Pro-tec IPS Hip Pads

Pro-tec IPS Hip Pads - Men's

Pro-tec IPS Hip Pads - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 January 2, 2010

I have both the Pro-tec IPS hip pads, and the Demon Flex-Force Low Padded shorts. I don't like these pads (Pro-tec IPS) because for me they didn't fig snug around the leg/upper thigh region. I ordered a medium and am 6ft 165lbs. They also don't have as thick of padding, and as much tailbone support as the Demon pair does.
As for a review of just the Pro-tec Hip Pads. I give them 3 stars because they aren't the greatest protection, but do have adequate padding all over. The butt, thighs, hip, and quads are all protected which is nice. The padding isn't the thickest but would certainly lessen a blow on a rail or whatever it is that you're using these for.
They're stretchy and conform to your body, and are also pretty light and would easily conceal themselves under a pair of ski/snowboard pants or any type of pant that is somewhat loose.

Pro-tec IPS Hip Pads - Men's

January 2, 2010

It really depends on how big your thighs are. I am 6 foot, 165 lbs and I ordered a medium and they aren't snug around the thigh/leg area. Had I ordered a small then I would probably be ok. I would say my legs are slightly skinnier than average though and these would probably fit the average thigh just about right.

Oakley Splice Goggle

October 17, 2009

The splice is meant for "medium to large" faces according to Oakley. So it's going to be pretty much like your Wisdoms.
Worst case scenario, if you really want to give these things a try, is to order them and if they don't fit simply send them back for a full refund. You will have to pay return shipping though, so you'll be out $6 or so. Not too bad of a gamble in my opinion, because these are supposed to be the latest greatest thing out there in goggle technology.
I will add though that these are more similar to the Crowbars, and I don't think they look at big on my face as the Wisdoms do. I own both types.

K2 Rant Pro Helmet

October 7, 2009

It's tough to tell the size that will work best. Since the 58 cm is on the medium and the large.
The good news is, if it doesn't fit for him, you may send it back and they'll send you a large. They'll give you a full refund when they receive it. You will have to pay return shipping though, which will probably be around $7.
But this site has great customer service. If you do end up having to send it back just click on the "chat now" button at the top right of the screen and an agent will set you up with a return number and get the large helmet on its way.
Hope everything works out in the first place and you don't have to re-order.

Forum Youngblood Snowboard

October 7, 2009

For you a 152 is going to be on the longer side of the spectrum. You could go anywhere from a 148-154 and probably be ok.
A couple things to keep in mind though. The longer the board is the tougher it's going to be to control and manuever. So if you're a beginner you may want to look into something shorter.
A longer board is going to get you higher speeds and will be better in powder.
If you are still growing, like in middle school or high school and think you have a ways to go, then I would say it wouldn't be a bad idea at all to get the 152. Because if it's a little long this year, it'll be perfect for you next year.
Overall, you'll probably be ok in a 152, especially if this is the best deal you can find. The only thing I'd be worried about it is maybe being a tad too long for you. But like I said, if you're still growing, you should be ok for sure.

Burton Wheelie Board Case

October 7, 2009

These don't exactly have a strong backbone of support running through them. I have one and do the same as you're looking to do. One board, and all my gear. If you had enough stuff you could probably get it to keep from drooping. However, I have a 158 board, and a 156 case, and it still fits. So your 157 shouldn't have any problem fitting into a 156 case.

Forum Aura Snowboard - Women's

October 7, 2009

First, a 143 would be perfect for you. My wife weighs exactly what you do, has a 143, and loves it. Plus, the size charts match up for this size too.
Because you are a beginner I would definitely recommend you have a board that is on the smaller end of the spectrum. With it being shorter it will be so much easier for you to control and maneuver.
And yes this would be a great all mountain board. It is designed for "all mountain" so you're good to go no matter where you go and what you try.
Also, just so you know, it is a directional board, which means one binding is closer to the end of the board than the other. Meaning you want the side that's closest to the end to be the back of your board. This way you will float over the snow easier.
You'll love this board. I ride a Forum too, and I love it!

Burton Deuce Snowboard

October 4, 2009

Yes, Yes, Yes and Yes.
Great board for the mountain and parks. Geared slightly more towards the park, but also made for anything anywhere on the mountain. As for durability, it's just like any other snowboard. If you treat it well, keep in waxed and take care of it, it's going to take care of you.
I would definitely say it's worth buying if you like the looks of it and can afford it. It's a great price at 40% off and Burton makes top of the line equipment.
If it breaks, which it never should under normal riding conditions, don't even worry about fixing it. If there is any defect or malfunction with the board backcountry will take it back for a full refund. You can simply order another one why you're at it and they'll credit your account when they receive your old board. They have great customer service. You can't go wrong buying from here.

Patagonia Primo Down Jacket - Women's

Well white is obviously the toughest thing to keep looking clean, but the exterior material is nylon which should repel most stains and dirt. After all, it is waterproof so you don't have to worry about liquid stains too much, and it should wash up nicely as well.
Just remember not to dry it in the dryer using any heat. This will ruin the waterproofing.

