Great tent

The North Face Tadpole 23 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

The North Face Tadpole 23 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 4 June 4, 2004

This tent is very light, and packs down quite small (with a tent compression sack, no less.) It looks great. Waterproofing is good (no leaks during a night of on-and-off light rain.) My single complaint is that it's a pretty tight fit for two people. It's possible, but does better as a roomy 1.5 person.

My favorite piece of gear!

Therm-a-Rest Prolite 3 Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest Prolite 3 Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 June 4, 2004

This sleeping pad makes me so happy I almost want to start crying. I've always been a light sleeper while camping.. but with this pad, I was out in 5 minutes, didn't wake up once all night long, had deep REM sleep, lots of dreams, etc. And all of this in the middle of Alaska with those crazy bears. It packs down to a _tiny_ size, and weighs absolutely nothing. All my friends jaws drop at this pad, and they all want one now. Get the stuff sack, it's helpful and well built. I have the short version, perhaps the long version will keep your feet a bit more comfy and warm, but it's not a big deal to me.

Therm-a-Rest ProLite 3 Stuff Sack

Therm-a-Rest ProLite 3 Stuff Sack

Rating for this product: 5 June 4, 2004

I've got a stuff sack for my ProLite 3 Short pad, and it does a great job. Neat material that works well for this pad. The stuff sack also folds in on itself into a little pouch while not in use. Highly reccomended.

Great pack!!

The North Face Prophet 65 Backpack - 4600 cu in

The North Face Prophet 65 Backpack - 4600 cu in

Rating for this product: 5 June 4, 2004

This thing weighs almost nothing. It adjusts easily, and the adjustments make a noticeable amount of difference. You can fit quite a bit into this bag. The hydration pouch seems a bit small, so make sure to test-fit a bladder before purchasing one. There aren't really any secure external pockets, which at first seemed restrictive - but it forces you to pack better, and keeps the bag very simple.. I now enjoy the lack of pockets as a feature. This is great for any weeklong light adventure. The description mentions some kind of "emergency bivy", but I don't have any clue what that's talking about.

Nalgene Lexan Wide Mouth Water Bottle - 32oz DO NOT USE

Taste-free, impossible to break, etc. A great bottle. I find the side-measurement labels helpful for purifying the correct amount of water.

A great combo to buy!

Package MSR WhisperLite Stove and Cookset Package

Package MSR WhisperLite Stove and Cookset Package

Rating for this product: 5 June 4, 2004

The gourmet cook set is awesome! Non-stick makes these very easy to clean. The included "pak-towels" are used to keep the pan surfaces scratch free, and can also be used to clean and dry. The WhisperLite stove is simple to use, works just like it should, and seems to burn fuel very slowly. The best part is, you can pack the Whisperlite Stove right in with the pans, and have a complete package, saving space. The weight isn't too bad at all.

Clean-up is easy!

MSR Blacklite Gourmet Cookset

MSR Blacklite Gourmet Cookset

Rating for this product: 5 June 4, 2004

The non-stick nature of this cookset makes life a breeze. This kit doesn't weight very much, either. There are "pak-towels" included to keep the pans from scratching each other. These pads work well for cleaning, scrubbing, and drying, also. I can fit my MSR Whisperlite stove inside this kit, and pack it all together to save a lot of space. Highly reccomended.

My first stove

MSR 33oz Red Fuel Bottle

MSR 33oz Red Fuel Bottle

Rating for this product: 5 June 4, 2004

This is my first fuel bottle (used with the MSR Whisperlist stove), and I have to say that I'm very impressed and happy with it. I decided to go with the liquid fuel ("white gas") because I heard that it burns more slowly and lasts longer, which seems to be true. The rate I was going, I could've cooked for a week on this single 33oz. bottle of fuel. I had luck finding fuel at Walmart and a local hardware store in their camping sections.

A great headlamp.

Princeton Tec Yukon HL Headlamp

Princeton Tec Yukon HL Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 June 4, 2004

Very light and comfortable. It's nice having the two LED modes (super bright, and battery saving.) The switch can be a little hard to hit, but it's not that big of a deal. The vertical swivel adjustment is very handy. I found the amount of light for both modes quite adequate. It's nice to use AA batteries, they're easier to find than the big block batteries in some Petzl headlamps.

A wonderful sleeping bag

Big Agnes Cross Mountain Sleeping Bag: 40 Degree Polarguard 3D

Big Agnes Cross Mountain Sleeping Bag: 40 Degree Polarguard 3D

Rating for this product: 5 June 4, 2004

This bag actually does well at 40 degrees (unlike some North Face bags which are listed at 20 degress, and can barely handle freezing.) The ability to slide your pad into the bottom of the bag is awesome! It's nice not having to worry about staying on the pad. It packs very small and is very light. I highly reccomend this as a warmer-weather bag.

MSR MIOX Purifier

MSR MIOX Purifier

Rating for this product: 4 June 4, 2004

The idea of this thing is wonderful, and it works well.. but it takes a while to get the hang of it. Once you figure it out, it does an amazing job, and is well worth the money. But make sure to practice with it at home before you go on your trip.. it'll take time to learn how to tweak it correctly.

Therm-a-Rest Lite Chair Kit

Therm-a-Rest Lite Chair Kit

Rating for this product: 5 June 4, 2004

I use this chair with a ProLite 3 Short pad. I was suspicious of how sturdy and comfortable this setup would turn out, but I actually like it quite a bit. Once you get your pad in, and get the chair straps adjusted, it easily supported my weight and took all stress off my back. Very comfortable to kick back in to read a book when you're out in the middle of nowhere.

The North Face Tadpole 23 Footprint

The North Face Tadpole 23 Footprint

Rating for this product: 5 June 4, 2004

This footprint is so small and lightweight you won't even know it's there. It's done great protecting the bottom of my tadpole tent. It's color coordinated right along with the Tadpole pole/loop colors, and is easy to use.

Great idea, very hard to use.

Rating for this product: 2 June 4, 2004

I thought this product was one of the best ideas I'd ever seen. And when you play with it, it works just like you'd expect. It works well for starting my fuel stove. But I have tried and tried and haven't been able to start a fire, even cheating a bit. I'm still determined to practice and make it work, though. But it'll be a long time before it'd be useful in starting any kind of fire in a remote situation. You'd have just as much luck with your boyscout flint and steel, I think.
