Skijosh.com February Edit

GoPro HD Helmet HERO

September 25, 2010

I am not sure why, but it was hard to find time to edit this season. I have a bit of footage, so over the next few weeks I will be releasing a few edits of me and my friends skiing in Utah. This entire edit was shot with a GoPro HD Hero camera. They are awesome little camera's, I highly suggest you pick one up for yourself.

It has been a while since I have edited, but I threw this together in one afternoon. It turned out fairly well. After watching the footage from February, I think I might be liking the helmet footage more than the chest mounted camera footage. What do you think?

There was supposed to be a ton more footage to come after this, but my RAID 5 drive failed after a BIOS flash and I lost all of my ski footage from March-May including but not limited to: 30 foot cliffs, misty flips, powder nose butters, pillows, and double tomahawks in death chute....yes, double tomahawks in death chute.

Hopefully I can get some cool Mountain Bike and Wakeboarding stuff up here..

man..i am bummed

GoPro Test Powder

GoPro HD Helmet HERO

February 25, 2010

This footage is just from a day at Snowbird UT testing out my new GoPro HD Camera and Chest Mount. I am trying to decide still how much I like the chest mount as compared to the helmet mount. It does allow you to see your skis and the horizon at the same time easier, but also looks weird whenever your arms raise above the level of the camera (dropping a cliff, etc.).

Footage isn't great, mostly because I was testing the camera as well as frame rates. The HD on this camera looks awesome though for sure!

My home network wasn't working when I threw this video together and there were about 10 random songs on my computer, I decided this one was as good as any. If anyone has some cool music that I could throw in an edit sometime let me know, would love some spanish guitar.

More video to come.

P.S. That day at the Bird was awesome! I was testing out the Lib Tech NAS Pow ReCURVE skis. A review will be posted on skijosh.com soon.

Deuter Futura 24 SL Backpack- Women's - 1450cu in

July 11, 2010

This is somewhat embarassing. I borrowed this pack, as I did not want to submerge any of my Alpine Touring packs of this size in water. I accidentally grabbed this pack when I meant to grab a men's version. By the time I figured it out, I was too lazy to swap it out.

The torso was a little bit small (I am 5'10"), I had to open it almost all the way up before it fit me properly.

The hip belt was definitley way to small for me, but I was able to open the strap and make it fit..just not completely properly.

I knew that the bag wasn't waterproof, but it fit a drybag inside fairly easily as well as my 3 liter hydration bladder.

This was a 10 hour hike, so I knew it wasn't going to need to carry a ton, it was a perfect size for a 1 day trip or an overnight SL trip.

Kind of embarrassing to have a women's pack out on the trail, but all in all it worked out fairly well!

Pretty Dope

GoPro HD Helmet HERO

GoPro HD Helmet HERO

Rating for this product: 4 August 14, 2011

I gave this Helmet Camera 4 stars because it is the best helmet camera on the market right now as far as I am concerned. It is not, however, the best potential camera that GoPro could make.

It has better quality footage than any other helmet camera, but its not that durable (I have broken 3), the way they let you mount it all take way too long to set up, they need to make the case close more securely. They should make the sensor larger, they should make the body a perfect square instead of a rectangle (that way you can set it up on the side or on top of your helmet easier). They should put bluetooth in it so that you can stream video to your phone (rather than use a gimmicky LCD screen attached to the back). They should give it 60fps 1080p and 960p video (so that we dont' have to use 720p just to get decent footage).

POC Lobes Goggle

Rating for this product: 4 August 13, 2011

These are really sick goggles.. They fit well with a lot of helmets (especially with the POC helmet). The only reason I gave them 4 instead of 5 stars is because I feel they fog up easier than my Crowbars. Its fine though, I don't wear them on storm days (when there is a higher chance of fogging)..i don't wear them on those days because they are a dark lens.

POC Receptor BUG Helmet

POC Receptor BUG Helmet

Rating for this product: 5 June 15, 2011

I really like this helmet a lot. POC put a lot of R&D into the design of the Receptor Bug and it has paid off. The helmet isn't too bulky, doesn't weigh a ton, but has great protection. I am definitely glad I have been wearing it in a few instances. Works equally well with goggles over the top or under the helmet. I generally prefer the latter. Fits true to size and fits well with both my Oakley Crowbars as well as with my POC lobes.

