Suunto Core Altimeter Watch

Suunto Core Altimeter Watch

Rating for this product: 4 June 6, 2009

If the stopwatch would record splits, all my needs would be met. But that said, this thing is surprisingly comfortable for a watch the size of a biscuit. The band is very secure and it's not heavy or hot like you might expect with something this size. The interface is very intuitive. Even if you're more concerned about when to get the rain gear out of the pack than a sudeen whiteout in the Khumbu Icefall, the storm alarm is a handy tool to have. It's also great to play with when the staff meetings drag on way longer than they should.

Pockets matter dammit

Salomon Trail Pro Short - Men's

Salomon Trail Pro Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 June 6, 2009

Would zippered pockets be too much to ask for? These shorts are aces in comfort; they don't chafe on 2 hr+ runs, they dry quickly, and they don't make a swishy noise either. What's vexing are the shallow un-zippered front pockets, which I wouldn't trust with my keys. Sure, there is a small zippered pocket on the side, but while it's good for a gel, a key or an mp3 player will bounce annoyingly in them. There is no small key pocket in the waistband (unlike every other pair of running shorts ever made.) Overall, great shorts if you have other options for carrying essentials.

Mountain Hardwear Conduit SL Bivy

December 9, 2008

I was able to zip my NF down bag into it, but never do so since I have more venting options with nested zippers. Internal condensation is a problem with this bivy. As far as added warmth, I'd say 10-15 degrees max. Too, I avoid using it when full-on rain is expected.

Revised review: durability FAIL

Nathan Elite 1 Pack

Nathan Elite 1 Pack

Rating for this product: 1 November 18, 2008

Ok. So not 10 days after writing the above review, this pack failed catastrophically: The buckle (aka Weak Link) broke for no discernable reason while I was trail running. I wasn't towing a sled or anything, and since I'm only 135 pounds it's unclear what caused it to break. What is clear is that the buckles are sewn-in and cannot be replaced without cutting/re-sewing. I've had this thing for only 3 months. This combination of fragile parts with wasteful (unfixable) design is very disappointing. If you're shopping for other Nathan waist packs, you might want to check this out- particularly the heavier ones.

Nathan Elite 1 Pack

Nathan Elite 1 Pack

Rating for this product: 4 November 4, 2008

This simple bottle carrier is much more comfortable than I expected. Even when the large bottle is full it doesn't bounce or make noise. It's comfortable in hot weather too. I find that it will only carry enough water for runs as long as 90 min or maybe 2hrs. The pocket will hold 3 gels (max), an id, housekey, and emergency beer money. I can't say that I understand what the carabiner clip on the water bottle lid is supposed to do; that seems like unnecessary weight to me. Nonetheless, I usually forget I'm wearing the thing once I start running.

CW-X Pro Tights - Men's

October 27, 2008

What's the comfortable temperature range for running in these tights? I wonder if the insulated version would be too warm.

This thing won't die!

Petzl Zipka Headlamp

Petzl Zipka Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 October 27, 2008

This is one of the best pieces of gear I've purchased in recent memory. I've had the Zipka for about 5 years and have used it nearly daily for something. At first I had doubts about the zip cord, but it has held up fine and shows minimal wear. Neither rain nor -30 degree weather affect it much, and I can wear it while running without any bounce. If this durable little light ever dies, I'll replace it with the Zipka Plus, which is probably the better purchase these days (the Plus didn't exist when I got the original) but I'll do so with a certain degree of sadness. Next to my knife and water bottle, this is one of the most dependable and utilitarian tools I carry.

Black Diamond Raven Ice Axe

Black Diamond Raven Ice Axe

Rating for this product: 5 October 23, 2008

I've used this outstanding tool for winter and alpine endeavors and it has saved my bacon more than once. It provides a comfortable carry, and is light but not insubstantial (read: makes a decent anchor when necessary.) The classic straight shaft makes chopping steps easy, and the pick angle is nice for all-around use. The Raven would make an excellent entry-level axe with it's perfect combination of great price and durability.

Capilene's better

Patagonia Runshade T-Shirt - Short Sleeve - Men's

Patagonia Runshade T-Shirt - Short Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 October 17, 2008

At first, this shirt was awesome; it's comfortable (I have the zipper version) and runs well, and breathes slightly better than capilene 1. However, the fabric is very succeptible to snags. Any thorn, stick, or even velcro will pull the weave out. The odor control is not as effective after only about 500 miles of running, and the pocket, while very handy running, can be a problem underneath a backpack or hydration pack's hip belt. Nice try, but I'll stick with the capilene.

Salomon XT Wings Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Salomon XT Wings Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 17, 2008

These are the most comfortable trail shoes in my experience, and fit great on narrow feet. Great in hot, icy, or wet conditions, they're very light as well. I've retired my first pair after 700+ trail miles, and here's where they wore out: laces fraying against eyelets, sticky tread worn through, and an annoying squeak has developed in one. These would not hold up to much road surface, but rock on almost any other surface

Smart little pack

Osprey Packs Talon 11 Backpack - 600-700cu in

Osprey Packs Talon 11 Backpack - 600-700cu in

Rating for this product: 5 October 17, 2008

I've had this pack for a year now and have yet to find serious fault with it. Ok, so there's more white fabric than I would recommend for outdoor use (shows dirt), but otherwise, this thing rocks. I've used the Talon for biking, dayhiking, and trail running. It's cool on the back, has a sweet suspension, and adjusts intuitively. The gel/mp3 pockets on the shoulder straps are extremely handy.

Comfy but...

Skullcandy Chops Earbud Headphones

Skullcandy Chops Earbud Headphones

Rating for this product: 3 August 28, 2008

These are the most comfortable headphones I've ever run or biked in, hand's down. Very light and adjustable. That said, I have real doubts about the cable's durability at the plug and where it joins the earpieces. The plug didn't want to maintain a tight connection in my MP3 player either, so I only use them for dry-weather conditions. The warranty is uncommonly forgiving though, offering replacement at half-price for any damage due to use, so these are worth a try.
