NAU Vice Blazer - Men's

NAU Vice Blazer - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 21, 2012

Wowzer this is a sharp-looking jacket. Great for around town with a t-shirt under it or can be dressed up with a button-down. The material is remarkable - soft and quiet, feels like cotton but the DWR finish rolls moisture right off it. The over-sized buttons and sleeve cuffs add a covertly-bold and unique look. I'm 6'2" 185lbs and the large is a perfect fit. Highly recommended.

Got this for my girlfriend for camping around Utah. It's exactly what she needs - nothing fancy, just a light that turns on and off and stays put on your head. Inexpensive and perfect.

Warm, light, and super packable. I naturally run pretty hot and with long johns and a wool baselayer, I was comfy all night sleeping in the desert last month.

Lacking in Durability

Sanuk Shore Leave Shoe - Men's

Sanuk Shore Leave Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 April 12, 2012

Comfy shoe for sure and a nice alternative to Sperry's - how-ev-ah - the shoe gets docked a couple points for it's construction. The rubber lower is starting to split between the outsole and the sole. As a whole, both shoes are just getting beat up really quick. I like the style and fit as much as other Sanuks but tread lightly for longevity.

Arc'teryx Acto MX Fleece Hooded Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Acto MX Fleece Hooded Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 12, 2012

In the last month I've ski toured, mountain biked, and camped in this jacket. Breathes better than any layering piece I've ever owned and still blocks wind and moisture. I was weary of the chest pockets at first, but they're much more accessible than traditional side pockets near the hip. At 6'2" 185 lbs, the large is perfect.

Killer shirt - the Thrive material stretches and breathes really nicely. I've worn it mountain biking, hiking, and around camp either on it's own or layered and was comfy the entire time. I'm 6'2" 185lbs and the large is money.

So Good

Hestra Seth Morrison Pro 3-Finger Glove

Hestra Seth Morrison Pro 3-Finger Glove

Rating for this product: 5 February 16, 2012

Put these through the wringer in Jackson over the weekend. Super warm (almost too warm above 30 degrees) and super comfy. The padding throughout the knuckles and top of the hand adds good protection and the leather looks like it's ready to take a beating. Hestra nailed it here integrating the best of gloves with trigger finger dexterity combined with the warmth of mittens.

Crazy Light and Comfy

Smith Vantage Helmet

Smith Vantage Helmet

Rating for this product: 5 November 18, 2011

Can't believe how much lighter this helmet is than my Giro MX10. It's way comfy around the ears and the boa cinch secures the lid perfectly. The zip-in liner for skullcandy drop-ins are awesome because they keep the wires hidden and in place. Two separate venting systems (front, rear) allow you to really customize how much heat to dump from your noggin. Looking forward to a long season with this helmet.

Love these goggles, been a staple in my gear closet for a couple seasons now. Smith stepped up the colorways this year and there's a style for everyone. Lenses are super easy to swap out and you'll never go back to normal frames. Highly recommended.

Second Pair

DAKINE Cobra Glove

DAKINE Cobra Glove

Rating for this product: 5 November 13, 2011

Beat my last pair of Cobras into the ground after about 200 days over three seasons. Loved them enough to snag another pair. Biggest improvement is the definitely the zip-closure on the cuff instead of the velcro which wore out after awhile. Love the warmth in such a low-profile designed glove. Hoping they stay toasty and don't pack out too soon.

Minimalist Design in a Bomber Shell

Patagonia Primo Gore-Tex Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Primo Gore-Tex Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 13, 2011

Finally got the chance to put my Primo through the ringer this weekend. Day one was spent at Solitude in a wet, heavy early season storm. Day two was touring at Alta in the same storm, but more wind and smaller flakes. Both days this shell performed exceptionally well. On the lifts I stayed comfortable and warm layered with my hooded down sweater. While slogging uphill, it kept me dry, shielded me front the wind, and breathed great with only a wool baselayer under it.

The fabric is loud as with most hardshells, but moves without restriction and fits great. The pocket placement is spot-on and the taped seams kept moisture out. The side pockets are also surprisingly roomy - they're not really deep so much as they're tall and wide throughout your core on either side. The collar stands stiff when zipped and wraps above the chin while the hood drapes nicely on the back when not used.

Really can't say enough good things about this jacket. I'm 6'2" 185 lbs and the large fits awesome - loose enough to layer and be comfortable but still practical and not thug-life on the slopes. Got it in the watercress and love the mix of neon steeze and technical performance.

