The must-have climbing pant.

prAna Sonora Pant - Men's

prAna Sonora Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 10, 2009

This is my favorite pair of climbing pants...yes, even over the Stretch Zion pants. The cotton canvas material is breathable, slightly stretchy, and most importantly, they’re durable. The adjustable belt on these is much better than the Zion belt system, because it’s easier to adjust and seems much more durable. The cell-phone pocket is pretty much useless for a phone since it’s so narrow, but I’ve found it handy when I need to climb up to brush a hold. The mesh pockets are a nice touch and keep things cooler in warmer temperatures. The only gripe I have is the velcro closure instead of a button, although they still have a zip fly.

The sizing is way off. I’m 6’ tall, 165lbs, and a 31-32 waist/32 inseam, and the mediums were huge! They would probably fit someone with a 34-35 waist and 34 inseam. I exchanged them for smalls, which fit properly. I would check prAna’s website for the most accurate sizing chart, as they have changed some specs recently. Not much else to say, other than these pants perform up to expectations. It’s also refreshing to wear something that’s made in the United States.

I like hoodies, but LOVE this hoodie.

The North Face Sentry Mclean Full-Zip Hooded Sweatshirt - Men's

The North Face Sentry Mclean Full-Zip Hooded Sweatshirt - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 3, 2009

I was hesitant to buy such an expensive hoodie, but after using it, I have no regrets...this is an awesome product. It’s become one of my favorite layering pieces for cold climbing sessions because it’s lightweight, breathes exceptionally well, and keeps me warm on the move.

The stretch and flexibility are perfect for climbing and the fit is slightly slimmer, which allows it to hug your body. The ninja hood and thumbholes are super functional, and will keep you warm during down-time. The mouthpiece on the collar (bottom part of the hood) has lasercut holes that you can’t really see in the picture, which eliminates moisture build-up when exhaling.

The version I own only has a bicep pocket without front pockets, which I’m fine with, as I like the streamlined quality...this aspect is preferential. Seriously a great, high quality hoodie that provides function, comfort, and style.

Very versatile climbing shoe.

Evolv Pontas Climbing Shoe

Evolv Pontas Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 4 December 1, 2009

I’ve owned these shoes for two years and have resoled them once, because they perform so well. They are one of the most versatile, all-around shoes on the market and work great for steep bouldering, sport climbing, slabs...you name it. I’m a 10 street shoe and sized these to 9’s, which are now perfect. The break-in period was slightly longer and more painful compared to other shoes, but well worth it. These shoes will stretch slightly over a couple months. Initially they were so tight that it would take me three minutes to pry them on, but I fit them for performance over comfort and now have both.

The toes on these are awesome with just enough rubber to give you stiffness on small edges without losing sensitivity. I found the heel to be almost perfect even though there is the slightest amount of dead-space for me...it has yet to be an issue. These shoes are also stiff, yet flexible and smear awesome. I’ve always had a preference for Stealth rubber over Trax, because the durability of Trax isn’t as good as Five Ten’s. The edges seemed to wear down a little faster than some other shoes and in a few months my heels started to peel. The Trax rubber is very sticky however, and my resole from Yosemite Bum (who did an amazing job and fixed most durability issues) has truly made these one of my favorites shoes. 4.5/5 stars.

The North Face Sentry Mclean Hooded Fleece Jacket - Men's - DO NOT USE

November 30, 2009

There are no handwarmer pockets, but there are "monkey thumbs" that allow the sleeves to cover your hands slightly.

Best bouldering shoe...ever.

Five Ten Dragon Lace-up Climbing Shoe

Five Ten Dragon Lace-up Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 5 November 24, 2009

I based my initial sizing off of other reviews since I could not find these locally to try them on. Most reviewers said they sized up, sometimes two sizes. Therefore my consensus was to size equivalently to my street shoe size, because I prefer a tight, performance fit. The 10’s had too much toe and heel space for my taste, so I ordered 9.5’s which fit comfortably, but still had a tiny bit of excess toe space. My past experience is that even lined, synthetic shoes will stretch a little, so my rule of thumb is to find a size that fits your preference, and then size a half-size smaller to accommodate the stretch. I ended up with 9’s which fit absolutely perfect after a short break-in period. Initially they were a little uncomfortable, especially when standing on my toes, but soon conformed to my feet and now fit like a glove.