Helly Hansen Barika Bomber Jacket - Women's

September 30, 2009

Here you go. I got this from the backcountry site:

"Before I get to the difference between a 5K jacket and a 20K jacket, I need to clarify a few things. A 20K rating, sometimes written as 20,000mm, means that a jacket's fabric can withstand 20,000 millimeters (almost 66 feet) of rain in 24 hours before its wearer gets wet. So, a 5K jacket can take up to 16 feet of rain in 24 hours. Given that the record for the most rainfall in a day is about 6 feet, both options sound pretty damn waterproof.

You should also know that a jacket's waterproof rating is for the fabric, not the entire jacket. A jacket's fabric might be able to handle several feet of rainfall, but if the seams aren't sealed, then water can usually get in. So if you want the best waterproofing, look for a fully seam-sealed jacket (also called fully taped). A 20K waterproof jacket is virtually pointless if the seams aren't taped.

Now, to get down to your question. As I said, a 5K jacket's fabric can withstand 16 feet of rain, but manufacturers generally don't tape all the seams (if at all). These jackets often have a waterproof coating (DWR or Teflon, for example) instead of a waterproof membrane integrated into the fabric (like The North Face's HyVent). Zippers aren't waterproofed. If it dumps snow, you probably won't stay dry very long. The 5K jacket is typically a lifestyle piece or a jacket to wear on sunny days—not one I'd rely on for waterproof protection in the backcountry or a crappy weather day on the ski slopes.

Then there's 10K. 10K is more than 5K, you say? Bingo. You can confidently take that jacket out on a powder day in Utah or Colorado or wear it during a short cloudburst. But it might not hold up to wetter coastal snow or hours in the rain on the Olympic Peninsula. Do take note of its construction—for example, are its seams taped? Does it have waterproof zippers? Does it have a membrane construction?

A 20K jacket will keep you dry in nearly any condition. A manufacturer that bothers to make a jacket from 20K-rated fabric with a membrane is probably going to cover every seam and use waterproof zippers and storm flaps. I would feel confident in any coastal snowstorm in a 20K jacket."

O ya, you can definitely rock a 159 for sure. Especially in the park, the shorter size will come in handy for more control and maneuverability. And with you height being under 6 foot, I would definitely say a 159. If you go much bigger you're gonna start to feel like you've got clown feet as a snowboard. The board will just be too big and clumsy.

That's correct, and I highly doubt they'll get any other in considering it's a discontinued color and this jacket is a previous years model. If you really love the jacket, and think that from the size chart they give that you might be able to wear a medium w/o it being huge, you could always buy it and if it did turn out to be too large you could just send it back for a full refund. Oakley Parade Down Jacket - Women's

I found this on shop.com
"Description: A down insulated jacket with hand pockets, quilted stitching, piping detail, front screen print, a removable hood with pull and magnet system, underarm vents, storm flaps, and wrist gaiters.
Specifications: 80/20 Duck Down"
So from what they describe it sounds like your typical Oakley Jacket. Doesn't talk about powder skirt, waterproof and breathable, and pass holder, but considering it says it has wrist gaiters and their magnet system on the hood, I'm guessing it comes with what you're wanting.
If for some reason Oakley decided to go cheap on a coat and it doesn't have all this, you can always send it back and get a full refund. You will have to pay return shipping. So I guess it's about a $7 dollar gamble.

Ya, I don't think you want a 159. It would somewhat depend on what type of riding you want to do. If this is a "powder only" board though like you seem to be saying you might be ok. It's really personal preference. I don't know what other boards you have, but for example, if you have a 156 and like it just fine, then you could probably get away with a 159 powder board. K2 Luna Snowboard - Women's

September 19, 2009

Ok, I don't know what all information you need but hopefully I can help some. As for a good board, you basically get what you pay for. The more expensive, the better it's gonna be. I would look for something that is an allmountain board. This way, as you're learning, you can take it anywhere, terrain park, fresh powder, or the bunny slope. This way you have maximum versatility. If you can find a board with a 'transworld good wood' award, then you know for sure that its a great board.
This would be a good beginner board for you (k2 luna). You have an advantage being a girl too because their boards are cheaper. Make sure you get a womens board though, they have a softer flex and are meant more for women (obviously).
Since you're a beginner I would buy a board from last years model line. (unless money isn't a problem) This way you can save some money and catch a good deal. Here's a list of the top ten womens boards under $400 from last year.

Nitro Anthem Boot

Nitro Anthem Snowboard Boot - Men's

Nitro Anthem Snowboard Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 16, 2009

I was a little reluctant ordering these at first because of their smaller name brand but am very pleased I did.
I got these halfway through the 08-09 season because my previous boots were hurting the outside of my feet. I love the way these fit. They are plenty warm and pretty comfortable. I gave them 4/5 stars because of a few reasons. First, they could be a little more comfortable. Sometimes the tongue of the boot slides its way over to the side and can start causing discomfort. I definitely have to wear tall, warm socks to keep the tongue from sraping against my leg when it moves over. Second, the toe of this boot is kind of small. It's not small for my feet but small on the outside which causes a strange fit into my binding. I certainly have to cinch my bindings up more than usual to make the boots snug.
Not the greatest boot out there for sure but for the money it's not a bad purchase. Overall I'm pretty pleased.
One nice thing about these that I'd like to note is the moldable liner. I haven't had them molded to my feet yet, but I'm sure this would certainly help.

