Giro Seam Excellent Adjustable Fit

Giro Seam Helmet

Rating for this product: 4 November 21, 2009

Just got my Giro Seam Helmet - it fits great and integrates perfectly with my Giro Basis goggles. I wasn't exactly sure what size to get at first, then I realized that my mountain bike helmets are both Giro, size Large - I got the Seam in size Large and it is just right. Stoked on the Skullcandy/Giro Audio Drops.

I also noticed that there is a cool, unmarked feature in the back of the Giro Seam helmet that makes it even more comfortable - the fit dial strap can actually be moved up or down to ensure that when you tighten down the dial, it hits the back of your head in just the right spot. Just look at the inside of your helmet where the fit dial strap connects to it - back/center, just above the dial (see attached photo). You will notice that there are different holes that the strap can connect to - just pop it out of the holes that it is currently in and click it back into the helmet where you like it. By moving the strap down towards your neck, you will raise the brim of the helmet (good for anyone wearing larger goggles). If you move the strap up towards the top of your head, the brim will come down on your forehead.

Hestra Cloud Nine Glove

November 10, 2009

For my Hestra Gloves, I always apply after leaving the gloves near a heater in my house for a little while to make sure that they are warm/room temperature, but not too hot. Don't worry about getting the the waterproofing on the synthetic parts of the glove, it will just make it more water repellent. I usually re-apply the leather balm and/or waterproofing 1/2 way through the season to keep the leather in good shape.

Smith PIVLock V90 Sunglasses

Rating for this product: 5 October 12, 2009

I used the Smith PIVLock v90 Sunglasses for the first time this weekend during the 24 Hours of Moab bike race and they were excellent. The PIVLocks are super light - probably the lightest shades I've worn - and the frameless design provides a great field of view as well as plenty of protection from sun and dust. The PIVLock design makes changing the lenses quick and easy. Highly recommended.

Darn Tough Merino Wool No-Show Mesh Sock

Rating for this product: 5 September 8, 2009

I bought the Darn Tough Merino Wool No-Show Mesh Sock to use biking and they are awesome - the lightweight construction, snug fit and low cut were exactly what I was looking for. Even during the peak of the Utah summer, these socks did a great job of keeping my feet cool and dry. I wear a size 12 shoe and size large Darn Tough Socks. If you're looking for a lightweight, low-cut sock for running, biking, golf or tennis, I would highly recommend the Darn Tough Merino Wool No-Show Mesh Sock.

Bridgedale X-Hale Cool Lo Sock - Perfect for Mountain Biking

Bridgedale X-Hale Cool Lo Sock

Bridgedale X-Hale Cool Lo Sock

Rating for this product: 5 September 8, 2009

The Bridgedale X-Hale Cool Lo Sock has quickly become my favorite sock to wear for mountain biking because of it's lightweight yet comfortable cushion, great breathability, and the way that it stays in place just above the top of my shoes. In my experience, many ankle socks tend to slip down below the top of my shoes during rides. Not only is it annoying to have a bunched up sock in your shoe, it's a quick way to get a blister, and that's no good. After wearing these Bridgedale X-Hale Cool Lo Socks for the last couple months, I'm still impressed with the way they stay in place - this sock fits my foot like a glove - I wear a size 12 shoe and size Large Bridgedale sock. Highly recommended.

V.I.O. POV 1.5 Camera

September 8, 2009

(Here it is, directly from Ian at V.I.O)

The differences between the POV.1 and the POV 1.5: The POV 1.5 is an upgraded version of the POV.1. All accessories, cameras heads, mounts, and SD cards that work on the POV.1 will work on the POV 1.5 and vice versa. Below are three major changes: - The POV 1.5 has the v1.3 firmware already installed (the 8GB SDHC firmware) - The POV 1.5 comes with the orange "tethered" camera head. The permanently attached AV cable reduces cable/pin damage cause by improper head connections. This camera head works with the POV.1 as well as the POV 1.5, and has the same field of view and resolution as that of the POV.1 Wide Angle camera head. - Different mounts come with the POV 1.5: Star Mount and the Double Hook and Loop Mount. Please note that mounts can be purchased separately of a POV.1 or POV 1.5. The only exceptions are the mounts in the POV Mount Kit.

