Patagonia Rubicon Rider Jacket - Men's

Snowman, your observations are right on the money -- the Rubicon Rider isn't designed to be a fully waterproof piece. The heavier fabric is full H2No and waterproof, w/ the Patagonia Deluge DWR for the rest of the jacket. Definitely good enough for the drier Boulder and Colorado winter conditions. If you're out in the wet Northeast weather all day you might want a fully waterproof jacket, but the Rubicon Ride is ok in wet snow and light rain for shorter periods of time. The good news is that since it's not down if it does wet out the synthetic Thermo Green insulation will still keep you warm.

Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket - Men's

November 16, 2009

Tommy, the Down Sweater is a great layering option if you're looking for the warmest possible combination. It'll keep you warm in the coldest of conditions, and be a great warm jacket on it's own. The R3 is also warm, but provides slightly less warmth and is more breathable and will be a better option if you do a lot of hiking or traversing and heat up often. So if you run hot and sweat a lot I'd go R3, and if you want to be super warm and aren't worried about overheating go Down Sweater. hope that helps!

Patagonia Capilene 3 Crew - Long-Sleeve - Men's

November 13, 2009

The Capilene 3 is a great top and should keep you warm (and dry) on your runs in the 30's and 40's. Some people might like a light jacket, but personally I run in similar temps with a Cap 3 top and a beanie and I'm comfortable.
Merino's great in it's own right, but the Capilene 3 will be much more durable over time, and it handles moisture a lot better so you'll stay drier.

The fabric for the Down Sweater is a lot tougher than you'd think for how light it is. Patagonia R3 Fleece Jacket - Men's

The Lightweight R4 is going to be warmer overall because it's totally windproof, except for the R1 panels you mentioned. R3 is definitely more breahtable. JCN, the Primo Jacket ranks high on the amazingness scale! I've got a large in the green oasis color and I am super stoked on it. Bomber construction, great features, and a killer fit. It's truly a regular fit, enough room to layer, but not too baggy. I'd base your sizing decision on how much you want to layer underneath and how loosely you like your jackets too fit. I don't layer a ton, but like a slightly looser fit so I'm in a large. go for it, you'll be stoked for sure.

Catherine,
yes, the hood for the Downtown Loft Parka is also down filled and very warm although it does not have a cinch cord. There are no inner cuffs, just a simple clean cuff. The zipper goes almost all the way down - stops about 4 inches from the bottom and is a 2 way zip if you want to have the bottom more open. The snaps also go the same length so you've got double reinforcement for warmth when it gets nasty. Let me know what size you'd like the center back length for and I can get back to you.

Patagonia Downtown Loft Down Parka - Women's

October 19, 2009

Sandra, the shell fabric for the Downtown Loft Parka has a DWR coating to block the wind, so between that, and the thickness of the coat and the down insulation it will do a very good job blocking the wind and keeping you warm in the coldest temps.

Patagonia Capilene 4 Zip-Neck Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Women's

October 18, 2009

Capilene 4 has the higher warmth to weight ratio, although Wool 4 is warmer overall, it's like a nice sweater you can run around in. Not too take anything away from Cap 4 though. Very warm, very light and super compressible.

Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket - Men's

October 18, 2009

go for it, the Down Sweater is a great lightweight option to your mtn hardwear puffy. No "stay-puff" look to it at all and it still offers a lot of warmth. I hardly wear my big puffy now that I've got a Down Sweater - love it!

Patagonia Lightweight R4 Jacket - Men's

October 18, 2009

The R4 is warmer than the Lightweight R4, the fit between the two is very similar. and the Lightweight R4 overall is a little more breathable due to the R1 fabric under the arms which is lighter weight and has no windproof membrane to it.

Patagonia Nano Puff Pullover Insulated Jacket - Men's

October 17, 2009

The Nano Puff's very warm, I wear mine outside a ton on it's own during the winter and it's fine. Maybe for the coldest and nastiest days you'll want something more, but it's definitely more than just a fall sweater and if you layer a fleece underneath you can be comfortable in some pretty cold temps

Patagonia R4 Fleece Jacket - Women's

The R4 fleece jacket unfortunately would not zip into a North Face shell. The only Patagonia jackets that are designed to zip into shells are some of the ladies long down coats.

Patagonia R4 Fleece Jacket - Women's

October 14, 2009

from your description I think the R3 Jacket is the best fleece for you wife. It's very warm, and still offers good breathability for layering.

The two R4 fleeces are both windproof, and very warm on their own. The R4 is a fuzzier, warmer fleece, and the lightweight R4 has the same windproof membrane, but a lighter fleece, and breathable R1 fabric under the arms w/ no windproofing.
