Oakley Stockholm Goggles - Polarized

December 23, 2008

Almost all goggles on the market are double lensed, this one included. Most purveyors of single lensed goggles are cheap off-brand products that you'd probably find in a gas station heading up to the resort. If you're looking at particularly good venting, Smith's goggles with their helmets are designed to work together for no fog. I didn't believe all the marketing hype around Smith's lineup, but after trying it all myself, it makes a huge difference in terms of visibility in any conditions and reduced eye strain with their tapered lens optics. To be fair, I'm burnt out on Oakley because I've had too many of their products fail on me; Smith on the other hand stands behind their gear and gives you better equipment, fairer prices, and a lifetime warranty to boot.Smith Helmets:http://search.backcountry.com/exec/?mv_session_id=L4J2MQQn&aff=1&q=smith+helmet&x=0&y=0Smith Goggles:http://www.backcountry.com/store/SMI0466/Smith-Phenom-Turbo-Fan-Goggle.htmlhttp://www.backcountry.com/store/SMI0462/Smith-Prodigy-Goggle.htmlhttp://www.backcountry.com/store/SMI0391/Smith-Anthem-Spherical-Series-Goggles-Mirror-Lens-Womens.htmlI'm interested to hear what you decide to buy, and feel free to drop me a line if you have any other questions.Cheers!Matt Fuller - mattf@bikemonkeyranch.com

Salomon Lord Ski

December 23, 2008

The length of the ski is really a personal preference, I'm similarly sized and prefer to ski on a 167, even in the backcountry. I'd shy away from the 185, if you're looking to ski *on* the powder instead of in it, I'd recommend wider skis over longer skis. The primary difference between the Lines is a narrower tip and wider waist. This slightly alters your turn radius, but nothing close to noticing. If you're not dead set on a twin tip, I'd seriously consider the Rossi Phantom SC80. It's a fantastic all mountain ski, and the integrated binding system makes everything a snap. They're my primary ski of choice, and I just bought a pair for my dad. He can't wait to take them up onto the hill this week.http://www.backcountry.com/store/ROS0395/Rossignol-Phantom-SC-80-Alpine-Ski-w-Axial2-120-Binding.htmlNo matter what you wind up with, I'm interested to hear how it works out for you. Drop me a line if you'd like more help deciding or to let me know what you choose.Cheers!Matt Fuller - mattf@bikemonkeyranch.com

Bilt Fresco Water Bottle - 29oz

November 12, 2008

The bottle shouldn't have any trouble fitting into a car cupholder, but for whatever it's worth I prefer Camelbak's Better Bottle. They're BPA free, super durable, and I know for a fact that they fit into car cupholders, the .75L is almost always 'compatible'.Better Bottles keep the water at easier access, no need to unscrew a lid to drink; just bite and suck. Park Tool Professional Race Stand - PRS-15

November 12, 2008

$199 seems pretty reasonable to me. Nashbar may be cheaper, but Backcountry covers your shipping (UPS Ground), gives you an unlimited return policy, and also kicks tons of money into the industry and community to support good causes. As for this stand, Park makes the best stands around. I've had my PRS-15 stand for quite a while and it just keeps on doing its job. Don't scrimp on a stand, they're worth every penny when your friends derailleur gets sucked into their rear wheel and busts a few spokes.

Reynolds SDVT 700 Wheel Set

October 21, 2008

I wish I could help you out, but since I haven't actually used this wheelset I don't know what I can help you with. What I can provide is an unsolicited opinion. Whenever I build a bike, I try to figure out a balance between how much it's costing against weight against performance. I figure out a cost per gram for certain parts, how light I want to keep things, and even though I have a new BMC road bike with '09 SRAM Red + Force, I'm well on my way to having the thing cost pennies per mile (currently just under $1/mile). Add some commuter miles to your steed instead of driving, and the bike will more than have paid for itself in no time.Unsolicited opinion #2: Most people don't need a crazy expensive wheelset like this. Even I don't need a crazy expensive wheelset like this. For whatever it's worth, Mavic and Easton both make some fantastic wheelsets at about half the price. They're not nearly as technically advanced, and you don't get the funny looks while riding, but they're easier to use since they're not Deep-V rims, and since they're not as expensive people are more apt to actually put miles on them instead of letting them collect dust until race day. Here's one of my favorite wheelsets:http://www.backcountry.com/store/MAV0021/Mavic-Ksyrium-SL-Premium.htmlFeel free to drop me a line if you have more specific questions, I'd love to help out where I can.mattf [at] bikemonkeyranch.com

Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow

Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow

Rating for this product: 5 October 17, 2008

The Thermarest Pack Pillow has been fantastic on many of my trips where I find myself lacking a suitable pillow.

