Stomping Grounds:
Based in salt lake, recreate throughout the Intermountain West -
Bio:
I love to do just about anything and everything outside, and I love to learn about the gear needed (and lusted after) in all the sports and activities I do. I've had two major knee injuries in the last six months, one from snowboarding, one from slipping in the kitchen, so this has kept my activity level pretty low, but also had the benefit of getting me back into biking, and giving me plenty of time to read and learn more about gear, techniques, and places to use them.
I'm 6'5" and about 290 pounds with a size 15 foot, so finding clothing and other gear that actually fits me can be very difficult. I've had very good success with these brands:
Marmot clothing, outerwear, and sleeping bags.
Pearl Izumi bike clothes
Sidi bike shoes
Gregory and Arc'Teryx tall sized backpacks
Kelty and Mtn. Hardwear tents and sleeping bags
Vans snowboard boots
Superfeet orange and green insoles
And a whole mess of accessories and other stuff.

Pearl Izumi Attack Knicker - Men's
February 20, 2009
I'm 6'5" and these seem to fit extremely well on me. The legs are long enough, and the bib straps are long enough too, I was a little surprised by this, but I'm quite happy with these.

Osprey Packs Transit Courier Bag - 1700 cu in
September 14, 2008
I've had it in a pretty significant rain/snow, and it didn't show any signs of leaking. The fabric was pretty damp, and I wouldn't trust it to keep my stuff as dry as my timbuk2, but if it is actively being rained on for less than an hour, it should be fine.

Therm-a-Rest Dream Time Sleeping Pad

It says the fleece is removable, so probably just a light machine or hand wash, and as for the pad itself, just soap and water should do fine.

I wouldn't bet my survival on it, no. Would it work in a pinch? Maybe. But for me, if there's a risk of being trapped in the backcountry and needing to build a shelter, I'd want more than maybe.

Kelty Gunnison 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season
August 26, 2008
A whiteout like snow whiteout? This is definitely a 3 season tent, with good bag and pad, you can be comfortable to pretty cold temps, but as much as I like mine, I wouldn't go near a whiteout in it.

Personally, I like to have more than a foot or two of extra strap so that there's no question in my mind whether I got enough leverage to keep whatever I rigged in place exactly as I left it. As far as the extra hanging off, the daisy chain will be your best friend. Check out this pdf for good instructions.www.bottrell.ca/Docs/Boaters%20Tip-Chain%20Sinn

Snow Peak GigaPower Lantern, Auto Ignition
August 17, 2008
The grey button on the side next to the valve should be the piezo-ignition button, and should spark and light the lantern when attached to the gas canister. I say should because I've been less than impressed with auto-ignitors across the board, and while I haven't used this one specifically, I would guess that it works the same third of the time as all the others. You could also try matches or a lighter, but be careful, and make sure the flame is near the jet before you open the valve so it doesn't make a giant flame and burn the hair on your hands off. Wow, that doesn't sound like experience talking at all:)

It might be a little heavier than you would want, it's a little more than double the weight of the Petzl Tikka. Ultimately, it depends on the amount of light you need, and what kind of weight you're willing to put up with to get it.

The North Face Terra 60 Backpack - 3700-3850cu in
August 15, 2008
You measure (or rather, have someone else measure, so you get a good measurement) from your C7 vertebrae (the one that sticks out the most at the base of your neck) down to the top of your iliac crest, or hip bones. If you have your friend hold the tape, and you place your hands on top of your hip bones, sticking out, then your friend can usually make a pretty good measurement.

Canada Goose Tofino Bomber Jacket - Men's

I'm assuming you are meaning -20 to -40 Centigrade, or somewhere about 0 degree Fahrenheit. In those temps, I would look more at a down jacket unless it is a very wet cold. Although, if you were comfortable in those temps in a shell previously, then this would be a good choice too.

The North Face WindWall Thermal Fleece Jacket - Men's
August 2, 2008
I think it depends on your definition of winter. Would probably be ok for most of winter in Utah, where it is really not all that cold on a day to day basis, but would definitely not be ok for somewhere like chicago or wisconsin where it is just damn cold all the time. It may say it blocks the wind, but it won't block ALL the wind.

You measure from your C7 vertebrae (the one that sticks out the most on the back of your neck) to the top of your iliac crest (hips). It helps to have someone else do it so you get the most accurate measurement instead of contorting yourself.

GSI Outdoor Lexan Cup - 12 oz
July 19, 2008
Yes and no. Yes it can be used, and it will work just fine, it is the same material Nalgenes were made out of until recently. The no part comes from the risk of BPA leaching in something like this. Lexan is generally safe, and so far research only shows that the BPA is leached in significant amounts when it is heated. So it can be, it just may not be the best idea to do so.