GU Chomps Energy Chews - Work Great, Taste Even Better

GU Chomps Energy Chews 16-Pack

GU Chomps Energy Chews 16-Pack

Rating for this product: 5 September 7, 2009

The GU Chomps Energy Chews are my new favorite snack for mountain biking, hiking, and even for a little boost of energy during a summer concert. That's right, during my mountain bike trip through the Northwest this summer, I stopped at the Gorge in WA for two Phish concerts - I had a case of Pomegranate GU Chomps in the car, so I threw a few packages in my pockets before the first show. Sure enough, the Chomps were a hit with everyone and I had none left by end of the night!

For those of us who don't like traditional energy goo packets, GU Chomps are a great option. They're packed with enough flavor to make even the driest mouth water - a huge plus on those hot, dusty days - and deliver the same amount of energy as traditional goo packets. They have become so popular this summer that stores can barely order them fast enough - if you see that they are currently sold out, don't worry, the stock will be replenished within a couple days!

Oakley Jawbone Sunglasses

Oakley Jawbone Sunglasses

Rating for this product: 5 August 3, 2009

I got my Oakley Jawbones in Matte Black/Black Iridium Vented-Yellow last week and they are awesome for Road and Mountain Biking - they fit my face very well (I have a med/large face) and it is super easy to change out the lenses. I have also had a few people around the office with smaller faces try them on and they fit their smaller faces very well too. I like the vented lenses - they keep your face cool without letting any wind into your eyes. Highly Recommended.

Absolutely Amazing Glasses

Kaenon Gauge Sunglasses - Polarized

Kaenon Gauge Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 5 June 18, 2009

The second I put on my Kaenon Gauge sunglasses, I immediately was transported into another world; a world where everything looked clearer and more vibrant that it had before, glasses or not. In all seriousness, the Gauge glasses provide the most optical clarity I have ever experienced. I have what I would consider a rather large face, and these fit great - a bit tight at first, and after a couple days, they felt perfectly snug and secure. I have worn these crusing around on my bike, at the beach, driving... well, pretty much everywhere and they continue to impress me and anyone else who tries them on. Not only do they perform well, they look good too. As an added bonus they come with a super sturdy case and nice lens cleaner/bag. Definitely a 5 of 5 in my book.

Personally, I wear my Hestra gloves without any liners - the Vertical Cut gloves are warmer than they look. That said, if you would like to wear liners with these, I'd suggest a nice, thin liner like the Icebreaker Glove Liner (ICE0218) - we will be getting more in Aug/Sept. Icebreaker Hike Mid Crew Sock - Men's

March 31, 2009

There are a number of aspects of the physical and chemical structure of Merino that make it naturally more resistant to odors than other textiles, especially synthetics.

Moisture Transport - While sweat itself has no odor, if it remains on the skin in time bacteria develop and create unpleasant body odors. Merino reduces the opportunity for odors to generate because it is more efficient than other textiles at absorbing sweat and evaporating it into the air.

No Microbial attraction - Studies have shown that bacteria are more attracted to the smooth, positively charged surface of a synthetic fiber than the scaly surface of a Merino fiber which carries no charge.

Moisture Absorption - The Merino has a much greater capacity than other fibers to absorb moisture. In fact, it can absorb 35% of its own weight in liquid. The moisture is bound within the structure, and so is not available to microbes, which are unable to penetrate the scaly surface of the fiber.

Glass Transition - In water and conditions of high humidity, Merino passes through what is termed a glass transition at which point it dramatically increases its rate of absorption and dispersion.

Trapping Odors - The rate of diffusion of small and large molecules into the fiber increases and it is able to absorb odors faster. When the temperature drops, and the fiber once again falls below the glass transition, the odors are trapped within the structure even if the moisture evaporates. Later, during laundering, the garment again passes through the glass transition point and the odors are carried out of the structure by the water. Synthetics are not able to benefit from this same effect because they do not pass through glass transition during normal wear.

