La Sportiva Trango S EVO GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's

November 3, 2010

Have a couple climbs in my new pair, and they're great. Had to tie on my crampons though, since there are no toe welts. So . . . I need new crampons. Looking at BD sabertooth clip. Does anyone know how compatible these are? A good fit? I noticed the heel of the boot did not sit snugly on the heel piece of my petzl vasaks (spirlock, i believe).

Mammut Infinity Climbing Rope - 9.5mm

November 3, 2010

So, to answer my own question, there did seem to be a break in period. After about 5-10 days of light use, the rope softened up noticeably. Now, aside from munter hitches and sloppy coiling, it's very smooth.

Mammut Infinity Climbing Rope - 9.5mm

September 24, 2010

Got this for my first rope, so I have nothing specific to compare it too. It seems to kink/twist a fair amount. Is there a break-in period? Or is it user error?

Line Mothership Ski

Line Mothership Ski

Rating for this product: 4 September 24, 2010

Have only used these in New Zealand. This ski is overkill for the (lack of) snow there. But they were easy to turn and surprisingly carvey, so I had more fun than I expected. Can't wait to use these in some real snow. I hope it snows soon.

Edit: So, I've used them for a whole season now, and they're awesome. Bought them as a pow ski, but they became my everyday ski. The rocker increased quite a bit after breaking in, and the only downside is the weight. I will buy more.

Rossignol Super S7 Ski

September 24, 2010

Dot it! The "reverse sidecut" in the tip can, in fact, create some drag, but this is more of an issue when skiing than touring. Camber profile works fine with skins/skinning. Great BC ski.

I haven't toured on the Super S7. If that's how big you like your ski, then by all means, tour with it. I wouldn't want to carry the metal layer skinning. But if you're going to put Dukes on them anyway, then you might as well go all out.

K2 ObSETHed Alpine Ski

September 24, 2010

Just to make the decision difficult for you, I'll point out that you will be going up in weight a lot. The 179 Seth will be wider and longer than you're used to. Adding the barons to them will be on the heavy side. But they will ski awesomely.

K2 ObSETHed Alpine Ski

September 24, 2010

Depending on what you're used to, you're size relative to the length, and the snow you're on, they might seem a little "floppy" at speed. But that doesn't mean they don't work. It's still a wide, damp platform.

Thule Load Bar Pair

Thule Load Bar Pair

Rating for this product: 4 September 24, 2010

65s were recommended for my van, but there's not much length past the Foot Pack. I would have gotten 78s had I known. Endcaps fell off pretty quick, but it looks better without them. Solid

Also, it bows down slightly. Not sure why.

22 Designs Hammerhead Telemark Binding

22 Designs Hammerhead Telemark Binding

Rating for this product: 5 September 24, 2010

Why would you want to ski anything other than HHs in position 5 with stiffy springs? I don't. I don't tour with them anymore, however. to soften the flex for touring, you can loosen the cables and go to position 1 or even 0. it's tough when they're frozen, and they still don't flex nicely. so i've given up touring with them. but that doesn't keep them from being the best of the best of the best. haven't tried the Axl yet, but it doesn't look like it will compare in terms of skiability.

22 Designs Axl Telemark Binding - DO NOT USE

You don't want releasable bindings. (Maybe if you're concerned about avalanches, but not if you're concerned about being a beginner.)

Jetboil Flash Personal Cooking System

Jetboil Flash Personal Cooking System

Rating for this product: 5 September 23, 2010

to the Classic Jetboil. The improvement is the boil indicator (neat but unnecessary, as Sean said below). But, to disagree with Sean, there are two "improvements" I don't like. First is the large control valve/knob. Yes, it makes cooking easier. The downside is that you have to unscrew the gas from the stove in order to store it (because the valve has to be folded in). With the classic, you can store the gas and stove connected together. Second is the lighter weight neoprene sleeve. Not sure if all the Flashes are like this, but mine is pretty week compared to the classic. If you hold the handle on the sleeve to pour out water, the sleeve slides all around and water spills. So it requires two hands. On the classic, the sleeve is stronger/tighter and allows single-hand pouring. In conclusion, Jetboil is awesome, advantages to each, I prefer the classic.

Oh yeah: the tripod is great but doesn't come with the classic.

Holds 1 liter. And with the indicator, you can boil it full. And with the large control valve, you can turn it off quickly, before it boils over.

Jetboil Classic Personal Cooking System

Jetboil Classic Personal Cooking System

Rating for this product: 5 September 23, 2010

I love my Jetboil. I use it for all my cooking, even while not in the backcountry. Not the lightest setup, but reliable, convenient, and just plain cool. Only issues I've had: the cup cracked after heavy use, but is still usable; and the igniter sometimes takes a few tries, but has never failed completely. Advantages over the newer flash version: stronger neoprene sleeve and no igniter handle. With the flash version (at least the one I have), the neoprene sleeve starts to slide off if you hold only the handle to pour. With the original, I can pour one-handed. As for the igniter, the handle does make it easier to ease, but also means you have to unscrew the gas in order to store. With the original, you can store the gas and stove while connected.
