Great Piece

Horny Toad Roark 1/4-Zip Sweater - Men's

Horny Toad Roark 1/4-Zip Sweater - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 12, 2011

This sweater is a great piece. I just got it and have already worn it many times. The merino regulates my temperature nicely, never too warm or too cool, and has done a good job with moisture control. This sweater is super soft to boot, I was a little concerned, but wearing it with just a t-shirt underneath was very comfortable. I think this will also work very well as a layering piece for those cold days this winter. The only reason I dropped a star is its a little pricey. But, if you can get past that you will love having this in your closet.

Heafty

Leatherman Wave Multi-Tool

Leatherman Wave Multi-Tool

Rating for this product: 3 October 12, 2011

I hesitated to give this thing only three stars. I have had it for years, and for years it has been up to every job I have thrown at it. It has just about all of the tools you could ask for. My complaints are only two. The first being, they need to get rid of that ridiculous saw. It is good for nothing but frustration and slipping and cutting your fingers. In a pinch it can be used to loose a s'mores stick from a tree, but in general anything you would use it for can be done just as quickly and easily with the knife. The second complaint is the weight/heft of this thing. It is far too heavy for me to justify putting it in my pack and as such I don't get nearly as much use out of it as I should. Thus the three stars for form not function.

Keeps it Dry

Sea To Summit Ultra-light Siliconized Pack Cover DO NOT USE

Sea To Summit Ultra-light Siliconized Pack Cover DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 4 October 10, 2011

Have two of these one XS and one S. They work very well. All of the contents stay dry. Not all sizes have the mid back keeper strap (xs does not), but this did not affect the cover's ability to stay on the pack. Rain beads up and rolls right off the cover and it bundles up very small into a pack that is attached to the cover, so you can't lose it. All in all a good cover that doesn't take up much room in your pack.

Salomon Shogun Ski

The Shogun will is much better for trees. It is very poppy and fun to ski. It also is pretty tough and busts through crud and bumps pretty well. The sentinel would be a better ski for ripping groomers. If you are trying to get away from racing style skis you might as well go all the way. Get the Shoguns.

Nite Ize Figure 9 Rope Tightener - Small

Rating for this product: 4 September 1, 2011

A little tricky to use the first time, but the instructions are etched onto the unit so you don't have to worry about losing the instructions. I used these to tie down loads in the back of the car while moving and even after a 60+ mile drive they hadn't loosened at all. They are super light weight and don't take up any room in your pack.

Garmont Eclipse III GTX Hiking Shoe - Men's

Garmont Eclipse III GTX Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 June 26, 2011

Don't let the description fool you, these things are boots, not shoes. They will go anywhere and have a very rigid sole. I have done 15mi with a pack on and had no foot problems. One bonus for me is that there is plenty of room in the toe box, your toenails will thank you on the descent. the only reason I deducted a star is because it took me a while to break them in, so take them on a coupler of 5 milers before you really go for it with them.

Great Day Pack, Careful with the sizing

Black Diamond Nitro Backpack - 1340-1465cu in

Black Diamond Nitro Backpack - 1340-1465cu in

Rating for this product: 5 April 27, 2011

Great pack. Plenty of room for everything you need for a day. Hydration compatible and light weight. The pocket on the front of the pack is perfect for strapping a shell onto the outside of your pack for easy access. The pack is a little heavy for its size but makes up for it by being extremely comfortable. The ice axe straps are pretty light weight but have a double loop, the smaller one is perfect for hauling trekking poles. The sternum and waist straps make the pack stay put.

Only complaint is that I had to exchange for the large size as the waist belt on the medium only goes up to 34" If you are in that range I would recommend sizing up as the Large does go down below 34" and the torso length is not that long (I am 5'9" and it fits fine.)

One additional nicety that would be good on the next version is a small map pocket on the top of the pack that can be accessed without taking the pack off.

I have strapped them to the back of my Osprey Atmos as well as an old Camelbak Snobound. I would pick something that has some external straps as they are pretty large and the traction rails could do a number on your pack. It is much easier to strap them to the outside of your pack

Great Knife

SOG Knives Visionary 2 Knife

SOG Knives Visionary 2 Knife

Rating for this product: 4 April 14, 2011

Super light weight knife. All of the weight is in the blade. The handle is rugged but light weight. It sits deep in your pocket so that it is not obvious that you are carrying a knife. The weight makes it very good for hiking. My only complaint is that I wish it came with a serrated blade which would make cutting rope much easier.

