Arc'teryx Gamma SK Softshell Pant - Men's

Arc'teryx Gamma SK Softshell Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 27, 2012

most water resistant softshell pants i have owned. typical arcteryx durability - as bomber as you can get with a softshell. fit is perfect - not baggy and no excess fabric, but not super tight either.

love the kevlar crampon instep patch. really dig the suspenders - they obviate the need for a belt - (hate having to wear belts - especially if I have to wear climbing harness over it - whole setup becomes so bulky), and they keep pants where they should be - on my hips.

fit is on the slim side. I have 32'' waist and 30'' inseam and, suprisingly, I needed a size SMALL, SHORT. that's kinda par for the course for arcteryx - all thier stuff seems to run on the slim side and long

Ridiculously simple, yet functional.

Useful on ice/snow covered trail. Lightweight and compact to pack along. Simple and fast to put on/take off. Now I save my crampons for the glaciers only

Arc'teryx Bora 80 Backpack - 4390-5000cu in

is it waterproof or water-resistant? would my down bag be ok in the occasional light drizzle or short periods of heavy downpour without a packcover?

Marmot Leadville Softshell Jacket - Men's

Marmot Leadville Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 12, 2011

my new go-to softshell for high-output cold weather activity. extremely light, extremely breathable - I routinely wear on my morning trail runs. not very warm on its own. very close-fitting, but I can easily layer a tight base layer underneath. with a midlayer fleece, or a vest, I would imagine this would be warm enough for all but the coldest winter weather. windstopper fabric does what it claims to do - I have tested on the mountains around lake tahoe.

warning - Eclipse blue is VERY blue. fatigue/beluga is more subdued green - more of a forest green.

Adidas Outdoor Terrex Conrax CP Boot - Men's

Adidas Outdoor Terrex Conrax CP Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 12, 2011

very supportive with heavy winter pack, but suprisingly nimble for a big, winter boot. No blisters after a 9 mile hike up Mt. Tallac, south lake tahoe. feet stayed warm and dry through snow, ice and slush. a bit heavy, but very warm. big fan of the speed lacing - much like Soloman trail runners. lugs are a bit unusual-looking but pretty good traction.

better than crampons

Kahtoola Microspikes Traction System

Kahtoola Microspikes Traction System

Rating for this product: 5 December 12, 2011

I will now be using these for all but glacier travel or vertical ice climbing. ridiculously lightweight and simple but EXTREMELY functional. I pack them along and whip them out when the trail becomes icy, and, BOOM! instant traction. like snow chains for my feet. they now have a permanent place in my winter pack. takes mere seconds to put on/take off - SO much better than fooling around with crampons.
