Stoic Somnus 30 Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Down

November 15, 2011

I have last years bag, but it's still awesome! I also have the 15 in this years model. Both bags are awesome. This is a picture of the 30 in cold rainy weather with an REI bivy sack. The bivy worked well with the bag... They both have the same zipper style, so it works even better.

Therm-a-Rest Z Lite Sleeping Pad

August 2, 2011

Although I'm a side sleeper, and don't use this on it's own to sleep on... I do use it for (snow) camp life. Digging a nice chair, or couch and adding this makes everything awesome. For extra warmth, I add this to the top of my 4 season pad.

Mountain Hardwear Dragon Softshell Jacket - Men's

March 3, 2011

This is by far the most used jacket in my collection. I've used it for mountaineering, hiking, backpacking, snowshoeing, around town, and goiong out. It's a great looking jacket with some great pockets. The look is very nice, and it performs above all. The pit zips are perfect for warmer days, and it's keeps the snow/light rain off you. This is a must have for any avid outdoor rockstar.

Chaco Z/1 Unaweep Sandal - Men's

Chaco Z/1 Unaweep Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 21, 2012

These are really awesome! I would like to note that in some cases, well mostly my case, and a couple friends... you will need to break your foot into these if you plan on putting some serious backpacking miles on them. I've done over 20 miles in a single day with a pack, and paid for it the next day. Now, however... I can do that without any "next day" pain. These are also awesome for Disneyland!

Great backpacking boot!

Asolo FSN 95 GTX Boot - Men's

Asolo FSN 95 GTX Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 6, 2012

Great boots... Tons of backpacking miles on them and they are still in great shape. The Gore-Tex is amazing and let's the feet breath very well. My only complaint is the sole. They have a great sole, but it's not Vibram. I've been to the top of Half Dome with these, and the climb up on the slick rock was perfect, so I guess it may not be that big of a down fall. Perfect boot though... Asolos are the best!

Perfect for my wife...

Black Diamond Contour Elliptic Shock Trekking Pole

Black Diamond Contour Elliptic Shock Trekking Pole

Rating for this product: 4 February 21, 2012

When choosing trekking poles, I usually go with something a bit strongger than the normal. With that being said, I decided to buy a men's pair of poles for my wife, and these seem to fit the bill well for her. She mostly uses poles for snowshoeing. For everyone's knowledge, these do not come with baskets... or, if they do... I did not get any. I ended up just buying a set of BD universal baskets for them. The "shock" thing is pretty cool, but I'm not too sure how helpful it is... My wife doesn't even notice them. She does really like the lower grip though.

Nalgene Wide Mouth Tritan Bottle - 32oz

Rating for this product: 5 December 13, 2011

I take my Nalgene with me everywhere. It's great for everyday, all day use. On our freezing cold Mountaineering trips, we fill it up with boiling hot water and toss it to the bottom of our sleeping bag for extra warmth. In the morning, or in the middle of the night, I have water that's not freezing cold. Buy one! Nuff said.

This is my second Stoic sleeping bag...

Stoic Somnus 15 Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

Stoic Somnus 15 Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 4 November 3, 2011

I love it. I now have the older 30 degree, and now this one. I love the weight of the bag, and the top zipper. The material seems pretty thin, but I have not had any trouble with my 30, so I'm guessing this will work just as well. I only sleep out under the stars with these bags, and with the weight savings on these super light down bags, I've somewhat turned into a very light backpacker. Love it! (I did get the bag on sale, thgouh)

Therm-a-Rest Z Lite Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest Z Lite Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 4 August 2, 2011

I use this more for camp life, or taking a break on a snow field. I sleep on my side, and I'm a large man, so I tend to use this in conjunction with another air type pad. I've never tried this over night on its own, but laying on it around camp proves it would be a really bad nights sleep. Awesome for what it is... just not a true sleeping pad for me.

Black Diamond Orbit Lantern

Rating for this product: 4 August 2, 2011

This little light is perfect for night time gathering of gear in your tent, or a alpine start. I've used it on a ton of mountaineering trips when there isn't any moon light or when you're trying to put on clothes early in the morning. A head lamp is really all you need, but this is truly a luxury item. Love it... 4 stars for battery life.

CamelBak Mini M.U.L.E. Hydration Pack - Kids'

Rating for this product: 4 August 1, 2011

My 4 year old daughter loves this thing. Perfect size for her, and the added pocket for snacks is a huge plus. The only down fall is the bite valve. My daughter was sharing water with my 2 year old son. Within 5 minutes of use, my son bit all the way through the valve. The hose now leaks if the bite valve is turned on. Easy, and cheap fix... lesson learned.