Breathes Great

Giro G10 MX Helmet

Giro G10 MX Helmet

Rating for this product: 4 February 9, 2011

Fist the positives. The helmet breathes great, is super light weight and has adjustable vents that keep you warm on the lift and can let out some heat if you decide to hike to a side country stash. As far as features i would like improved, for the most part the helmet is comfortable, but the adjustable strap in the back of the helmet is slightly uncomfortable against the head. I just switched from the Giro Omen, which had a neck roll in the back, that was much more comfortable. Also the ventilation thermostat is very difficult to adjust with gloves on.

I love the functionality of the brim for skiing in the woods, but one unforeseen minus is that I can no longer lift my goggles and put them on my helmet for tram rides and quick trips indoors.

Kahtoola MICROspike Traction System

Rating for this product: 5 February 9, 2011

I used these this past weekend for shoveling the driveway and pushing a car that was stuck. They provided great grip on the hard packed snow and ice. They were usable on the dry pavement, though I would not choose to walk any distance that way. The best feature is that I can put them on and take them off with one hand without sitting down.

Rock Solid in Soft Snow

Salomon Shogun Ski

Salomon Shogun Ski

Rating for this product: 4 February 1, 2011

Took these out in a 182 this past weekend up at Cannon Mountain in NH. For such a wide ski, 101 under foot in the 182s, they are relatively easy to get from edge to edge. The bamboo makes for a light ski that is forgiving without losing too much responsiveness. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't want to ski these all day on hard pack. The conditions were loose snow with some soft bumps, and these skis were perfect. On trail, off trail, and in the woods the skis excelled. They were very maneuverable and had no problem floating over the soft bumps.

Best fitting foot-beds out there

Sole Softec Response Footbed

Sole Softec Response Footbed

Rating for this product: 5 January 17, 2011

Bought a pair of these about a month ago to use in some trail running shoes. They broke in relatively quickly, only ~10 miles or so. They are incredibly comfortable and help with my supination. Two points of advice:

1) They are relatively high volume, so make sure you have room in the shoes you plan to use.
2) Don't overuse them while breaking them in. They caused quite a bit of pain after i used them for a five mile run the first time out.

Salomon XT Wings 2 Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 3, 2011

I had switched away from Salomon trail runners looking for something with at sole that would last longer. After going through a pair of a pair of Merrell's and a pair of Montrail's which lasted a bit longer, I'm back to the Salomon. Simple fact is, I haven't found a trail runner out there that is more comfortable and supportive than these.

I just got a pair and I found the size to be about 1/2 size small. I tried them on side by side with the XA Pros and found the sizing to be about 1/2 size different.

As far as running on the road, you would be fine, but the soft rubber soles would take some unnecessary wear.

Looks & Feels GREAT!!

Arc'teryx Covert Zip-Neck Sweater - Men's

Arc'teryx Covert Zip-Neck Sweater - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 27, 2010

This is hands down the best fleece I have owned. I bought it wanting something I could wear casually and use as a layering piece for resort skiing. This piece is perfect. It breathes well and is incredibly warm. Best part is that the shirt is incredibly soft, I can wear it right against my skin without having to worry about itch from wool or seams. At the end of the day I take off my shell and am ready to hit the apres scene. The fit is atypical for Arc'teryx. I have tried on many pieces before and all have not fit well, too slender. This piece offers a much fuller cut and is a bit shorter. I am 5'9" 200lb and the large fits perfectly.Did I mention this thing is warm?

Icebreaker Hike Lite Crew Sock - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 December 27, 2010

I bought a pair of these a couple of months ago and have worn them ~ half a dozen times since. The socks are plenty warm for outdoor activity, unfortunately I have relegated them to casual/around the house wear because I have trouble getting them to stay in place, they tend to bunch up under my arch. They wick moisture well and like all merino resist odor well. They are a great sock for some apres action.

