The Not-So-Super Hero

Marmot Super Hero Softshell Jacket - Men's

Marmot Super Hero Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 November 13, 2009

I've had my Marmot Super Hero for about a year now, and my relationship with it has been off-and-on ever since I got it. I really love the jacket, but there have always been a few things about it that have made me wish I had never gotten into such a relationship. First of all, the jacket is pretty burly in terms of its construction. With the Windstopper, it's completely windproof (duh), and the fabric itself (especially the shoulders/arms) is very durable. I've never so much as snagged the jacket, even while scrubbing it along entire offwidth chimney pitches. The jacket also looks pretty cool. I have no problem with the collar being too "big", although the jacket is a bit short around the waist, like all Marmot jackets seem to be on me.
That's where the good stuff ends though. The hood on this jacket is absolutely, entirely, and utterly useless to me unless I'm wearing it over a helmet while ice climbing/mountaineering. The single cinch cord around the brim of the HUGE hood is totally insufficient for adjusting the hood to different sizes. What were you thinking Marmot? One more cinch cord around the back of the hood for volume adjustment would change the way I look at, and use, this jacket. The M2 sofshell material, while nice to the touch, is HORRIBLE at doing what a softshell fabric is supposed to do: resist moisture. From the day I got the jacket, I noticed that water very easily penetrated the outer layers of the fabric (the windstopper membrane assists with blocking water from entirely penetrating the jacket though). Water doesn't even bead up on the jacket after stuffing it in a pack even once or twice. I have meticulously washed (Nikwax Techwash) and re-applied DWR to try to improve this, but to no avail. It wouldn't be that big of a deal for the fabric to suck up water like it does... if it would DRY FAST. However, it falls short there too. This material is hands down the slowest drying synthetic garment material I have ever dealt with. After being out in a light drizzle for maybe 15 minutes, the entire jacket will be darkened with moisture, and I have placed the jacket on a coat rack inside, next to a fan, and witnessed it taking FIVE HOURS to become reasonably dry.
Factors like that just make me question what the hell Marmot was thinking. They have to know how poorly this material performs. I am very surprised that no one else has mentioned it. I own two other softshells, both made with Polartec Powershield, and both of them resist water 100X better than this thing, and they literally dry out 12X faster. I can get one of those softshells drenched and it will dry in 30 minutes if not exposed to any further water.
Despite my rambling rant about the Super Hero's downfalls, I still like the jacket when I can where it in the right context. I've enjoyed using it to ice climb in particular, on crisp winter days with powdery snowfall and harsh wind. If those powdery snowflakes turn slush, though, I'm f**ked, and I'll reach straight for my Polartec softies. (BACKCOUNTRY SHIFT and SHIFT WELDER by the way!)

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Men's

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 21, 2009

Just picked this softshell up about a month ago, and of course got a great deal from Backcountry. This is now my favorite of two softshells; my other is the Marmot Superhero. I like the Superhero, but I've had a number of problems with it. The material really isn't water resistant at all on the Superhero, and it takes FOREVER to dry when it does get wet. Also, I wanted to try Powershield for its better breathability than that of the Windstopper softshell in the Superhero. This jacket fits the bill. It is built better than most softshells, made in Canada, and HALF the price! Absolutely perfect for active wear in cold weather. By the way, I'm 6'2", muscular build, and the large fits great. I wouldn't expect to layer anything more than a Capilene 3 or similar under it though.

Backcountry.com Stoic eVent Shell - Men's

August 13, 2009

So I've been looking into buying this eVent shell, mainly because I'm tempted by the material (God knows I don't need another one!). I've owned shells with Gore Paclite, Gore Proshell, and other waterproof/breathable materials in the past, but I'm trying to figure out how to measure how breathable this eVent stuff really is. Can anyone speak as to how it would compare to a garment with, for example, a Windstopper laminate in it? I own the Marmot Superhero softshell, which with a Windstopper laminate bonded to a "softshell" material, has sometimes breathed more like a hardshell than a true softshell. Anyone know how this Stoic eVent Shell would breathe compared to something like that?

Arc'teryx Miura 50 Backpack - 2746-3356cu in

Arc'teryx Miura 50 Backpack - 2746-3356cu in

Rating for this product: 5 March 5, 2009

If you're a trad climber, you'll love this thing! The Miura stands alone when it comes to cragging packs, hands down. The benefits of the rolltop paired with the full-length side zippers can't be overstated! The first time you reach for your massive tangled rack, rope, shoes, and food after shoving them all in this thing you'll wonder how you lived without it. Utterly simple, bomber, BADASS pack. Buy it!

Norrøna Narvik Soft Shell Jacket - Men's

Norrøna Narvik Soft Shell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 26, 2008

I have to add to this thread: The user giving this jacket one star has clearly gone mental. It doesn't even kind of indicate anywhere in the specs that this jacket is supposed to be wind resistant, let alone windproof with Gore Windstopper. My friend has this jacket and I've worn it around, and it's amazing. Great material, great fit, great company. Read the tech specs before you buy next time bruto.

Excellent Midlayer

Marmot Reactor Full-Zip Fleece Jacket - Men's

Marmot Reactor Full-Zip Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 21, 2008

I don't see what all the fuss is about... Others who have reviewed this piece negatively seem to have expected the wrong thing from it. This is an excellent LAYERING piece. No, it doesn't cut wind or keep you warm as an outer layer; that's not what it's supposed to do. I bought mine a bit small, and the tighter fit works excellent for layering underneath my down jacket or softshell. Get it on sale, and you won't find a better layering piece for the price.

Burton Bonded Hooded Jacket - Men's

October 27, 2008

No way chief, this is only a 300 weight fleece. The wind will rip you up through this if you wear it without a shell. The fleece may insulate when wet, but that doesn't mean it will keep YOU dry... in other words, wear a shell!

Patagonia Down Sweater Pullover Hoody - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 4, 2007

This jacket is ridiculously light, packs down small, layers well... and it's warm as hell. I owned the down sweater first, but exchanged it for this because the hood makes it so much warmer.