Rating for this product: 5 June 15, 2011

I used to wear tight under armour under my boardshorts, but sand would get stuck between the liner and my leg and would chaffe. I then started wearing ex-officio boxers because they were polyester/nylon and would dry quickly, but they fell apart. I'm giving these a try now, they breathe well, dry fast, and seem to be holding up well (fingers crossed)

DC Lanai Essential 3 Board Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 June 4, 2011

the design of these shorts is right on the money. While I don't like them as much as my Hurley Phantom's or my Quiksilver Cypher shorts (because the material on these is thicker and not as stretchy), these are still some of my favorite shorts. They do fit a bit small though, my size 34's fit like a 32.5. Luckily I am a size 32, so that means they fit fine. Be careful with sizing.

Hurley Phantom 60 Kings Road Board Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 4, 2011

These are awesome shorts. They have a great fit and fit true to size. I am a 32 and the 32 in these fit great. I could probably wear a 31, but I didn't want to. The green color is AWESOME. The fabric doens't soak up very much water and it dries quickly. I have had very little problems with chaffing in this short. My only real complaint is that the waist tie is supposed to stay tight all the time because the back of the laces are coated in a silicone goo that is supposed to cause the laces to stick together, it doesn't really work so you have to double knot or they will come undone.

Great Shorts

Quiksilver Cypher Demolition Board Short - Men's

Quiksilver Cypher Demolition Board Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 4, 2011

Sweet boardshorts. The dobby DLX fabric feels somewhat cheap and thin, but it actually seems to work. The raised diamond pattern is supposed to keep the shorts from rubbing against your skin. They are also very very thin so they don't get heavy when they are wet. The last time I wore these shorts I had an unexpected run in with a reef shark, but I got away unscathed (I am not claiming that this short helped me in this situation, I just think its a cool story). These don't seem to soak up much water so they dry quickly. Cool shorts. The green + yellow + black is almost jamaica looking.

Weird Material

Oakley Turbocharge Board Short - Men's

Oakley Turbocharge Board Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 June 4, 2011

These boardshorts look AWESOME in the sulphur color. They fit true to size. I am a true 32 and bought these in that size and they fit great.

My only complaint is with the material on the left leg. While the right leg is a normal soft polyester boardshort material, i think they screen printed the blue left left onto the short. This causes the left leg to feel very stiff and kind of rub behind my knee a little bit. It is seeming to get better naturally over time, but it definitely feels strange when the shorts are new. Also, the butt of the sulpher ones is straight up white, which means if you sit down in mud at a waterfall, they will stain brown and it will be hard to get out. But just keep trying, it will eventually wash off.

Get the 185. If you like the 183 Gotama you will really like the length of the 185 JJ. 175 will feel pretty short because of the rocker. The ski doesn't feel as huge as it is..don't get me wrong, it float amazingly welly in pow, but it doesn't feel like you have Hellbents on your feet or anything.

If you feel like your PMgear BRO's or your LibTechs are too short then you could try the 185. If you already like the length of skis you are on, keep in mind that the rocker on this ski will make it feel slightly shorter in some circumstances but the rocker is not a huge impact on this specific ski. So, if you like the length you are currently on, get the 175. This is a matter of total personal preference. Since you are EC, I would suggest 175.

Line Prophet 100 Alpine Ski

September 26, 2010

This is a great ski for charging hard in powder and backcountry conditions. It also chews up and spits out crud without a problem. The ski has a small turn radius so it turns easily but is stiff and responsive enough that it doesn't get sketchy at speeds.

Having said that though, you mentioned you want to ski park with this ski. This ski has a setback sidecut which means your ski will be mounted further back than it would be with a typical all-mountain able to ski in park ski. The ski is also heavier due to its aluminum laminate.

If you were only going to ski this ski outside of the park, I would get the 186. If you want it to also ski in the park..I would get a different ski.

Here are some other skis I would recommend you check out:

http://www.backcountry.com/k2-kung-fujas-alpine-ski

http://www.backcountry.com/volkl-bridge-alpine-ski

http://www.backcountry.com/line-blend-ski-lin0148

These 3 skis will be more playful, lighter, but still good enough to ski powder with. I would atleast check them out.

Line Sir Francis Bacon Ski

September 26, 2010

The SFB will feel slightly softer and less responsive than the B4 did. Having said that though, the SFB is a much fatter ski and is much easier to ski in fresh snow conditions. I would never suggest going to a 172 unless you are only going to be riding this ski in the park or on groomers, which it does not sound like is the case. The longer length will be easier to ski at higher speeds. The reason you would typically go to a shorter ski in a regular camber/regular shape ski is because you are sick of getting your tips caught up all the time and are having a hard time managing the length of the ski. Rocker in the tip helps to combat those troubles, so there is no real reason to get the ski shorter.