Darn Tough Merino Wool Micro Crew Cushion Hiking Sock - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 27, 2010

These socks are great. If you have never owned Darn Tough socks before do yourself a favor and buy a pair. The fit is better than any other sock on the market. They manage to get the socks tight without being uncomfortable, so that the sock never budges on your foot. My only complaint is that these socks are almost too warm for me. If I am exercising my feet sweat too much for the socks to properly wick.

Watch Out for Trees

Salomon Lord Ski

Salomon Lord Ski

Rating for this product: 4 December 20, 2010

I demoed these skis last weekend up in NH in 177. They were a little shorter than I usually ski, but skied WAY shorter. They felt very lightweight and easy to turn, were great in the bumps and made short radius turns with ease. They held tight on the groomers and were fairly damp and stable. They never let go on the hard-pack or ice but they also didn't inspire a tremendous amount of confidence. Last word is this would be a great fun ski to take around the east coast woods, zipping in and out of trees. If you stick mostly to groomers or charge big lines I would look elsewhere.

Not that this should really count but th embroidered logo was also pretty cool.

Mountain Hardwear WindStopper Tech Vest - Men's

December 16, 2010

It depends where you are running and how warm you get. This vest is super warm. I run warm and would overheat on trails above 40 degrees. If you have trouble staying warm this would be perfect. It fits close to the body and does not inhibit movement. I wear it more frequently for hiking and as a mid layer for skiing. All that said this is an awesome vest so I guess it comes down to temperature and personal preference.

If there is water leaking through the boot it means there must be a hole in the Gore-Tex insert that is in the boot. Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 26, 2010

I usually go through a pair of trail runners each year and these are by far the most comfortable I have ever owned. The quick-lace system looked quirky at first, but it one of the most elegant solutions to lacing I have ever seen. One pull and it tightens perfectly, no hot spots, and stays tight. The one flaw is that the soles wear out so quickly. They do grip very will on most surfaces, so i guess that is the price you pay.

ExOfficio Give-N-Go Boxer - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 November 23, 2010

I bought these just before a trip to Central America. They were good for the job. They do a great job keeping you dry. As with most things I have bought from Ex-Officio they run quite large. The fit is also a little strange, they stay in place when used for hiking or running, but if you wear them on a long car trip or flight they have a tendency to bunch up and become uncomfortable. If that is your intended purpose I would look at the Give-N-Go Boxer Brief as they have a tighter fit and would stay in place better.

Folds easily and holds it's shape after use. Dries very quickly so that you can put it back in your pack. It is one of the few items that never leaves my pack just in case.

CamelBak Omega HydroTanium Hydration Reservoir

CamelBak Omega HydroTanium Hydration Reservoir

Rating for this product: 5 November 9, 2010

Bought this as a replacement for a bladder that developed a hole. The first time I used it the thing that struck me is the taste of the water, it was perfect. In addition the large mouth makes cleaning very easy as well as allowing you to add ice to the reservoir.

DAKINE Fall Line Double Ski Bag

DAKINE Fall Line Double Ski Bag

Rating for this product: 4 November 9, 2010

It would be incredibly tricky to fit two pairs of skis as well as boots into this bag. Most of the time i put my two pairs into the bag as well as the rest of my gear. I then carry a boot bag where I can put some clothes. I have used this combo for quite a few trips, both on the road and in the air and it has worked great.

DAKINE Fall Line Double Ski Bag

November 9, 2010

If you are talking about cross country boots that you shouldn't have any problem fitting them into the pockets on the outside. If you are talking about alpine boots you may have to buy it a size too long and fit them into the main compartment.

Leatherman Juice S2 Multi-Tool

Leatherman Juice S2 Multi-Tool

Rating for this product: 4 November 8, 2010

The only tool I ever carry with me. It has everything you need for the trail and nothing you don't. It is not actually small enough to hang from your car keys, and I'm not really sure why it has the loop but other than that it is great.

Only reasons it didn't get 5 stars is that it is a little heavy.

Thule Peloton Bike Mount

This rack is only designed to fit on square cross bars. Most factory racks have some flattened oval shaped cross bars. Thule makes an adapter called the ride on to convert from this shape to square. Then the racks will fit.

Therm-a-Rest BaseCamp Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest BaseCamp Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 4 November 7, 2010

I have both this pad and the Ridge Rest. Personally I prefer the Ridge Rest, I find it more comfortable, and I don't have to worry about it getting damaged, plus it is much cheaper.

