Outdoor Research Chaos Insulated Jacket - Men's

Outdoor Research Chaos Insulated Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 14, 2008

I sewed the hood toggle back on, no more problems with that. I've also tried the MH hooded compressor, and the Das Parka, found the Chaos to be superior to both. The Chaos is lighter and more compressible than the Das, warmer and more durable than the compressor, and does a much better job of covering the face while allowing side vision than either.

OK...TO FRAGILE

Mountain Hardwear Hooded Compressor Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Hooded Compressor Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 February 14, 2008

While definitely warmer than it looks, still not quite warm enough for use as a belay jacket. Also, very fragile. While the jacket doesn't claim to be anything but lightweight insulation, a little more durability would make it much more versatile. I brushed lightly against a door frame on my way outside, and it left a large gash in the sleeve. The jacket does look great, so it succeeds as a fashion piece. In usage, it will do best as backup insulation for backpacking or BC skiing. There are better choices for climbing.
Also, the jacket is an entirely separate piece from the Compressor Pants. The pants are more substantial and durable.

Mountain Hardwear Compressor Pant - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Compressor Pant - Men's

Lightweight, compressible, durable, synthetic warmth. Does everything it says it does. Much more durable than the Compressor Jacket.

Warm enough, but...

Outdoor Research Chaos Insulated Jacket - Men's

Outdoor Research Chaos Insulated Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 January 18, 2008

The jacket is warm as promised, and the windstopper fabric has done very well in this frigid, blustery South Dakota. Two complaints: a generous cut is nice for layering over other outerwear, but this jacket is cut really, really big. Too big. Also, the hood toggles are akward to use, and the left side toggle tore out after only a few days light use! Now the hood can't be cinched! I expected better quality from OR.