Operating instructions:
Just loosen up, beat the crap out of it, and wait 15 minutes before crashing for optimal fluffage. Medium is my optimal size (strictly carry-on bags/size+weight ratio), your mileage may vary.

Maintenance + care:
When you're not too busy beating it, just be sure to wash it every now and then. Please be considerate of your pillow's feelings and use a front-loading washer if possible. Fluffageability remains constant even after frequent purgings.

Zipp Speed Weaponry 145 Carbon Stem

October 16, 2008

A lot of that depends on your current frame size, whether or not you fit well on it, etc. I'm 5'10", ride on a 56cm frame with a 100 mm stem. When I lent out my bike to my friend who is almost 6', we just raised the seat slightly (my legs are short and torso is super long) and put on a 120mm stem that he had kicking around.I'd look at what you currently have, and then go from there. If you're unsure, a local bike shop that specializes in bike fitting should be able to give you the best idea.

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Men's

October 15, 2008

I absolutely love my Shift Softshell. I picked one up for last winter, and it's lived through 125+ brutal days on the slopes and in the backcountry and beyond.1) Very warm.It depends on your body's internal heating system, my body doesn't mind cold. The PolarTec PowerShield material keeps the nastiest of winds from punching through. I've personally worn it in nearly 100 mph gusts of wind.I also wear the jacket around casually, it's great anywhere.2) Wrist closuresSorry Charlie. I leave that up to my Hestra gloves, and they do a darned awesome job.3) Lining rocks.Back to that awesome Polartec PowerShield magic, the stuff is awesome in any weather. Here's how I would typically wear the gear day in and day out this winter, even down to -10°:Base Layer: Backcountry.com Merino Shirthttp://www.backcountry.com/store/BCC0104/Backcountry-Merino-Crew-Shirt-Long-Sleeve-Mens.htmlMid Layer [optional]: Thermal long-sleeve shirt (typically 50/50 Cotton/Poly blend)Soft Shell: Backcountry.com Shift Softshell. That's it. Simple as that.Feel free to drop me a line if you have more questions or just post them and I'll be happy to help you out. Thule Spare Me

October 15, 2008

My parents have a Toyota RAV4 with a similar spare tire situation. When I was setting them up with a rack, we looked at these racks but felt that bikes clanging into each other is far worse than a few extra pounds (which honestly your car frame can handle, no questions asked). If you have the funds available, go for a Yakima Hold-Up or a Thule T2 Rack and a light-duty hitch. CamelBak Daxio Hydration Pack w/0.5L Bottle

October 15, 2008

The Daxio is Camelbak's branching out into the student market. You have a few of options for hydration in this:1) Hands-Free AdapterJust use Camelbak's hands-free adapter for your Better Bottle that comes with the pack. You don't have to get your pack out, and water comes right to you. The downside is that .5L is really not much water.http://www.backcountry.com/store/CAM0263/CamelBak-Better-Bottle-Hands-Free-Adapter.html2) Camelbak ReservoirA Camelbak Hydrotanium Reservoir would in theory work well, but it has its own flaws. The reservoir is designed to go into the laptop sleeve, and while I've never had problems with a leaky reservoir, they can be floppy and a pain to work with. That being said, you can still easily get a 3L reservoir in there with some extra gear. No laptop.http://www.backcountry.com/store/CAM0158/CamelBak-Omega-HydroTanium-Hydration-Reservoir.html3) Camelbak Unbottle or StoawayHere's my favorite option. The Unbottle or Stoaway can be used in any pack, any time, doesn't really matter. It's a little more self-contained, etc.If you want to take the pack skiing or into the cold, the stoaway has a handy insulated tube to help with freezing. You can defeat the anti-freezing thing by just blowing water out of the hose and back into the reservoir though.http://www.backcountry.com/store/CAM0237/CamelBak-Unbottle-Hydration-Pack-3L.htmlhttp://www.backcountry.com/store/CAM0254/CamelBak-Stoaway-Hydration-Reservoir.html

The structure should support the triple, but there's a good chance that it'll extend beyond your vehicle substantially. This causes huge wind drag problems and can absolutely tank your car's mileage when you're hauling at 80mph down the interstate.

Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag

August 9, 2008

The extra large bag has a TPRCV of 20.What is TPRCV you ask?The geniuses at Timbuk2 explain it best:We know you don't have time to buy the wrong size bag. We also know you're imaginative and visually oriented problem solvers living in a three dimensional world where toilet paper is routinely available.Soft, stackable and building block-like, toilet paper rolls can be easily arranged to simulate the internal dimensions of any bag.Working in tandem with our R&D department, our marketing team recently completed an assessment of each bag. We have identified, down to the roll, the maximum capacity for each bag we tested. The resulting TPRCV (Toilet Paper Roll Capacity Value) can be used in a simple, at-home comparison of corresponding stacks of TPR, helping you make an informed decision about what size bag best suits your purposes. You will need a flat, level surface, a maximum of twenty-one toilet paper rolls (TPRs), your imagination, and your design and rendering skills. For best results, use two-ply.

JanSport Air Vital Backpack - 1750cu in

Yes! This bag is just under half the size of the pack I take on a week long backpacking trip! Big bags, especially with younger kids generally equates to bad news. CamelBak Omega HydroTanium Hydration Reservoir

August 9, 2008

First, make sure that your bite valve is open. DO NOT TAKE A KNIFE TO IT. This will make it leaky. If the bite valve is shut, gently massage it until it opens.Second, be sure that the flow valve is open. This is located just behind the bite valve.Third, make sure there aren't any kinks in the line. Placement of the bag on your back makes no difference as the Camelbak isn't gravity-fed. You suck (vacuum) the water out of the reservoir.Hope this helps, and remember to Hydrate or Die.

Pacsafe CourierSafe 100 Messenger Bag

August 7, 2008

With all of the new products coming into the warehouse right now, I imagine it'd take Backcountry's in-house photo studio a while to get some more detailed shots of the bag. Also, the manufacturer doesn't seem to provide any detailed shots either. The handle on this bag looks perfectly sized to hook around a rolling carry-on bag, but your mileage may vary. While photos are cool and all, it's better to see and handle the product for yourself. With Backcountry's amazingly generous return policy, I'd recommend ordering the bag, seeing how it would work with your carry-on, and if it doesn't work just return it. No hassles, no worries, it's easy.

NEMO Equipment Inc. Losi 3P Tent 3-Person 3-Season

August 7, 2008

In theory, a seam-sealed tent shouldn't need to be re-sealed. Ever. It depends on the manufacturing process, type of sealant used, and how often you use it.For whatever it's worth, in the case of my MSR Hubba Hubba, I had one for years that had no problems with the seal. I've since upgraded to the Hubba Hubba HP, and even after using it for a couple of full-year seasons and I still don't have any issues.

NEMO Equipment Inc. Losi 3P Tent 3-Person 3-Season

August 7, 2008

It completely depends on your use for the tent, hence the myriad of combinations. In all honesty, any tent should have a sealed seam. This keeps the tent waterproof, and if seams aren't sealed, moisture will be able to wick in overnight, even if it doesn't rain. You can either seal the seams yourself with a sealant product, or you can buy a tent with pre-sealed seams.Taped seams help eliminate some of the waterproofing issues, and are a good start, but a taped seam should still be sealed.Hope this helps eliminate some confusion!

Sidi Bullet 2 Bike Shoe - Men's

When you typically buy shoes, if you buy wide, I'd get a wide shoe. You want your shoes to be snug but not constricting, so a half-size larger than your current size may or may not be any help to you.Sorry for being incredibly vague, but shoes are one of those tricky areas that are incredibly specific for everyone. DAKINE Prom Pack - Women's - 1750cu in

August 6, 2008

Whether or not this is a good pack for school completely depends on your needs. There's a fair amount of padding on the pack, but it's also big. Bigger packs = bigger loads, meaning most people cram more junk into their packs than they need and carry around dead weight. Also, if you need to carry around a laptop, this pack probably isn't that great of an idea.I personally prefer a messenger bag, having a single compartment for all of my gear makes things easy to find, makes sure that I keep it relatively tidy, and they're great for commuting by bike.Check it out:http://search.backcountry.com/exec/?q=timbuk2&x=0&y=0http://search.backcountry.com/exec/?q=crumpler&x=0&y=0