That said, there is nothing wrong with this pad. It is comfortable and keeps me warm in temps much below freezing.

I have one this sleeping pad as well as a self inflating Therm-a-Rest, the Base Camp model. I find myself using this one much more often. The R Value on this is not as high, but I have used it in temperatures below freezing and have never had any problems. Plus it is much lighter weight.

Coleman Deluxe PerfectFlow Lantern w/ Hard Carry Case

Coleman Deluxe PerfectFlow Lantern w/ Hard Carry Case

Rating for this product: 3 November 7, 2010

This is the classic propane lantern, pretty much the same one that I remember my parents having when I was a kid. The lantern emits tons of light and can light up an entire campsite easily. That said there are quite a few downfalls. The glass globe is very fragile, I have gone through a couple already. The lantern globe and lid also gets very, very hot and takes a while to cool down after use. Finally, make sure you have a good number of mantles on hand as they are pretty much disposable.

Just like the grill at home

Coleman RoadTrip Grill LX

Coleman RoadTrip Grill LX

Rating for this product: 4 November 7, 2010

This grill is great for tailgating or camping. It works just like a full size grill, the heat is even throughout the cooking area and it gets HOT. It will run off a full size propane tank, but using the 1 lb tanks it lasts a couple of hours. Folds up small and is easy to travel with.

Didn't give it the full five because it has a tendency to pop open when I am trying to carry it, and my first unit developed a defective valve after a few uses. Coleman did take care of the valve, so I guess I cannot hold that against them.

HI Yellow for the NE

Oakley Crowbar Goggle

Oakley Crowbar Goggle

Rating for this product: 5 November 6, 2010

I bought these to replace my lost pair of Oakley Wisdoms (the best goggle ever made). I have used them for a few seasons now and am smitten. They fit well both over a hat or a helmet.

The high intensity yellow lens is perfect for New England. The lens does not block much of the little light that exists out here and does a great job exaggerating the features in the terrain. If planning on skiing out west or in Europe I would not recommend this lens as it would not block enough of the sun.

Giro 2008 Omen Helmet

Giro 2008 Omen Helmet

Rating for this product: 5 November 6, 2010

I bought this helmet because I tend to run quite warm when skiing but ski the east so it was important that it be able to keep me warm on those frigid days. It performs admirably in both conditions. It is a super warm helmet, my only complaint being that when a strong wind picks up sometimes some comes in through the ear flap. When you start to heat up just slide the lever on the top of the helmet and viola ventilation. On those warm spring days you can detach the ear flaps altogether. I wore the helmet comfortably last April in temps that were 70+

Asolo TPS 520 GV Boot - Men's

November 6, 2010

No they are not. You could use a strap on type such as Petzl Irvis 10-Point Crampon, but if you are looking to do some really serious mountaineering then you may want to look elsewhere. Otherwise these boots are relatively warm for an uninsulated boot and plenty stiff to use for most outdoor activities.

Looks Great, Protects Better

Patagonia Stretch Ascent Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Stretch Ascent Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 2, 2010

Just got this jacket in the mail and took it on a overnight in the Whites. With a light baselayer and light fleece underneath the shell did a great job protecting from the elements in temps down below freezing. The hood adjustment works well. Even cooler are the drawcords on the hem are routed through the pockets, so that you can cinch the waist without taking your hands out of the pockets. The pockets are huge, plenty big enough to fit a map without having to bend it and are high enough to allow them to function even while wearing a pack.

Fits well, I am 5'9" 210lb and the large is a great fit. The slim fit means that there is plenty of room in the chest and shoulders but the waistline is slimmer. This seems like a good feature as it helps keep out the cold air.

These are by far the best ski socks I have ever owned. They fit will and stay put. There is never any bunching inside your ski boot. They keep my feet comfortable all day and don't smell terrible when the day is done.

They are not the warmest socks available, but that means I can use them for hiking as well without ending up with soaked feet.

They actually work

CW-X Pro Tights - Men's

CW-X Pro Tights - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 30, 2010

These tights are fantastic. I wore them last year for ~35 days on the slopes. They don't show any signs of wear yet. They are the perfect weight, not to warm, and they do wonders keeping the sweat away from your body while skinning. I have taken to wearing them while hiking now as well and my legs are much less sore at the end of a long day.