Hey Sean, you could ride anything from a 130-145 pretty much. Since it sounds like you want to ride in the terrain park, I would go with something around 135 or slightly longer, because I'm assuming your growing pretty fast. If this is the board you are interested in, the only size they have is a 136 which I feel would be perfect for you. I little on the shorter side so you can get all those tricks in with better control.

Well I suppose you could, but they really aren't made for street wear. You're probably going to get uncomfortable quite quickly if you're just walking around the city in them. Snowboard boots are made to keep your foot and ankle secure and protected and are much stiffer than normal snow boots. So I wouldn't recommend it.

K2 Snowboards Brigade Snowboard - Wide

September 12, 2009

You're definitely going to want the 163cm board. And it's also helpful that this board is wide as well, because I'm assuming you have over a size 10 or 11 shoe, and it will also distribute your weight just a little more.
If you've never boarded before I would recommend renting a board first, and trying to get a good idea if you like the sport and what size of board you need. It's certainly much cheaper than spending $350 on a board and $200+ more on boots and bindings.
However if you've already done this I would look for something around a size 163. Some may say that a 163 is too small for you for your weight, but you're only 6'1" and if you start going too much longer than the board is going to be hard to maneuver.
Good luck, hope this helps!

Well I'm not sure the temperatures you run in, but it is definitely a very light coat. Only 10.6 ounces, which would be good for running. It is also waterproof which is good for the heavy rain part. For the wind it will be great as well. Your only issue may be how cold of weather you run in. If it gets too cold you could always throw on something like a fleece pullover underneath to keep you warm.

Salomon Sonic Snowboard Boot - Kids'

September 10, 2009

I'm not sure what you mean by heavy. But these are going to weigh about the same as every other kids snowboard boot weighs. Not excessively heavy, but not light either.
If you're worried about them slowing down the person wearing them or being cumbersome, this shouldn't be a problem. Every manufacturer realizes that their product needs to be as light, comfortable, and agile as possible and factors in that you're going to be walking in them and riding/standing with them on for long periods of time. So they should be just fine for you as far as weight is concerned.

Ok, these goggles in my opinion look way cooler in person than they do on the picture here that backcountry has. I have a pair and love their looks, and of course love how they perform.
Just like any other Oakley goggle, THEY DON'T FOG UP! Which is probably the most important characteristic in a goggle. On top of that they are crystal clear lenses and the Crowbars fit my face really well.

SkullCandy Titan Bud

Skullcandy Titan Ear Buds

Skullcandy Titan Ear Buds

Rating for this product: 5 September 10, 2009

I picked these up off Whiskeymilitia.com for $23 and love them. They were well worth the money spent. Skullcandy is a great brand for audio accessories and they make high quality stuff. These headphones sound really great. I especially like how when they seal in your ear, therefore also sealing out all the outside/background noise around you. So you could be in downtown NYC, or mowing the lawn for example, and not have to have your headphones cranked up blasting your eardrums out all the time, trying to drown out all the background noise.
However, when you do crank up the tunes, they perform wonderful as well. The bass in them for earbuds, I would rate 8/10 and the treble 9/10. They sound crystal clear and are well worth the price tag.
Unless you're one of those super picky audio people, who picks apart how every little thing sounds as if they're some professional, you're gonna love these. They're the best earbuds I've ever listened to for under $50.

Burton Blunt Snowboard - Wide - 08/09

September 9, 2009

You would probably be ok. It's definitely at the smaller end of the spectrum of boards you could get. I certainly wouldn't go any smaller. And it is a wide board as well, so it does have a little more surface area than a regular board to distribute your weight better. Not much of a difference, but it is some.
I weigh 165 and have ridden a 156 before, which is as small as "they" say I should go, and felt fine. So I'd say you'd be ok. Go for it!

Burton Custom Smalls Snowboard - Kids' - 09/10

September 8, 2009

Well he needs a larger board for sure. I would go anything from a 130-137. Considering that he's probably growing like a weed, something closer to a 137 would be ideal, that way it'll fit him longer. As for his feet getting bigger, the waist width (how wide the board is) around this year's Burton Chopper 125cm (they don't make a 126) is 230mm. So I'm guessing that's really close to the waist width of the board your son has now. So you need to find something with a considerably larger width than that. Especially since he'll probably be in size 8 boots before you know it.
The Burton Dom Grom is one possibility. They make a 134 and it has a waist width of 237mm. It is however geared more towards a park board.
The 135 Custom Smalls and 135 Custom V-Rocker Smalls both have a waist width of 234mm. These boards are also both geared more towards park, but could be used all-mountain as well. I'm not sure how much his boots are hanging over, but if you don't think 4mm or 7mm is enough extra width, then I would look into something that is obviously a little wider. You can search the site for other kids boards that backcountry has. They unfortunately only show the waist width for one size of any given particular snowboard, so you have to go to the manufacturer's website (like burton.com) and research that particular board there to find out how wide they are (waist).
You may want to look into getting him a woman's board as well. Many of the woman boards they make today look just as cool and similar to mens boards, and they would offer a little more flex, have a wider waist than junior boards, and be more suitable for someone his size.
Hope this helps! Goodluck!