Patagonia Footwear Huckleberry Approach Shoe - Men's

March 16, 2009

I bought these shoes aroung Thanksgiving 2008. I have a similar size foot as you and bought the 11.5. They fit perfect. I also have a narrow foot and they fit snug, not uncomfortable, just the opposite. I am a carpenter and wear these shoes 6 days a week and my feet never hurt. These shoes replaced my $150.00 Red Wing work boots, which are very comfortable and supportive shoes. I would not hesitate to buy these again. They seem to be wearing fine...I do not do any hiking, etc. But they get a pretty good workout on the jobsite.**I definitely agree with the advice above - I wear a 12 in Nike and New Balance, and the 11.5 fits perfectly. I actually ordered both the 11.5 and the 12 just to make sure, and the 12 felt slightly large. Wearing the 11.5 right now and am very happy.

The link below is Hestra's care advice website:www.hestragloves.com/www/live/hestragloves/HGStandardGrey.aspx?TreeID=27James is correct here - the white leather will show some signs of wear; however, I think that the white leather may even look better once it's been nicely broken-in! Of course, any normal wear or minor discoloration (minor, because the white leather actually stays much whiter than one would expect) will not have a negative impact on the gloves' performance.

These are my #1 Goggles

Oakley Crowbar Goggle

Oakley Crowbar Goggle

Rating for this product: 5 March 4, 2009

The Oakley Crowbars have been my number one goggle for this season as well as last season. Whether I'm skiing at Alta/Bird or sledding in the Backcountry, the Crowbars have provided me with great optical clarity and comfort. I'm not someone who strictly wears Oakley either - I love my Smith's too. That said, I would compare the Oakley Crowbar to the Smith Prodigy in size/fit and comfort. For those bright, bluebird days, the Fire lense is perfect...better than most sunglasses if you as me. For grey days and/or flat light, I switch out the fire and go with one of the H.I. lenses (H.I. = High Intensity), as they brighten things up.

Keep in mind that they ski pretty short because of the twin tip and lots of guys my size (5'9", 175) ski the 183's. You should be OK on the 190's if you are a strong skier (sounds like it).No doubt about it cju - you are a 190 without question! I am 6'2" 194 and the 190 is perfect.

Volkl Gotama Alpine Ski

November 18, 2008

These would work ok as a powder ski, But in my opinion if you are adding to a quiver and looking for a ski to just ski powder I would go with something a lot wider then the gotama, there is so many fat pow skis that would give you that floaty - surfey feel .. such as hellbents in 189 -- moment komi's -- armada arg -- pontoons -- line prophet 130 -- volkl kantana -- liberty double helix -- rossie S6.. I would look for skis with at least 115mm in the waist and go from there. AS for bindings for your weight you will need a 14 din + binding look - rossie px14, 15 or 18, salomon sth 14 or 16 marker jester is another option. For your weight I think you would be better off with a wider ski than the gotamaWillie is right on point - if you have a quiver, there is no need to get the Gotamas - I have them and love them, don't get me wrong... I use them as my everyday skis! For a full-blown powder ski, you'll be stoked on a super-wide setup...the ARGs are my weapons of choice at Alta when the going gets good, and if I were going to get another pair to replace the ARGs, I would get the Volkl Kuro or the Black Diamond Megawatts. They are a bit stiffer than the Hellbents, and I think you'll really appreciate the extra heft. Have a great winter!

Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Sleeping Pad - Rectangular

Rating for this product: 5 August 25, 2008

The Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Sleeping Pad is the most comfortable sleeping pad I have ever used! It might take a couple extra breaths to inflate; however, it is well worth the effort. Blow it up, toss it down and snooze - this sleeping pad is amazing. It's comfortable, insulating and reasonably compact-able (I have the long/wide). If you are someone who never really gets a comfortable sleep on a sleeping pad, check out Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Sleeping Pad - it is going to make you very happy.

Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Sleeping Pad - Rectangular

August 24, 2008

I was wondering the same thing when I bought mine. After using the Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Sleeping Pad for summer camping in Moab, Ut multiple times, I am psyched! I think the insulation really helps keep your body at a good temperature - but it doesn't generate any noticeable heat from what I can tell. It is great in all temperatures based on my experience - just used it for two nights in Jackson Hole this weekend, and had no comfort or warmth issues - a good thing, considering there was a frost on Friday night!