Why would you mount the ski center if you don't want to ski it switch. Mount it recommended or maybe +1-2cm depending on your style. Also, I would personally put the FKS binding on it..but thats a matter of personal preference.

Armada JP vs Julien Alpine Ski

September 23, 2010

The JJ changes in 2008/2009. Prior to the start of the 2008 season the ski changed names from JP vs Julien to JJ (which is an acronym). The ski itself is what actually changed though.

The old ski was noticeably softer flexing than the new model. But the biggest change was in its shape.

The old model was a regular sidecut ski with regular camber..and lots of it. The old models dimensions were: 126-103-116. The new model is regular camber underfoot, but tapered tip and tail to give it the effect of reverse sidecut while in powder. The new model is also rockered in the tip and tail, and is much fatter at: 126/ 136/115/133/121

The difference between the 2006 model and the 2008+ models is HUGE..The skis are not the same really at all.

the 10/11 is supposed to be slightly torsionally stiffer than the 08/09 and 09/10 models. The difference is not huge. The ski is essentially the same.

I would personally suggest a 178. The rocker will make the ski shorter than it is, and anything under 173cm is too short for you, especially in pow.

GoPro HD Helmet HERO

Go watch the footage. In my opinion the footage from the VholdR is much worse than from this camera due to the lower quality CMOS sensor which causes the footage to look more jumbled and jittery than with the GoPro. This is especially noticeable when the VholdR is used in a situation where everything in the sides of the field of view are moving at high speeds (such as biking on single track).

It really will come down to personal preference as well as your overall ability. It sounds like you would prefer a 175 while someone else of your exact same stature would prefer a 185. There is no right answer at your specific height and weight.

They used to measure the top of the ski instead of the bottom of the ski, which meant that a 179 was more like a 183 and a 189 was more like a 195...but this year they changed it up and a 179 is about a 179 or 180 and a 189 is more like a 189 or 190.

K2 Revival Ski

September 13, 2010

The Mojo is a great binding. I would aslo suggest the FKS 140 or FKS 180 binding depending on your ability and weight. If you want a super burly binding get the 180, otherwise the 140 will more than suffice and weigh less. The key to a binding like this is that it has almost no height to it, so that you can feel the ski under you better, it has a more natural release so that you don't pre-release and fall just because your ski came off for no reason, and it has a really short mount zone to keep the flex of your ski natural.

Have you considered the Prophet 100 ski? It will charge a lot harder than the Volkl Bridge, and it has a smaller turn radius so turning on groomers is not a problem:

Line Prophet 100 Ski

September 13, 2010

These skis ski completely different from each other.

The Prophet 100 is a fairly stiff (8/10 flex) ski with a ton of sidecut. The ski is stiff enough that it really can charge through most snow conditions, but with its small turn radius it can still hold an edge really well on groomers.

From 4Frnt the ski that the Prophet 100 is most comparable to is the 4Frnt VCT. The VCT though does have less turn radius causing it to want to ski straighter most of the time.

The CRJ is a way dope ski for sure. Quite a bit fatter than the prohpet 100, but also quite a bit softer (maybe 5.5-6/10 flex) and a much longer turn radius. The CRJ also uses taper and rocker. This means that the CRJ wll ski powder a lot better than the Propht 100, but it won't turn as easily on groomers nor will it charge choppy snow as well. I have not yet skied the CRJ though, I have just skied many similar skis and have flex it many many times.

Volkl Gotama Ski

Yes, this would be an awesome AT Ski. The rocker actually helps when blazing trail, the ski isn't too heavy, and you will appreciate having a rockered/fat ski once you get to the top of your line.

There isnt' a ton of surface area for the skins to come into contact with the snow, but I also ride a full rockered ski for A/T. As long as you really make sure you plant your feet well the skins will stick to the snow fine and you won't have a problem.

GoPro Vented Helmet Strap

Rating for this product: 3 September 9, 2010

I find that this is hard to tighten down on your vents well enough to keep your camera completely still. It works well and is more secure than probably a sticky tab that could rip off..but it isn't completely vibration proof. It is good for testing out the camera in new places though.