Oakley Helena Jacket - Women's

September 8, 2009

The jacket does have insulation. It isn't just a shell. However the insulation probably wouldn't be enough to keep you warm when it gets down to below freezing temps. It's hard to tell though, some people just get colder than others. But you could obviously throw on a sweatshirt underneath and probably be fine, due to the 15k waterproof rating that this jacket has, you don't have to worry about getting wet. And it is also a loose fit, so there would be plenty of room for another jacket or sweatshirt underneath.
And I am certain that it does have at least one interior pocket. Large enough for a pair of glasses, or a mens wallet, or mp3 player. I don't know why they only talk about the exterior pockets in the description, but wouldn't be surprised if there were a few more interior pockets. I have two oakley jackets and my girlfriend has one as well, and they all have 2 or 3 interior pockets, so I don't see why this one would be any different. You could always send it back for a full refund, no questions asked, if for some reason you got it and didn't like it.

Burton Operator Smalls Snowboard - Kids'

September 8, 2009

I would put you in anything from a 135-145 board. It depends on what kind of riding you want to do, how good you are, and a few other personal preferences. Hopefully I can help.
A shorter board is going to be easier to control, handle, and turn. It will also be better in the terrain park. (135-140 for you)
Longer boards go faster, are more stable at high speeds, and are better in powder. (140-145)
If I were to pick out a board for you I would go with a more shorter length simply because they are easier to control and handle. You can always go faster by going down a steeper hill. I don't know your exact skill level and what you like to do on the mountain though, so it makes it tough, but for me, I can ride anything from a 156-163 and ride a 158 and love it. And I wouldn't have any problems with going down to a 156 either. I just prefer something shorter and more maneuverable.
As for your size 6 shoe, I'm assuming you wrote on your own account (jeff) therefore this is a men's size. You're going to need a size small in bindings.

I wouldn't if I were you. You might be ok with the 162. It has a waist width of 250mm but that's still pushing it with a size 12 boot. It also depends on what angle you set your stance at. The more of an angle the easier a larger boot will fit on a smaller board.
I have a size 12 and ride a wide board. I think you would be better off with finding something with a larger waist. You don't want toe drag!

Burton Stigma Snowboard - Women's

September 3, 2009

Well the reason for the length gap is simply because of all the different riding styles and preferences that come with snowboarding.
Longer boards go faster, are more stable at higher speeds, and are great for powder. While shorter boards are easier to maneuver, turn, and control, and are also better in the terrain park. Longer boards are usually preferred by more advanced riders while shorter boards are more for beginners.
Considering that it sounds like you are a decent boarder, and can get around the mountain without much of a problem, I would probably look into something more towards the middle to upper end of the spectrum. I would say something from a 143 to 150 would be ideal. My g/f is 5'5" 115 and rides a 143 and absolutely loves it. And she is a pretty good boarder. So it comes down to what YOU want. More control and easier to handle and maneuver? Go with a 143-147. More speed, and easier to rider powder? 147-150.
Personally, if I were you, I would go with the 143-147 range. It'll just be easier to ride all around. If you want to go faster, you can always find a steeper hill!

Burton Blender Snowboard - Women's

September 3, 2009

This board would be great for a beginner because of the opportunity it would give you to advance your skill level. It's a great board, hence the Transworld Snowboarding Good Wood award from 2009 that is received. So it's LEGIT! It is however a freestyle board which means it's built more for the terrain park, therefore the edges are angled up a few degrees so you won't catch an edge on a rail and faceplant for example. This also means you won't be able to carve as easily in hardpacked and icy conditions. Given that you're just a beginner, you probably won't know much difference anyways, which is perfectly fine. I just want you to know what you're purchasing.
As far as size goes, you could get anything from a 140-150. This again depends on what you want to do. Longer boards are faster, more stable at high speeds, and better in powder. Shorter boards are easier to control, turn, and maneuver.
If I were you, considering that you're still somewhat of a beginner, I would shoot for something around 145. So a 143-147. I definitely wouldn't go any longer than 147 for sure! That's almost too long in my opinion. My g/f is 5'6" 115 and rides a 143 and loves it, and she is pretty decent.
I personally prefer shorter boards simply because they are easy to control and handle.

This is really a personal preference question because of all the variables possible. But anything from a 130-145 would be fine. Considering he's "advanced" I would put him in something closer to the 145 than the 130. Especially if he's riding powder and all mountain. If he likes the terrain park, shoot for something more towards the middle, say 135-140. The most important thing is getting him a nice board that he can improve and advance his skills with.

