If you need multiple biner's, get these ...

If your lifting the entire boat with one biner, be safe and get a steel biner ...
http://www.backcountry.com/omega-pacific-1-2in-steel-large-d-screw-lok-carabiner

This biner is priced high because of the brand name and the locking type. You don't need this high priced biner for your application.

Black Diamond Momentum AL Harness

June 15, 2010

I have posted the same thing for all the sailors ... Get a bosuns chair http://www.backcountry.com/outdoorgear/Black-Diamond-Bosuns-Chair/BLD0965M.html. You still wear a harness but you put the load (your body weight) on the chair and not the harness. That will take the pressure off your waist and legs.

#1 Belay Device Biner

Black Diamond VaporLock Screwgate Carabiner

Black Diamond VaporLock Screwgate Carabiner

Rating for this product: 5 June 9, 2010

There are lighter lockers out there (Wild Country Neon, Mad Rock SuperTech, etc.) But this is the lightest pear shape locker. I use this strictly for the master point and belay loop because it's munter hitch compatible. You can use these for building anchors or clipping into the anchor ... but like I said there's lighter and way cheaper lockers out there.

Nice Device

Mammut Smart Belay Device

Mammut Smart Belay Device

Rating for this product: 5 June 9, 2010

This device is amazing. Although, I want to make something clear. THIS DEVICE DOES NOT AUTO-LOCK. Mammut designed the device to have rope slip to make a more dynamic belay. The device works by pinching the rope between the carabiner and the device. The amount of pinch on the rope can also depend on the carabiner used (use an HMS carabiner only). I would call this an assisted belay device. It helps you catch the fall and makes it more dynamic for a smooth fall. I choose this over any other device for leading. It's light, works on skinny ropes (I use a 9.4mm rope), not mechanical, easy to use, and did I say light. #1 rule with any belay device ... keep your hand on the brake strand ALWAYS.

Edelweiss Duolight Climbing Rope - 8mm

May 18, 2010

Twin ropes involve clipping two thinner ropes into each piece of protection. So you would need to buy two of these.

Advantages
- more durable than a single rope
- climb longer pitches (full rope length rappel)

Disadvantages
- cost more
- more rope drag than a single rope

Ruffwear Web Master Dog Harness

May 11, 2010

No!!! Do NOT use this harness to suspend the dog. Ruffwear does makes a strength-rated harness for dogs. It's called the DoubleBack harness. I would contact Ruffwear to verify the DoubleBack harness can be used for a paragliding application.

http://www.ruffwear.com/DoubleBack-Harness

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjOuGD3M_Lc

I would think the setup would be something like this ...
Attach the harness using the tie in point (as shown in the video). Instead of tying in with a rope ... attach the harness to the paraglider using a sewn sling (Metolius PAS or Sterling Chain Reactor have loops so you can adjust easy) and two locking carabiners (black diamond quicksilver are cheap and will work perfect for this) opposite opposed.

Petzl Spirit Express Quickdraw

April 16, 2010

I would get 10 - 12. For size I would get 11cm and a couple 17cm (for the anchors and such). With that said, I have no problems with lighter quickdraws and smaller biners. I know the reviews here say otherwise, but it's all about practicing your clipping. If you still want heavy stiff nylon draws look into CAMP USA Orbit Express Nylon Quickdraw. They are lighter (93g vs 104g), cheaper ($14.95 vs $23.95), and the opening on the bent gate is wider than the spirit (24mm vs 20mm).

Black Diamond Momentum Dual Speed Combo

April 12, 2010

Hey Justin, the dual has two buckles on the belt, the momentum sa has one. The momentum sa is a good choice. What I look for in a harness is WEIGHT! I want the lowest weight while still maintaining some comfort. The dual buckles are usless and just add more weight. As for a biner and device. Buy a Metolius Element (cheap and light HMS biner just big enough to tie a munter) and a Petzl Reverso 3. If you ever get into trad climbing you will need an "auto blocking" device i.e. Petzl Reverso 3. Pay the extra bucks and buy one device. If some of this does not make sense let me know. I'll try to explain it in more detail.

Black Diamond Stone Climbing Glove

March 24, 2010

No. Don't buy these for jamming. If you absolutely need to cover your hands. Try a tape glove, a rubber glove, or you can waste your money on some Hand Jammies. I attached tape glove instructions. This is just one common way to make a tape glove. If you don't want to keep the tape glove, just wrap your hand in tape using as little as possible, cut if off and throw it away at the end of the day.

This is an article from Climbing magazine showing how to make a rubber glove. http://www.climbing.com/print/techtips/tttrad225/

Some say that gloves, no matter how tight, still slide and the thickness reduces sensitivity. Others swear by them.

Black Diamond Big Gun Harness

March 23, 2010

The waist belt is supposed to fit right above your hip bones. So where the leg loops ride varies. It all depends on your build. It's OK to have the leg loops in the crotch. I see climbers "sagging" in there climbing harness so the leg loops don't ride there crotch. Don't do this. Pull the waist belt above your hips. If the leg loops are in your crotch and it's too uncomfortable, try a different harness.

