Works well, I find best to take battery out before using in the field so you don't accidentally have it turn on in pack or pocket and then have no battery when you want to use it. Also get a class 10 SD card, some functions won't work without it.

Yes I do wear protection. This is not a baggy cut its regular fit. Not sure on length differences. Have a friend close to your height that uses the L more for the tighter fit for ski mountaineering aspects. What I've noticed with him is the cuff is higher up off the boot lower. I weigh 155lbs. Backcountry has a no questions asked return policy. Sounds like your leaning towards the L probably the right call in the end for you.

I use a base layer and the fleece with this jacket everyday during the winter. On cold days I add the down jacket to that combo. When hiking I shed those mid layers to the backpack and open arm vents and main zipper for comfort. The pieces are designed around layering. You just need to learn what works for you on those certain situations. Not sure why the base layer is not sold here. The soft shell is more for spring and warmer days where you would layer appropriately for those days with that piece as well.

Its not a mid layer piece. Like Arthur says about the hood, would be annoying having a hooded mid layer with a hooded jacket. This is a spring or warmer day piece, you could layer with it on colder days as it being and exterior shell. There isn't a powder skirt so you would probably notice that on a powder day.

You can get short cables through the dealer or from fulltiltboots.com. The buckles do slide on a rail system for micro adjusting. The upper cable can be moved into 2 different positions making the cable shorter when room on micro adjuster runs out. As far as tongues, you can get stiffer ones through dealer or fulltiltboots.com Get the largest tongues sold it makes a difference especially on the size you tried on. Thats what I do and wear the same size you have tried on. The larger tongue comes up higher on the shin than the stock one. Heat molding the liners covers most fit issues out of the box. Make sure all adjustments are made before heat molding liners.
Side note on the Drop Kick, it doesn't come with a rear spoiler, which is located on the back top part of the shell, so it sits between shell and liner. This piece adds some higher rear support and takes up minimal space, but some. Also the drop kick liner is a lesser liner in respects to overall density and support compared to the pro liner of the Seth Morrison Pro. The tongue on the Drop kick is a #4 where the Seth Morrison Pro is #8 and you can upgrade easily to a #10 which comes in black.

Best thing to do is a shell size at a shop to know for sure. I am in a 25.5, but in other company boots I wear a 26. The 25.5 is really a 25 in the full tilt. With the moldable liner you get more room in the boot than with a traditional liner allowing me to be in 2 sizes smaller than my street shoe. Whats your street shoe size? Standard rule of thumb in ski boot sizing, one size smaller than your street shoe. If you use a foot bed that will take up some room as well. I don't use custom ones, thin old raichle stock liner foot beds.

Fleece long underwear, there isn't an Oakley bottom in the line up unfortunately and I have no idea why. If its really cold (negatives) and I'm not hiking during the day I'll wear a the thiner past seasons Oakley Bottom as well. Dressing for what your going to be doing in layers it the best thing you can do, and cotton doesn't count as a layer and should not be worn skiing in the winter.

You would need to order shorter cables from the fulltilt site. You can't cut them. After the initial molding you won't lose much of the initial thickness. Remolding after the initial mold will make them roomier each time. The liner does hold up very well to "packing out". Even after a couple 100 days on my boots and they feel like 1st day.

It is the same fit, the chest part of the bib and suspenders are much better. The bib part is lycra. All in all the this bib can be a pant or a bib, since the chest part can zip off. You should be good with a large.

Vibram is helpful, but not as grippy as it is made out to be, I found. If you were concerned with exposure or slipping while hiking a boot pack then you most likely would want to be wearing crampons.

When you say shorter boots do you mean smaller? Best thing to do is do a shell size. This boot comes with an #8 tongue you can upgrade to a #10 that comes in black. I don't know anything about the boots you have. Goto a store and try them on, at least get a shell size, the liners need to be molded to get the proper fit. Also these are narrower than most boots.

These boots are stiff, but can be made stiffer by riveting the cuff to the lower shell, if you really need that. The ski question is a bit odd, Souns like you want a narrow waisted ski for those firm days, maybe something from the race line up.

Have you ever skied a ski in a 189? I'm your size and use 189's, but you may want the 179 since you ski a size close to it. The Rocker does give the illusion of skiing shorter, but the tail rocker is not so much on this ski, a hellbent has way more tail rocker and thats when you really notice that shorter skiing feel. The 179 is the most popular size, if your skiing deep snow and open terrain get the 189, if you ski more technical terrain get the 179.

The #10 tongue obviously is the stiffest, but the boot flexes much differently than the 4 buckle style boots. The cuff has more forward movement than the 4 buckle boots. The boots are pretty much all the same, the tongue flex and liners are the main differences through out the line. So its hard to compare it to other brands stiffness. Find a shop that has them and try them on.

There is a metal loop that you need to spread apart at the boot connection point. The loop stays on the tongue, use a screw driver to spread one side at a time. Its pretty easy to do, just be easy so as not to break the loop from the tongue. You can't put it back on.

How is your shell size? Pull liner, just have toes touching front of boot, stick index finger behind heel and or index plus middle finger. You should have 1 to 1.5 fingers behind your heel.
Trying them on out of the box they should be tight, but you should have your ski sock on and footbed in as well. While molding them they will be even tighter since the liner expands when heated. You should have a toe cap on while doing said molding and have cant adjustments set prior to molding.
Once they cool off. If they still are to tight you can remold again and liner will loose more thickness. Fine tuning with shock thickness helps!
I'm not a boot fitter I just cook my own liners and know what works for me with this shell.

Warmth and waterproofing are similar, having nylon on the heli glove ads less time to waterproof leather. Heli glove has a removable liner, so that can give you some liner choices on the warmth end, but is an extra you'd have to buy.

This boot is not the stiffest boot in the boot world. The tongue on this boot is the stiffest in fulltilt line up. You can get different flex's of tongues to customize your needs to make them softer. Don't be fooled with what I do and thinking I have stiff boots, I use them for their softness, full flex, and foot fit. Stiff race boots are to much for me, you should be fine for resort skiing with these.