Psyched on this tent

The North Face Moraine 23 Bx Tent 2-Person 3-Season

The North Face Moraine 23 Bx Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 July 23, 2008

The North Face Moraine 23 Bx Tent is the first tent I've ever owned and I have been psyched ever since it arrived at my house. The Moraine 3-person is a nice, durable tent that is easy to setup and break down. With doors on either side, you don't have to climb over or around the others in the tent when trying to get in or out. Overall, a great tent - I highly recommend it.

*If you are going to buy this tent, consider getting the matching footprint - I did, and it works perfectly (as I expected).

The North Face Moraine 23 Bx Tent 2-Person 3-Season

The North Face Moraine 23 Bx Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 July 23, 2008

Since purchasing The North Face Moraine tent, I have been really psyched - the tent is easy to set up and take down, durable, well-vented and affordable. My favorite feature is the doors on either side of the tent - forget about climbing on/over the others when you need to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, you can get out from either side!

Works great with the TNF Moraine footprint also.

Pearl Izumi SyncroFloat 2 Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 17, 2008

I'm very happy with the Pearl Izumi SyncroFloat 2 Running Shoe - they are lightweight, supportive and fit my med/wide foot very well. I have worn these running on pavement with no issues at all - my father uses them for absolutely everything... mowing the lawn, watching the Red Sox, playing golf - he just got his third pair and is still psyched on them. A great all around shoe, these fit true to size for me. Would definitely buy them again, especially at this price.

Not just for Custodians!

Patagonia Custodian Short - Men's

Patagonia Custodian Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 17, 2008

The Patagonia Custodian Short is my new favorite Patagonia short - they are a good fit, durable, soft and have a nice casual cut. I have worn mine basically everyday since I got them - from Telluride to Jackson and back to work, these are my new go-to shorts. In fact, I am ordering a different color now, so I really can wear them everyday (without getting the "haven't you worn those for like 20 days in a row").

I ordered a 34 and 36 when I first got them - the 34 fits perfectly. I am 6'2" 190 lbs with a general 34ish waist.

Patagonia Midweight Hiking Crew Sock

Rating for this product: 5 June 30, 2008

The Patagonia Midweight Hiking Crew Socks are and have been my favorite socks for some time now. They are excellent for hiking, but also do a great job as an everyday sock. Take note - they are midweight, so they might feel a bit warm if you wear them on a hot summer day. The size chart is right on - go with that. They are quite durable, as I've had mine for 11 months and they show little if any signs of wear. Highly recommended!

Smith Super Method Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 5 June 12, 2008

Excellent glasses all-around! I highly recommend them to anyone looking for polarized glasses that can be worn for virtually everything with no problem. The polarized lenses' optical quality is top-notch - great for days on the water, driving or riding your bike. The Super Methods are lightweight and quite durable - I haven't had issues with them slipping off - add some Croakies and you'll never have to worry. The fit is what I would describe as med to med-wide and the coverage is generous.

My new Favorite Bike Shorts

Fox Mid Ranger Bike Short - Men's

Fox Mid Ranger Bike Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 12, 2008

I'll admit, I got these shorts because I have never been let down by Fox Racing, the price was right and I liked the Ash color. When the shorts came, I was very impressed, as they were better than I even hoped they would be. The material is nice and light without feeling or being fragile - no problem in 90F... and when I took my first big digger, they showed no signs of damage at all. The fit is true to size around the waist, and the cut is generous; there's plenty of room for movement freeriding, yet they won't get in your way while banging out a long xc ride. Plenty of pockets for iPod, Wallet, Etc. Comfortable enough to wear around long after the ride has finished. Definitely recommended for anyone looking for a do-it-all bike short.

Top-Notch MTB Shorts

Fox High Frequency Bike Short - Men's

Fox High Frequency Bike Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 12, 2008

The Fox Racing High Frequency Bike Shorts are the highest quality shorts I've owned. Yes, there are cheaper shorts out there; however, I found that by spending a few more dollars, I got a much better (trim) fit from the High Frequency bike shorts than other shorts I've had in the past. The fit is key for me when I'm considering bike shorts with built-in chamois liner... when the cut is right (as it is in the H.F.) the chamois is very comfortable and protective on long rides. They are cut longer to keep them from riding up, but I wouldn't call them baggy, especially compared to Fox Racing's Mid-Ranger shorts. I have worn them on all types of mtb rides and am still pumped that I made the choice to spend a couple extra dollars.
