange fit. Also the system for attaching goggles is very poor - I found my Smith goggles would slide down the helmet, so it offered no real advantage over a regular climbing helmet.

Dynafit RC 20 Race Backpack - 1220cu in

Rating for this product: 4 April 21, 2010

Took this pack as a summit pack on an multi-day ski tour. Being light to carry in my larger backpack was a major consideration. It works great as a summit pack carrying a shovel, probe, puffy, skins and water. Not much room for anything more though. The bottle holder worked reasonably well, though I removed the bottle when descending to avoid it hitting me in the face. Was comfortable and adjusted well.

It does include a snow claw (plastic two handed shovel device) which may be useful as a frisbee, kid's sled or anything other than avalanche rescue.

Less of a compromise than expected

Dynafit Manaslu Ski

Dynafit Manaslu Ski

Rating for this product: 5 April 2, 2010

I bought these realizing they were really light and would be a compromise. The first time I skiied these I went from 4 days on my alpine powder setup (193cm 4frnt EHPs, Rossignol 15 din bindings and Lange Banshee Pro boots) and spent two days skiing the Manaslus with dynafit ST and Garmont Radiums. I thought it would be a tough comparison, but had a blast on this setup. Overall the Manaslu's rock - very good in powder, reasonable on softish groomed runs and bumps and overall great fun. They're great for skining and breaking trail in powder, and being light are comfortable to carry on bootpacks. On real icy hardpack conditions they do tend to chatter and slide at speed, but it's manageable and better than I expected for such light skis. I'm 6' and weigh 200lbs and had therefore been wary of such a light setup. I'm excited to get them out on multi-day ski traverses in the Cascades and BC, where I think they will excel. Just going to take it easy on real hardpack/icy conditions.

Garmont Radium Thermo AT Boot - Men's 2009

Rating for this product: 5 March 31, 2010

So far I've skied with these inbounds and I have to say they are a great flexing boot. I'm comparing them with the Garmont Axons and I think the Radiums ski much better in my opinion. The Axons may be slightly stiffer but the flex is weird. The Radiums flex more like my Lange downhill boots. As a result I felt much more comfortable in the steeps than I ever did with the Axons. Also really like the buckle system and the simple ski/walk mode (no multi-angles of lean).

La Sportiva Mythos Climbing Shoe - Men's Discontinued Rubber

Rating for this product: 4 December 10, 2009

Upgraded to these from the La Sportiva Cliff. They're a lot more sensitive and more sticky.

I read various places about sizing these down but still was nervous when I placed the order. My ski boots, mountaineering boots, cycling shoes, etc range from 43.5 to 44.5. My first pair of La Sportiva climbing shoes were slightly too big at 44.5. So I ordered the 42.5 and they really fit well! They hurt when I first put them on, and were tight in my first trip to the gym. But after 1 or 2 sessions they are really comfortable - they really do stretch!

Fischer Watea 101 Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 4 December 10, 2009

These are fat enough to float in powder, but also carve nicely at speed on the groomers. Able to handle powder, carved up crud and groomers.

Only mistake I made was putting Fritschi's on them and dragging them up Mt Baker - my skin track was wider than everyone else's so that was hard work!

Now they have alpine bindings on them they're a great everyday ski.

Cheap, doesn't leak and odor free

GSI Outdoors Flask - 18fl. oz.

GSI Outdoors Flask - 18fl. oz.

Rating for this product: 4 November 28, 2009

Like others said already it's surprisingly big, but that just gives you the option to part fill or completely fill to manage the weight. The size is no problem if it's in my pack. Certainly not a flask to carry in a pocket. It's cheap, doesn't leak and there is no odor from the plastic. From there the flask can be judged by the quality of what you put in it.

Burton Gore-Tex Mitten - Kids'

Rating for this product: 5 November 26, 2009

My 4 year old needed warm waterproof mittens. Many of the gloves for his size seem designed for "tots" rather than for a kid who wants to ski. These actually are pretty good - warm and apparently cool.

Rating for this product: 5 November 26, 2009

My 7 year old thinks these skis rock. They're wider than the equivalent size skis, but she is still able to carve turns on the groomers. Apparently they float better in powder too. Echoing the thoughts of a 7 year old, and of course the most important thing is they look cool.

Norrøna Narvik Gore-Tex/Primaloft Long Gloves

Norrøna Narvik Gore-Tex/Primaloft Long Gloves

Rating for this product: 5 November 23, 2009

Used these gloves for the first time on Sunday. It was a powder day with damp snow and a bitter wind. I was really impressed with how dry they stayed. I've had high end $150+ gloves before, and these are easily as good or better than those. Better than the Marmot gloves I had before, and matched my OR Super Couloir as my favorite gloves.

