The Patagonia Down Shirt is the latest in Patagonia's lightweight insulation collection, and as far as we know it's the lightest down piece on the market right now. It's truly a shirt - no pockets, but comes with it's own stuff sack. In comparison to Patagonia's Nano Puff, the Down Shirt is half the weight. Feels like nothing when you pick it up or put it on, and is super comfortable to wear. Throw it on over a long sleeve base layer and you're good to go into some pretty chilly temps. The shell fabric is a lightweight nylon that's very durable and abrasion resistant. Just a little bit of 800 fill down gives you great warmth without overheating, and once packed away the shirt takes up practically no room in a pack.

I think you might actually want to go XL unless you're looking for a very trim, more technical fit. I'm 6' 170 and wear a large comfortably, and medium's a bit too small.

The Torrentshell is a great piece to have with you in the mountains in the summer. Fully windproof and fully waterproof it'll help protect you against nasty weather, and chilly temps. Even though it's not insulated it does help keep you warm, and if it gets really chilly a Down Sweater or Nano Puff from Patagonia will provide added insulation and warmth. The Torretnshell is lightweight, and packs in to it's own pocket so it's easy to travel with, and easy to always have in your pack.

Hi Carol,
The Super Cell is a brand new style from Patagonia, and utilizes a very similar Gore Pac Lite Shell as the other piece. I would say having a lighter weight jacket with the same weather protection is the main advantage as the Super Cell definitely holds off rain as well, if not better.

I'm a little biased as the rep, but I've got a Chacabuco pack that incorporates the same zippers as the Fuego here. I've put that pupy through the ringer for sure, packed to the brim, checked at the airport, and definitely some heavy use but haven't had any zipper problems. I'd give it a shot, and if you have any trouble Backcountry and Patagonia both fully stand behind the product for the life of the product.

Great answer Dave. In addition to the differences in shell fabric, the Primo is a 3 layer fabric so it's only the shell, where as the Powder Bowl is a 2 layer with a hung mesh liner on the interior. Both are fully waterproof, the Primo is going to be a little more breathable and the Powder Bowl is going to be a little warmer.

Honestly is sounds like you've got enough layers up top, maybe your bottom half is getting cold? (or your hands?) Check out a Patagonia Capilene 4 Expedition Weight Bottom for added warmth, the top is great too. Or possibly a lightweight synthetic vest, or an insulated shell on top in addition to your other layers.(Patagonia Nano Puff Vest or Patagonia Insulated Powder Bowl Jacket) -20 C is pretty damn chilly for sure and I'd personally need all the warmth I could get while sitting on a chairlift.

Steve,
If durability is a major concern, a great piece to check out is the Patagonia Solar Wind. It's basically a Nano Puff with a Gore Windstopper Soft Shell for the exterior. It offers much greater abrasion and tear resistance than the Micro Puff or Nano Puff who's main goal is lightweight warmth.

Sorry for the slow response! Honestly I think a medium would be the way to go. I don't think it will look too oversized or baggy, and I think you'll be really happy with the warmth of the medium vs the small. The extra length the medium will give you in the sleeves and waist will help keep cold air out. Hope that helps!

The R3 is super breathable, and would be incredibly warm under a 60g primaloft jacket. R3 is basically a beefed up version of the R2, with very similar fleece, but longer fibers for a loftier fabric. They'll both serve the same purpose for sure, just depends on how much warmth you're looking for. (personally I dig the R3)

Great question, definitely one that comes down to personal preference. The fit of the Hi Loft Down Sweater is slightly longer in the body than the regular Down Sweater, giving it more coverage. The Hi Loft is definitely warmer, and a great value if you're purely concerned about warmth. One of the strengths of the regular Down Sweater is it's comfort and versatility since it is so lightweight, but still very warm. It's great to layer underneath a shell for super chilly days, and great on it's own in a wide range of temps and settings. Hope that helps a bit, good luck!

Personally, I've worn the Triolet pants with a 28.0 Tecnica AT boot, which is on the more alpine side of touring boots, with no problem, but never with a full alpine boots.

