Patagonia Ascensionist Softshell Jacket - Men's
August 27, 2009
I love this jacket for a lightweight ski piece, and my go to touring jacket. Super lightweight, durable, and blocks wind and moisture really well.

Patagonia Rubicon Rider Jacket - Women's

Rubicon Rider would be a good choice, or an even warmer one for you would be the Patagonia Pipe Down, it's a wareproof down puffy that is very warm!

Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket - Men's
For pure warmth the Sligshot Down Jacket will be warmer than the Down Sweater. The Down Sweater is designed to be very warm, while still being lightweight, layerable, and packable. It is a very warm jacket, but might not be enough in temps approaching zero. Also see the Fitz Roy Down Hoody for the warmest down jacket from Patagonia.

Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket - Men's
The fabric for the Down Sweater is a lot tougher than you'd think for how light it is. Patagonia tests fabrics extensively before they're approved to go to production for abrasion resistance and tear strength. Patagonia's Iron Clad Guarantee backs up the durability of the jacket and they'll take care of you if anything bad happens

MontBell Ultralight Thermawrap Jacket - Men's

You can't go wrong with the Nano Puff. Great jacket, super compressible and the PrimaLoft One insulation is the best synthetic insulation out there. It's very packable too - packs down to just a little bigger than a softball. It's perfect for summer in the Cascades.

Patagonia R3 Fleece Jacket - Men's
The Lightweight R4 is going to be warmer overall because it's totally windproof, except for the R1 panels you mentioned. R3 is definitely more breahtable. It's got a high loft/fuzzy interior that insulates well, and the jacket still does pretty well in the wind. So maybe on it's own LW R4 will be warmer, but layered R3 would be warmer and more breathable in any application.

Patagonia Fitz Roy Hooded Down Jacket - Men's
5 days ago
The Fitz Roy Down Hoody uses 181 grams of Down and the Down Sweater uses 85 grams. 800 fill refers to the quality of the down, the higher the # the loftier the down is and the better the quality. The better down insulates better and is softer.

Patagonia Stretch Ascent Jacket - Men's
both jackets would work great for the climbs up Rainier and Shasta. The Shelter Stone is a little burlier shell and would provide a little more protection when it's super wet and nasty out, and the Stretch Ascent is lighter weight, more packable, and has a little more stretch to accomodate movement. Both are completely waterproof and breathable.

The Down Sweater's not designed to compete with the Sub Zero, check out the Patagonia Fitz Roy Down Hoody though. It uses nicer down than the sub zero, and will get you to zero and well below.

Patagonia Fitz Roy Hooded Down Jacket - Men's
October 31, 2009
I doubt you'll find a warmer jacket out there from Mtn Harwear or anyone else out there. The Fitz Roy Down Hoody uses some of the finest down available and is made using baffled construction within the jacket so cold drafts have no way to make it through to your core. The other jackets you mentioned are warm, but only use 650 or 700 fill down which is not as lofty and warm as the 800 fill you'll find here.

Patagonia Primo Jacket - Men's
October 30, 2009
JCN, the Primo Jacket ranks high on the amazingness scale! I've got a large in the green oasis color and I am super stoked on it. Bomber construction, great features, and a killer fit. It's truly a regular fit, enough room to layer, but not too baggy. I'd base your sizing decision on how much you want to layer underneath and how loosely you like your jackets too fit. I don't layer a ton, but like a slightly looser fit so I'm in a large. go for it, you'll be stoked for sure.

Patagonia Backcountry Guide Pant - Men's
October 28, 2009
I wear a 34 in other Patagonia technical as well as casual pants and a 34 in the Backcountry Guide Pant is perfect for me. I do tend to size most of my pants up slightly, as my actual waist size is closer to a 32. There's plenty of room to layer a piece of two of long underwear. They're a mid-weight softshell with and 8.6 oz fabric and a slight brushed lining inside.

October 28, 2009
Meg, the Patagonia Rock Guide pant would work well for xc skiing, also see the Alpine Guide Softshell Pant or the Patagonia Backcountry guide pant. Those last two options have more of an elastic cuff to keep snow out, and are still a breathable and water resistant soft shell pant.

Babette, the Tres Parka is a very, very warm jacket! When you've got both jackets zipped together you could go out in some very cold temps and be fine, and the outer shell is fully waterproof so you'll be fine in nasty storms. The back of the down coat is quilted similar to the front.

Patagonia DAS Parka - Men's
October 23, 2009
The DAS Parka is definitely a puffy, but it's not super michelin man or staypuff marshmallow. The Primaloft insulation provides a ton of warmth and not a lot of bulk, so for a jacket this warm the DAS is a great choice.

