  • Stomping Grounds:

Park City, UT (and surrounding Cottonwood Canyons); Utah deserts for mtn biking; Maui and Hood River for windsurfing whenever possible.
  • Bio:

Reformed east-coast and Vail bump skier who tele skies exclusively and hasn't skied a bump in 10 years. In-resort preferences on a powder day: Alta, Snowbird, Snowbasin; side-country at the Canyons most days; big backcountry lines in Little Cottonwood whenever I can drag my sad-ass partners out of bed. Lately doing some road bike racing and tons of mountain biking in lieu of my real passion of windsurfing (stoked that Backcountry is getting hard core into biking!). Relatively lame longboarder but love surfing nonetheless. Secret love of golf since moving to Utah. My knowledge of ropes and climbing ends at the bowline and only insofar as it allows me to ski a line like NW Couloir of the Pfeifferhorn.

Great pack plus Avalung security

Black Diamond Covert with Avalung Winter Pack - 1343-1953 cu in

Black Diamond Covert with Avalung Winter Pack - 1343-1953 cu in

Rating for this product: 5 February 16, 2009

I got the 32L version (size S/M for 5'10, 170 lbs) and so far it's perfect in almost all respects. Low profile enough to ride comfortably on chairlifts while doing slackcountry laps, yet big enough for an all-day assault on the Skillet on Mt. Moran with all gear, extra down jacket, etc. The diagonal ski system works even with big skis (BD Zealots) and the pack fully stuffed. Haven't had to use the Avalung yet in a burial but it's well placed in practice runs. The inner pocket for snacks, keys, condoms etc. is a little inconvenient and the shoulder straps need re-cinching occasionally, but those are my only minor bitches. Anyone spending serious time in the backcounrty should consider an Avalung pack.

The Ruling Class of skins

Black Diamond Ascension Nylon STS Skins

Black Diamond Ascension Nylon STS Skins

Rating for this product: 5 March 13, 2008

I finally decided to put an end to whining every time I pulled off my G3 skins (stickier every year!). The BD design with the glueless strip down the middle makes all the difference. These also grip like crazy on steep skin paths. I got the widest ones (140 mm) for BD Zealots--even the tip loop is perfect for these fat monsters. 5 stars!

Awesome, light jacket

The North Face Antigravity Jacket - Men's

The North Face Antigravity Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 6, 2008

Very happy with this jacket, for backcountry and resort skiing. It has tons of venting when you're chugging uphill, but remains totally windproof when it's cold out. Color scheme gets lots of positive comments. Light, durable, and packs down to a bullion cube.

Max versatility

Outdoor Research Marvel Jacket - Men's

Outdoor Research Marvel Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 6, 2008

This has become a go-to piece for backcountry, resort, and skate skiing. Great as a layer for when it's full-on winter, or as an outer shell in good weather for skate skiing. Unique look garners praise from hotties at the gym (a nice side benefit). Well-made, high quality. My first OR garment and I'm pleased as punch (whatever that means).

Voile Switchback Telemark Ski Binding

Voile Switchback Telemark Ski Binding

Rating for this product: 5 January 29, 2008

Best tele binding available. I've skied the regular Voile Hardwire for 3 years and love the bomber construction and the way they ski, so I chose these over the BD 01's. They ski exactly the same, and the tour mode is AWESOME! Can't believe they didn't come up with this system until 2007! Anyway, these are light, sturdy, and flawless. Look no further.

Holy crap these skis rule!

Black Diamond Zealot Alpine Ski

Black Diamond Zealot Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 January 29, 2008

I bought these as a big mountain/big powder day ski (for tele), and after the first day they became my 1-ski quiver. No need to use the Atomic Janak's except as rock skis. Granted they're stiff and will best suit aggresive skiers, but they actually arc on groomers and hard snow, rage in powder and crud, and don't feel any heavier skinning than did my Janaks. Just need a monster pair of skins now.

Rottefella Rotefella NNN BC BC3 Auto Binding

Rottefella Rotefella NNN BC BC3 Auto Binding

Rating for this product: 5 January 29, 2008

Got these bindings for my "bushwacking" skis (ski around the house with the dogs) and they get the job done. Simple, solid, light. The entry/release mechanism is much easier than my prior NNN BC bindings which required lifting a handle to exit; with these it's just the push of a pole. Price is right, too.

Black Diamond Zealot Alpine Ski

Black Diamond Zealot Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 December 31, 2007

Got these skis two days ago. Have skied 2 feet of 5% blowweer on day one, and today super dense windblown at SnowBasin. They absolutely rule in both conditions, and do amazingly well on groomers once you're used to them. Plenty stout in the 182 length--the faster you ski the better. Don't think I'll have any need for my Atomic Janaks anymore (no need to ski hard bumps living in Utah!

