Awesome Tent!

NEMO Equipment Inc. Obi Tent 2-Person 3-Season

NEMO Equipment Inc. Obi Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 May 2, 2012

Love the design of the tent! Very breathable, and super comfortable. The tent itself is a little small for 2 people for me, as I'm 6'5", but it's not terrible. Love the vestibules, very roomy and able to stuff a lot of gear under them! Tent tensions very nicely, and pitches TIGHT. Nemo makes awesome tents, and their attention to detail is impeccable. The stuff sacks they come with are awesome, and allow you to just simply stuff the tent and go. It functions as a drybag, so you'll have a dry tent, either way!

Black Diamond Quickdraw Carbon Fiber Probe 240

Black Diamond Quickdraw Carbon Fiber Probe 240

Rating for this product: 5 March 17, 2012

Very light, and a decent length for here in the East. Kept this on my pack for Mt. Washington, and haven't had to use it yet, but for practicing, its awesome. Very easy to deploy, and the bag it comes in is great to make the probe very accessible.

Awesome Snowshoes

MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoe - Men's

MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 17, 2012

Used these for mountaineering in the White Mountains. Floatation of these are awesome. They bite into hard snow, giving your sure footedness even when it does get steep. I used these on the way up Avalon, and the trail gets quite steep there, and just throw the heel lifter up, and you can cruise up no problem. I'm 170 lbs, and about 200 with a pack, and the 25" are great, gives floatation, and still small enough to be very maneuverable.

Black Diamond Soloist Glove

Black Diamond Soloist Glove

Rating for this product: 5 February 27, 2012

Really awesome gloves, build quality of them is awesome, everything is well made! Liners of these are velcro'd in, and come out super easily to dry out! I can't wait to really use them and I will be using these on Mt. Washington to test them pretty thoroughly. UPDATE: I didn't even have to use them on Washington, but I did use them on Lafayette. Sleet and snow made for cold temperatures, and these kept my hands warm, no problem! My hands weren't even wet.

Mountain Hardwear Cima Alta Backpack - 1525cu in

January 15, 2012

CAMP USA C12/C10 Steel Linking Bars - 17.5cm

January 15, 2012

Personally, I wouldn't recommend using anything other than from Grivel, especially with crampons. Fit is important, but if you can't find the long bars, I'd consider sending them back and finding something that you would be able to get the long bars for. That's what I would do if I was in your situation. Hope this helps!

Rating for this product: 5 January 15, 2012

This harness is super light, and packs down ridiculously small. It's comfortable over a bunch of winter layers, and has enough room to keep necessities at hand. The thing I like best, taking it on and off is super easy, and doesn't require any messing about, just put it on and go.

Fantastic Boots!

La Sportiva Batura Evo Mountaineering Boot - Men's

La Sportiva Batura Evo Mountaineering Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 9, 2012

These are awesome boots. Super warm, and light. I recently did 10 miles in the catskills to break them in, had no hot spots, and was very comfortable. It was about 18 degrees, and they kept my feet plenty warm. Fit with crampons were excellent, sizing is certainly a little odd, they fit perfectly for me as a size 46. I wear a 45.5 in La Sportiva trail runners. The integrated gaiter is very effective, and helps to keep your feet a bit warmer too. They do take a long time to dry out though.

Great Kit!

Adventure Medical Ultralight & Watertight .9 First Aid Kit

Adventure Medical Ultralight & Watertight .9 First Aid Kit

Rating for this product: 4 December 29, 2011

This is an awesome kit as a starter for a super lightweight, ready for anything kit. It has pretty much many of the basics that a decent first aid kit should have. In addition, I'm going to add at least 1 SAM splint, and a 35g packet of Celox to round out the kit. A good first aid kit is a vital aspect, and you should basically be prepared for anything when in the backcountry. The kit is actually a little lighter than is shown here, it weighs in at 8.4 ounces.