Ryan,
I think with a nice base layer and a microgrid hoodie you could wear the Down Sweater Hoody into some pretty cold temps - teens I'd say? The Down Sweater is designed to be super light weight, in addition to tear resistant at the same time. So it's not the burliest fabric, but it's got a solid rip stop and can stand up to some abuse.

Jason,
Not sure if anyone who's 6'4" 230 should ever wear a size large, but it might be worth a shot if you want a trim, athletic cut for the Torrentshell. I don't imagine the XL being too big or baggy though, and that would be the size I would typically recommend for someone of your size.
edit - you want might to look at the regular Torrentshell, which is 4 inches shorter and a little more trim in the body than the Parka here

Jim,
You'd have to have a pretty skilled seamstress, but the Torrentshell Pants could most likely be shortened. There's an 8 inch zip at the cuff which might be tricky, but I've heard of people having just about any pant in the Patagonia line hemmed.

The Down Sweater will HELP keep you warm in below freezing weather, but not on it's own. If you've got a nice base layer underneath, and a shell over the top you can be comfy in some pretty chilly temps. Right around freezing or the mid 20's seems to be the lower end of the comfort zone to wear the Down Sweater on it's own.

We're of similar size, and I think you'd be happy with a large for sure. I can almost go XL in this, but don't mind my ski jackets a little baggier. The Primo Down is definitely warm, but does a great job of not overheating you. Most days I could wear just a capilene 3 zip neck underneath it and be fine in some pretty chilly temps. If you're not hiking around a lot, or run a little chilly then a vest, or fleece underneath will be the ticket. The pit zips are nice and big for dumping heat, and the down liner itself is attached to the shell by mesh on the back interior of the jacket, so it helps moves heat when you need it to. And, down is the best at regulating temperature so that helps as well. It's a killer jacket, I'm sure you'll be psyched!

Depending on the length you're looking for in the waist, you could almost go with a size small I think, but the waist would be a little shorter. Medium might be slightly looser fitting, but with plenty of length in the waist. happy birthday!

The Hi-Loft Down Sweater is identical in materials and construction to the regular Down Sweater, with a few small tweaks: there's more down so it's warmer, it's longer and a little roomier in the body, the baffles are wider than the regular Down Sweater. There's approx 50% more down here than a regular Down Sweater. (and the Ftiz Roy Down Hoody is an entirely different beast and is approx 2x warmer again than the Hi-Loft) The other Down Sweater option is the Patagonia Ultralight Down Jacket, which is a lighter, more technical version with a super tough nylon fabric. cheers, hope that helps

for as much as you want to layer the jacket underneath I would say the Nano Puff might be the best bet for you. It's got 60 grams of Primaloft insulation, vs 100 in the Micro Puff, so it will still be nice and warm, but not quite as bukly under your rain coat or shell.

it might depend on how you're planning on wearing it... The DAS is oversized and designed as a belay parka to be thrown on over everything you're wearing, hard shell included. XL though though if you plan on using it as a belay parka and need the extra space. hope that helps, good luck

Good question, tough to answer! Normally I wouldn't recommend a large to someone who is 6'5", but I think you should give it a shot since you're worried about an XL looking bulky. Backcountry's got a killer return policy, and I think it would be worth giving the large R3 a try.

Greg,
Thanks for the question. Personally I think of the Cap 4 Expedition weight as a fleece more than a base layer. If you want true next to skin to layer over, Capilene 3 is the best choice for sure. I wear mine all fall/winter/spring on it's own or layered under an R1 and/or a shell and love it. If you're going somewhere truly nasty then Cap 4 might be for you. It's nice and soft with a brushed interior and a durable weave for the exterior face fabric. Hope that helps!

