If she's a true beginner then I'd recommend renting. She'll hopefully progress quickly to intermediate and then you can decide on the ski which makes sense based on her attitude and ability.

Sounds a tad short - if he's 54" then he's 137cm tall. I suggest you check out the sizing charts. My daughter is 58lbs / 125cm and an advanced skiier and we've just bought her some 123cms.

G3 Alpinist Climbing Skins

G3 Alpinist Climbing Skins

Rating for this product: 5 August 21, 2009

Really like the tip attachment on my K2 Mt Bakers. Unlike the BD Ascensions, there is no way for the tip attachment to come unglued. Also they seem thinner / easier to pack than the BD's. Glide, climbing, etc seem all comparable.

CamelBak Mini Mule Hydration Pack - Kids'

CamelBak Mini Mule Hydration Pack - Kids'

Rating for this product: 5 June 14, 2009

Fitted our 7 year old and 4 year old just fine, with plenty of room for growth. They loved having their own water to drink while riding. They had no problems drinking from the camelbaks. Plenty of storage space for bits & pieces (they carried their teddy bears in the back). Recommended.

K2 Mt. Baker Superlight Alpine Touring Ski

June 3, 2009

The 181cm Mt Baker is longer than it sounds. I compared it with my old 188cm Dynastar Legends and it is about as long. I am 195lbs, like longer skis, and was perfectly happy with the 181cm. Did have to be persuaded in the shop by comparing ski lengths, and it is scary how different manufacturers measure their skis.

I was advised though to skip the superlights and go with the regular bakers. I use mine with dynafits and have been very happy.

K2 Mt. Baker Superlight Alpine Touring Ski

June 3, 2009

I am the same weight and around 6 feet tall. I bought the 181cm regular Mt Baker, after receiving advice from a bunch of different people that the super-light would be pretty soft giving my weight and power. I have been really happy with the regular Mt Baker for multi-day ski tours.

The 181cm Mt Baker is the same length as my old 188cm Dynastar Legend's, and also as long as my 193cm 4Frnt EHPs. K2 seem to have a different approach to measuring ski length.

Good overall, shame no shovel pocket

Mountain Hardwear Dihedral Backpack - 2450-2600cu in

Mountain Hardwear Dihedral Backpack - 2450-2600cu in

Rating for this product: 4 June 2, 2009

I really like this pack for climbing. The compression straps can be clipped around the outside of the pack to hold crampons. The lid pockets are a great size. There are more small pockets than on similar packs (4).

I'm less of a fan of this pack for skiing though. The pocket underneath the white tarp though is a bit of a pain and I would have much preferred to see an externally accessed shovel pocket there, for easy access to skins, shovel and probe. The pack I use for skiing (Black Diamond Anarchist Avalung) has both a good shovel pocket and a side zip for quick access to the main pack.

Marmot Alpinist Tent 2-Person 4-Season

June 2, 2009

I have the previous generation of this tent. Ventilation is ok in the winter/spring, but I normally leave the main door partially open to let air in from the vestibule. The vents in the top are small and there is only a door at one end. I think it would be extremely hot in the summer.

Black Diamond Fritschi Diamir Freeride Plus Binding

May 17, 2009

Either the Marker Baron or the Fritschi Freeride.

If you already have an alpine setup though which you can continue to use inbounds, and you think there is a good chance you'll get deeper into backcountry then definitely worth considering the Dynafit bindings. You'd be glad of it in the longer run, though a steeper initial learning curve.

Functional

Suunto Core Altimeter Watch

Suunto Core Altimeter Watch

Rating for this product: 4 May 9, 2009

Altimeter works well... alarm works... sunrise/sunset is a useful feature... tells the time. All pretty easy to use.

Other than that what I like is the strap is long enough to wrap around the outside of several layers, so you can wear it on cold days and easily tell the time/altitude.

Other people have commented on the watch - it's got a really large face and apparently looks cool.

Biggest downside is the face scratched easily. Battery life has been ok, though have had to replace once in the past year.

Rating for this product: 5 May 8, 2009

My six year old upgraded from her prior rear entry single clip boots. She's already skiing black diamonds and is a technically good skier. Pros and cons

Mountain Hardwear Phantom Down Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Phantom Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 May 8, 2009

Pros
- Lightweight
- Warm

Cons
- Fit - I am 6 ft / 195 lbs, often wear a large in outer-wear and found the large is a snug fit. Works as a mid-layer, but cannot put on quickly as a belay jacket. Like others say, it is short in the back and arms
- Fragile - feathers seem to come out whenever I unpack it.

I'd look elsewhere next time, to give another product a shot.

CAMP USA Corsa Ice Axe

CAMP USA Corsa Ice Axe

Rating for this product: 2 May 8, 2009

I bought this axe as my first axe for ski touring. Since I bought a Black Diamond Raven Pro for mountaineering. Even though the Corsa is lighter, I still end up taking the Raven Pro 99% of the time, as I think if ever need to use the axe to self-arrest I want the confidence of the steel pick. The aluminum pick really seems a bit questionable.

Great touring boot

Garmont Axon Alpine Touring Boot

Garmont Axon Alpine Touring Boot

Rating for this product: 5 May 8, 2009

I am an experienced skier and use burly alpine boots in resort (currently Lange Banshee Pro). The Axons have been a great buy for me, as they preserve a stiff enough boot for skiing in the backcountry, but have been comfortable/light enough for 3-4 day ski tours. I have mid to narrow feet and use Lange boots for resort skiing, and found Garmont boots to give me a good comparable fit.

