Patagonia Ascensionist Softshell Jacket - Men's

I love this jacket for a lightweight ski piece, and my go to touring jacket. Super lightweight, durable, and blocks wind and moisture really well.

Patagonia Nano Puff Pullover Insulated Jacket - Men's
2 days ago
Check out the Patagonia R3 Jacket. Still breathable and packable, but has a denser face fabric than the R2 and is a little heavier weight fleece. Don't rule out the Nano Puff thought, it'd be pretty sweet for a night skiing layer, it would definitely be warmer than the R2.

Patagonia R4 Fleece Jacket - Men's
Honestly it does pretty well in wet conditions. The high pile fleece repels water really well, and is a fairly dense fabric to keep the moisture our, and the windproof membrane gives it a little something as well. A buddy of mine was out in dense wet snow all day, and by the end of the day it was just coming through the shoulder seams a bit. Definitely more to the R4 than your average fleece

Patagonia Fitz Roy Hooded Down Jacket - Men's
3 days ago
The Fitz Roy Down Hoody is very, very warm - as warm or warmer than the Fitz Roy Jacket. The nicer down used in the hoody is more comfortable, and has a greater temperature range. The shell fabric is very durable for how light it is, and the whole jacket packs down really small.

Patagonia Nano Puff Pullover Insulated Jacket - Men's
3 days ago
Yep, the Nano Puff is quite a bit warmer than the R2 Jacket. The Prima Loft insulation, and the DWR coating on the shell insulate and block the wind a lot better than the R2 fleece. R2 is still a great mid weight jacket, but I can't say enough good things about the Nano Puff, I practically live in mine all winter around the house and in the mountains

Patagonia Capilene 3 Bottom - Men's
Daniel,
From your height, weight, and waist measurement I would initially have recommended the medium. The Capilene 3 Bottoms aren't designed to be completely form fitting, and will still function well if they're a little loose. Nothing wrong with sizing down for a tighter fit, but if that medium's comfortable I'd say stick with it.

Patagonia Powder Bowl Jacket - Men's
December 13, 2009
Kai,
The Primo Flash is a 3 layer, while the Powder Bowl here is a 2 layer w/a hung mesh lining. Both excel at waterproof protection, while the Primo will be slightly more breathable due to the 3 layer construction. Primo's a little lighterweight, and the Powder Bowl offers a little bit of insulation, and is a heavier shell fabric. For a true resort skiing jacket go Powder Bowl, and if you're out in the backcountry hiking a lot, or are looking for a lighter, tehcnical shell go Primo.

Patagonia Classic Retro-X Jacket - Men's

If you want the warmer, more technical of the two go for the R4. Both are fully windproof, and the Retro X is a great jacket, but the R4 has a loftier fleece inside and out that makes it one of the warmest, if not the warmest fleece jacket on the market.

Patagonia Micro Puff Hooded Insulated Jacket - Men's
December 9, 2009
Tough call here... but I think the Slingshot might be the better jacket for you since you're just shooting for pure warmth. The Micro Puff is a great jacket, and very warm in it's own right with the Primaloft insulation and lightweight shell fabric. Since being able to wear a single layer, and just go on easy hikes with the fam is your goal I think the Slingshot should do it.

Patagonia Synchilla Alpine Hat - Kid's
December 9, 2009
I think for the Kids Synchilla Alpine Hat you might try an XXL to cover the massive curls. (The XXL translates to a head circumference of 56-58 cm) Head size is tough to guess, but I think that should give you a fairly snug fit.

Jessica, the sizing chart above has the measurements for each size. I don't know if a large would be big enough for you if you normally wear a womens small or medium. Large is designed to fit a 12 year old, which would translate to a little smaller than a womens XS I believe.

Patagonia Rubicon Rider Jacket - Men's
November 30, 2009
Snowman, your observations are right on the money -- the Rubicon Rider isn't designed to be a fully waterproof piece. The heavier fabric is full H2No and waterproof, w/ the Patagonia Deluge DWR for the rest of the jacket. Definitely good enough for the drier Boulder and Colorado winter conditions. If you're out in the wet Northeast weather all day you might want a fully waterproof jacket, but the Rubicon Ride is ok in wet snow and light rain for shorter periods of time. The good news is that since it's not down if it does wet out the synthetic Thermo Green insulation will still keep you warm.

Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket - Men's
November 16, 2009
Tommy, the Down Sweater is a great layering option if you're looking for the warmest possible combination. It'll keep you warm in the coldest of conditions, and be a great warm jacket on it's own. The R3 is also warm, but provides slightly less warmth and is more breathable and will be a better option if you do a lot of hiking or traversing and heat up often. So if you run hot and sweat a lot I'd go R3, and if you want to be super warm and aren't worried about overheating go Down Sweater. hope that helps!

Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket - Men's
November 5, 2009
For pure warmth the Sligshot Down Jacket will be warmer than the Down Sweater. The Down Sweater is designed to be very warm, while still being lightweight, layerable, and packable. It is a very warm jacket, but might not be enough in temps approaching zero. Also see the Fitz Roy Down Hoody for the warmest down jacket from Patagonia.

Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket - Men's
November 4, 2009
The fabric for the Down Sweater is a lot tougher than you'd think for how light it is. Patagonia tests fabrics extensively before they're approved to go to production for abrasion resistance and tear strength. Patagonia's Iron Clad Guarantee backs up the durability of the jacket and they'll take care of you if anything bad happens

MontBell Ultralight Thermawrap Jacket - Men's
November 4, 2009
You can't go wrong with the Nano Puff. Great jacket, super compressible and the PrimaLoft One insulation is the best synthetic insulation out there. It's very packable too - packs down to just a little bigger than a softball. It's perfect for summer in the Cascades.

Patagonia R3 Fleece Jacket - Men's
November 4, 2009
The Lightweight R4 is going to be warmer overall because it's totally windproof, except for the R1 panels you mentioned. R3 is definitely more breahtable. It's got a high loft/fuzzy interior that insulates well, and the jacket still does pretty well in the wind. So maybe on it's own LW R4 will be warmer, but layered R3 would be warmer and more breathable in any application.

Patagonia Fitz Roy Hooded Down Jacket - Men's
November 2, 2009
The Fitz Roy Down Hoody uses 181 grams of Down and the Down Sweater uses 85 grams. 800 fill refers to the quality of the down, the higher the # the loftier the down is and the better the quality. The better down insulates better and is softer.

Patagonia Stretch Ascent Jacket - Men's
November 2, 2009
both jackets would work great for the climbs up Rainier and Shasta. The Shelter Stone is a little burlier shell and would provide a little more protection when it's super wet and nasty out, and the Stretch Ascent is lighter weight, more packable, and has a little more stretch to accomodate movement. Both are completely waterproof and breathable.

Patagonia Down Sweater Full-Zip Hooded Jacket - Men's
November 1, 2009
The Down Sweater's not designed to compete with the Sub Zero, check out the Patagonia Fitz Roy Down Hoody though. It uses nicer down than the sub zero, and will get you to zero and well below.

Patagonia Fitz Roy Hooded Down Jacket - Men's
October 31, 2009
I doubt you'll find a warmer jacket out there from Mtn Harwear or anyone else out there. The Fitz Roy Down Hoody uses some of the finest down available and is made using baffled construction within the jacket so cold drafts have no way to make it through to your core. The other jackets you mentioned are warm, but only use 650 or 700 fill down which is not as lofty and warm as the 800 fill you'll find here.

Patagonia Primo Jacket - Men's
October 30, 2009
JCN, the Primo Jacket ranks high on the amazingness scale. I've got a large in the green oasis color and I am super stoked on it. Bomber construction, great features, and a killer fit. It's truly a regular fit, enough room to layer, but not too baggy. I'd base your sizing decision on how much you want to layer underneath and how loosely you like your jackets too fit. I don't layer a ton, but like a slightly looser fit so I'm in a large. go for it, you'll be stoked for sure.

Patagonia Backcountry Guide Softshell Pant - Men's
October 28, 2009
I wear a 34 in other Patagonia technical as well as casual pants and a 34 in the Backcountry Guide Pant is perfect for me. I do tend to size most of my pants up slightly, as my actual waist size is closer to a 32. There's plenty of room to layer a piece of two of long underwear. They're a mid-weight softshell with and 8.6 oz fabric and a slight brushed lining inside.

Patagonia Rock Guide Pant - Women's
October 28, 2009
Meg, the Patagonia Rock Guide pant would work well for xc skiing, also see the Alpine Guide Softshell Pant or the Patagonia Backcountry guide pant. Those last two options have more of an elastic cuff to keep snow out, and are still a breathable and water resistant soft shell pant.

Patagonia Rubicon Rider Jacket - Women's
October 28, 2009
Brook, the Rubicon Rider would be a good jcaket for super cold temps, with plenty of layer underneath as well. The Patagonia Fitz Roy Down Jacket is another great option. Down is the best insulation in the world, and will keep you the warmest during your Yukon Winters.
