Used to be a GREAT Wide Board...

Ride Yukon Snowboard - Wide

Ride Yukon Snowboard - Wide

Rating for this product: 3 July 6, 2009

The Ride Yukon is a great board, at least it was before Ride consolidated molds and moved Mfg to China. I know its tough to find a product made anywhere else; but when they shifted they consolidated to eliminate overhead costs (didn't change the retail price to follow) and thats when things turned for the toilet. The board used to be the "big brother" of the Timeless, and had better sizing (169cm). It used to have this great 3D milled core, to reduce swing weight, just like the Timeless. When they moved to China, they consolidated their molds, making the sizing the same for the Timeless/Yukon (both boards came in the same lengths after moving); that lasted 2 years. Now the Timeless is gone, so is the 3D profile, and so is the cap construction. I have owned several lengths from pre/post China and am no longer happy with the post. The new ones are still a wide board, still fast, and the side cut geometry is now just OK. My opinion is that it doesn't hold its own to the hype anymore, and for the same price? WTF?

Voile Universal Splitboard Interface for Burton S-series Splitboard

July 6, 2009

If you have a genuine Voile split, you should already have the hardware. If you don't have the hardware, then yes, this is the kit needed for a genuine Voile split. This kit is the industry standard for all splitboard mfg's now. Depending on your year of Burton-S(pre 2006?) this kit will not work and you will have to FIND Burton proprietary hardware. This kit doesn't work for split your own boards at home, unless you want the rotating system; then Mountain and Terrain Technologies can take care of that for you.

Voile Universal Splitboard Interface for Burton S-series Splitboard

July 6, 2009

Actually this kit is the hardware provided/needed for factory split snowboards. If you find a factory splitboard that doesn't have the hardware, this is what you buy. If you want to split your own, or have Mountain and Terrain Technologies do it, then you buy the split decision kit. M n' T Tech does install the setup to be like the factory splits, i.e. rotating system; so you could purchase this if having your board split and you want the rotating system.

Awesome Crampon

Voile Split Decision Crampon

Voile Split Decision Crampon

Rating for this product: 5 July 6, 2009

These crampons are awesome for sketchy terrain or beginner splitboarders. They will fit all but the widest boards (13.7cm(ID)=27.4cm waist width board). Voile now has a wider version (14.5cm(ID)=29cm waist width board). Actually defining the above "waist width" of the board is incorrect because when you make your own homemade board, the toe clip is mounted just ahead of the balance point of the board half which is almost always not the center/waist width of the board.

They can be fixed to the slider plate when touring so they rise with your heel, or fixed to the ski so when you tour they are always in contact with the snow surface. As in my answer below, when touring and using the heel riser, only the first 1 or 2 sets of teeth are in contact with the snow. When you tour the first set of teeth do help you "dig in" and allow for more sliding then in fixed mode. When they are in a fixed setup, you have all the teeth in contact with the snow and the ultimate in stability (depending on how good you are at skinning of course). They have tapered teeth; shorter teeth in the front and longer in the back which help with the skinning process. They are burly, and take a beating season in and out. A great design and highly recommended. But in the end, if it’s really sketchy, you will want to boot pack or use crampons for your boots.

Voile Split Decision Crampon

July 6, 2009

The heel riser will work with these crampons in either mode; fixed to your slider plate when touring so they raise when you skin, or fixed to the ski. When they are fixed to your slider plate and the heel riser is up, you are limiting the contact of the crampon to only the first 1 or 2 toe teeth. When they are fixed to the ski, you get the entire crampon in contact with the snow.

It stows a saw and telescopes!

Voile T Wood Shovel

Voile T Wood Shovel

Rating for this product: 4 July 6, 2009

Another great shovel from Voile. This one comes in all flavors of scoops; T6, mini or standard size aluminum. The saw is a fine tooth blade, unlike the T6 avalache shovel which is a coarse rip saw. If you want the options of telescoping handle and different scoop types, get this one. Otherwise the T6 avalanche shovel saw blade is more universal and quicker to saw through wood.

Great Shovel, and Super Light Saw

Voile T6 Tech Shovel

Voile T6 Tech Shovel

Rating for this product: 5 July 6, 2009

Another great Voile product. The scoop is T6, their strongest material. The scoop is a little smaller then the Tele Pro (13.5x10 vs. 15x10) so it can be stowed easier. The handle is sufficiently long and sturdy. The saw makes a good addition for snow study and works well as a wood saw. Highly recommend this, a probe, and beacon to fill your back country quiver!

The Only Option!

Voile Split Decision Tractor Skins

Voile Split Decision Tractor Skins

Rating for this product: 5 July 6, 2009

Another great Voile product and the only option available for your wide splitboard ski designed and shaped to fit on the board half. Skin hair is super tough and cleans up tree sap, etc well. The glue used to hold the skin to your base is very sticky, and can be tough to seperate. I purchased some rubber/beaded drawer liner material from the hardware store and cut it just over the width of the skin (after you have trimmed it). Cut 2 pieces and place on each skin. Or if you are a ultralight packer, use only one and place inbetween each skin. Make sure to make it a little wider then your skin so you don't have to be so exact in its placement.

Voile Split Decision Tractor Skins

July 6, 2009

It might be as simple as where your feet are placed during skinning. Ultimately the hair on the skins doesn't grip to icey surfaces, it needs the breakup of snow to allow the hairs to stand perpendicular to the ski.

For a splitboard? These are your only options to cover the entire board. You can experiment and trim then down, but you might only be saving a few grams - oz.

Salomon Dialogue Wide Snowboard Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 July 6, 2009

Another first from Salomon! Wide snowboard boots that don't take up much more space, awesome. Salomon boots are great out of the box, and continue to perform year after year. I have these boots for park/spring days since they are softer then the Synapse or Malmute.

Voile SD Mojo Split Snowboard

July 6, 2009

If you are not picky, then buy a factory board. If you have an old board, or find a new board that you really like/have experience with you can always get it split by Mountain and Terrain Technologies. Most people split their old boards because they know exactly how they respond/ride. plus the price is less expensive.

Spyder Logo Cotton/Poly T-Neck Jersey - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 May 3, 2009

Spyder quality, as expected. Purchased this item for my European colleague, who is a Spyder only après skier. I don't particularly like Spyder products, but my colleague reports its a great addition to his entire Spyder ensemble. He will look and feel great skiing once, then drinking, then skiing one more time and drinking the rest of the day (all before noonish).

The Only 3-Layer Tapped Glove?

Burton AK 3L Glove - Men's

Burton AK 3L Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 29, 2006

Top notch 3-layer Goretex XCR Stretch glove with fully taped seams; damn, that’s a lot! Turning the glove inside out shows the seam taping and it looks marvelous! Attention to detail is typical China made quality and everything looks bomb proof. Leather hands and back is supple and machine washable. The warmer fleece liner has primaloft backs, hot pocket, and tacky dots on the fingers to help with articulation. The thinner glove is nice too. Fits like a neoprene glove. We will see how well things hold up (leather, seam taping). Glove runs small compared to any other Burton glove due to the seam taping; so order 1 size larger.