Good skins - seem thinner than the Black Diamonds

G3 Alpinist Climbing Skins

G3 Alpinist Climbing Skins

Rating for this product: 4 May 8, 2009

Bought these to replace my old Black Diamond ascensions. Grip while climbing is comparable. These skins are thinner, so easier to pack into a pocket to keep warm/dry. Had a few more problems with them unsticking from the skis though. The tip attachment was problematic on my old Dynastar Legends, as they have some silly metal on the ski tip. They work great though with my new Mt Bakers. Overall, recommended.

Mountain House Scrambled Eggs w/ Bacon - Breakfast Entree

Rating for this product: 5 May 4, 2009

I was previously wary of these breakfast type meals. Tried them on my last two trips and was pleasantly surprised. By far the best of the mountain house meals. Trick is to make sure you drain the water off properly to ensure the eggs aren't soggy. Certainly appreciated the sodium overdose on multi-day trips, and the taste is pretty good.

Nice light bag

Marmot Helium Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

Marmot Helium Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 4 May 4, 2009

Compared this bag to my 0F Mountain Hardwear Phantom bag. Obviously it is a 1lb lighter and less warm as a result. I appreciated the lightness on a recent spring skiing trip where overnight temperatures were down to around 20F. Overall it is a great bag. Seemed a little more roomy though than my Mountain Hardwear, which took longer to warm up. Also I missed the baffles around the neck - found myself pulling the hood and the neck draw string tighter as a result. I am 6 ft / 195 lbs and went with the long, mostly so I could put my boot liners, a hot SIG bottle and my wet gloves (around the SIG bottle) at the bottom.

Rating for this product: 5 April 10, 2009

Found these warmer than gloves, with more dexterity. My index finger did get cold, as that's no different to a regular glove, but my other fingers remained warm. The dexterity is helped by each finger being separated within the inner glove.

Rating for this product: 2 April 10, 2009

No fault of the glue, but re-sticking skins is a real pain. Be careful not to get anything near your skins (dirt, paper, etc) when doing so. Worth trying, but don't assume it'll go well.

Compact and works well if you're careful

Jetboil Classic Personal Cooking System

Jetboil Classic Personal Cooking System

Rating for this product: 5 April 10, 2009

Used it down to 15F on Mount Baker. If you keep the gas cylinder off the snow then it works fine. Warmed the cylinder up in our sleeping bags when they got too cold. It's a great compact convenient setup - certainly prefer it to the fiddle of white gas stoves. One tip is to build your own hanging kit by using a large hose clamp from a hardware store to wrap around the pot, and then build a hanging kit from perlon. We hung it in the tent (with the door open for ventilation) and that worked great in the colder temperatures. Best feature is the ease of lying in your bag in the morning and quickly making a cup of tea/coffee without having to leave the tent.

Black Diamond Anarchist with Avalung Winter Pack - 1953-2563 cu in

Rating for this product: 5 April 10, 2009

This is one of my favorite packs, without considering the avalung. The lid pockets work well, the front pocket is great for shovel, probe & skins, and the side entrance to the main compartment allows easy access to your lunch or puffy without undoing the lid. Having the avalung integrated means there is no excuse for not having it ready in sketchy conditions.

Great boots

Lange Banshee Pro Ski Boot - Men's

Lange Banshee Pro Ski Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 4, 2009

I love these boots - great flex and plenty stiff enough. I'm 6ft 200lbs,I am a borderline advanced/expert skiier, and ski around 35 days per year. To be honest I was concerned these might be too stiff, but I'm really pleased with my choice. Can certainly flex the boot fine, even on 15F days. Make my backcountry boots (Garmont Axom) seem puny in comparison. One disclosure, I bought mine from Surefoot with their customer liners - I have narrow feet and the fit is excellent.

POC Lobes Goggle

Rating for this product: 4 December 1, 2008

I bought these at the start of last season. They allow great peripheral vision and rarely get fogged up when used with a helmet. The one downside is that they scratch very easily, partly because the lens is the first thing that touch ski edges in lift lines, etc. After waiting & searching for a long time, I was able to buy two replacement lenses online as I love these goggles.

Great bindings - brakes can be a problem

Dynafit TLT Vertical FT 12 Binding

Dynafit TLT Vertical FT 12 Binding

Rating for this product: 4 December 1, 2008

I love these bindings. I got to demo them on Mount Baker under strange circumstances. I climbed 1,000 ft with one boot in my fritschi freerides on a big fat ski, and the other boot attached to a dynafit binding on a true AT ski. It was amazing to compare the two, especially in the field. The difference in weight with each stride was absolutely amazing. Thumbs up to the guide who switched a ski with me.

I have the previous year (yellow) version of these bindings and they're mostly bomber. The one problem is that the brakes sometimes lock up when you clip out of the binding in a fall. On two occasions I fell, my ski released, and it went rocketing 100s of feet down the hill. Strongly consider using straps if you ski with these bindings.

Rating for this product: 5 November 3, 2008

This is the 3rd pair of these pants we've bought for our kids. The silvercloud color works well, given we have a boy & a girl. The pants seem to keep them dry and warm - no complaints there. Good quality - they've lasted multiple seasons being handed down from one to the other. Also the stitching is easily removed to make the pant legs longer, without requiring any addition sewing. All in all - great pants.

Fischer Porohete 106 Alpine Ski

Fischer Porohete 106 Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 April 2, 2007

Bought a pair and I think they're great. They're soft enough to turn in tight spots but plenty stable at speed. I found them pretty adaptable to all conditions when skiing Whistler and hitting the groomers is the way out at the bottom. I ski around 35-40 days per year, so was a little daunted by the 195cm pro-ski models of some of the fat skis. These in the 190cm length were a good choice - I found them a great upgrade from my Dynastar 8800's.