G3 Trim Tool

G3 Trim Tool

Rating for this product: 5 November 14, 2009

Almost idiot proof. I'd cut BD skins before and there was the effort to set the skin slightly offset each side to trim the right amount off. With the G3 tool you simply put the skins on the center of the ski and run it down the edges. It's set to cut the appropriate distance in to clear the edges.

Rating for this product: 5 August 21, 2009

Really like the tip attachment on my K2 Mt Bakers. Unlike the BD Ascensions, there is no way for the tip attachment to come unglued. Also they seem thinner / easier to pack than the BD's. Glide, climbing, etc seem all comparable.

Fitted our 7 year old and 4 year old just fine, with plenty of room for growth. They loved having their own water to drink while riding. They had no problems drinking from the camelbaks. Plenty of storage space for bits & pieces (they carried their teddy bears in the back). Recommended.

K2 Mt. Baker Superlight Alpine Touring Ski

June 3, 2009

The 181cm Mt Baker is longer than it sounds. I compared it with my old 188cm Dynastar Legends and it is about as long. I am 195lbs, like longer skis, and was perfectly happy with the 181cm. Did have to be persuaded in the shop by comparing ski lengths, and it is scary how different manufacturers measure their skis.

I was advised though to skip the superlights and go with the regular bakers. I use mine with dynafits and have been very happy.

K2 Mt. Baker Superlight Alpine Touring Ski

June 3, 2009

I am the same weight and around 6 feet tall. I bought the 181cm regular Mt Baker, after receiving advice from a bunch of different people that the super-light would be pretty soft giving my weight and power. I have been really happy with the regular Mt Baker for multi-day ski tours.

The 181cm Mt Baker is the same length as my old 188cm Dynastar Legend's, and also as long as my 193cm 4Frnt EHPs. K2 seem to have a different approach to measuring ski length.

Mountain Hardwear Dihedral Backpack - 2450-2600cu in

Mountain Hardwear Dihedral Backpack - 2450-2600cu in

Rating for this product: 4 June 2, 2009

I really like this pack for climbing. The compression straps can be clipped around the outside of the pack to hold crampons. The lid pockets are a great size. There are more small pockets than on similar packs (4).

I'm less of a fan of this pack for skiing though. The pocket underneath the white tarp though is a bit of a pain and I would have much preferred to see an externally accessed shovel pocket there, for easy access to skins, shovel and probe. The pack I use for skiing (Black Diamond Anarchist Avalung) has both a good shovel pocket and a side zip for quick access to the main pack.

Marmot Alpinist Tent: 2-Person 4-Season

I have the previous generation of this tent. Ventilation is ok in the winter/spring, but I normally leave the main door partially open to let air in from the vestibule. The vents in the top are small and there is only a door at one end. I think it would be extremely hot in the summer.

Black Diamond Fritschi Diamir Freeride Plus Binding

May 17, 2009

Either the Marker Baron or the Fritschi Freeride.

If you already have an alpine setup though which you can continue to use inbounds, and you think there is a good chance you'll get deeper into backcountry then definitely worth considering the Dynafit bindings. You'd be glad of it in the longer run, though a steeper initial learning curve.

Suunto Core Altimeter Watch

Suunto Core Altimeter Watch

Rating for this product: 4 May 9, 2009

Altimeter works well... alarm works... sunrise/sunset is a useful feature... tells the time. All pretty easy to use.

Other than that what I like is the strap is long enough to wrap around the outside of several layers, so you can wear it on cold days and easily tell the time/altitude.

Other people have commented on the watch - it's got a really large face and apparently looks cool.

Biggest downside is the face scratched easily. Battery life has been ok, though have had to replace once in the past year.

Pros and cons

Mountain Hardwear Phantom Down Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Phantom Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 May 8, 2009

Pros
- Lightweight
- Warm

Cons
- Fit - I am 6 ft / 195 lbs, often wear a large in outer-wear and found the large is a snug fit. Works as a mid-layer, but cannot put on quickly as a belay jacket. Like others say, it is short in the back and arms
- Fragile - feathers seem to come out whenever I unpack it.

I'd look elsewhere next time, to give another product a shot.

CAMP USA Corsa Ice Axe

CAMP USA Corsa Ice Axe

Rating for this product: 2 May 8, 2009

I bought this axe as my first axe for ski touring. Since I bought a Black Diamond Raven Pro for mountaineering. Even though the Corsa is lighter, I still end up taking the Raven Pro 99% of the time, as I think if ever need to use the axe to self-arrest I want the confidence of the steel pick. The aluminum pick really seems a bit questionable.