My only complaint, which I feel is fairly significant, is that the waist will not stay in place. I can constantly feel the pants falling down. There should be some type of elastic in the waistband that would help them stay up. As a result I have to pull the drawcord very tight which makes it extremely difficult to go to the bathroom as I always have either hiking pants or ski pants on top.

Rating for this product: 5 October 29, 2010

I debated between this box and the 1800 thinking all that I would need to transport are my skis. Since purchasing I have had no regrets, being able to use this for many other uses, camping, vacations, moving etc. It frequently saves me from having to take 2 cars on trips making it more than worth the fuel economy that is sacrificed, 2-3 mpg on either of my cars, Subaru and a sedan.

Easy

Thule Ride-On Adapter

Thule Ride-On Adapter

Rating for this product: 4 October 29, 2010

Very easy to use. I don't know what Anonymous is talking about but the system is EXTREMELY stable on the roof, I have left it on my Subaru for extended periods of time with no worry that it would come loose. It is also very easy to install, ~5 minutes including mounting the bikes.

The only reason I held back the fifth star is that there should be an easier way to adapt a rack system without having to add a whole second set of bars to the roof.

Thule Short Roof Adapter-DO NOT USE

Thule Short Roof Adapter-DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 2 October 29, 2010

Sometimes you pick the car before the function. This is one of those times. I was saddled with a car in which I had no choice but to use the short roof adapter. It is VERY difficult to get into a stable position on the roof. I have had quite a few problems getting the system to properly engage on the roof, even resulting in a situation where the system came loose and did a substantial amount of damage to the roof of my car. Recommendation #1, don't buy a car that requires this system, but if you are already on this product, recommendation #2, be careful or possibly order a different brand system.

Petzl Tikka XP 2 Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 October 28, 2010

This light is exceptionally bright. It is also very light, it one of the very few things that is always in my pack.

Battery life is excellent. I use this regularly not just for camping but for walking on the road at night, working on tight spaces in my basement or attic, and I only replace the batteries about once a year! The only feature I'm not sold on is the wide angle lens, it doesn't seem to give much more coverage, but it does make the light dimmer.

MSR Evo Ascent Snowshoe

MSR Evo Ascent Snowshoe

Rating for this product: 5 October 26, 2010

I received these as a gift last year for Christmas. I was concerned about the amount of float they would provide, being 210lb + gear. My first trip out was on Mount Washington with about 8" of fresh snow. The heel lifters and Traction Rails were incredible. It was easier than hiking on dry ground. There was no slipping at all. The straps never needed retightening. The only minor complaint is that the heel lifters are difficult to disengage while wearing gloves. Other than that there was very little to think about because these just worked.

Asolo TPS 520 GV Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 26, 2010

I bought these boots after trying on more than 2 dozen different designs. I had almost given up on Asolo's as all of the rest of their boots were too narrow for my feet. I eventually tried these on and instantly fell in love. Great fit, no hot points, no heel lift. Best of all, no break in period. I wore them out the day after getting them on a 10 miler in the Whites and had no issues.

The Gore Tex keeps you're feet dry no matter what and still breathe, I have worn these comfortably for hikes in temperatures from 10-80 degrees. Also works great with snow shoes.

I bought this bottle in the Swiss Cross style. The bottle works very well, though as stated in other reviews it does dent very easily if dropped. IMO it gives the bottle character, but to each their own.

The bottle is very easy to drink out of as the shape of the neck fits very well, there is almost no spilling. Also, most importantly I have had no problems with tastes that should not be there.

Laken Prisma Bottle w/Screw Top - 1L

Rating for this product: 3 October 26, 2010

I bought one of these as well as a Sigg. I used this bottle daily at work as well as on a couple of hiking trips. The bottle worked great, no unexpected tastes. Slightly difficult to drink out of as the large external threads on the lip of the bottle let water slip by. Also the bottle dents quite easily if you drop it, though not as easily as the Sigg bottle. I didn't mind as it added some character to the bottle. The real problem came roughly 6 months later. Some pitting began to develop on the liner of the bottle. I tried everything to remove it but was not successful. Ultimately I threw it away as the water started to take on a plastic taste when i drank. It does not seem the others who have reviewed this product had the same problem, just reporting what happened.