Good question, I'm sure there will be some additional responses. If you're really concerned about the moisture, a synthetic fill jacket like the Patagonia Nano Puff would do the trick for you. Personally I think the Down Sweater here will work perfectly for you. The Triolet Jacket is the beefiest shell in Patagonia's current line-up and would be a sweet counterpart to a Down Sweater. They're a bit pricier, but if you check out the Ultralight Down Jacket, Shirt, or Hoody from Patagonia they use a different shell material that is lighter weight and more durable than the Down Sweater featured here. If durability is a big concern those are definitely the way to go, they've proven to be the most durable of Patagonia's insulated jackets.

nice work on seeking out Patagonia's "tall fit" ski shell. Normally I'd recommend a medium for your size, unless you want quite a bit of a looser fit. Edub,
Thanks for the question. I think this would be a good winter pack for you. I'm assuming Denalis are snowshoes? Or trekking poles? The Atacama pack here isn't the most technical pack, but for day hikes on either dirt or snow it's a great option for the price. Snowshoes or poles could definitely strap to the back, and as long as you don't have too heavy of a load the chest and waist strap will work well to stabilize things. Hope that helps.

The pitzip/pocket combo is tough to describe actually. Looks and zips like a normal pit zip, but the mesh in side opens to more of a pocket and allows you to put your hands in or carry a few things. I'll see if I can take a picture that shows it well. Pretty cool design actually, definitely on the minimalist side, but works to keep your hands out of the elements or carry along some food, keys, etc.

Unfortunately for the cinch cord crowd the R4 has not been redesigned for the Fall 11 model. The designers are constantly taking in feedback from all angles, but not every item can be redesigned each season, and the entire Regulator series tends to be re-done all at once, and wasn't slated for Fall 11. Wish I had a better answer for you. (it's still a pretty killer jacket in my opinion)

Man, the warmth is totally subjective - I mentioned to someone from Patagonia that I responded that the Down Shirt was 2/3's as warm as the Nano Puff and they said they think they're equal in warmth. I think the discrepancy is how down wears vs Synthetic... Down is so comfortable in a variety of temperatures so although you might not be cold in it, you wouldn't perceive yourself as being hot either - while with the synthetic is traps the heat differently
The Down Sweater is definitely warmer than the Nano Puff, and the Special Edition Down Sweater is a little warmer than the regular Down Sweater. So on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the Fitz Roy Down Hoody, maybe the SE Down Sweater is at 8.5, Down Sweater an 8, Nano Puff is a 6, and Down Shirt is a 5. ???

Tough call! I would have a rough time telling anyone who's interested in buying a Down Shirt not to buy one - it's probably the coolest thing Patagonia is making right now. And on the other hand the Special Edition Down sweater is a kick ass piece in it's own right and this is the last season it will ever be available. Soooo... for your personal kit seems like maybe the SE Down Sweater would be provide a nice different option for when you leave your Nano Puff at home? You'll definitely love the Down Shirt though and wear it all the time.

The Nano Puff Hoody uses 60 grams of Primaloft One insulation for the entire jacket. (Primalot One is the best synthetic insulation on the market) It uses a DWR coated lightweight recycled poly shell for the exterior and interior of the jacket, and is super packable. The hood is a pretty cool design as well - minimalist while still be warm and easy to use.
The atom lt has 100 grams of synthetic insulation for the arms and body, and has stretch panels under the arms, as well as nylon for the exterior shell. The Atom LT might be more comparable to the Patagonia Micro Puff, as they both use 100 grams of insulation.
Go Nano Puff Hoody - you'll be stoked!

Hi Wendy,
The Rain Shadow is designed to be a lightweight shell, and does not have a fleece or mesh liner. I would call it somewhat warm though since it fully blocks the wind, and if you layer a base layer or even a light fleece the Rain Shadow will keep you pretty warm. hope that helps!

Actually, H2NO is a PTFE/waterproof breathable membrane, not a PU coating. There is a DWR coating on the exterior face fabric for additional water repellancy. H2No performs as good or better than any corresponding Gore-tex piece for breathability of waterproofness.

