Great Mat - highly recommended

Exped DownMat Sleeping Pad

Exped DownMat Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 May 15, 2007

I have 2 of these Mats - a Downmat 9 for my wife who is a colder sleeper and a Downmat 7 for myself. Having used a Thermarest Prolite 4 for the past few years I can say that this mat just blows the Thermarest away for comfort and warmth. Although the Downmat is slightly heavier, I have taken a slightly lighter sleeping bag with me on my last few trips as the insulation in the Downmat easily compensates for the lighter bag and I was just as warm but far more comfortable due to the extra thickness of the Downmat (and the total weight was the same). No more sore hip bones ! It is worth a practice at home to get used to blowing the mat up with the stuff sac but once you get the hang of it - it is a very simple process. A rolled up fleece in the stuff sac also makes for a very, very comfortable pillow. All in all, a fantastic mat. Highly recommended - my old Thermarest Prolite 4 is just sitting on the shelf in my cupboard and I can't see it moving from there now.

Excellent Stove

MSR WindPro Stove

MSR WindPro Stove

Rating for this product: 5 March 21, 2007

Having used many stoves here in Australia (including a Whisperlite Intl, Trangia, MSR Pocket Rocket, Dragonfly) I have found this to be the most efficient stove I have ever used.

Although it is slightly heavier than the Pocket Rocket - it is far more efficient (and simmers better) and the safety due to the more stable design makes it a far better stove. With the lightweight metal windshield in place it outperformed my friend's Pocket Rocket significantly on a a recent 4 day trip to Tasmania (Australia). He needed to carry an extra gas canister to achieve the same results as my Windpro. This easily offset the slightly heavier Windpro (compared to the Pocket Rocket) making the overall package a lighter one by far (one MSR Canister + Windpro was lighter than his Pocket Rocket + 2 canisters).

Safer and lighter overall - a great stove.

Wish it would fit in the Kettle

MSR Pocketrocket Stove w/ Titan Kettle Kit

MSR Pocketrocket Stove w/ Titan Kettle Kit

Rating for this product: 5 March 21, 2007

A great stove for a quick trip - I have used it on a series of trips - mainly day hikes where all I want is a hot cup of coffee at lunch. However, be aware that if you put the Pocket Rocket into it's red triangular shaped plastic container - as per the photo - the stove IN ITS red container will definitely NOT fit into the Kettle with the lid on.

This means you have to leave the stove in the kettle without the protection of the plastic cover and then hope it doesn't rattle around in the kettle to the point that it gets damaged (and annoys you with the sound of it rattling in the kettle in your pack).

You then have to place the Pocket Rocket in your pack in its container as a separate item. I would like to see the kettle a fraction higher to allow the Pocket Rocket to fit in its red triangular container and then in the kettle with the lid on. Otherwise a great unit - just annoying that it doesn't all fit together as per the photo.