Burton Custom Snowboard

September 3, 2009

You are definitely ok with the wide board, however the length is dependant on your skill and preference. I wouldn't go with any longer board than a 162. Especially if you're more of a beginner. I am 6'1" 165 pounds size 12 shoe and ride a wide 158. That is pretty much as long of a board as I would like.
Basically, the shorter the board the more control you'll have, the longer the board, the faster you'll be able to go and more stable it'll be at high speeds. Also a longer board is better in powder, while a shorter one is better in the terrain park. So it really depends on what type of riding you'll be doing and your skill level (shorter boards for beginners).
If I were you and could find a 160Wide I would probably go with that. But if the only thing available is the 162, you should be fine, after all it's only 2 more centimeters.

Oakley Stockholm Goggle - Polarized

Rating for this product: 5 September 3, 2009

Oakley makes incredible eyewear and this pair of goggles delivers exceptional performance.
I purchased these for my sister and she loves them. They never fog on her, are crystal clear, and the Polarized lenes improve depth perception and clarity on the snow. It's so much easier to distinguish the terrain and see all those little bumps and hard packed areas that find yourself catching an edge if you aren't equipped with the proper eye protection. And these goggles are definitely it.
They are worth the money and especially from this site because of their return policy which is the greatest on the web. If they break, crack, the strap snaps, anything that malfunctions that shouldn't, they'll take your return and replace you with new ones.

Well if you like the style of this board, then this puppy is for you. It's meant to do just what you want, carve. I would advise anything from a 157 to 163. It all just depends on personal preference. Keep in mind the longer the board, the easier it floats on powder and the faster it'll go, and the shorter the board the easier it will be to control. So with the riding you're wanting to do, I'd settle somewhere in the middle. I'm 6 foot, 165 and ride a 158 and find that length to be perfect.

Do you mean the Never Summer Lotus? I'm not aware of Backcountry having a Salomon Lotus. But both would be a good choice for her. I'm guessing this is for a present for her so you couldn't ask her which design she likes more. Either one is great for all mountain riding. I might lean toward the Never Summer simply because they make really good quality products and back their boards with a 3 year warranty. That is almost unheard of.

Burton Bullet Snowboard - Wide - 08/09

November 24, 2008

Yes, you definitely need a wide board with your 13.5 shoes. So this would work. I'm not sure of your skill level but since you've been riding for 5 years I would guess your pretty decent. This is the lowest end Burton board you can buy. Therefore I would be a little afraid of it possibly holding you back. Again, it depends on how good you are and how good you plan on becoming. But just keep in mind that you get what you pay for. If you want a Burton board, go to burton.com and look at their lineup. Then you can come back here and purchase what you want. From Burton's website you can even sort them by just the wide boards they manufacture, which you most certainly need.

You scrape it off with a scraper, then use this tool. The nylon side then the copper side.Structuring it means you're making the wax flow in one direction to make your skis go even smoother. If you're not a racer though, you probably aren't going to even notice any difference. I don't use a copper brush when I wax. The nylon side does a good enough job for me. It buffs the wax, and structures it as far as I'm concerned.

You need a bag that is longer than 145, and it'll only hold one board with bindings.-------The 146 would be perfect for your 145. It usually fits a board a little longer than the length, so your 145 would fit it perfect. And you could cram a few things in there with it, like gloves, hat, maybe some pants.

Like stated above, it's really personal preference. But if it helps, I like using the Persimmon lenses for an all around choice. And they run pretty cheap compared to some of the other ones you can buy from Oakley.

Oakley Crosshair Sunglasses

Hey, Grant. If I'm looking for glasses to last me a while, I go for a more substantial frame. I guess it totally depends on your M.O. Are you hard on stuff? If you're hooked on these glasses, know that Oakleys always come in non-scratching cloth bags and zipper-sided hard cases. If you wrap them up in their protection every time you take them off, they'll last longer for sure. Good luck.----------Keep this in mind too bud. If you buy these from backcountry, they have a lifetime warranty on them. So if they break, you can send them back. So will they last you a long time? DAKINE Adjustable Tuning Iron - USA

November 12, 2008

Yes, you're going to want to wax your board. It's really pretty important to keep it in good shape. Waxing with an iron opens up the pours on your board and allows the wax to get into them enabling you to glide across the snow much faster. A coat of wax also helps protect your board from getting damaged, and from oxidating. You'll want an iron that has a temperature setting on it so you know how hot it is, because you can ruin your board if it gets too hot, and waxing won't work if it's not hot enough. As for wax, I use the Swix stuff they have on here. It's like $10 and it even tells you how hot to set your iron to wax w/ it. You can youtube "how to wax a snowboard" and find out how all the rest works.

It's an elastic strap/band that snaps together around your waist snugly, and is at the same time attached to the inside of your coat. It cinches around your waist sort of like a belt. This then keeps the snow/powder from getting in up through your coat. You'll love them, they're quite nice to have. And you don't always have to wear it. If you're using the coat to walk around (leisure) the powder skirt simply attaches to the inside of the coat and stays out of the way.