TNW,
The Inulated Outskirts is a killer jacket, and no need to worry on the H2No vs Gore. Patagonia fully guarantees the waterproofness and every aspect of the garment, and the H2No used here stacks up just fine against the gnarliest storm days. Prima Loft One is definitely a step-up from Prima Loft Sport, and will perform better and be more comfortable. Patagonia hasn't found Recco to be worth the extra cost as it hasn't really been proven to be an effective (live) rescue aid. The Insulated Outskirts is my jacket of choice, and I got a chance to ski it in most of last season. It did great in all different conditions -- can't wait to get it out again for another season soon. Hope this helps!

The Rubicon pants are a pretty burly fabric, but I'd say they're still jib friendly. Unless you're wearing a base layer that's not super smooth, you'll have no problem with the Rubicon Pants restricting movement. The Pataognia Snowshot Pant is another one to consider as well...

The Nano Storm is a great ski jacket, and a great all around winter jacket. It's a hybrid of two of Patagonia's best selling jackets: the Torrentshell Rain Jacket, and the Nano Puff lightweight insulated jacket. It will keep you warm in some very chilly temps, and not look or feel bulky on. Compared to other waterproof insulated jackets out there you're getting a lot for your money at $299 for the Nano storm. I think the size medium here would probably give you a good fit as well. Large would work, but might add a little bulk in the sleeves and waist that it sounds like you might not be looking for. hope that helps!

Hi again Diane, all Capilene is super quick drying and was pretty much the original dry wicking material. I like Capilene 3 mostly for winter conditions under my ski pants, in temps under 50 degrees. Capilene bottoms are designed as base layer, and might not be super stylish, but could be worn on their own. Maybe only in the backcountry though :) Capilene 1 is great when worn under jeans or hiking pants since it's very smooth and doesn't bunch up, and will stlil add a good boost of added warmth.

Really depends how you want to wear the Down Sweater. I'm 6' 170 and large is like a casual hoody fit that I can throw a fleece underneath, while medium is pretty trim and I would only wear a base layer or shirt with it. If I'm going to wear a Down Sweater when it's really cold I actually like the bigger size since there's more waist coverage and length in the sleeves to keep the cold out. Haven't really had a problem losing heat due to it being too baggy unless I'm wearing a t-shirt. The tighter fit's definitely comfortable too and has good warmth when it's snug to the body. Hope that helps more than it confuses?
I'm not super familiar with the Catalyst fit, tried to find one to try on but no one's stocking it near me currently. I do feel like the Down Sweater would be considered an Alpine Fit in the medium for me. Nice, good question actually. The Down Sweater Hoody and the TNF catalyst are definitely very similar pieces. The Down Sweater here uses a 100% recycled poly shell, vs nylon for the catalyst. Great fit, super warm, still packs down very small, and always much warmer than I expect it to be for how light it is. Nicole,
Small should fit you ok if you're going to layer, the sleeves might be a touch long though. Honestly the Primo Down is so warm you really don't need to layer much more than a base layer and maybe a lightweight fleece underneath, even if you run reaaally cold.

The Runshade fabric is my favorite from Patagonia for running and biking, and honestly it does well at both keeping you warm and cool. It's surprisingly cool in warm weather, and wicks and dries sweat away quickly. It's also a nice top when it's cool as well, and layers well underneath a shell.

Small might not be that far off if the only problem with the R1 full-zip was the length. The R1 Hoody is designed to be quite a bit longer than the other R1 Jackets. The Hoody is slightly slimmer fitting though so depending on your upper body size and the fit you're looking for it could be a little snug - length should be good though, or more mediums are definitely on their way shortly I'd guess. Hope that helps

Kylie,
This would be a great travel pant for your trip that doesn't look like a ski pant, but would still do ok if you go skiing. You might want to check out the Patagonia Rock Guide Pant as well that uses the same soft shell material but is a little more of a casual pant.