Fun and Versatile

Atomic Bent Chetler Ski

Atomic Bent Chetler Ski

Rating for this product: 4 October 10, 2011

Hopped on a pair of 192s last May at Snowbird on a sneaky pow day. 8-12" off the cirque and choppy, heavy snow down below. Fell in love with these skis when I could slash and not hit bottom. They were light, playful, and surfy. I was also impressed by their carving abilities on the groomers. Hard to believe how super wide skis can still feel quick and responsive edge to edge.

Where I had to dock them a point was in between - "variable snow" (aka most snow). The Bents felt like they were getting thrown around a ton in the chop. Granted it was May, snow was heavy, etc, but they really felt noodley charging unsettled, in-bounds snow at high speeds.

I spent 40+ days on 195 Super 7s prior to this and the metal layer in them allowed me to feel much more confident and stable at high speeds. That said, the Super 7s are MUCH heavier and not as much fun if you love your flippy spinny thingys. The Bents are great skis, just beware if you prefer bombing steeps to buttering pillows.

Been using these all summer for mountain biking and running and they work as advertised. Short of branches snagging the cord and ripping them out when biking, they stay put through any activity. Looking forward to using them when the snow starts to fall.

I wear this jacket 9 months of the year and love it to death. It's perfect for an outer layer on sunny days and even better as a second layer under a shell while storm skiing. I'm 6'2" 185lbs and the large fits perfectly. Easy to wash, super packable, and crazy warm. Highly recommended.

Odd Color Finish

The North Face Cobra Kia Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

The North Face Cobra Kia Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 May 3, 2011

Bought this in red and returned it because the color was off. I thought I would be getting a cool heathered look but it's actually got a strange, almost shiny finish to it which was unexpected from the photo and materials. Might be better looking in the grey, just not my style. Bummer cause the cut and pockets are pretty cool.

Rating for this product: 4 May 3, 2011

Usually. But this shirt is actually pretty sweet. I have it in the white and have seen the green in person which seems a bit toned down compared to the product photos. The pearly snaps and symmetrical chest pockets make the shirt. Runs true to size.

Mountain Khakis Lake Lodge Twill Short - Men's

Mountain Khakis Lake Lodge Twill Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 3, 2011

I'm a solid 34 waist and had to return these for a 36. Maybe I'm used to sagging my shorts or maybe I'm just fat after a long winter of hibernating. Or maybe they just run small. Either way, the kelly green is really good looking and a nice alternative to drab solid-colors if you're not a fan of plaid or patterned shorts.

K2 DarkSide Alpine Ski

April 12, 2011

I would definitely recommend you go with the 188. The rocker will make the ski feel a bit shorter than a normal cambered ski and with your height, you'll want the leverage of a longer ski. I'm slightly smaller than you at 6'2" 185 lbs and any rockered ski below 185 really feels unskiable because it washes out on turns and doesn't provide enough stability at speed.

Black Diamond Ascension Nylon STS Skins

Black Diamond Ascension Nylon STS Skins

Rating for this product: 4 December 8, 2010

First pair of skins and they're doing the trick. My girlfriend bought these for me for Christmas and they held up to my first day touring at Alta no problem. Tip loops and tail clips held just fine.

I got the 140mm for Rossi Super 7s (heavy for trekking, I know, but soooo fun on the way down) and they fit great. Strongly recommend watching the video below before going to town with the cutter if you're uninitiated to the process.

Cool Colors, Run Big

Stoic Synth Ski Sock - 2-Pair

Stoic Synth Ski Sock - 2-Pair

Rating for this product: 4 December 8, 2010

Went skiing with these the other day. Performance-wise, they're great for a thin, synthetic, wicking sock with a little extra padding in key spots.

Only complaint is that they run way big (got the L/XL). I'm 6'2" and before a washing they were half way up my knee when I pulled them on. Not a dealbreaker, just unexpected.

Volkl Bridge Alpine Ski

April 8, 2010

169s are gonna be quicker, 177s are gonna provide a little bit more stability. If you see yourself spending most of your time in the trees and bumps then go shorter.

But if you're (A) still growing (B) want to go faster or (C) will be using these for a one ski quiver, I would recommend the 177s.
Longer is better in my mind.

I owned the 185s for a one ski quiver the last few years and they were everything I could ask for.