With all that said, this is by far my favorite bouldering shoe out there. The Stealth HF rubber is amazingly sticky (no surprise there) and the down-turned toe will allow you to climb through steeper problems or a series of tiny foot-jibs...these perform amazing on small edges. I also love the heel on this shoe, more than any other Five Ten heel I’ve tried (Galileo and Anasazi’s). It’s very thin and sits flush against the rest of the rubber, which allows more sensitivity/contact on your heel-hooks. I'm a fan of the laces, simply because I like having as many points of contact as possible.

My advice would be to size tight and snug, otherwise you’ll cheat yourself out of the amazing toe and heel on this shoe. Fight through the break-in period and these shoes will fight for you up your project. Phenomenal bouldering shoe!

Great active softshell.

The North Face Sentinel Thermal Softshell Jacket - Men's

The North Face Sentinel Thermal Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 12, 2009

This is the second softshell I've owned, after many tried on, and is by far my favorite of any. The Gore Windstopper material is superior to the traditional TNF Apex material. It's much more water-resistant, lighter, and softer than any other softshell out there, but doesn't sacrifice any durability or performance. You will be surprised how soft this jacket is, both inside and out.

This jacket is perfect for anyone active during brisk, winter months. I purchased it with rock climbing in mind, and so far, it's been perfect. It's surprisingly abrasion-resistant for how soft it is. The flexibility of this jacket is ideal for climbing and other similar activities. It even has some stretch and breaths very well. I would say the ideal temperature range for this jacket is 35-60F (with a short or long sleeve t-shirt underneath).

Once I wore it out casually and was caught standing outside in some colder weather (30F) with only a t-shirt underneath. Let me say, that this jacket blocks the wind like no other, but isn't very warm in colder temperatures unless you're engaged in an activity. It's definitely intended for active use.

I ran into an issue with the sizing. In every other TNF jacket I've owned, I've been a consistent medium, however the performance fit of this one had me guessing. I'm 6'0", 165lbs, 31 waist. I originally ordered a medium in this jacket, but quickly returned it for a large. The sleeve length is good on both sizes, with the large being about 1.5" longer, but still looks right. The chest area was very fitted in the medium, and is perfect in the large (as to layer). The biggest issue I encountered with the medium was the length. It was just too short and anything I wore under it was longer than the jacket itself. I'd recommend getting your normal TNF size if you plan to wear this jacket as a mid-layer, but order a size up if you want an outer-layer with some room to layer underneath.

In summary, this jacket is awesome if you plan to be active. For the price, some may expect a warmer jacket. If you're looking for a casual winter jacket, I'd look for something a little warmer. It would have been a nice touch if the pockets were lined, but it’s not a flaw. The Gore Windstopper material is very impressive and this jacket won’t let you down. 4.5/5 stars.

Almost perfect...almost.

The North Face Apex Bionic Triclimate Jacket - Men's

The North Face Apex Bionic Triclimate Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 12, 2009

I very much like this jacket. One problem with many Triclimate jackets is that the liners tend to be much smaller than the shell (particularly the sleeve length), but this jacket fits perfect: shell, liner, and both together. I'm 6'0", 165lbs, 31 waist, and the medium fits great.

The shell is very warm and is completely windproof, making it versatile for chillier days and warmer winter days (the shell's fleecebacker is a nice touch). The Heatseeker insulation is super warm and when combined with the shell, makes for a very good winter jacket. The shell is tough and the water repelling is good, but not as good as Windstopper material.

My biggest problem with this jacket is the "zip-in" compatibility, because it's actually snap-in. I was aware of this when I ordered it, but was surprised to find out it was only a 3-point system (neck and both wrists), which makes the jacket saggy when it's unzipped or off. Previously owning a true zip-in Triclimate may have made it impossible for me to accept this system, because it's basically like wearing 2 separate jackets, even when they're integrated.

That being said, I would recommend this jacket to anyone who wouldn't mind the 3-point, snap-in system. Some may even prefer it if they like to shed layers faster.