Limited breathability is a good description of what the DAS Parka offers for sure, and it would be perfect for chilly summit mornings. And it would be nice and cozy to put on when you're chilled to the bone. Sizewise I might go XL if you're going to have 3 layers on underneath. Large would be an ok fit, but might limit mobility when you really layer up.

the Ascentionist and the Stretch Ascent offer similar stretch for mobility, and a similar fit. The Stretch Ascent is going to perform better in wet weather conditions since it's a hardshell with H2No waterproofing, and the Ascentionist is going to be more breathable since it's a soft shell, but does have a great DWR coating and does well in snowy conditions.

The Traverse Jacket uses a slightly lighter weight fabric than the Simple Guide (4.7oz vs 6.1oz), and has a little more stretch. Both jackets honestly would be great for your intended uses - consider the fabric weights to help your decision? Personally for cycling I prefer the slimmer fit of the Traverse Jacket, and it packs down super small when you need to stuff it in a pack or jersey pocket. The Simple Guide is a little more casual styling and would be my choice as more of a hiking and around town jacket.

The Primo Down Jacket is similar in warmth to the Insulated Powder Bowl, but is more comfortable and has a greater temperature range since it's got down as the insulation, so you'll won't overheat as quickly, and it will keep you warmer in the coldest temps. Insulated coats don't breathe incredibly well since there's a layer of insulation between your body and the outer shell, so if breathability is a concern go for the Powder Bowl. If it's between the Primo Down and the Ins Powder Bowl go Primo Down for sure - one of the sweetest ski jackets ever.

Check out the Patagonia R3 Jacket. Still breathable and packable, but has a denser face fabric than the R2 and is a little heavier weight fleece. Don't rule out the Nano Puff thought, it'd be pretty sweet for a night skiing layer, it would definitely be warmer than the R2.

Honestly it does pretty well in wet conditions. The high pile fleece repels water really well, and is a fairly dense fabric to keep the moisture our, and the windproof membrane gives it a little something as well. A buddy of mine was out in dense wet snow all day, and by the end of the day it was just coming through the shoulder seams a bit. Definitely more to the R4 than your average fleece

The Fitz Roy Down Hoody is very, very warm - as warm or warmer than the Fitz Roy Jacket. The nicer down used in the hoody is more comfortable, and has a greater temperature range. The shell fabric is very durable for how light it is, and the whole jacket packs down really small.

Yep, the Nano Puff is quite a bit warmer than the R2 Jacket. The Prima Loft insulation, and the DWR coating on the shell insulate and block the wind a lot better than the R2 fleece. R2 is still a great mid weight jacket, but I can't say enough good things about the Nano Puff, I practically live in mine all winter around the house and in the mountains

Daniel,
From your height, weight, and waist measurement I would initially have recommended the medium. The Capilene 3 Bottoms aren't designed to be completely form fitting, and will still function well if they're a little loose. Nothing wrong with sizing down for a tighter fit, but if that medium's comfortable I'd say stick with it.

Kai,
The Primo Flash is a 3 layer, while the Powder Bowl here is a 2 layer w/a hung mesh lining. Both excel at waterproof protection, while the Primo will be slightly more breathable due to the 3 layer construction. Primo's a little lighterweight, and the Powder Bowl offers a little bit of insulation, and is a heavier shell fabric. For a true resort skiing jacket go Powder Bowl, and if you're out in the backcountry hiking a lot, or are looking for a lighter, tehcnical shell go Primo.

Snowman, your observations are right on the money -- the Rubicon Rider isn't designed to be a fully waterproof piece. The heavier fabric is full H2No and waterproof, w/ the Patagonia Deluge DWR for the rest of the jacket. Definitely good enough for the drier Boulder and Colorado winter conditions. If you're out in the wet Northeast weather all day you might want a fully waterproof jacket, but the Rubicon Ride is ok in wet snow and light rain for shorter periods of time. The good news is that since it's not down if it does wet out the synthetic Thermo Green insulation will still keep you warm.