Yeah, these suck

Skullcandy Smokin' Buds Headphones

Skullcandy Smokin' Buds Headphones

Rating for this product: 1 September 8, 2010

I can't really complain too much that these suck, because I got them for free. But that does not change the fact that they suck. They really do. Mine were black. I can't tell really if they suck because mine were defective, which is why, I guess, that I say they suck. I can't comment on the sound quality of a non-defective pair, since mine were defective. By defective I mean that the volume adjuster on the cord was broken. What does that mean exactly? Well, it means that when I turned the volume bar all the way up, the volume was somewhat normal, yet quiet. When I turned it down, the sound kept playing, but only the bass part. My volume adjuster was turning on and off the treble sounds. This was quite strange and made me somewhat sick to my stomach, so I threw them away.

Skullcandy Lowrider Headphones

Skullcandy Lowrider Headphones

Rating for this product: 3 September 8, 2010

I bought these headphones a few years ago to listen to music while working. They don't have the best sound quality, and the thick foam sitting on your ear keeps the sound somewhat distant. These are, however, lasting much longer than any other skullcandy's I have previously owned. When I say they are lasting much longer, i mean that the sound still works. The plastic protecting the foam, however, is all falling off, and since my foam has white plastic on it, I always have white plastic all over me, and that sometimes might be viewed as being dandruff, which could be somewhat embarrassing. Luckily my self-esteem is high enough that I don't care if people think the white plastic is dandruff, as it is whiter than dandruff and is kind of obvious that is it not dandruff. But still, a person with low self-esteem might have a problem with that.

Not sure why you would buy this binding

Marker Griffon 12 Ski Binding

Marker Griffon 12 Ski Binding

Rating for this product: 2 September 8, 2010

I am not really sure why you would ever consider buying this binding. 1st, for a 12 din binding the elasticity of the spring is very low, which means they pre-release way too often. 2nd, the binding is mostly of plastic construction, which means that it will not hold up very well over the course of its somewhat shortened lifetime. 3rd it is a bulky binding that raises you too high off the ski which causes you to loose the "feel" of the ski. The 16 DIN Jester is a slightly better binding, but if you are going to spend money on these, just buy the Rossignol FKS 14, it is much much much much better.

Sanuk Hybrid Shoe - Men's

Sanuk Hybrid Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 8, 2010

I don't own this shoe, but I have it on my foot right now. I own many pairs of Sanuks, so I am very familiar with their "feel" and "durability". This shoe has a slightly different feel to it than other Sanuk shoes, as it has a little more support under the arch than a traditional Sanuk shoe because of the thicker sole design. Sanuk shoes, and this one included, fit true to size as i typically wear a 10.5 or 11.0 shoe and I prefer a size 11.0 in my Sanuk's. My brother owns this shoe and his one complaint is that he never knows whether or not to wear socks with it, because it looks funny with socks but doesn't provide enough ventilation to keep dry without them.

Reef Fanning Sandal - Men's

Reef Fanning Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 8, 2010

These shoes come in a ton of great colors. They fit well and are very durable. I am used to wearing a flip flop with zero arch support, so when I put these on I am kind of shocked at the feel under my feet. This feel is not a bad thing, just something different that you have to get used to. Some people might say it is better..I would say that is personal preference. The bottle opener does work, although I guess if you were to step in dog poop the dog poop would get stuck in the bottle opener, and then you would get poop on your drink..that would probably suck.

Great Bindings

Rome 390 Snowboard Binding

Rome 390 Snowboard Binding

Rating for this product: 5 September 8, 2010

These really are great bindings. I have the Limited Edition neon color ones, that look way sick on an Artifact board. I am not a great snowboarder, in fact, I am a skier. But I am a somewhat intermediate level snowboarder. These bindings work great for me, they also work great for a beginner, and with a medium flex I am sure they work great for most advanced level park riders as well. They are easy to put on and easy to take off, and they never have released on me.

Fun Board

Rome Artifact Snowboard

Rome Artifact Snowboard

Rating for this product: 5 September 8, 2010

I am not the best snowboarder in the world. In fact I am a skier. I have only snowboarded a handful of times in my life. But this board is really easy to get the hang of. It handles all groomers extremely well. It is pretty poppy. Great for a beginner to get their hands on and ride but still great for an advanced park rider to ride park on all day. It is soft enough that when I ride more off-piste terrain in choppy terrain it doesn't handle that great..but that is not what this board is for, so who cares? Oh, and mine is the 2007 version..not sure how much different it is than this one...I think its basically the same but with 30mm more of effective edge.

