MontBell Ultralight Down Vest - Men's

MontBell Ultralight Down Vest - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 4, 2007

This was the perfect addition to my layering system. I'm a wilderness guide so I want to be wearing the best stuff out there. Looks like I found it. This vest allows me to push the limits of my summer bag. It packs up to almost the size of a red bull can. It's toasty!

Mountain Hardwear Epic Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Epic Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 4, 2007

I used this jacket almost daily for two years in all weather conditions. It's shot now (leaking quite a bit) but for the mileage I got out of it I'm satisfied. Going to buy another soon. Two notable features are: Awesome pit zips and ventilation. The deep hood and visor keeps rain out of your face. I like this better than the precip.

Osprey Packs Atmos 50 Pack - 2800-3200 cu in

Osprey Packs Atmos 50 Pack - 2800-3200 cu in

Rating for this product: 5 May 3, 2007

After hiking over 3,000 miles this year with the Atmos 50, I can attest to the quality and durability of the product. Like all Osprey packs, it takes a day or two to break in the shoulder straps, and then you’re good for a decade. I think it’s funny how outdoor gear sales people try to convince would-be customers that packs like this can’t handle the needs of extensive trips. Well, leave the canned food and the blue jeans at home and you’ll be fine. I love this pack. You get the best of the internal pack with the breathability of an external frame. If I could have any pack in the world, for long-distance hiking, it would be the Atmos 50 I already have. Sure it’s dirty and has a few small dental floss and duct tape patches, but the pack has no major issues and has treated me well. It's going to hike the CDT with me next year!

Great product

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 18, 2006

The other reviews are accurate. This jacket keeps you dry and packs up small. The only flaw I found is that after five months of intensive use (thru-hiking) the inside began to delaminate. Great over all. Durability wise... you'll need to buy a new one after using the PreCip every day on a long hike.

Marmot Original DriClime Windshirt - Men's

Marmot Original DriClime Windshirt - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 20, 2006

The driClime was the most essential piece of gear I carried this year on my PCT thru-hike. In the desert it kept me warm at night and insulated my water by day. From the Sierra north I used it almost every time I took a break. It has a great warmth to weight ratio. By my calculations a .87. Which is almost unheard of! It dries fast, differentiates you from a homeless person and offers more than I thought any jacket could offer.

Good overall

Marmot Hydrogen Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Down

Marmot Hydrogen Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 4 October 17, 2006

I hiked a little over 3000 miles this year using this sleeping bag. I spent many nights in this bag when the temp dropped to the teens. I'm not going to say I was toasty every time, but I wasn't hypothermic either. You can't beat this bags weight to warmth ratio. I could stuff it to fit into a climbing helmet, and fluff it back to life day in and day out. When it was warm out I didn't always have enough ball room... so use it as a blanket. I would highly recommend this bag. Just know its limits and your own.

GoLite Hex 3 Nest Inner Tent 3-Person

GoLite Hex 3 Nest Inner Tent 3-Person

Rating for this product: 4 October 17, 2006

Fitting three people in this "nest" would be quite a challenge. The center pole would fit approximately where the center occupant's groin would be. That being said, the Hex 3 nest is spacious for two. It’s great for sleeping out on moonless nights when the blood suckers or scorpions are on the prowl. I hiked over 2000 miles this year carrying it and don’t regret a mile. The tarp that fits over the nest is bomb proof. The nest is a necessary evil to long distance hiking in my opinion. Carry it (or something else), bathe in deet or don’t sleep. The choice is easy. I just wish go lite could develop a “liter,” less bulky version.