Tommy, the Down Sweater is a great layering option if you're looking for the warmest possible combination. It'll keep you warm in the coldest of conditions, and be a great warm jacket on it's own. The R3 is also warm, but provides slightly less warmth and is more breathable and will be a better option if you do a lot of hiking or traversing and heat up often. The Lightweight R4 is going to be warmer overall because it's totally windproof, except for the R1 panels you mentioned. R3 is definitely more breahtable. JCN, the Primo Jacket ranks high on the amazingness scale. I've got a large in the green oasis color and I am super stoked on it. Bomber construction, great features, and a killer fit. It's truly a regular fit, enough room to layer, but not too baggy. I'd base your sizing decision on how much you want to layer underneath and how loosely you like your jackets too fit. I don't layer a ton, but like a slightly looser fit so I'm in a large. go for it, you'll be stoked for sure.

I wear a 34 in other Patagonia technical as well as casual pants and a 34 in the Backcountry Guide Pant is perfect for me. I do tend to size most of my pants up slightly, as my actual waist size is closer to a 32. There's plenty of room to layer a piece of two of long underwear. They're a mid-weight softshell with and 8.6 oz fabric and a slight brushed lining inside.

Meg, the Patagonia Rock Guide pant would work well for xc skiing, also see the Alpine Guide Softshell Pant or the Patagonia Backcountry guide pant. Those last two options have more of an elastic cuff to keep snow out, and are still a breathable and water resistant soft shell pant.

One of Capilene's attributes over wool is definitely it's great durability. Definitely machine dryable and will last forever like mentioned below. However don't discount Capilene as that much cooler than wool. There are definitely some wool pieces that are warmer than Capilene, but this Capilene 4 bottom is very very warm!

Catherine,
yes, the hood for the Downtown Loft Parka is also down filled and very warm although it does not have a cinch cord. There are no inner cuffs, just a simple clean cuff. The zipper goes almost all the way down - stops about 4 inches from the bottom and is a 2 way zip if you want to have the bottom more open. The snaps also go the same length so you've got double reinforcement for warmth when it gets nasty. Let me know what size you'd like the center back length for and I can get back to you.

Capilene 2 has a more open weave for the fabric, and is a lightweight, quicker drying alternative to Capilene 3. Cap 3 is a great mid-weight, and makes for a super versatile layer. Depending how cold it is where you run during the autumn you might want to go Cap 3. probably 50 degrees and above is when I'd where Cap 2 on it's own, and Cap 3 could be worn into the upper 30's or so on it's own if you're moving.
As for the fit, Seagrass/Wildwood isn't the best representation. It's an athletic cut, but not that drastic.

I'll toss in a second vote for a large Down Sweater based on your measurements. Still won't be bulky or oversized, and I think you'll be happy with the additional length and room in the chest. I wouldn't worry about overheating with this thing on it's own, the temperature range is awesome. I run warm also, and when it's cold I've got to be moving quite a bit to take this off. And if it's super nasty out you'll love having this under your hard shell, tough to beat. It's definitely the perfect jacket for what you're looking for, and as for a hard shell I would recommend the Patagonia Shelter Stone. For freezing rain or wet snow it's one of the best out there. (I'd shoot for a large there as well). It's got pitzips and will keep you dry in the worst conditions a New York winter can throw at it. Hope this helps!

The hood on the Winter Sun Jacket is a fixed hood and not detachable. This jacket would do alright in light rain, but like other soft shells out there it's not really meant to be worn in a downpour. Caroline,
Both jackets are great and offer similar warmth, but the Micro Puff might take the edge and be slightly warmer. Both have a recycled poly shell w/ a great DWR coating to protect from wind and water, what sets them apart is the fill on the inside. This is the first year the Micro Puff has had Prima Loft, which is amazing synthetic insulation. Warms up like an electric blanket when you get moving, and keeps you warm even when it gets wet. The 800 fill power down in the Down Sweater is some of the highest quality down, and is the most comfortable and versatile insulation offered.

