tube brush too short

CamelBak Hydration Pack Cleaning Kit

CamelBak Hydration Pack Cleaning Kit

Rating for this product: 2 October 31, 2009

Got just the kit with the brushes, since I use a combination of baking soda followed by a couple of drops of bleach for cleaning. Seems like it wouldn't have been so hard to make the tube brush longer than the tube itself, but maybe that is just my petty complaint.

Worth the money

GSI Outdoor Hard Anodized Dutch Oven

GSI Outdoor Hard Anodized Dutch Oven

Rating for this product: 5 October 31, 2009

According to the wife - doesn't weigh 100lb, so even she, being somewhat petite and biceps challenged (and does most of the cooking) can haul it around. From my perspective, the brownies were perfect, and it was easy to clean. The lack of a thick coat of oil afterward also makes it easier to justify tossing in the car. Cast iron is definitely cheaper, but way higher maintenance.

Got to have it

Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Stuff Sack

Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Stuff Sack

Rating for this product: 5 August 26, 2009

It is almost pointless to have the NeoAir and not have the stuff sack. The potential for ruining a NeoAir without the stuff sack is too high, either through exposing it to sharp objects, pinchflat potentials or tweaking the nozzle. It weighs less than an ounce. However, one could theoretically save on money by using a ziplock baggie or something similar, but the manufacturer stuff sack is a guaranteed good way to protect your investment.

Lightweight performer

MSR Exo 2 Titanium Pot

MSR Exo 2 Titanium Pot

Rating for this product: 4 August 26, 2009

The pot fits nicely in the ultralight niche. Upsides are minimal weight and built-in handle and lid. I recommend it strictly for boiling water and/or melting snow. Downsides are small volume, even at 2.4 liters it feels small. Also, titanium is not conducive to any cooking due to its very thin nature and it has led to burned meals. If I'm doing any cooking I also bring a 3 liter aluminum pot for maximum options.

Great pad

Therm-a-Rest Neoair Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest Neoair Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 August 26, 2009

This pad has brought me many nights of restful sleep. The small size and light weight only reinforce it as my sleeping pad of choice. Downsides include potential for leaks and huffing and puffing to inflate. I tend to bring a full length Ridge Rest to keep it off the ground, thereby minimizing popping potential. A fully inflated paid is easy to roll off, so I do about 85% inflation for extreme comfort.

Skimpy pad

Therm-a-Rest Z-Lite Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest Z-Lite Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 3 August 26, 2009

I got a pair of these for my kids but use them myself. Upsides are small folded size, extremely light weight and no slippage when using two of the pads together. Downsides are skimpy/thin feeling of pad despite egg shell carton and the flimsy/tearable feeling at the folding perforations. Downsides are easy to overlook when using two pads, but only one pad is a poor night sleep for me unless the ground is forgiving. My kids don't mind the downsides but I do.

Extreme plushness

ALPS Mountaineering Comfort Series Air Pad

ALPS Mountaineering Comfort Series Air Pad

Rating for this product: 4 August 26, 2009

This pad is second in comfort only to my traveling futon. Ideal for car camping and river trips and anywhere weight and size is not an issue. Downsides are potential for leaks and inflation time of around two minutes of huffing and puffing. Great for headrushes.

Good bag

The North Face Blue Ridge Bx Sleeping Bag: 20-Degree Heatshield

The North Face Blue Ridge Bx Sleeping Bag: 20-Degree Heatshield

Rating for this product: 3 August 26, 2009

I got a pair for my kids (5 & 8). The nylon liner feels cold to them and the bags do not have opposing zippers for zipping them together. Also the zipper only goes about 2/3 the length of the bag. That said, the bags compress smallish and have a durable feel. I recommend bringing warm pjs for the kids.

Perfect summer packing bag..........

Marmot Hydrogen Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Down

Marmot Hydrogen Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 4 August 26, 2009

For going light in the summer/early fall this is a great bag. The interior liner of the bag is extremely comfortable and feels great against the skin. Although, this is a great sleeping bag for a specific situation, I would not recommend this bag if it is your only one. If you only plan to own only one bag, go with something a bit more substantial however, for warm weather light packing, this bag is about as good as it gets.

4 L bag is a Backpackers dream

MSR Dromedary Bags

MSR Dromedary Bags

Rating for this product: 5 August 26, 2009

This is a great bladder for backpacking. I would highly recommend this over a camelback bladder, as it is extremely durable. The bladder has three water access nozzles build into one that will fit almost any filter situation or drinking flow desire. It could be carried on the exterior of your pack or the interior without worries of a leak. I could also double as a pillow in the evening or a sleeping bag heater (add hot water) for a restful cold night. I would highly recommend the 4 L version of this product.

Socks that fit

Backcountry.com Cocona Trail Sock - 3 Pair

Backcountry.com Cocona Trail Sock - 3 Pair

Rating for this product: 4 August 26, 2009

These are great socks for the money. I am a size 12 and the xl fits great, especially after a wash, which is rare with most brands. They are breathable, comfortable, wick well and are fairly durable. Overall a great sock for the money – would highly recommend these socks for any physical activity.

A must have……….

The North Face Base Camp Duffel Bag - 250 - 9070cu in

The North Face Base Camp Duffel Bag - 250 - 9070cu in

Rating for this product: 5 August 26, 2009

Everyone should have at least one of these bags, as I have not seen a better duffel bag with higher quality on the market. The bag is extremely well constructed - bomb proof. I opted for the XL. It is a very large bag, but I would recommend this size if you are into out-door activates and tend to haul around gear. The bag is not “waterproof”, but it is highly water resistant. We used this bag on a recent car camping trip and kept all perishable foods in it during a major rainstorm. All items in the bag stayed dry, but I would not recommend this bag for a river trip.
