The North Face Millennial Boot - Women's

November 19, 2011

Hi Rachel - the top of the boot is about 13 inches circumference. That's about average, but the lace up style also helps to adjust the boot to a proper fit. :)

NRS Hydroskin Sock

November 10, 2011

Hi Jim - I've been careful with washing mine, mostly using cold water with a gentle rinse and drying them on low heat. However, my boyfriend washes his the same way he does all his clothes - hot water and high heat and he hasn't noticed them wearing out on him yet. We've had our socks since March and been white water rafting a lot this summer with them.

POC Lobes Goggle Replacement Lens

November 10, 2011

Hi! I agree, I like the pink mirror most of the time but they're not so great in flat light. Of the lenses listed here on BC, I like using the gold mirror when that happens. It's pretty good at increasing contrast and depth perception in flat light.

Roxy Mayfair Boot - Women's

November 3, 2011

Hi - it varies slightly depending on size. On a size 8.5 boot, it's 11.75" high with a 15.5" shaft circumference. On a size 6 boot it's a half inch shorter and an inch smaller in circumference. So give or take a little depending on what size you are.
Hope this helps! :)

The North Face Abby III Boot - Women's

October 31, 2011

Hi - these would work fine for snowmobiling because they are both insulated and waterproof. I would recommend wearing them with a thick sock. However, this is not the North Face's *warmest* boot - if you plan on being out for hours and your winters are cold (0 degrees is a nice day where I'm from), I would definitely recommend looking into a boot that's rated for negative temps. :)

The North Face Better Than Naked Crew Top - Short-Sleeve - Women's

October 29, 2011

Hi Jane - TNF has Better than Naked shorts, but not pants. Here are the shorts if you're interested:

If you're looking for pants, I would highly recommend the North Face Impulse Pants:

In my experience they've worked similarly well to the Better than Naked shirt, keeping my legs warm during fall runs while also wicking away sweat very well. They are also lightweight and comfortable. :)

Columbia Snow Raid Mitten - Kids'

October 28, 2011

Hi Amy - Lettered glove sizes (XS, S, M, L) roughly correspond to age via their numbered sizes (XS is 4-6, S is 6-8, M is 8-10, L is 10-12). However, because kids of the same age can come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, I HIGHLY recommend that instead of estimating by age, you should find out what the child's usual size in apparel is - the apparel size will be equivalent to the glove size needed. If you're unsure what the child's clothing size is, you can refer to Columbia's sizing chart:
http://www.backcountry.com/store/sizingchart.html?sizing_id=264&sku=COL3297&pg_id=100000058&subcat_id=100000033&cat_id=100000008

Patagonia Micro Puff Hooded Jacket - Women's

October 27, 2011

Hi! I can totally sympathize with you - I'm also small and skinny so I'm cold all the time too! The good thing, though, is that even the XS size jackets will let you fit more layers underneath than usual. :)

If you're concerned about warmth and trying to decide between the two, I would go with the Patagonia Pipe Down jacket. The Patagonia Micro Puff jacket is warm enough for temps in the teens but not for very much lower than that, especially if the winds are brutal. Otherwise, I would highly recommend checking out the other jackets that Backcountry offers. There are a few other options that are at least as warm as the Pipe Down jacket but at a lower cost. :)

Columbia Mercury Maven Long Down Jacket - Women's

October 27, 2011

Hi - the center back measurement measures the bodice part of the coat. It's from the cervical vertebra (about where your neck meets your shoulders) to the waist. The XS falls about 3 inches above the knee for me (I'm 5'2"), but it may depend on how tall your daughters are. Here's a picture of the coat on a model --

If you post the height/measurements of your daughters, someone with similar measurements might be able to give you a more precise answer. :)

Chrome Mini Metro Messenger Bag

Chrome Mini Metro Messenger Bag

Rating for this product: 5 October 23, 2011

Love this bag! I once wandered around Korea (hours of walking!) for a week with only this. It might say "Mini" but it's not really that small - I fit my 15" Macbook Pro, a DSLR, a couple paperback books to read, and a few changes of clothes. In fact it looks a bit big on me (I'm a wimpy 5'2" girl), but I think it looks *perfect* on my 6'5" guy BFF. The strap comes across your chest, slung onto your shoulder on one side and coming around the waist on the other side. The strap is easy to adjust and even when it's stuffed with all my things the strap is comfortable and doesn't dig into my shoulder.