I just got back from a climb up Mt. Shasta with these. I wore them with a nice base layer and they were perfect for my climb. The side zips are awesome and dump heat well while on your ascent. They dry really fast which is nice. Only thing I don't/didn't like was the velcro, but I cut all of the tabs out. Awesome cold weather pant.

MSR Evo Ascent Snowshoe

MSR Evo Ascent Snowshoe

Rating for this product: 4 May 19, 2011

I’ve tried a ton of different snowshoes out there, and these are by far the most versatile. They are nice and light, so you won’t mind attaching them to your backpack just in case your nemesis, the posthole come out. I also like the fact that you can add 4” or 6” fins to them for added floatation in the fluffiest powder. The fact that they are a flexible plastic and don’t have a ton of rivets makes them a little safer in the backcountry without bringing a ton of repair gear. I’m 6’ 1” tall and weigh 245lbs without gear, and close to 300lbs with my mountaineering pack. With the added 6” fins, I’m perfectly on top of the snow with a ton of weight. I keep them off when I’m strolling around with only a small daypack. These are awesome. You will not be sorry.

THE BEST!!!

Mountain Hardwear Dome Perignon Beanie

Mountain Hardwear Dome Perignon Beanie

Rating for this product: 5 May 19, 2011

This is by far the best winter hat on the market. I've been in freezing cold temps with the snow blowing sideways, and my ears have stayed warm. The Wind stopper membrane in the outer band is awesome. Please note that it cuts down noise significantly, so if you really need to listen for something, take it off. The top of the hat looks a little funny… kind of a cone head look, but I’m not out to look all GQ on the mountain. If you need a nice winter warm hat, do yourself a favor and pick this one up.

I’ve used these pants for a couple of seasons now. I’ve been to Sierra’s in the summer, the top of Half Dome in Yosemite in the fall, and the Grand Canyon in early winter. These pants are awesome. Warmish when it’s cold outside, and cool in the summer. They dry really fast and seem to be extremely durable. I’d definitely by these again. Great job on a great pant The North Face!

Awesome glass, but Rx beware!!!

Julbo Montebianco Sunglasses - Spectron 4 Lens

Julbo Montebianco Sunglasses - Spectron 4 Lens

Rating for this product: 4 May 19, 2011

I got these glasses intending to add some prescription lenses to them. Mind you, I live in a rather urban area of northern Los Angeles, and finding a place that digitally cuts the lens was almost impossible. After I was able to find a place to do it, it was going to be over $500 not including the cost of the frames. There were extra costs added in for scratch resistance, polarization, and snow mirroring, but come! On to the glasses… They are awesome! They fit my large face really well, and are extremely light and comfortable. I recommend them to anyone with a medium sized face and above. My wife has a rather small face, and they fit her, they just look a little over the top big on her face. Julbo makes some awesome French made glasses, and their customer service is top notch. I called to order a strap for these glasses, and they sent it to me free of charge! That’s really rare these days.

Please note that I wear these glasses for mountaineering, backpacking, and snowshoeing. I also have them on whenever I decide to wear my contacts. They fit great, are made extremely well, and look damn good!!!

Marmot Randonnee Glove

Rating for this product: 4 May 17, 2011

These gloves perform great. I've used them many times in Sierras' wet snow. The Gore-Tex is awesome, but remember the glove will wet out. Your hands will stay dry, but the glove will remain wet. I do not use these for skiing, I use them for building snow shelters, and showshoeing. Great gloves.

WOW, these are warm!

Mountain Hardwear Masherbrum Mitten

Mountain Hardwear Masherbrum Mitten

Rating for this product: 5 May 12, 2011

I have extremely cold hands. I’m a rather large guy, that is extremely active, so you would think that the whole cold hands thing would happen. Not true. Anything under around 20 degrees with a slight wind, and my hands are freezing. I can be extremely warm with all the appropriate gear on, and still have extremely cold hands. I bought these on a whim, and have never looked back. Please note that I have not climbed Denali in them, nor have I summated K2 with these on. I’m a weekend warrior that goes to the California Sierra’s. I mountaineer during our cold months and backpack in our warm months. When on snowshoe trips in Yosemite, I use these while kicking back in a snow home, or at a base camp on Whitney or Shasta early season. When I’m climbing, there is NO need for these. They are much, much too warm.

In closing, these are extremely warm, and pretty darn awesome. Once again, thank you Mountain Hardware.

The North Face Base Camp Duffel Bag - 2560-4395cu in

Rating for this product: 5 April 20, 2011

This bag is PERFECT! I have it in large, and it fits some serious gear for a big this size. I use it for almost every trip I go on. It's really thick, and water resistant. I love the backpack type straps, so you can use your hands while running through the airport, or unloading you car after or during a trip. It's been to quite a few pretty cool places.

Crazy comfortable!!!!

Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Sleeping Pad - Rectangular

Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Sleeping Pad - Rectangular

Rating for this product: 5 April 14, 2011

This pad is awesome! I’ve used it now for a couple of years. It’s perfect with a Big Agnes sleeping bag, but it also works amazingly with any system. It’s the most comfortable sleeping pad made, and it packs down to almost nothing. The only downfall I think is has is the fact you have to blow it up. If you take it on a long climb in higher elevation, it sucks (or blows) to have to blow the pad up. When you have extremely tired, and just want to lay down, the few extra minutes to blow it up kind of sucks. But trust me, its well worth the comfort. On a side note, I no longer use this pad for mountaineering. I’ve changed to a Thermarest Pro 4 for the added ease of use on long summit pushes.

Arc'teryx Bora 80 Backpack - 4390-5000cu in

Rating for this product: 5 March 29, 2011

If you're a mountaineer, or a person that takes long treks... OR a person that likes to have a ton of gear with you... This is the pack for you. There is a TON of room in this pack. Enough for over a week on the mountain with ropes, gear, ice axes, etc. The pack is not light... but you can’t feel the weight on your back due to the awesome frame design. The hip belt, and shoulder straps are second to none. The brain area of the pack is perfectly sized for all of your "need right now" gear. Also, the full length side zipper is perfect for looking in your pack to snag an extra layer without having to unload your entire pack. All in all... This is a pack for anyone. It will be the last pack you EVER buy.

Mountain Hardwear Lamina 0 Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Synthetic

Rating for this product: 4 March 9, 2011

I'm 6'1" tall, 240lbs. The long fit's okay. It's a little long, but I have enough room to fit some clothes at the bottom of the bag. I've slept in a snow trench without a bivy in the high teens with base layers, socks, and light jacket. Kept me nice and warm. The cut is nice and wide for all you with a wide frame, or for those who want a little room to move around. All in all, a great sleeping bag.

Great price for a down puffy!

Marmot Stockholm Down Jacket - Men's

Marmot Stockholm Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 3, 2011

I got the Vapor Blue jacket in XXL. The blue is very bright, but not over the top. I'm 6'1" tall and weigh 245lbs with a large frame. With my base layer, mid layer, and softshell, this fits the bill perfectly. The hood is HUGE! A little too big for my needs, but it's very workable. With my helmet, and my soft shell hood on, it's still a little large... But again, very doable. The material is thin, but not too thin. I only use this jacket for very cold summit days, or for base camp while snowshoeing in the high Sierra's. I really, really like the fleece internal cuffs. Super soft, and keep the cold air out. The pockets work well for all "normal" needed items. I've however, never used the sleeve pocket. The zipper is plastic, but runs very true, and I've never caught it on the fabric. Overall it's a good buy. The hood is a little big, and it's not a hard-er shell puffy. 4 stars it is. I got this jacket on SAC... Smokin' deal!

Rating for this product: 5 March 2, 2011

I've used this set for 2 seasons now. They work great, clean up well, and fit in the side holder on the Jet Boil system. I've never used the spatula, so I can't say anything good, or bad for that... But the spoon works awesome with the JB cup. The fork works perfect for Ramen. I like the long length of them as well. Even if I didn't have a Jet Boil, I'd still use these. Small, light, and durable. Great buy!

The only reason I'm giving these pants a 4 star rating is the weight. They are super heavy, and with only 1 small chest pocket, you'd think they would be a ton lighter. All in all, a great mountaineering bib. I love the full length leg zips, and the soft shell back. Great job Mountain Hardwear!

Voile Telepro Shovel

Voile Telepro Shovel

Rating for this product: 5 February 9, 2011

I've used this shovel a few times in very different types of snow with the same GREAT result. It's nice and light, and extremely durable. It packs down small enough to carry on your day pack, but has a big enough head to move a good amount of snow. The best two parts of the shovel is the "D" style handle (great for a lot of snow cave/shelter shoveling), and the extendable/retractable shaft. When you need to move a lot of snow for a snow sitting area, make it long... If you need to make a snow cave, in tight areas, shorten it up. It's awesome! Great buy, great price!

Another Amazing Product From MH

Mountain Hardwear Compressor PL Insulated Hooded Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Compressor PL Insulated Hooded Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 21, 2011

At first glance of this jacket, you wonder “how in the heck is that going to keep me warm, and how well is this super light weight jacket going to hold up?” Well, I decided… Why not, I’ll give it a try! I’m a super snob for MH products, and I’m glad I stuck with it. It is by far my “bring everywhere” jacket due to its crazy warmth, pack ability, and weight. It’s small enough to stuff into a hard shell pocket (bulgy, but fits), and the PL is crazy warm. If you’re looking at getting a lightweight warm jacket that you do not need to worry about getting wet, THIS IS IT! Thanks again Mountain Hardware, I appreciate your top notch products at reasonable prices.