Perfect Pant

Mountain Hardwear Tanglewood Softshell Pant - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Tanglewood Softshell Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 25, 2011

These pants are awesome, super light, and reasonably warm. I don't like a lot of extra stuff with my pants, and these fit the bill perfectly, 2 hand pockets, and that's it. The material is also a bit stretchy, so these will be absolutely great for climbing in the winter. I'm 6'5 (32x36) measurements, and the large fits me perfectly with a baselayer. These pants tend to run a little bit small otherwise, I was recommended a medium, and got that at first, and there was no way I could get them on with my baselayer underneath, returned them, and got the large, and life is good! Only beef with the pant is, there are zippers on the bottom of the pants to be able to take them off over boots, but even with them open, I can't get the legs over my boots, they're just too small.

Awesome Crampon!

Black Diamond Sabretooth Pro Crampon

Black Diamond Sabretooth Pro Crampon

Rating for this product: 5 November 2, 2011

Can't wait to use these crampons! Quality of these is awesome! These fit excellent with my Batura EVO's, but required the movement of the front and rear bars. The front bars however, are hard to get out, but once that's done, you never need to fool around with them again! I used these recently in the Catskills in NY. These perform far better than I expected. The way these handle ice and rock is fantastic. I walked about 10 miles with these on, traction is fantastic on ice, these things bite super well. Fit is excellent, remained tight and no adjustments were required at all after I put them on. Very quick and convenient to take on and off.

Mountain Hardwear Dragon Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 1, 2011

Super comfortable, and breathable. The hood fits perfectly over a climbing helmet; but if you don't have one the hood is absolutely huge. The material can be a bit itchy if you have a T shirt on underneath. It is still pretty waterproof, but I still prefer a hardshell for wet conditions. Build quality of this jacket is superb, and also has really nice big pit zips for dumping heat.

Great Idea!

Black Diamond GridLock Screwgate Carabiner

Black Diamond GridLock Screwgate Carabiner

Rating for this product: 5 July 14, 2011

Works absolutely great with my ATC guide. Keeps everything where it should be, with no crossloading or any other shennanigans you encounter with a regular biner. Takes a bit of getting used to getting it on and off the belay loop, but works super well. I actually notice that when my climbing partner is hanging and the full weight is on my harness, it pulls evenly on the leg loops, so it doesn't get too uncomfortable! It also helps to keep my ATC feeding rope nice and smooth.

Five Ten D'Aescent Approach Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 29, 2011

These are an awesome shoe. Great for sketchy descents, and for short approaches to climbing areas. They're not very supportive, so you may get a bit sore from a long slog with a heavy load. I used these shoes daily working on a ropes course, and they climb super well, and were awesome to use every day. The durability I found is a little so so. The rubber wears like iron, but the thing is though, the mesh doesn't. I destroyed these in about a year of heavy duty abuse. I absolutely love the shoe, and am willing to put up with replacing them yearly just because they work so well for what I do.

June 20, 2011

As with any sleeping bag, try to keep in in the largest storage bag possible when you're not using it. Keeping the bag compressed destroys the loft and can ruin a bag in as little as a season.

La Sportiva Cobra Vibram XS Grip2 Climbing Shoe

June 20, 2011

As with most Sportiva stuff, the quality is awesome. Rubber is good and sticky, and the sizing is really consistent. I have no trouble getting any of my Sportivas to fit me, and I have a weird foot.

I got sunshine... On my head!

Petzl MYO XP Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 June 18, 2011

Hands down, an awesome headlamp. This thing is BRIGHT. Makes sketchy night descents a mere schlep in the woods. Water resistant, 3 settings for brightness, and a lockout to help prevent it accidentally being turned on. Another cool feature, there is the battery charge indicator, but when it does change to another color, the light blinks for half charge, and again when it gets really low to warn you to change the batteries out. The strap is great, and super comfortable, and prevents the lamp from bouncing around. works absolutely great on a climbing helmet too. The boost mode is pretty cool too, and works well!

Stoked about... socks?

Darn Tough Merino Wool No-Show Mesh Running Sock - Men's

Darn Tough Merino Wool No-Show Mesh Running Sock - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 16, 2011

Who knew socks could make your day awesome? With these, your feet will be super comfortable, and DRY. I have super gnarly sweaty feet from running, and these breathe like a dream, and best of all, wool is naturally anti-bacterial, so they stay smelling fresher longer.

