Update on Pro Traxion review

Petzl Pro Traxion Pulley

Petzl Pro Traxion Pulley

Rating for this product: 3 September 10, 2008

Last weekend I was hauling with an 8mm static line using the Pro Traxion and the rope slipped off the pulley jamming between the pulley and the gold colored side. It was a major pain to free the rope after it jammed. I transferred the haul bag on to another line and removed the Traxion from the system (that was the easy part). However once the rope was jammed on the side it was very difficult to open the Traxion. I pounded on the release button to get it to go in, then pounded on one of the plates to rotate the pulley open. The gold side flares out to facilitate the release button. This leaves enough of a gap to allow the rope to jump the pulley. If you use this device,be careful that the device can move around freely and that your direction of pull is always parallel to the haul line on the other side of the pulley.

Works great

Petzl Mini Prusik Minding Pulley

Petzl Mini Prusik Minding Pulley

Rating for this product: 4 September 8, 2008

I use the Petzl Pro Traxion Pulley for hauling and then use the "Petzl Mini Prusik Minding Pulley" for second and third pullies when rigging for 3-to-1 mechanical advantage. The Petzl minis are good for this purpose as they have very high efficiency rating. I am basically using the Mini's for scenario where locking pulley is not needed (no prusik involved)

Ditto of YeahBro's review above. One tip, if you have a long approach (aka halfdome), you may want to add a beefier hip belt(can buy generic hipbelts at REI)

New Reverso not so good for thick rope

Petzl Reverso 3 Belay and Rappel Device

Petzl Reverso 3 Belay and Rappel Device

Rating for this product: 3 September 8, 2008

I am a big fan of auto-locking belay devices - nice to have free hands when belaying the second so I can take photos, eat, and scratch my ass. Warning though, the new reverso does not work well with 11mm rope - it is a push to get an 11mm rope into the new reverso and tends to bind during auto-lock belaying. The old reverso works fine with 11mm