Best Touring Binding

Marker Duke 16 Ski Binding

Marker Duke 16 Ski Binding

Rating for this product: 4 September 8, 2010

This is the best touring binding on the market for whoever wants to forget that they are on a touring binding while they are skiing. The binding works okay for uphill, not as seamlessly as some other touring bindings, but it does work. The binding is also heavier than most touring bindings. But really, if you want to get to cool zones, deeper snow, and steeper lines, then you probably don't care about having fun on the way up as well. If you sacrifice a little your descent will be better. Plus, whatever doesn't kill you on the way up will just make you stronger..which is always a good thing. Don't be a girl, just handle it!

The binding is still made by marker, so it is not the most durable binding nor does it have the highest elasticity in its spring, but it is still much more burly than any other touring alternative. Get some!

Just get the Duke..come on

Marker Baron Ski Binding

Marker Baron Ski Binding

Rating for this product: 3 September 8, 2010

I have not used the Baron. But I have seen it many times, and I personally own the Duke. If you are a serious skier that wants a binding that feels like an alpine binding..then why are you even considering the Baron. If you don't want as burly of a binding as the Duke, then why are making yourself carry around as heavy of a binding as the Baron?

The Duke/Baron line does not go uphill as easily as some other touring bindings. The Marker touring line of bindings is still a Marker binding, which means you will still have some pre-release issues, etc. The Duke is barely burly enough to really handle what you want to throw at it. Sometimes I forget I am on a touring binding while I am skiing my Dukes...that is a GREAT thing. No other touring binding will allow you to feel that way.

ProBar Fruition Bar - 12 Pack

This is the #1 best tasting "energy" bar out there. I really think this might be candy. I didn't try one until last week when I was Downhilling at Deer Valley. Someone gave me one and it really was delicious. I actually thought it was so good that I felt bad not offering any to my friends. Upon tasting it they all agreed that it has the best flavor of any bar.

Have had much better...and much worse

Rossignol 2010/11 S7 Koopman Ski

Rossignol 2010/11 S7 Koopman Ski

Rating for this product: 3 September 8, 2010

This ski used to be the epitome of all awesomeness when it first came out. There were much less options in tapered/rockered skis that would still allow you the flexibility to ski in most conditions. Now this ski has relegated itself into more of a powder specific ski based on all of the other better options out there.

Why don't I like this ski as much as the competition?

#1. The ski starts off with a mid-stiff (maybe 7/10 flex), but once you put over 40 or 50 days on it, it softens up substantially, putting it somewhere in the 5/10 flex range. This means that when you first get the ski it will seem to charge fine even in crud, but after a while it will just feel damp and dead.

#2. There is no reason to have as much taper in the tail as this ski has. If Rossignol were to boost the tail dimensions up to 133-135mm and while boosting the waist dimensions up to 122mm, then we would have a pretty ultimate ski setup. It would turn easier on groomers and it would give you a little bit more punch/stability in the tail to rely on. This would also make the swing weight on the ski much more even so that spins off of cliffs and backcountry booters wouldn't feel so strange. It would also allow for easier switch pow landings.

#3 The tip and tail should both feature taper, but that taper should begin slightly earlier, and should give the ski more of a regular sidecut underfoot. This will allow the ski to actually turn better both on groomers as well as on hardpack. It will also allow the ski to surf pow better than it currently does.

This ski used to be great, I still enjoy it, but I can't give it 5 stars anymore as there are so many other skis I would rather be on.

Great for a 12 Din

Look PX 12 Lifter Wide Ski Binding

Look PX 12 Lifter Wide Ski Binding

Rating for this product: 5 September 8, 2010

This is a great binding for the intermediate to advanced skier. It has a great lightweight design, and I recommend it over pretty much any other 12 Din binding on the market. This is due to the high elasticity on the spring, which allows the ski to stay on your foot longer when it does not necessarily need to release. This means that the ski falls off less when it shouldn't, but still falls off when it should. The binding is more durable than most 12 DIN bindings on the market as well.

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 8, 2010

I own the gore-tex version of this shoe, but its fit is exactly the same, so I though i would comment. First..if you are ever going to run in wet environments, get the gore-tex version, it is worth it. 2nd. These shoes fit great. They have a moderate width last, so they fit a wide variety of feet. I usually wear a size 10.5 or 11.0 in my running shoes. In this shoe I am between 10.0 and 10.5, I went with 10.5 so that I would not get toe bang. The rest of the shoe still fits great. You can really tighten them down if you want to due to the quicklace system. I love these shoes!

They have a normal fitting last, not too wide or too narrow, so they do fit a wide variety of feet well.