The fire lenses block a little more light, making the bright sunny days a little easier on your eyes. The persimmon lens is more of an all around lens. It's made for more overcast days, but still isn't to straining on your eyes on the bright sunny days. The fire lenses are also reflective looking from the outside if this is something you like or want. So if your eyes are more sensitive to light, then they're worth the money, but in my case, I prefer the persimmon lens in more conditions than the fire lens.

Pretty simple bud. First, before you get bindings or a board, make sure they're compatible with each other. Not all bindings fit all boards. If they're both the same brand though you're ok. But the bindings will have a number of holes in them. You simply line them up with the holes on the board, take a phillips screwdriver, and screw them in tight. Not much to it really. It's pretty self evident once you have everything sitting in front of you.

Forum Roost Snowboard

November 8, 2008

Well I don't know what you consider a "regular" board. But what makes a powder board, or a freeride board different are a few things. First, the stance is usually set back an inch or so to put more weight in the back of the board so the front glides up through the powder, and doesn't dig down into it. Sometimes they can be directional boards as well, meaning they're meant to go only one way or not meant to ride switch. Lastly you'll want a longer board than you would a regular one due to having more surface area to stay afloat in the powder.

November 8, 2008

Well it depends on a few things. First, the type of riding you like to do. The longer boards will float over the powder better and be more stable while the shorter ones will be easier to control in the terrain park and depending on you skill level, on the slope as well. I would probably go with the 152, considering it's not much of a change from what you're used to already, (just 2cm longer) and it'll be a little more stable for you.

This certainly isn't the warmest jacket out there but should keep you plenty warm most of the time. And for those extra cold nasty days, a layer or two underneath and you would be set to go. For your MA winters, a review down below says it keeps her warm for "95% of Boston's winter." And at 33 reviews and counting, with an average of 4/5 stars, I'd say you're pretty safe getting this. Keep in mind though that it's not waterproof and has no down in it for warmth which is why I state at the beginning that there's certainly warmer jackets out there.

Lib Technologies TRS BTX Snowboard

November 6, 2008

Tough decision in my opinion. Both are great boards. Here's what to consider. To directly answer your question, the Custom X is more of the "all mountain" board which is what you described as wanting to do. However, money wise the TRS BTX is $160 cheaper AND it has some pretty nice awards backing it. Also, if it matters to you, with the Burton Custom X, you have no control over what color of board you'll get. So if I were you, I'd probably go with the Lib Tech. Both are great boards though, you won't be disappointed with either.

Kahtoola MICROspike Traction System

November 6, 2008

It will definately improve your traction. They certainly aren't going to grip like some of the other nicer crimpons on this site, but you shouldn't have any problem walking without sliding. The spikes on these still grip fairly well. If you're looking into more of a long journey/hike you might think about looking into something that is more permanent. But the nice thing about these is their versatility. They can be taken on and off without any hassle, and also used on different shoes.

As far as brands go, most all companies make a decent terrain park board. Anything you can buy on this site is typically pretty good. Just keep in mind, you get what you pay for. The more $$$, generally the better the board. If you're looking for a good park board make sure the description says its a "freestyle" board. This Forum board above would be great for the park.

I don't know that a scraper really needs to be reviewed, but I guess in case you're curious, I have one of these and it works fine. I personally like the triangular shape, it's easier for me to hold, and fits more compact in storage. It also has the little groove on one of the sides to scrape the wax off the edge of your board.

Riding hard means you don't just stay on the white fluffy stuff. You're out boarding multiple times a week, hitting rails, ramps, pipes, logs, and the occasional pain in the butt rock that's sticking up through through the snow. It's like driving your car like grandma, or driving it like a street racer. Grandma's car is going to hold up longer.

Burton Clash Snowboard

November 3, 2008

Well it depends on how much you plan on progressing and of course how much you're willing to spend. If you want to get really good, and have the money, I would invest in a nicer board that won't hold you back as you progress. If you're just gonna go once or twice a year, you can cut back and get a cheaper one. Just use the basic rule of thumb, that you get what you pay for. So normally, the more expensive, the nicer the board. With you being 110 pounds you need a board somewhere in the range of 140-147cm. Depending on what type of boarding you like to do. If you're going to be in the park all the time doing tricks, aim to the shorter end. If you like the backcountry and all powder, then shoot closer to the 147. If you like both, obviously you'd be somewhere inbetween (143, 144) If you're still growing, factor in that in as well. So if you're stuck between two sizes, go with the bigger one. As far as what board to get, this site sells pretty good snowboards. You can't really go wrong with much on here. Read some reviews, find the one you like that looks good and matches your size needs, and go for it!

Well, a lens can actually have both. You can have iridium lenses that aren't polarized, and polarized lens's that also have an iridium coating. Polarized lenses block glare that is magnified by flat surfaces like water and pavement. So basically they eliminate glare, haze, and distortion. Adding an iridium coating helps to reduce even more glare and improve depth perception.

