  • Stomping Grounds:

    Mammoth Lakes, CA.
  • Bio:

I work at the Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort and get around 50 days of skiing in a season. Most of the products i've purchased with Backcountry.com have been for the winter cold. I am very happy with all the equipment and hope it last awhile before needing replacement. The temperatures here get down to double digits in the day but nothing too extreme for any of these products.

The North Face Ski Light Socks - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 2 days ago

I came across these last season window shopping on the internet for an alternative to my old method (thin polypropylene under cotton). Not necessarilly the best choice, so I picked up 8 pairs of these for this coming season.

I have yet to wear them in my ski boots but must say they are plenty warm and comfy hiking around town in my snow boots. There is thin padding in the heal, shin and toes that i'm sure will aid in ski boot comfort and long term wear.

I'll update this review after I get a couple laps in with them.

The North Face Stretch Softwool Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 18, 2009

Well made wool thermo that is comfortable and allows for several more layers with minimal restriction.

Thumb cuffs are a nice additional feature if your size fits your arm length.

'09 (I have purchased another pair for this coming season as the older pair recieved quite a bit of daily use and has shown wear at critical seams.)

Giro 2008 Omen Wireless Audio Helmet

Rating for this product: 5 April 25, 2009

This is the one, (unless you have to have carbon fiber).
Has all the features you'd expect in a top of the line Giro helmet with the added quality and reliability of Motorola bluetooth.
No complaints whatsoever and very satisfied with the performance of both.
I'm wearing POC Lobes and they fit great.
I wanted the best and for $180 "Outlet" price i'm more than satisfied.

POC Lobes Goggle

Rating for this product: 5 March 16, 2009

Ya, everyone asks about them thinking they are "Electric" or "Smith" 'cause the newer styles have little or no visable frame. No one knows where to get 'em cause they are made in Sweden.

I purchased the green lens with around 18% VLT as a starter lens in the middle of the spectrum. Also they are advertised as having more peripherial vision but I found them to be the same as Oakley Wisdom goggles.

Anyways, they gets lots of looks, stares and questions. Tend to fog up like any other goggle if you don't put them on right.

'09 (I have purchased 2 replacement lenses for the 2 extremes of light conditions - Yellow and Blue / mirrior finish. The difference is noticable and well worth the xtra coin. They change out easily in about 1 min flat.)

The North Face Free Thinker II Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 9, 2009

I'm 6'3" @ 220 and bought the XL so I could layer a Nuptse down 700 fill underneath. I wear wool thermos under fleece sweats under the Nuptse and it all fits very comfortably under the shell. Mammoth has had a few really wet snow days through the month of February and the Free Thinker II has shrugged it off as expected. I was also considering the Apogee Down Snorkel II Jacket (steep tech line) but 'glad I went with this shell considering I can layer a bit thinner come spring. Pockets are great and the hood tightens down enough without a helmet to provide ample protection. I'm sure you've read about the other features such as the powder skirt and RECCO system. Even though I've only been in up to my quads deep, it's comforting to have those features for the times I take a nasty spill.

The North Face Pluto Hill Zip Mock Pullover - Men's

January 9, 2009

Hi Laurie, this website usually does a good job with the descriptions and I find the reviews really helpful (since those people aren't trying to sell you anything!). This looks like it's not true "long underwear" but a good layering shirt. I haven't bought this shirt yet but I think it will be a Christmas gift for my boyfriend who lives in the mountains here in Colorado. They also have an outlet site (backcountryoutlet.com). Rupicolous -(This is definitly not an "underwear" item, more like an outer shell. If you want thermo's look at the "middle weight" merino wool products from The North Face.)

The North Face WindStopper High Point Hat

Rating for this product: 5 December 9, 2008

It's true the xtra material on the top makes you look a bit like your ready to be shot out of a cannon but the function of the hat is really good and the form really isn't so bad.

The ear flaps are great for keeping the chill at bay and the draw sting helps keep it in place on windy days.

The North Face Pluto Hill Zip Mock Pullover - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 9, 2008

The material wears a bit stiff but is a high quality top that should take some abuse. Good cut and heat retention with a nice full collar.

Sleeves have the monkeythumb cutouts that can be used if the sleaves are long enough. My arms are just a bit too long to use the cuffs comfortably.

The North Face Power Stretch Glove

Rating for this product: 5 November 18, 2008

I originally bought these to wear in the car until it warmed up.

You probably won't drive with them though because there really isn't any grip.

A decent middleweight glove to help keep the digits toasty. They do absorb moisture and will get wet.

'09 (I have since purchased a pair of the 800 fill mittins and use these as a liner underneath. I have warmth when it's cold and dexterity when I take the mittins off to get technical with equipment.)