Garmont Axon Alpine Touring Boot

Garmont Axon Alpine Touring Boot

Rating for this product: 5 May 8, 2009

I am an experienced skier and use burly alpine boots in resort (currently Lange Banshee Pro). The Axons have been a great buy for me, as they preserve a stiff enough boot for skiing in the backcountry, but have been comfortable/light enough for 3-4 day ski tours. I have mid to narrow feet and use Lange boots for resort skiing, and found Garmont boots to give me a good comparable fit.

G3 Alpinist Climbing Skins

G3 Alpinist Climbing Skins

Rating for this product: 4 May 8, 2009

Bought these to replace my old Black Diamond ascensions. Grip while climbing is comparable. These skins are thinner, so easier to pack into a pocket to keep warm/dry. Had a few more problems with them unsticking from the skis though. The tip attachment was problematic on my old Dynastar Legends, as they have some silly metal on the ski tip. They work great though with my new Mt Bakers. Overall, recommended.

I was previously wary of these breakfast type meals. Tried them on my last two trips and was pleasantly surprised. By far the best of the mountain house meals. Trick is to make sure you drain the water off properly to ensure the eggs aren't soggy. Certainly appreciated the sodium overdose on multi-day trips, and the taste is pretty good.

Marmot Helium Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

Marmot Helium Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 4 May 4, 2009

Compared this bag to my 0F Mountain Hardwear Phantom bag. Obviously it is a 1lb lighter and less warm as a result. I appreciated the lightness on a recent spring skiing trip where overnight temperatures were down to around 20F. Overall it is a great bag. Seemed a little more roomy though than my Mountain Hardwear, which took longer to warm up. Also I missed the baffles around the neck - found myself pulling the hood and the neck draw string tighter as a result. I am 6 ft / 195 lbs and went with the long, mostly so I could put my boot liners, a hot SIG bottle and my wet gloves (around the SIG bottle) at the bottom.

Compact and works well if you're careful

Jetboil Classic Personal Cooking System

Jetboil Classic Personal Cooking System

Rating for this product: 5 April 10, 2009

Used it down to 15F on Mount Baker. If you keep the gas cylinder off the snow then it works fine. Warmed the cylinder up in our sleeping bags when they got too cold. It's a great compact convenient setup - certainly prefer it to the fiddle of white gas stoves. One tip is to build your own hanging kit by using a large hose clamp from a hardware store to wrap around the pot, and then build a hanging kit from perlon. We hung it in the tent (with the door open for ventilation) and that worked great in the colder temperatures. Best feature is the ease of lying in your bag in the morning and quickly making a cup of tea/coffee without having to leave the tent.

The lid pockets work well, the front pocket is great for shovel, probe & skins, and the side entrance to the main compartment allows easy access to your lunch or puffy without undoing the lid. Lange Banshee Pro Ski Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 4, 2009

I love these boots - great flex and plenty stiff enough. I'm 6ft 200lbs,I am a borderline advanced/expert skiier, and ski around 35 days per year. To be honest I was concerned these might be too stiff, but I'm really pleased with my choice. Can certainly flex the boot fine, even on 15F days. Make my backcountry boots (Garmont Axom) seem puny in comparison. One disclosure, I bought mine from Surefoot with their customer liners - I have narrow feet and the fit is excellent.

Great bindings - brakes can be a problem

Dynafit TLT Vertical FT 12 Binding

Dynafit TLT Vertical FT 12 Binding

Rating for this product: 4 December 1, 2008

I love these bindings. I got to demo them on Mount Baker under strange circumstances. I climbed 1,000 ft with one boot in my fritschi freerides on a big fat ski, and the other boot attached to a dynafit binding on a true AT ski. It was amazing to compare the two, especially in the field. The difference in weight with each stride was absolutely amazing. Thumbs up to the guide who switched a ski with me.

I have the previous year (yellow) version of these bindings and they're mostly bomber. The one problem is that the brakes sometimes lock up when you clip out of the binding in a fall. On two occasions I fell, my ski released, and it went rocketing 100s of feet down the hill. Strongly consider using straps if you ski with these bindings.

Fischer Porohete 106 Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 April 2, 2007

Bought a pair and I think they're great. They're soft enough to turn in tight spots but plenty stable at speed. I found them pretty adaptable to all conditions when skiing Whistler and hitting the groomers is the way out at the bottom. I ski around 35-40 days per year, so was a little daunted by the 195cm pro-ski models of some of the fat skis. These in the 190cm length were a good choice - I found them a great upgrade from my Dynastar 8800's.