Burton Gig Bag

I have a Burton Wheelie Locker which is just slightly bigger and could fit two boards with bindings in it if I wanted to. However I never would do this though because of the way you'd have to pack them to fit. It'd be risking damaging my board and/or bindings. Now in your case, with you son's smaller board (130cm) his bindings shouldn't fall onto the same place as yours do on the board. So its quite possible you could pack both in and still be ok. Worst case scenerio, you just take a screwdriver and 2 mins of your time to remove one set of bindings. It's not a big deal.

height, weight and riding style are factors. the bigger and heavier someone is the larger the board. Freestyle means he would hit the terrain park more often, freeride means he would like to fly down the mountain on powder days. If he likes both, just go with something in the middle.

Burton Wheelie Locker

Burton Wheelie Locker

Rating for this product: 4 October 24, 2008

The Burton Wheelie Locker can hold every bit of your collection. Multiple boards, clothing, accessories, it's all going to fit. I tested it out first thing I got mine. I was able to fit in two boards (without bindings), a board with my bindings, two coats, two pairs of pants, boots, two pairs of gloves, two goggles, a beanie, iron, wax, scraper, and random tools. Did I mention there was room to spare??
The bag has multiple zipper pockets inside with mesh lining, two removeable bags for your boots/bindings, a small bag for your goggles, a tool bag, place for your season pass, and some super smooth wheels to take it through the airport with style. Also, I have a size 156 bag and ride a 158 board, and it still fits. It's snug, but it fits.
One thing some people may not be aware of is that the bag condenses down in size when not in use due to the fact it has no hard backbone. So your snowboard is what keeps it from bending in half when it's in the bag therefore meaning your board is the backbone of the thing.
4 stars because you can only use this bag if you have plenty of room. After all it is meant to take EVERYTHING. So it might be a challenge fitting it into a smaller compact car.

Oakley Crowbar Goggle

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2008

First of all, these are Oakleys, so you can't go wrong. No fogging, great comfort, good quality, and of course good style. I own a pair of these and love them. The lens are crystal clear and you often forget you're wearing them.
To help those who are trying to decide between Crowbars, Wisdoms, and A-Frames hopefully I can help.
First, the A-Frames tend to fit a medium to smaller face. They're definately the smallest of the three. Because of this they also have the least amount of peripherel vision when wearing them. However, if you're face is smaller you probably won't notice this anyways.
The Crowbars and Wisdoms are made for the medium to larger faces. Both have a bigger field of view than the A-Frames but are slightly differently shaped. The Crowbars and A-frames have the typical goggle shape while the Wisdoms have more of a rounded shape towards the bottom. I find that the Crowbars fit tighter around your nose than the Wisdoms do. So if you have a bigger nose I would go with the Wisdoms.
Either way, all three are great goggles, and better yet, if you order from here and they don't fit, you can send them back and change your order without any problem. These guys have GREAT customer service!

As for the lens tents, I have a persimmon lens which shows from the chart to allow 61% light through. These seem to be an all around tent for me. Even on the bright sunny days I can get by and the cloudy days work as well. I have an H.I. Yellow lens for cloudier days and night riding. Anything much darker than 61% would be tough on cloudy days, and anything that allows much more than 61% light would be an eye squinting experience on sunny days.

Either way, all three are great goggles, and better yet, if you order from here and they don't fit, you can send them back and change your order without any problem. These guys have GREAT customer service!

Swix CH Wax

Swix Cera Nova CH Wax

Swix Cera Nova CH Wax

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2008

If $11 bucks seems like too much to pay for wax then I'd take a second look at what Swix has to offer. They are a great company and have a number of top of the line products.
Your board needs wax just like a car needs oil. No wax means your board drys out and the base will become damaged over time. Not to mention you won't be able to fly by your buddies anymore!
Get this stuff, the size chart above tells exactly what wax to use for what temperature, and the case the wax comes in even shows what temperature to set your iron. You can easily get 3 waxings out of one block, and 4 if you apply it efficiently.
Also, I'm a snowboarder, so just because the description talks about skiing, it's obviously made for both.
If you're not sure how to wax your board, check out youtube, they have plenty of how to clips. Heres one.

Smith Holt Audio

Smith Holt Skullcandy Audio Helmet

Smith Holt Skullcandy Audio Helmet

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2008

This helmet is awesome. First of all the sound system in it is great. Skullcandy makes some good speakers with awesome sound.
For those new to an audio helmet the cord plugs into the bottom of your left earpiece and then about 10 inches down has volume control with a clip on it to attach to the top of your coat or shirt. From there the cord continues to plug into your i-pod or mp3 player. It just has a normal headphone jack along w/ a smaller jack for certain cell phones.
As for the helmet itself, I can't complain. I use it mostly for snowboaring. It fits very comfortable and is light enough that I often forget I'm wearing it. It's comes with vents to keep your head from sweating to death but is warm enough that I rarely have to wear a beanie to keep my ear and head warm enough.
As for size, just measure your head and go w/ what the size chart says, it's right on.
One last thing with the speakers. At high speeds you may not be able to hear super well. Let's just say they aren't powerful enough to blow your eardrums, but plenty loud enough to hear unless you're half deaf already or going down the hill in a 40 mph head wind.
I'm completely satisfied.

