Princeton Tec Pilot LED Light

Princeton Tec Pilot LED Light

Rating for this product: 5 November 24, 2009

Got 5 of these on SAC for $4 each, couldn't beat that price...
I do Search and Rescue, and we spend a lot of time searching in the woods at night. I put one of these on the back of each of my packs, so that people behind me can see me... Works great, especially when in single file (like when carrying a litter). We normally use glow sticks, but these just seem to be much more efficient.

Great Off-Road Shoe

La Sportiva FC 1.1 Hiking Shoe - Men's

La Sportiva FC 1.1 Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 24, 2009

If your definition for a "hiking shoe" is just something comfy and "cool looking" to wear around town, these are not it. They have the stiffness (and support) of a true hiking shoe.
Sizing-wise, i found them a tiny bit small. If I were wearing thick winter socks, then I think they would be too snug. Of course, if I needed thick winter socks I would likely be wearing boots...
Just my $.02

CamelBak Vantage 40 Hydration Pack - 3L

CamelBak Vantage 40 Hydration Pack - 3L

Rating for this product: 5 August 20, 2009

I just got this a few months ago -- I use for for Search and Rescue -- it is my 'rope rescue' 24hr pack (non-alpine). Basically, it holds everything I could possibly need for 24hrs on a search and rescue mission, including my harness, helmet, gloves, goggles and extra team gear. Also, it is easy to attach stuff to the outside (like axes and stuff).
The only thing I wish camelback should address is that it is hard to insert the bladder when your pack is full.

Patagonia All-Wear Cargo Short - Men's

Patagonia All-Wear Cargo Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 August 20, 2009

To start, I bought these a little bit large (a 34 instead of a 32 [I prefer a 33]). They were way big in the waist, so I figured that a belt would clear that up. Nope, the way the beltloops are designed the belt didn't really hold up the shorts all the way around, and there are weird sag areas.

Photo and description inaccurate

Princeton Tec Yukon HL Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 August 20, 2009

OK, I just ordered two of these.
The battery pack has a LONG power cord (5') attaching it to the headlamp, making it great to wear the battery pack on your belt, life jacket strap, wherever.
Having the battery pack on the headlamp straps themselves is a bit awkward as you have to coil up the cable to make it work.
It just happens that I like the feature of the extended cord, but if you don't, then you might try another lamp.

I love my Chili Lite's...
Just so you know, though, they are shorter than the average pair of shorts these days. they come up maybe 3" above my knee and i am an average 6' guy.

But please, I need a new pair, I was cleaning the bathrooms in our house, and I spilled some bleach on them. SAC, can you come to my rescue?!?!

Just OK...

Smith Reactor Max Interchangeable Sunglasses

Smith Reactor Max Interchangeable Sunglasses

Rating for this product: 3 April 22, 2009

Well, I got these to replace some Oakley Zeros that were stolen, to be used as running glasses.
For the most part, the glasses are good, and I will likely continue to use them for running, but...

The lenses seem big enough, but have a tendency to ride too high -- for example, the lenses cover my eyebrows, but do not extend down far enough to keep glare from the ground from coming up... (if I put the arms up 1/2 inch above my ears, the lens is in a good place, i gotta experiment with how to keep them there.
They bounce on my nose. Might sound weird, but they move way too much. Never had that problem with my Oakleys or my Smith Factors. I might just have to get used to that...
Otherwise, they seem to be a great pair of glasses...

Garmin 60 CX GPS Unit

For that, you need a "Spot Beacon" or something similar. http://www.findmespot.com/en/
The Spot beacon has a multitude of features from sending out SOS beacons to just giving your friends an update of your current location...
---note, there are also avalanche beacons, but they work completely different...

Good knife at a great price

NRS Pilot Knife

NRS Pilot Knife

Rating for this product: 4 April 14, 2009

This knife replaced a Gerber River Shorty for me. I keep it on the outside of my PFD (P-vest), which is 99% of the time fine for whitewater kayaking and rescue scenarios.
It is somewhat bulky if trying to climb into a raft from the water (gets caught on line).
Like any knife kept on the outside of a PFD, I do recommend attaching it via a cord so it does not fall to the bottom of the river...

Smith Factor Interchangeable Sunglasses - Polarized

Smith Factor Interchangeable Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 4 March 25, 2009

I got these to replace another pair of Smith sliders that I lost in the river... They are great. the only thing I found disconcerting is that right after I got them, it appeared that a thin film on the arms started to rub off at the end. Other than that, they are perfect! Oh, I am really tough on my gear, and have nicked my polarized lenses a few times already, so maybe they could be a bit tougher (or I could be more careful).

Good knife for the price

Gerber River Shorty Blunt-Tip Knife

Gerber River Shorty Blunt-Tip Knife

Rating for this product: 5 March 24, 2009

I got one (although I want to upgrade to the pricier CRKT ABC ER Knife). I have used it on my PFD on approx 500 river trips (whitewater kayaking). It has never fallen out, although I have friends who have lost theirs. If you are worried about that -- any knife can fall out of a sheath. Just attach a cord to it.
It is a great peace of mind -- you would never want to be handling a rope near the water if you didn't have a trustworthy knife at hand to get you out of a predicament.

Oakley Riddle Sunglasses

Oakley Riddle Sunglasses

Rating for this product: 5 March 23, 2009

I have more sunglasses than I know what to do with, but when I am feeling a bit of an attitude, I pull out my White Riddles. Took me a little while to like these (they are big and bold) but now they are my favorite glasses for just chillin'. I would not use them in any type of strenuous physical activity.
Oh, and I am a guy with a decent sized face - they are snug but not uncomfortable.

Columbia Omni-Dry Silver Ridge Convertible Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 2, 2009

These are great pants. I wear them 4 seasons, but i do wear layers under them when it is cold out.
The belt doesn't stay very tight, so I always find myself tugging it tighter, but it really isn't a problem if you don't put anything on it (radio, phone, etc).

Triton not very good at all...

Magellan Triton 1500 GPS

Magellan Triton 1500 GPS

Rating for this product: 1 January 13, 2009

I bought a couple Tritons late last year. One worked, one didn't. Magellan asked for people to return defective units directly to Magellan, not place of purchase. So I did. Did I mention that they made me pay the $15 to FedEx it, too?
They sent it back to me -- it still didn't work... Customer Service has been very unresponsive (Tech Support, in India, actually does an OK job, but they are limited).
Supposedly, they shipped me a new unit a week and a half ago. I still haven't seen it...
This is the last time I buy Magellan products.
On a positive note, the TOPO! integration works pretty well once you figure it out, and the screen is really nice (I was upgrading from an old-school Magellan 315).
The menu system is weird, but maybe I will get used to it eventually.
All in all, this was a product that shouldn't have made it out of QA, and I think their Customer Service just couldn't keep up so they abandoned even trying...
