Sturdy set of poles

MSR Denali III Trekking Pole - 1 Pair

MSR Denali III Trekking Pole - 1 Pair

Rating for this product: 5 April 14, 2009

These trekkin poles are built to last. They get used on a daily basis on the hard rock and uneven terrain of the Grand Canyon and they will not bend or break. Heed the advice about not pulling the section out too far, it is difficult to fix. And if there is trouble tightening try pulling the section out to the end and tightening it and working your way down til it's fully telescoped. Great poles.

holds water

CamelBak Unbottle Hydration Pack

CamelBak Unbottle Hydration Pack

Rating for this product: 3 April 14, 2009

1. The camelbak will leak out of the bite valve if the valve isn't closed while you are hiking. 2. The water will taste like plastic the first few times you use it, but it does wear off. 3. Buy a valve cover with this to keep dirt from getting in your grill.

waterproof, windproof, not breathable

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 16, 2009

the pros of this jacket are immense. as advertised, this is a very waterproof and windproof jacket. it is number one for rolling up small and tight and stowing in your pack for when needed on long backpacking trips. the cons are that it does not breathe at all. the pitzips help IF you get them open before condensation builds, however opening the pitzips allows water and wind in when conditions get harsh. best performance for the price, but go gore-tex/hyvent etc. if you have the cash.

Light, compact, water resistant

Lafuma X 950 Pro Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Synthetic

Lafuma X 950 Pro Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Synthetic

Rating for this product: 5 February 12, 2009

This bag is very light, and can compact in the stuff sack to about 5x5x5". Both the internal and external shell fabric are water RESISTANT, and most moisture will bead off if it's not pooling, this bag will retain your body heat if it does get wet throughout your trip. Hang dry for a couple hours in the sun in the morning and it should be good. Although it's listed as max user height 6', I believe Lafuma bags run a bit longer; I am 6'3" and fit comfortably lengthwise but this is a rather narrow sleeping bag; nice for retaining heat, not so much if you turn in your sleep. Good choice for fastpacking and sleeping under the stars.

sweet ride on the whole mountain

Burton Custom ICS Snowboard - Wide

Burton Custom ICS Snowboard - Wide

Rating for this product: 4 February 12, 2009

I got this board for hitting jumps and riding backcountry powder, and it doesn't disappoint. it has a good even flex that makes landing on the hardpack and digging into turns in the deep a dream. I wear a sz 12 boot and have had no problem whatsoever with toe drag. I really love having so many options for setting your bindings. living in southern california, conditions change pretty quick, from riding man made icy groomers to our current 2-3 feet in the last 4 days, and being on a budget, I need a board that can do it all and do it conveniently. This board is it.

nice, warm boots, a wee bit snug

Burton Ion Snowboard Boot - Men's

Burton Ion Snowboard Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 12, 2009

these boots will keep your feet warm and dry. hiking up a ridge in 3 feet of fresh? sliding and buttering in the spring slush? no snow or water seepage at all. this is a pretty stiff boot, and it will take a few trips to break them in, but once they're dialed in, they'll give you confidence to launch the booter without worrying about landing on the knuckle. I've put a lot of days in wearing these boots, and haven't had any trouble with the speed lacing system snagging or breaking, and it is very convenient being able to get your boots on or adjusted quickly when it's freezing or blowing or it's your turn on the bizzle.

great light easy to use stove

Jetboil Classic Personal Cooking System

Jetboil Classic Personal Cooking System

Rating for this product: 5 February 12, 2009

this stove is compact and simple. basic twist and light. I have had issues with the auto ignitor, and while I always have an alternative flame source, this stove is easy to take apart and fix, after over a year everything is still working in top shape. I've not had any issues igniting in approx. 30 degree weather, wind, or rain. and it's just as quick as it says. the heat transfer is amazing on this thing, and the adjustable flame makes it easy to get your meal done right. personally I haven't purchased fuel for this outside of the US, but I have seen propane/iso mixes in generic brands in many places that provide outdoor gear in mexico and canada. I would say that the jetboil fuel canisters are good for about 20 meals. a very good choice no matter what your outdoor stove needs, this stove will meet all of them.

good pad

ALPS Mountaineering Lightweight Series Air Pad

ALPS Mountaineering Lightweight Series Air Pad

Rating for this product: 4 February 12, 2009

although you do have to deflate this pad once, then roll it up to deflate it again, it's worth having a lightweight full length pad. I also have to blow air in manually to get it completely inflated, but once again, for the price, this pad is worth it. it is a bit long when rolled up which makes it a task of fitting in a good spot in your pack. good pad for the price.

light 3 season tent

The North Face Tephra 22 Bx Tent 2-Person 3-Season

The North Face Tephra 22 Bx Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 February 11, 2009

this is a great 3 season backpacking tent. the bathtub floor is resilient and keeps moisture and dirt out, but if the fly is in contact with the mesh, condensation will definitely build up overnight. the single vestibule is big enough for one person's pack and muddy boots. it is very simple and easy to set up solo, and is a great one person tent (or two very very close friends). has withstood heavy rain in the appalachians, heavy wind in the sierra nevadas, and there's nothing more peaceful than staring at the stars as you fall asleep on a warm, dry night. great tent all around, even moreso for the price.

Durable, Versatile Pack

The North Face Crestone 60 Backpack - 3350-3950cu in

The North Face Crestone 60 Backpack - 3350-3950cu in

Rating for this product: 5 February 11, 2009

this pack has space for it all and will support your back while you're doing it. comfortable for multi day high mileage hiking once you dial the shoulder and waist straps in. the sleeping bag compartment is very useful. I have a Lafuma sleeping bag thats super small, so I keep food packed there or wet/dirty clothes to keep them separated from my other gear. went bushwhacking through rhododendron in the Smokies, and no rips, tears, busted buckles, or broken anything, which was a small miracle. The material is fairly water resistant and very durable. This is a great simple weekend pack, but has plenty of space to easily organize map and compass in top compartment, a large main compartment with top/bottom/side access, sleeping bag drawcord compartment, and outside pouches for odds and ends. I also like the fact I can remove the waist support, and slide skis in fairly simply for backcountry snow adventures.