Smith Holt Helmet

Smith 2008 Holt Helmet

Smith 2008 Holt Helmet

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2008

As you can see, this helmet has a number of reviews with most of them 4 stars or better. That should speak for itself!
But the Smith Holt is awesome. I use it to snowboard in and keep plenty warm with it on, finding only rare occasions that I have to slip on a beanie to keep my ears from getting too chilly.
The thing is light as well. I often times forget I'm even wearing one. And I've also actually tested it out a few times, unfortuntately. It's taken a few beatings from rails and hard packed snow at high speeds and both my head and the helmet came out winners.
If you don't mind spending a few more dollars and want to jam out while you ride I would advise getting the Audio version of this w/ the Skullcandy audio system in it. It's amazing. I originally bought this helmet and then upgraded to make mine into an audio helmet and love it! The sound is amazing. You can check my review on the audio version if that's you're route.
But overall, you can't go wrong with this helmet. Great price, good quality, and no concussions. What more can you ask for?

Sessions Movement, hop on board!

Sessions Movement Pant - Men's

Sessions Movement Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 17, 2008

I bought a pair of these pants for my brother. He wanted a good deal and didn't want to spend too much money. I didn't think I agreed with his purchase but kept quiet and am glad I did because I was wrong. These things are the bomb! He let me try them out and wow! I've worn Burton, and Oakley pants and love them. But let me tell you, Sessions is right up there with them. These pants have a mother load of pockets, and a whopping 4 vents (2 on each leg) for those not so cold days. The fit is slightly baggy, but fits just about true to the size you would normally wear. Warm, comfortable, o so soft, and 10k waterproofing so you're staying dry. Get 'em, you won't regret.

Burton Cartel: The search ends here!

Burton Cartel Snowboard Binding

Burton Cartel Snowboard Binding

Rating for this product: 5 October 17, 2008

If you can afford them, don't the let high price tag scare you away. You won't regret buying these bindings. I first got to see them when my buddy bought some for a gift and was immediately impressed. The whole baseplate is completely padded which is something you don't normally see, but not only is is fully padded, but its freakin soft! The straps are also padded just as much, so cinching in tight is going to feel like you're strapping into a pillow.
I was then 100% sold on them when my buddy bought a pair for himself and let me try them out. wow! I have a pair of Burton Customs and the Cartels made my Customs feel like I bought them at WalMart. The feel with the cushioning on the base, the super soft straps, and the toe cap is amazing. I plan on getting a pair myself or else stealing my friends!
The Burton Cartel......comfort so soft, you may mistake it for a pillow.

Go ahead, take it along, cuz it'll fit!

Burton Wheelie Locker

Burton Wheelie Locker

Rating for this product: 4 September 22, 2008

The Burton Wheelie locker holds it all. Multiple boards (one can have bindings attached), boots, bindings, pants, coat, waxing iron, gloves, etc. This thing has multiple pockets inside and out and even comes with a tool set pocket and a handy little place for your season pass. I have the 156 size, and it will fit my wide 158 snug. I'm not sure you could get much anything bigger in there though. The material is thick, so it could make it through airport abuse, and the wheels and carry handle will get you outta the terminal and on the slopes before everyone else. I gave it four outta five stars because I was thinking there would be a brace or hard backing of some sort, but the only thing that keeps its standing tall is your board. So if it is put through some sort of force thats enough to break your board, its going to break, the bag has no backbone in it. But if you're looking for the bag that holds the most, look no further, it's right here.

Burton Wheelie Locker

September 21, 2008

Actually, it probabaly WILL work. I have a 156 bag and my wide 158 board fits. It's snug, but it fits. I'm guessing if i had a 159, I might be outta luck. So more than likely you're 166 bag will accomodate your 168 board.

If your skis aren't longer than two cm of the size of the bag, you should be ok. As far as fitting everything you want, if you can't get ur board w/ bindings, and skis w/ bindings, along with all your gear...you'd certainaly suprise me. They should fit.

Oakley Avalanche

Oakley Avalanche Lite Jacket - Men's

Oakley Avalanche Lite Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 16, 2008

This jacket RULES!!! I had it all last season and have yet to come across anything better. First, the powder skirt and the little cuffs on the sleeves keep any snow from getting in what so ever. Second, it has pockets pockets pockets! Goggles, water bottles, cameras, Ipod, SEASON PASS HOLDER, cell phone....ya, pretty sure all those fit and more. Buy this, you wont regret it! Did I mention the waterproofing? You'll stay dry as a bone!

Oakley In Focus

Oakley In Focus Pant - Men's

Oakley In Focus Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 16, 2008

You want to stay dry, warm, and have a billion pockets? Then buy these. The In Focus pants are everything you could ask for. 15k waterproofing and fully taped seams. You could probably take these back to the hot tub at the hotel and still stay dry! One thing though, they seem to fit a bit short if you're a taller person. Theyre a regular fit, not baggy, and I'm 6 foot and the larges are ALMOST too short. If you want something a little longer look into the Oakley Behind Enemy Lines. But you can't go wrong with Oakley. They make an amazing product; Pants, Jackets, Goggles, they're all good!