Super comfortable, very supportive, and completely waterproof! You can't go wrong with these. Can't wait to hit some trails with these, but for every day use they're awesome. Super breathable too, so your feet don't get all gnarly from foot sweat.

Love since first try

La Sportiva Miura Vibram XS Edge Climbing Shoe - Men's

La Sportiva Miura Vibram XS Edge Climbing Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 16, 2011

I absolutely love these shoes. Got these to replace a beat pair of Pontas (Evolv) and haven't looked back. The fit is super accurate, and surprisingly comfortable considering I'm wearing a 42.5 and my normal shoes are a 45.5. They work great for steep climbing, and smear super well also. The lacing lets you dial them in just right.

Toasty Warm Noggin

Mountain Hardwear Transition Dome

Mountain Hardwear Transition Dome

Rating for this product: 5 June 14, 2011

Keeps my head nice and warm. Amazing for how thin it is, which is awesome because it fits under my climbing helmet for winter climbing. Windstopper works great for keeping you warm, and dry also because it sheds snow pretty well. The fleece keeps your ears toasty, and is good and soft too so no chafing against the ears. The large size fits my pretty good size head well, and isn't too tight.

Awesome Shell

Mountain Hardwear Epic Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Epic Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 14, 2011

This is by far a killer deal for a great shell. For 100 bucks, it sheds water like nobodies' business. It's super durable, and has held up really well to my abuse. Only problem is some of the inner laminate is peeling off a little bit, but doesn't affect the performance of the jacket. It's also pretty breathable, and works great over an insulating layer. Nice big pit zips too work great for dumping extra heat.

Five Ten Coyote Lace-Up Climbing Shoe

June 14, 2011

Usually, with leather they tend to stretch about a size. This is slightly different depending on the shoe, but it tends to be around a size.

Mountain Hardwear WindStopper Tech Jacket - Men's

June 13, 2011

Absolutely! It's an awesome jacket to use under a shell. You can size up slightly if you need to, but most times these coupled with an outer shell should be pretty warm, for some people, as long as they're coupled with a good synthetic baselayer.

Marmot Kompressor Backpack - 920cu in

June 13, 2011

this is a pretty small pack, but you should be able to fit a 2L system in there. A 3L is going to be a squeeze I think.

Check out the thermal kit for either the platypus bladder system, or Camelbak also makes a winter kit for their unbottle system if I remember correctly.

No, this pack doesn't come with a bladder. You'll have to buy it separately. Check out Platypus or Camelbak, they both have excellent bladders.

Sweet Pants!

prAna Stretch Zion Pant - Men's

prAna Stretch Zion Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 11, 2011

I live in these pants. Super comfortable, really durable, and really stretchy so they don't bind you up when you're climbing. I have the slightly older version, and they still look brand new even after being put through the wringer by me! Only beef I have with them is the belt that Prana has with it occasionally tends to slip, so I have to tweak it occasionally.

Birkenstock Arizona Soft Footbed Suede Sandal - Men's

Birkenstock Arizona Soft Footbed Suede Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 7, 2011

I'm very flatfooted, and these shoes are awesome. Tons of support, and I'm super comfortable in them. Love that they are repairable, and they are holding up super well. They wear like iron! I normally prefer to go barefoot, and these are just as good as being barefoot, if not better because of the support!

Sanuk Donny Shoe - Men's

June 7, 2011

I've been caught in the rain in mine a few times, They're completely fine in the rain. Sometimes the shoe can get a bit slippy inside, and occasionally on muddy surfaces I found can be a bit slippery too after the shoes are worn in.

Love my minichamp. I carry it every day when I'm not carrying my Huntsman. Super useful, and has a lot of great features to help you through the day. Victorinox spends a lot of time in making their knives, and it truly shows. the craftsmanship is impeccable.

MSR Packtowl Personal Towels

MSR Packtowl Personal Towels

Rating for this product: 5 June 6, 2011

It's always important to carry a towel (If you don't believe me check the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy!) With this baby, you've got all your bases covered, super soft, super absorbent, and very compact! The pouch is fantastic for keeping the towel from getting frayed from being in your pack. The large size is great for most people, because you can use it around camp, or for yourself.