Deceptively spacious, comfortable to carry, waterproof and very durable - and I dig its subdued style.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

DAKINE Sequence Backpack with Camera Block - 2000cu in

DAKINE Sequence Backpack with Camera Block - 2000cu in

Rating for this product: 5 October 22, 2011

I've fallen backwards while wearing this bag, slept on it, stepped on it, had it thrown by someone who didn't know that thousands of dollars in photog gear was inside (gah!!!), and miserably watched it being tossed around after I checked it in onto a plane that was so small that they didn't allow carry-on luggage (IMPORTANT: none of the above actions are recommended) BUT my gear has always remained perfectly intact and safely snuggled up in the impenetrable fortress that is the Dakine Sequence backpack.

I've traveled around the world with it - I take out the camera block and stuff my clothes and other belongings into the bag. The bag can be checked in but because I've had too many experiences with airlines temporarily losing my stuff, I prefer to not check in any luggage and instead I take it with me as my carry-on luggage with the camera block as my extra "purse" allowance (or "laptop bag" etc, if you're a guy). You look like just another student backpacker, so no one suspects that you're carrying gear worth more than a first class plane ticket and a few nights at a five star hotel.

The back access is excellent! Some people might prefer the sling style, but I definitely like knowing that no thieves can get to my gear. The sling style can be useful and that's why photographers tend to collect an annoying amount of bags to suit different situations, but the back access is definitely tops - ESPECIALLY if you're into backcountry riding. Just throw down your bag (rain cover optional - my bag has always survived a rest in the snow), unzip from the back, and you're ready to shoot!

I also dig all the pockets and straps for goggles, my snowboard, a tripod, snacks, lens caps, etc. This model, unlike the previous years', actually has the laptop sleeve that many have asked for. Note that I've not gone snowboarding with this year's model yet - nor have I taken my laptop with me when riding with last year's model - but seriously, you're out to RIDE and maybe take a few nice pictures, not to check facebook and post process.

Anyway, yeah. This is the second time I've bought this bag - for my boyfriend because he was way jealous of mine. The ONLY gripe I have about this is that as a 5'2", skinny (read: super wimpy) girl, this bag could sometimes get heavy. It's 5lbs alone, so stuffing it with camera gear while snowboarding (much less stuffing it with clothes and other belongings, while carrying a fully filled camera block on your shoulder, then walking for a few hours, owww) could turn it into a possibly tiring load. But that's what a nice boyfriend is for, right? ;) Otherwise, I'm pretty certain that no respectable snowboarder/hiker/backpacker can be as wimpy as me and YOU, dear reader, can certainly take this awesome piece of gear wherever you wish.

The North Face Resolve Jacket - Women's

The North Face Apex Bionic Softshell Jacket - Women's

October 22, 2011

If you happen to be a Medium, bc has a sale on the TNF Hibachi, which is veryyy comfy and wind/water-resistant:

Otherwise I recently tried the TNF Jacqui's Jacket which is closer to the styling of the Apex Bionic, and which I felt was about as warm and wind-proof:

If you don't mind something outside of the TNF brand, you could consider these Marmot jackets:

The North Face Windwall 1 Fleece Jacket - Women's

October 22, 2011

Hi Becky. I don't think there's an official cold rating for this jacket - however I have gone running in this when it was ~20 degrees and a bit windy and it kept me warm. It'll keep you warm from the 40s-60s with a 10-15mph wind, but anything colder will probably depend on what temps you're used to and how active you'll be when using the jacket.

The North Face Pumori Fleece Jacket - Women's

October 22, 2011

I'm not sure what you mean by "better" - but in my experience the Khumbu is a little warmer and thicker than the Pumori, although the Pumori is noticeably softer and a bit lighter. I like the styling and the fit of the Pumori except it has a wider neck than my Khumbu jacket. Also it's sooo soft, I just want to nuzzle myself - although I do like the fleece cuffs on the Khumbu.

Basically I find them interchangeable except for the minor styling details and colors. If you still can't decide, Backcountry has a pretty good return policy so you could get both and return the one you don't want. :)
