MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoe - Men's

Great 'shoes. VERY good lateral traction and very durable. You don't have to baby these babies. I also have Atlas 30" 'shoes and I much prefer my Lightning Ascent 30s.

Atlas just released the "Aspect", their copy of of the Lightning Ascent. (Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.)

Best simmering stove, PERIOD

MSR DragonFly Stove

MSR DragonFly Stove

Rating for this product: 5 November 27, 2011

I use my Dragonfly stove these days exclusiely for winter camping. It is HOT when I need to melt snow for water and it simmers very low when I want to bake with my Backpacker's Pantry Oven.

I've owned my Dragonfly since 1994 and it has never given me a problem. I did replace the original MSR pump only because I heard the newer version was more durable than my original pump. So far both still work fine.

My only quibble is that MSR did not serrate the top of the wire pot supports for better "gription"
so I filed many small Vs in the pot support topsides and all is well.

31 years and counting...

Optimus Svea Stove

Optimus Svea Stove

Rating for this product: 5 June 18, 2009

My Svea 123 is 31 years old. First backpacking stove I ever owned. Now I have 7 stoves (gulp!). Haven't used it in a decade except to fire it up to keep it in good shape. With the optional pump to prime it it's a great stove. ULTRA reliable.

Can't belive it's so peicey now. I must have paid $30. for it in '78. I still have my much-used companion SIGG TOURIST cookset that was made for the SVEA 123. Brings back old memories.

Brunton Flex - the Crux updated

Brunton Flex Canister Stove

Brunton Flex Canister Stove

Rating for this product: 4 June 18, 2009

I bought the Brunton Flex because it had more and wider pot supports and a tighter spring-loaded sleeve to hold the burner upright. No more burner wobble as has been reported with the Crux. I put a tiny bit of motor oil on the sleeve to keep it from galling and wearing. I want it to stay tight. Motor oil should be unaffected by the heat of the stem when in use.

I was using a slightly (.7 oz.) lighter Vargo Jet-Ti burner but the Crux had better pot supports and a wider flame ring for more even heating.

I like this burner and its great controllability and, if needed, higher heat output with the larger burner ring. Very well re-designed by Brunton and a bit lighter than the Crux,

Brunton Flex Canister Stove

I haven't found another top-of-canister burner with the wide burner ring like the Flex has, OR the wide pot supports. Is ther one out there? Couldn't find it in Zen Stoves.com