The R3 and the Retro X are going to be similar in warmth, but the Retro X is is windproof, so when things get nasty it will be the warmer piece, but the R3 is no slouch in cold weather on its own. Jonathan,
I'm 6'1" 170 and very stoked on my large, I couldn't wear a medium. I think if you consistently wear a large in the Patagonia Capilene you'll be happy with a large Nano Puff. Also there's some room to layer, but I've never worn more than a piece or two of capilene or wool underneath mine.

The Rain Shadow is a great jacket, and should provide more waterproofing, and breathability than the Oracle. Patagonia jackets feature an H2No waterproof/breathable membrane that tests out at a minimum of ~33k. All Patagonia shells with H2No meet the military standard of 45 PSI (a slightly different rating than th traditional "mm" rating) Patagonia just says that they are waterproof and breathable, period. It's backed up with the unconditional Iron Clad guarantee so you can't go wrong.

Two of my favorite pieces to layer over the Down Sweater are the Patagonia Stretch Element, or Stretch Ascent jackets. Both are awesome waterproof hard shells, with a little bit of stretch to them so they move well with you. For the most bomber, waterproof option check out the Patagonia Shelter Stone. Having any of those over a Down Sweater would be a very, very warm combination.

The Primo Down Jacket is one of the warmest jackets out there that also offers a fully wind/waterproof and breathable shell. I've worn my Primo Down in some really cold and nasty conditions, and it keeps me warmer than any other jacket I've worn. If you were to layer a Patagonia Merino 3 Zip Neck and a either a Patagonia R1 or R2 Jacket under this you would be very, very warm.

The Winter Sun and Ice Field are similar jackets - the first is a soft shell, and the second, the Ice Field, is a hard shell. The Winter Sun will breath better, and the Ice Field will protect against wind and water better. cap 1 or 2 tend to be the quickest drying usually since they're the lightest of the capilene fabrics. Cap 4 might do well for you though, it's got an open grid texture on the interior of the fabric that moves moisture really well. If you need to layer I would actually put a Cap 4 or R1 over the Cap 1, 2, or 3, it would help move the moisture even better and hopefully keep you drier.

I think this would be great for your bike commute even in heavy rain. The seams are lap glued so there's nowhere for the water to make it through there, and the soft shell itself along with it's DWR coating do very well against the water. I ski in this piece in Utah and it hasn't wetted out yet even in the heaviest of snow all day.
edit/addition: you'll never have to retreat the DWR on this jacket. The best way to restore it is to be sure to wash it somewhat regularly, and then to dry it on medium heat. The DWR coating is similar to a wax, so the heat of the drier redistributes it across the jacket and it will be good as new.

Patagonia doesn't publish specific h2no w/b properties, but here's the low down...Patagonia's fabric lab uses a different system to measure w/b at their fabric lab in house in Ventura. Rather than the traditional mm test, they use a psi test which shoots pressurized water or air through the fabric. All H2no tests out to a minimum of 45 psi, which roughly translates to a minimum 30,000 mm for any garment with the h2no membrane. So rather than translate all that, it's more effective just to say that this jacket is waterproof and breathable. And another aspect of this test is that it's done AFTER the piece goes through a killer wash, basically a 24 hour vigorous wash cycle, to simulate several washings and years of use.

2 pairs of skis for sure with all your gear, possibly 3 depending on the size. The pockets in the top are nice and roomy for everything, and there are straps to hold down the skis and poles in the main compartment

poly/capilene would be the best for your use since it dries so much faster than merino. Capilene 1 bottom is the ticket for sure.

I think a medium would work fine, the legs are a little longer in this pant than other Patagonia pants.

this piece is several times better than anything from under armour. Quality of fabric and construction are incomparable, and the recycled content is an added bonus. This piece will be way more comfortable and last longer for sure

I think these would work well for you, or even the R1 pants might be a better option. The R1 is right in between a pant and a tight so it can be layered, or worn on it's own.

It's not exactly waterproof, but I would expect it to keep your laptop and belongings safe and dry while getting to work in anything other than a torrential down pour.

overall the polartec would be a little warmer, Capilene 4 however is lighter and more packable. It layers very well, and will provide a good combo of warmth and moisture management for high activity sports