One of Capilene's attributes over wool is definitely it's great durability. Definitely machine dryable and will last forever like mentioned below. However don't discount Capilene as that much cooler than wool. There are definitely some wool pieces that are warmer than Capilene, but this Capilene 4 bottom is very very warm!

Patagonia Downtown Loft Down Parka - Women's
October 20, 2009
Catherine,
yes, the hood for the Downtown Loft Parka is also down filled and very warm although it does not have a cinch cord. There are no inner cuffs, just a simple clean cuff. The zipper goes almost all the way down - stops about 4 inches from the bottom and is a 2 way zip if you want to have the bottom more open. The snaps also go the same length so you've got double reinforcement for warmth when it gets nasty. Let me know what size you'd like the center back length for and I can get back to you.

Rhonda, I think a mens small in the Winter Sun Jacket should fit you ok. And, Backcountry's return policy is second to none if it doesn't fit.

Patagonia Downtown Loft Down Parka - Women's
October 5, 2009
Ali, ok I changed my mind on the medium and now I'd say give it a shot in the small. For a puffy jacket it's actually a pretty flattering cut, so I agree it'd be a bummer if you were swimming in it. good luck!

Patagonia Classic Retro-X Jacket - Men's
October 5, 2009
Mike, gravel in the Retro X is a simple grey, honestly not too dark and not too light(darker than Feather Grey pictured above). There's no brown in it, the image does make it look like it though.

Patagonia Guide Softshell Jacket - Men's

Traxler, I think a medium would fit you well. Unless you've got a longer torso, or if you want a looser fit go large.

Patagonia Downtown Loft Down Jacket - Women's
October 5, 2009
Michelle, unfortunately none of the Patagonia jackets have fur on them right now. The Downtown Loft Jacket is super warm and I think you'd be good into the low 30's with a light layer underneath and even colder with a fleece or a sweater.

Patagonia Downtown Loft Down Parka - Women's
October 5, 2009
Ali, the Downtown Loft Jacket is a slim fit, so maybe the medium as long as it won't be too long? I can work on getting the measurements for you...

Patagonia Nano Puff Pullover Insulated Jacket - Women's
October 3, 2009
Sorry you're not stoked on the color options out there. Unfortunately it comes down to the #'s and men tend to buy more jackets from Patagonia than women, so more colors are offered. This was the first season for the Nano Puff, look for the color palette and options to expand greatly in the near future.

Patagonia Rubicon Rider Jacket - Men's
October 3, 2009
Patrick, the Rubicon Rider jacket can pack down pretty well and would be a great warm jacket to have on your overnight. Depending on the features you're looking for the Patagonia DAS Parka or Patagonia Micro Puff Hooded Jacket could be some options to consider as well. Both are ligthweight and super packable, but the Rubicon Rider has a powder kirt and a little bit heavier duty fabric and was designed specifically as a ski jacket. Hope that helps man

Patagonia Capilene 2 Zip-Neck - Long-Sleeve - Men's
October 3, 2009
Capilene 2 has a more open weave for the fabric, and is a lightweight, quicker drying alternative to Capilene 3. Cap 3 is a great mid-weight, and makes for a super versatile layer. Depending how cold it is where you run during the autumn you might want to go Cap 3. probably 50 degrees and above is when I'd where Cap 2 on it's own, and Cap 3 could be worn into the upper 30's or so on it's own if you're moving.
As for the fit, Seagrass/Wildwood isn't the best representation. It's an athletic cut, but not that drastic.

actually a little heat in the dryer from time to time after washing will help redistribute the DWR coating and restore the waterproofness of the shell.

Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket - Men's
October 2, 2009
Sully, honestly you're right in between a large and a medium, it will depend how you want it to fit. Large would give you a little more room to layer underneath with a fleece, and the medium would be a little more form fitting and be better for layering a shell over the top. I'm 6'1 170 and I'm very stoked on the large myself. hope that helps!

Christy, light rain would be ok, but if it's really coming down you'd want a shell over the Slopstyle Hoody.

Patagonia Classic Retro-X Fleece Jacket - Women's
September 29, 2009
I don't think you need to go as big as a medium for sure, small might be the ticket for you though. The Retro X and the R2 are both slim fit, but the R2 is slightly slimmer so you'll have more room w/ the Retro X.

If you wear a large in the Synchilla Jacket I'd go for a large in the Retro X as well, they've got a similar fit.

Patagonia Ascensionist Softshell Jacket - Men's
September 28, 2009
The pockets on the Ascentionist jacket are still functional while wearing a harness. The jacket that came before the Ascetionist was the Ready Mix, and people commented that the pockets were too high on that, so when the jacket was redesigned as the Ascentionist the pockets were brought down a little bit. I've worn mine with a harness and not had any problems - great jacket.