These shades rule!

Oakley Flak Jacket XLJ Sunglasses

Oakley Flak Jacket XLJ Sunglasses

Rating for this product: 5 September 7, 2007

The Flak Jackets do everything I want of them for biking--great coverage for wind and sun, fit securely on my head or helmet, and most importantly the hydrophobic coating works incredibly. I used to take my glasses off for long climbs, but no need with these--the sweat (or water you dump on your head )runs right off with barely perceptible streaking. They'll be perfect for skiing as well.

Patagonia Wavefarer II Board Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 21, 2007

Love these shorts--equal if not better quality to traditional boardie makers such as Quiksilver, O'neill, etc. Have lots of nice thoughtful features built in. Fit and sizing are spot on, and they garnered several comments on a recent Mexico surf trip from both hot young women and gay men alike!

The North Face Ultra 103 XCR Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 18, 2006

These are the best trail runners I've had. Bone dry and great grip for running in snow, perfect fit, great arch support for a fairly flat foot. Good looking and not super-dorky if you have to wear them out with jeans, etc. Priced right, too.

Scarpa T1 Telemark Ski Boot

Scarpa T1 Telemark Ski Boot

Rating for this product: 5 December 8, 2006

Have only skied these three days, but so far they're excellent. A little stiffer than the previous T1 (but haven't added any weight) and the new buckles (4 instead of 3) work great and look very cool in metallic red. What's not to like?

Great XC glove

Toko Thermo Plus Glove

Toko Thermo Plus Glove

Rating for this product: 5 December 8, 2006

These are best for high-exertion sports--XC, winter running, backcountry--as they don't have much insulation. But that's what they were designed for. Nice fit, nice stealth look. Muy bueno. Price is right.

Janak muy bueno!

Atomic Janak Telemark Ski

Atomic Janak Telemark Ski

Rating for this product: 5 January 27, 2006

These skis rule. I have the Teledaddies also; these are perhaps a touch lighter. Insane powder and crud ski, ripping fast and stable through mank. This is a 1-ski quiver; the only skis I use in Utah (The Teledaddies are now my rock skis).

Voile Hardwire Telemark Binding

Voile Hardwire Telemark Binding

Rating for this product: 5 January 27, 2006

I love these bindings. They have slightly more tension than the G3's, are light, bombproof, and a great value. Note: they don't come with climbing bars anymore; you have to buy them separately. The red ones look way cool.

Great shoes. Comfy, supportive, and waterproof. Nice looks; a combo of newschool skate-style, while still looking athletic. Note on sizing; these fit true to size, not sized large as the description said. (I had to return the original ones I bought and reorder).

Suunto Observer Watch Stainless Steel with Elastomer Band

Suunto Observer Watch Stainless Steel with Elastomer Band

Rating for this product: 5 March 7, 2005

This is my first altimeter watch; I always thought they were more of a novelty than a necessity. But the altimeter and compass functions were vital on a recent backcountry trip to the Coalpit. It's light, strong, stylish (much smaller than other Suunto models) and packed with so many features I haven't had a chance to learn about yet.

Arc'teryx Sidewinder AR Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 27, 2005

This new Sidewinder rules! Totally waterproof, extremely breathable, light, great attention to detail. (Stowable hood is great) Arcteryx is my favorite outdoor brand by far, and the Sidewinder (alongside the Alpha Comp Hoody for really warm touring days) is a winner.

Rating for this product: 5 August 16, 2004

Airboard Classic 130 Bodyboard

Airboard Classic 130 Bodyboard

Rating for this product: 5 April 20, 2004

Just rode the airboard for my first time--can't say it was better than sex, but it beats heavy petting! Rode on moderately steep terrain in about 8-10" of fresh, and it's such a blast. Face shots the whole way; absurdly fast without getting out of control. You can catch air off any bump, and the landings are butter-soft. Light, easy to pack and inflate. Would be insane behind a snowmobile.

The Alpha Comp Hoody has turned out to be the perfect jacket for touring and sunny days in the resort. Plenty dry and windproof enough, but so much lighter and more breathable than my Marmot Goretex. Gets lots of style comments too. Good suggestion by BackcountryStore.com!

The best damn jacket

Arc'teryx Gamma SV Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Gamma SV Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 15, 2002

The Arcteryx, while a bitch to spell and pronounce, is the single best piece of clothing I've ever owned, period (well, except for that codpiece my wife bought for our anniversary...). Seriously, in the first two weeks I owned it I went running in driving rain, hiked Fjords in snowstorms in Norway, and wore it for a frigid sunrise atop Haleakala in Maui, and wore it home from the hospital on a Utah winter morning after major surgery. Warm, dry, and comfy in all situations. Not to mention getting several compliments from striking Viking women, both home and abroad. What more could you want from a jacket?