For the price this is a great pad. If you want more comfort or if you are camping in cold weather (sleeping on snow). Pair it up with a Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest Deluxe. The Ridge Rest has a R-Value of 3.1 which is one of the highest for it's weight. R-Value is a measurement of a given material’s resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-Value, the greater the insulation provided. This combination would cost less than $100 and the weight would be around 41oz.

Petzl Grigri Belay Device

Petzl Grigri Belay Device

Rating for this product: 5 March 21, 2010

When your partner is working that crux, you'll be glad you have an auto locking device. The grigri is one of the best devices for this purpose. This device is really easy to use just make sure to read the manual. Although, this device is auto locking it DOES NOT make up for poor belay skills. Learn to belay from a professional before using ANY belay device. You can also use the grigri for many other things (although not recommended by Petzl). Use it to descend, as a ratchet, to ascend, etc... For those wondering about using this on skinny ropes, the manual say's "9.7mm rope is acceptable".

Omega Pacific Rappel Ring

Rating for this product: 3 March 20, 2010

Do not use this a descender! When you set up your anchor, you thread this ring through the anchor cord/webbing. Then put your rope through the ring and rappel. It is intended solely as a hardware alternative to bail-out slings, webbing and cord.

Petzl Reverso 3 Belay and Rappel Device

Petzl Reverso 3 Belay and Rappel Device

Rating for this product: 3 March 17, 2010

The v shape grooves are worthless. They just dig into your rope decreasing your rope life. Many people still use an original Reverso to belay and descend and have never had a friction problem. Buy a Trango B52. The B52 design is hard to beat.

Ugg ... the grooves again. The v shape grooves are worthless. They just dig into your rope decreasing your rope life. Many people still use a regular atc to belay and descend and have never had a friction problem. Buy a Trango B52. The B52 design is hard to beat.

THE classic tube style belay device

Black Diamond ATC Belay Device

Black Diamond ATC Belay Device

Rating for this product: 3 March 16, 2010

The ATC is classic. So classic, most people call all tube style devices ATC's. The only problem is this device will not autoblock if you want to belay from the anchor. So ... buy a Trango B-52.

Black Diamond Super 8 Belay/Rappel Device

Black Diamond Super 8 Belay/Rappel Device

Rating for this product: 3 December 1, 2009

BD's website say's the strength is 15kN. I would look into an 8 from Omega Pacific or BlueWater. OP's 8 is 35kN with a weight of 105g. I can sacrifice an 18g difference for 20kN of strength.

For those of you want to shave of all the extra oz... Get this helmet. It's the lightest helmet I've wore. It fits well and ventilates. It's adjustable for a beanie or a hood. Also, you won't look like a bobble head in this!

Evolv Prime Climbing Shoe

Evolv Prime Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 5 November 27, 2009

Love these shoes. They will not stretch so get the size right. They fit small. I wear size 11.5 street shoe and 12 in the primes and they are still crazy tight. Not the most comfy shoes but the rubber is sticky and you can step on anything with these.

Metolius PAS Personal Anchor System w/ Element Locking Carabiner

Metolius PAS Personal Anchor System w/ Element Locking Carabiner

Rating for this product: 3 November 27, 2009

I recommend the chain reactor over this. The chain reactor is 100% nylon which will take shock load better than high strength fibers like dyneema, spectra, technora, etc... Sterling say's it survived multiple fall factor 2's. The PAS is 27% Dyneema / 73% nylon.

I Like It

Sterling Chain Reactor Canyon Sling

Sterling Chain Reactor Canyon Sling

Rating for this product: 5 November 27, 2009

The chain reactor is all nylon (11/16") and each loop is full strength. Sterling say's it survived multiple fall factor 2's. You can use it to clip into an anchor, extend your belay device for a rappel, etc... You girth hitch the long green to your belay loop or tie in points. CAUTION: Before girth hitching this to your harness double check your harness for wear and tear. I recommend this over the Metolius PAS. The chain reactor is 100% nylon which will take shock load better than high strength fibers like dyneema, spectra, technora, etc... The PAS is 27% Dyneema / 73% nylon.

Not Very Durable

Metolius Gripsaver Plus

Metolius Gripsaver Plus

Rating for this product: 3 November 27, 2009

I tore a tendon in my finger doing some 2 finger pull-ups. This helped me while I was out from climbing. The best part about this product is the resistance when extending your fingers. The worst part is it broke after a month of use and it cost too much.

High Strength

Sterling PowerCord Cordelette - 6mm

Sterling PowerCord Cordelette - 6mm

Rating for this product: 5 November 27, 2009

This is NOT nylon cord. The sheath is nylon and the core is Technora. This is low stretch high strength cord. The breaking strength according to Sterling is 4,789 lbs (21.3 kN). This stuff is can take some wear and tear. I use it when there's a chance the anchor will rub against the rock. CAUTION: When looping this cord tie it with a triple fishermans knot.
